You just broke one of the most important gun safety rules.
NEVER point a gun at something you are not willing to destroy. (little buddy) (Thirsty Grandma)
    Also,
NEVER EVER EVER use a weapon mounted light for a search light!!!!!
A hand held light is for searching.
A weapon mounted light is for illuminating your target/threat after you have established what that is, (with your hand held light).
Yes, I know it's easier to use the weapon mounted light for a search light and if you know 100% that you have a threat and what that threat is then by all means use your weapon mounted light. But you better be damn sure of yourself!!
    Assaulting by pointing a firearm
The offense is a Class A1 misdemeanor. The reckless gun owner can also face an additional charge of communicating a threat if they willfully threaten to injure another person by pointing a firearm at them. This offense is a Class 1 misdemeanor.
That's what you did to (little buddy) (Thirsty Grandma)
It's important to note here that the other person does NOT have to sustain an actual injury to be charged with assault with a firearm. In fact, just pointing a loaded firearm at another person could be sufficient cause to support charges.

Thanks for your legal opinion. I'm sure that's all true. So, you think it's probably grandma and you're confirming this with your hand held light but no, it's a serial killer with gun in hand ready to fire. You are standing there, light in one hand, gun in the other. You will need probably a full 3 seconds to make an effective shot. The perp needs one second or less. Now how do you survive? You might end up dead, but at least it's legal.

I understand what you are saying, I used to think the same way. But, that doesn't eliminate the laws as a society we have to live by. If you don't like a law, then have it changed.
In the 56 years I've been on this earth, I've lived in Minneapolis St Paul, out in the country, moved to another state, doing armed security, some Law enforcement work. I can say I have never had anyone at my property that would be considered enough of a threat to use a gun.
Which means, If I (or anyone) takes your advice I/they are more likely to point a gun at a non threatening person then a real threat. Bye Bye gun rights.
The object of self defence is to,
      1) save your life or the life of another.
      2) and keep your freedom.
Well, you do what you think is right.
But think of it like this,
If you point your gun at an innocent person just (one time). You could end up losing your right to own a gun.
Then when a real threat don't come to your door. What are you going to use to defend yourself and family with???
Go back to my first reply and watch that video link I added. He expanse this very well.
If you're going to use a weapon mounted light. you better know the do's and don'ts.
      Hope this helps

I get your point but if it’s on my property, nighttime, early A.M. etc I’m damn sure not carrying an extra flashlight to identify. There’s something called Social boundaries and if that person doesn’t notify me they’re coming over after midnight or late at night they’ll be starring at my CZ-SP01 or DDM4 V7 Pro or any of my other weapons. I’ll just deal with the law or consequences. Any reasonable person that’s in “fear of their life “ is grabbing the gun. Not trying to be a hard ass but that’s just how I handle things. Right or wrong, it’s just the way I’m wired. I don’t believe a “Friend “ will press charges if that happens. They’ll probably call next time but not go ballistic. 95% chance the person isn’t there to visit.

Holster availability is the reason why I tend to go for a surefire or streamlight for a pistol. Some small company could make the best light out there, but if I can't put it on my gun and put that gun in a holster then there's no point, especially for a gun like the P320 which absolutely needs its trigger covered when not in use

That's a great question. Yes, if he is lying in wait and you are leaving the light on as you carelessly investigate the "bump in the night". That's why training, and easy to access, intuitive switches on a tactical light are important. If you notice in the opening scene I am using cover and doing a flash check around each corner while using cover, then turning the light off while I evaluate what I see before proceeding to the next point of cover.

If You have an old one , type of " 1st gen 'surefire'" , and You don't need it in future, I am pretty ready to take it for an affordable price, if You're interested of course, and first of all not offended 😊 ;-)
And second opinion, I still do not catch the meaning to carry the light, right next to the main hand arm .....it's make ya , a perfect target in the night......Our Resistance in WW2 , has an amazing experience- to carry the "Pertrix" or " Daimon" military light on a stick with dimensions 25- 35 cm( 10,15 inches) , so in close proximity the enemy shoots right away from Ya , and Your main weapon( Sten, MP38/40 , Beretta or CZ383)...
