Agreed, but buying sight unseen for a handmade item has its inherent disqualifications to consider.
If I want something perfect I do it myself. Leather, gun machining etc. Yeah I'm going to have to learn everything about it and it's going to take forever but that's just me
Being a custom Rifle Builder I'm sad to see someone botched the holster for you. My saying is "It's you're Rifle you should get what YOU Want it's not for me" if it ain't what you wanted I'll fix it and make it what you wanted unless it's a safety issue. Money is tough to get and in the computer age you don't want to be flamed and there are pleanty of people who will do it without ever giving the maker a change to right the wrong. I'm adamant about making sure the customer is happy with their purchase and warranty my work. As you said we all make mistakes it's how you fix them is what counts. I'd have sent it back and gave him a chance to rebuild the rig. I was an FAA aviation parts inspector for many years. When I would reject a part and the machinist would be PO'ed and ask why, i'd say "when all else fails, make it to the print". I just finished a .338 Lapua yesterday for a customer I inst. his scope and we went to the range and with some ammo from his old rifle it shot 1/3 rd MOA at 300 yards with no load developement. I asked him if he was happy and he said he was ecstatic, I'll see him today when he pays me for my labor. I charge for parts upfront and labor upon delivery and i'll make sure again he is happy because I have a .284 Win. F-Class rig I am starting for him Tuesday I love repeat customers.

I have never ordered a belt that fit right. If I want it to fit right I have had to try it on first. Since I built my gun and learned the triple shot I'm going to make my own fast draw rig. I appreciate all the knowledge you have shared. Thank you very much buddy
FYI Tandy has/had great full sized patterns in many different styles and by various makers. They make great starting points. Also old AL Stohlman books are really helpful for leather info, stitching, dyeing and tooling.
I always knew there was differences between holsters. But I never knew it was that much. Once you explained it made sense. Thank you, I love the information you share in your videos. keep up the good work.

Man. This is what I wanted to see someone who has experience on how leather holsters work and where to order. Hopefully old trading post gets you like a sponsor ship. Even if its just for ordering a bandolier from them and using your code. This type of gun has its fans and would love to see more on holsters and reviews of people who make them and how you feel about them.
It would great to know more (and see in action) about unusual types of carry styles. Like angel eyes, indio, old west shoulder holster, etc. Their pros & cons. That would be a good idea for a video.

Hate it when bad work gets handed off. I still have the cowboy action rig that was made by a club member I shot with. Fit right the first time only had to mold the holsters to my specific guns which he walked me right thru doing it. Wish more places had pride in their work like he did.
Pale Rider, great movie. When I saw the cross on the holster I kind of figured. I wonder though, would any of those holsters actually keep you iron in place on horse back? Maybe if you're into it, another video depicting actual rigs used in the old west. If not, I still enjoy your content, ran across a short of you doing the triple shot and loved it, I also of course admire Bob Munden, and after seeing some of your stuff and seeing you talk about Bob, I must say I enjoy watching you shoot that much more. One day, I'll get my retirement ranch and practice some "Six gun magic".

Mike at Old Trading post helped me out a lot also with holsters and my cartridge belt. I also like Do. Hume Leather. Only problem is both are handmade it's the wait.
I've done some custom leather work mostly knife sheaths. If you want to take off small amounts of leather I would recommend a dermail tool with a appropriate sized sanding drum and remove and shave and polish and shape the groove below the hammer until it suits you. You can also use it to smooth and polish the inside of the holster for a glossy leather finish for zero drag on the draw. Hope this is helpful.

I've been collecting cowboy belt rigs since 1990 my first one was made in Tombstone Arizona for me. My honest opinion is I started ordering them off Amazon and they're actually really nice and for the price if I have to customize it a little it's definitely okay😊

I knew Gordon personally and if were truly his rig (not the person who owns the name/shop now) it would have been done very professional and absolutely correct. Gordon Davis was a true Craftsman. I still own several of his rigs. I hope you the best to find a good maker that can make what you want and how you want. Enjoyed your video/s.

Bought a Beretta Stampede, nickel plated .357 5.5" barrel. Don Hume Leather goods made me a holster that was so fresh and oily I let it air cure a couple weeks before use. They don't come any fresher.
Most leather I've bought has been stored awhile, and if it's not wrapped in plastic, they get a little stiff.
That pistol seems to be tuned for full-house 158 grainers.😊
I never knew a old-stlye cowboy would tell me about gun leathers while i lie awake at 1am in my bed.

For my 45th birthdaymy wife got me a rig from Kirkpatricks. I called them and ordered what i wanted, it's a Hollywoodstyle fast draw rig based on Clint Eastwoods from his early movies, A Fistfull of Dollasr, etc'. I'm like you, it has to look right and function pretty or im not going to be happy. Kirkpatricks did a beautiful job. They might be worth checking out.

Very cool video - I was only vaguely aware of the differences between fast draw and cowboy action - and the different styles of holsters that would be appropriate to each. I's now more highly edjumakated. Interesting to me is how things have continued to evolve after what we think of as the "wild west" was long over. I can't help it - still interests me. I watched too many cowboy movies as a kid .......I guess. That's my excuse anyway.

When I was a boy I had a toy revolver, I had a holster made for this weapon but it was difficult because here in Brazil we don't have that culture but it was reasonable, but when I participated in the IPSC, here I bought a safariland holster to compete ok.Sorry By the English translator "Google" I like your videos congratulations.👍👍

A lot of people didn't know that he had a special holster that had a bullet deflecter steal plate on the bottom of it,that holster saved him from blowing off his leg.
I have three fast draw rigs and all are perfect. My first is more than twenty years old, recommended by Bob Munden. They were built by Alfonsos.
Is Alfonsos still in buisness? I've heard of them.
Hey TUCO, the most beautiful holster rig for me as a kid was the Paladin (Have Gun Will Travel) style worn by him on that TV series. I realize it was Hollywood, but there was just something riveting, about him drawing that 7.5 inch all black Colt SAA with the black grips, aiming it at the camers, giving his warning with authority, and then reholstering with that "don't mess with me" sound of the SAA being shoved down into the holster.. Perhaps that is was what inspired the famous Dirty Harry lines while aiming his 44 Mag at the "punks." Just a thought. Stay safe. Doug.
I agree that's a cool rig and SAA. It would be hard as hell to draw fast, some guys could do it though.
@@TUCOtheratt Thanks for your input to my questions. I greatly appreciate it. Here is some trivia. In the opening shoot out of Gunsmoke, James Arness was actually beaten on the draw, and the man who beat him was a famous quick draw holster designer and the fastest quick draw artist at that time. I can't remember his name. Also Arness enjoyed practicing the SAA and was the fastest on the draw of all the old tv cowboys.
@@dougboal7620 His name was Arvo Ojala. He was quite a man with an SAA. You are referring to the time they shot the opening duel for gunsmoke letting Ojala run full speed with Arness even though Ojala was the guy to fall in every opening for Gun Smoke. There are some cool video clip of Ojala on YT.

I’ve been watching Laramie and Robert Fuller who plays Jess Harper has a surprisingly fast draw. I doubt anyone has really looked at his draw since Laramie seems to be a less popular show
Try mernickle holsters. I love mine. Its a black steel lined fast draw. Beautiful and fit perfect.
Western shooting rigs are absolutely beautiful.
It's one reason I invested a good amount of money and a few years learning to work leather. I do have a few rigs that Mernickel made me but I make my own gear now.
My best fit is the ones I've made but I like the look of the professional rigs.
@@TUCOtheratt Yeah nothing beats a rig that has all the attention to detail. I'm still learning but when I take my time I can make rigs that rival the high end stuff, Problem is if I get in a hurry I have to make two. cause I screwed up the first one lol.
As a leatherworker myself a custom rigging means you are fitted a couple times so it is actually custom. The waist shoild have been fitted before the belt was attatched so it would be centered. Then the waist rig should have been measured for the holster while you were wearing the waist rig. I havent made but 2 complete set ups but to both were different and both required individual fitting. You carry your hand different than the next guy. You want your pistol at a certain angle you like to draw from. Other folks want forward angle or lower hang. Your arm is a certain length and different than the next guy. I wouldnt consider trying to make a fitted fast draw without the body being avail for fittings i take and we agree on.

Agreed! Holsters are one thing but full rigs are another. The only way to do it is in person with several fittings. But that's also why I don't do much anymore. When I was younger and had enough passion to overcome ocd clients, I could deal with it. Not so much these days.🤠

I would lost my mind over that holster.
i would love to have a high end single drop rig, but they're just too damned rich for my blood lol. I bought my single drop lined and tooled rig for $80.00 off of Amazon but having said that i would love to have a John Wayne style buscadero but the ones i have looked at have been over 300 dollars tbh i would have almost as much in the holster than my SAA. Thanks for the excellent reviews, your honesty is refreshing and i don't know which is slicker your clothes or your draw. I have one tip for you since you share so many. As you pointed out your black holster is showing some wear from all your practicing. To help hide the practice, keep you looking as slick as a rattle snake and help protect and prolong the life of your holster, use black shoe polish on the scratches. You can buff it to shine or leave dull just make sure to rub it in and wipe off the xsess. If you reply I'll tell you my secret for brown leather scratches and its not brown shoe polish thats hard to match. ROONEY maybe dead but not forgotten, cant wait till I see you again. ✌️😉👆
That sounds like great idea to hide the scratches.
You can fill in the scratches with black polish by working it into the scratch in layers, use a hairdryer to dry each layer. The Marines do it on there dress shoes and boots.
Unless you can find brown polish that matches each shade brown leather, I use my sweat in layers like the black polish each layer making it darker. The oils in sweat is lighter in color then polish and thinner then bees wax. It won't fill the scratch like black. Try em on a old belt. Every time you touch leather you work the sweat in on your hands.
If you haven't been in a western movie or series you should. You have what competition shooters don't. Hollywood style.🤠👍
Great video. Yeah whenever I make a belt, I take the length dimension, and I make two tighter loops and three looser loops. That leathercrafter obviously lacked effort. Especially when you pay for a custom order

I love your contents of your program on here they're very educational and I get a very big enjoyment out of it especially the way you can handle your revolvers and I am doing the same thing as well with the old rig that I picked up from an antique store it is still not working condition but I want something just a little better but it does work but I want something where I can enjoy carrying I can enjoy carrying it as well but I like to go out in Target practice and I kind of carry it around letting people know that I know what the hell I'm doing and they sure hell don't it's kind of like I'm Texas red with a touch of John Wayne in a little bit of Jim Bowie all mixed in together and a touch of wild Bill Hickock
I saw dozens and dozens of the old west photos ,even for those famous or very famous persons in that time , I don't remember that I saw any one of them wearing the holster that I saw on you or other fast drawing persons like you . Those people in those photos either they hold their revolvers in their hands , or inserted in their hips, or some very ( primitive) and simple leathers like a bag attached to their wrists 👀. Nice video by the way 🎉.
I've found that having the buckle and billet ends reversed helps keep the distance between the buckle and holster always the right distance

I have been in the same boat as well when ordering a custom rig , as soon as you take it out of the box and pull it out of the bag you know it’s not the right size and it is definitely Not what I ordered after talking with them prior to ordering for an hour and sending emails about size fit and color. That depends on you definition of Best Gun leather and the purpose for it. Firearms are used in many facets of life and one type of leather will not be good for all. I realize not all makers work at the same level of quality and many prices reflect the variations in quality depending on intended use. Something requiring constant daily use will require a level of quality far above everything else to maintain it's usefulness over a long period of time. I have always made my own gun leather going back to 1956 and my first belt and holster. First of all I'm left handed and makers don't go out of their way for lefties. Usually it will cost a bit more for a leftie holster than the same one in right handed configuration. Besides I make mine to my own standards and the use intended for it. In other words I know what I want and don't have to translate that for another maker. There's no excuse for lousy stitching or measurement errors. I hand stitch mine so there's no danger of a machine getting out of adjustment and causing the kind of stitching you mentioned.

Awesome holster you’re wearing…I wouldn’t change a thing…I fear ordering custom made stuff on the phone or internet…I restore antique swords 🗡️ (I’m not a professional) but Ive ordered “custom or authentic reproductions” parts that turned out very generic…the “one part fits all” scenario…so frustrating… I’m a fan of the George Lawrence and HH Heiser holsters…best quality leather imo…easy to modify…great video…⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Ya one or two or three mistakes but not every measurement plus bad stitching and bad holster design. Life is too short. He obviously didn't put enough pride into his work.

This is why i make my own stuff so i only have myself to blame if something is wrong
I don' want to say anything negative, I do want to be constructive. When a guy needs a best fit suit, he has to go visit a tailor. Yea sure, a suit is more complicated, but that thought doesn't make a fast draw gun rig a Simple Simon. If you need a rig to be exact, then not just any rig will suffice. If a rig is what makes (0.7) or breaks (1.2) the draw, then ya can't just order dimension it over the phone. Something that special, needs to be in person. Until then, you're just Fast Enough...
BTW, Checkout Frontier Gun Leather. That's where I got my rig and I'm happy.

@@buddyyantz2446 Honestly, I probably couldn't hit a pheasant in flight (too far away) with a pistol but I did hit hand thrown clay birds with a 1911 about 15 years ago when shooting out in WY red desert. It was in a very, very remote area and it didn't matter where the bullets came down. It would be irresponsible to try that just about anywhere else.

Placed an order in late September. Mike told me my holster should be out by the end of December... Now I've been told it should be out by the end of January because of staffing shortages.... I mean I hope. If not, imma have to cancel.
I feel your pain. Mike is a good guy but the leather work in subcontracted. Mine did fit well when I got it.
I committed about Kirkpatrick holsters. I was mistaken, the holster i ordered was from Mernickle Holsters. I'm extremely sorry for the mix up, it was almost 10 years ago now that i got it, but its top notch.
A lot of the stuff from Old Trading Post are from other businesses. Like El Paso Saddlery, Marston Gunleather and so many other. In fact, the rig you're wearing looks similar to one made by Marston

The comment about knowing they would be incapable of producing a correct holster hit home. I have 2 kydex holsters made for a Smith and Wesson model 10 4 inch. The first one is 1/4 inch short and the remake after emails with pictures came in at 1/2 inch of barrel sticking out and the cylinder sitting 1/2 inch deeper in the holster. I quit trying to get them to make a correct sized holster. They were incapable and my time is worth more than it was worth dealing with them.
I have several Mernickel holsters. Nothing like you need but they’re nice. Hope that isn’t from them.
Very interesting review. Very good points of 'the good, the bad, and the ugly' of holsters. Those you and your daughter made are very nice. For those of us that work in leather, are there patterns available for the basics of belt and holster? Like ya know, leather is a fascinating thing to work with, but can be a huge pain in the ass too. You almost have to be in the shop for a week or so while they're cutting it to size. Anyway, have you found decent leather patterns to give us a good starting point?

Agreed. Tandy has full sized patterns for many different guns, layouts and by different makers. Also highly recommended are Al Stohlman's books.
For buckles and hardware, Ohio Travel Bag which I believe was just acquired by Weaver Leather.
Also, imo RJF leather has the finest veg tanned leather at the best prices.
So,.. do you actually do any Cowboy Action Matches?? If so, what State, What City?? I know you're a Serious competitor in other gun sports as well. Keep it upTuco !!

I will also add, I guarantee you have a local leather smith. You should definitely look into having them do some work for you. They are usually VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE because leather work is their business

Dang, that’s a lot of mistakes for a super custom, blank-check (I’m guessing $400?) rig. Didn’t they think to try it on to make sure the gun sat at the 3 o’clock position? Anyway, the one you’re wearing looks to be of very fine quality.
$650. To be fare it was done by phone call, and I video taped my measurements so the buckle to holster position is inexcusable imo.

What's the best way you've found to add the buckled leather thigh strap to your rigs? I'm really wanting to upgrade my tie strap. I love the look, but it comes undone or loosens so fast I look like Gabby Hayes 🤣
You've learned that a western movie tie down string doesn't work at all. I have made my own using 1 inch leather fished through the back side of the holster. Might require cutting into the holster or flap.
