Knuckles in the OG lore was essentially innocent and pure in regards to his interactions with the bad guys due to his lack of social interaction. This led him to be more easily tricked. But in my opinion, that kinda explains why he always seems so angry. He's most likely frustrated with his own naivety.
You missed an important point. The reason he is an "echidna" but looks nothing like an echidna. It is because hedgehog in Japanese is "spiky mouse" (hari nezumi) and echidna is "spiky mole" (hari mogura), so Sonic being a hedgehog, they just chose to make the new character another spiky rodent. And his design is primarily based on being a mole rather than being based on an echidna.

and Fang were cool ideas got thrown out in favor of Sonic having a direct clone in the form of Shadow and then anything that could be a submissive hanger-on to Shadow.
That...actually makes a lot more sense given he likes to burrow. I mean,Echidnas make burrows but not to the same extent.
I feel like even though characters are named "the hedgehog" or "the echidna" other animal traits were incorporated into their designs, which is why sonic kinda looks cat like or why fang and bean are a jerboa and woodpecker respectively but they have wolf and duck traits too, or why charmy has a rodent nose despite being a bee
Yeah except he looks nothing like a mole either. You could say the digging and claws are roughly mole like but almost every rodent digs.
I'm Russian. That was hard to read foreign names in my childhood back in the 90s so I read Knuckles' name as "Knooklez" lol.
Btw I was thinking Knuckles was a red dinosaur.

Mayan temples etc.)
Here's the _concrete answer._ The Chaos Emeralds are given to Sonic and Tails when they complete the challenges from the "Special Zones." These Zones are pocket-dimensions meant to test if a person is worthy to possess the Chaos Emerald, so they are presented with one upon completion as a reward.
The _rest of the time_ that the Chaos Emeralds are _not_ in use, they exist in the Shrine on Angel Island, waiting for the next worthy successor to summon them, and return there once the wielder is done with them.
Knuckles apparently _never got this memo,_ and must've been napping through the events of the first and second Sonic Games if he never noticed that they went missing until then.

Hearing Aquatic Mine open the video with that iconic shot of Knuckles from Adventure ~ I tell ya; it's the simple things in life.
One thing that became all the more clear to me while watching this very detailed & comprehensive review of Knuckles' history is that his recurring intro narrative makes things really difficult for him when it comes to fan-treatment.
Getting tricked and losing the emerald(s). Since it's happened so often from version to version and all the way up to this sparkling new Idris Elba movie rendition, there will always be people who only view Knuckles as "the gullible guy who screws up". Even when he subverts that trend and exhibits character growth, Sega is always reverting him back to the original mistake. They don't let Knuckles grow permanently like Shadow, Silver, or Blaze have been able to. Despite being such a great character, Knuckles has this enormous unfair stigma holding him back. I really hope things change for the better one day. Knuckles shows up and he's there to fight on Sonic's side without ever having to get manipulated first.
I agree with you 100% There’s so much more to Knuckles to explore. Here’s hoping the movie doesn’t cash in too heavily on that one blunder of getting tricked. While that may totally be Knuckles reason to join Eggman, I would love some bad blood between Sonic and his tribe to be the cause that they work through during the coarse of the movie. I definitely want a part 2 to this more about the movie lore and the clan! The clan seems to be the same one from SA1, and Tyson Hesse even revealed on twitter that the echidna who shot Longclaw with an arrow is actually Pachacamac. Therefore I think he’ll have some influence on the events of the second movie now that Knuckles is showing up on Earth confronting Sonic and if they’re still after his power (why they would still be doing so when Knuckles already has a very similar power is beyond me).
Pachacamac’s presence also may hint at the existence of Tikal in the movie continuity. In fact, the temple surrounded by waterfalls in the trailer resembles a real life temple in Guatemala in a Mayan city that shares her name.
I have a few videos on my channel that relate to the echidna clan where I go into more detail. I would totally love to see Tikal in the movie sequel(s), Pachacamac as a more active villain, and more relevance of them in the videos games and other media, because the echidna clan has so many more stories it could tell. I would like a Knuckles spin-off game that expands on that, though I don’t know if the Ken Penders situation would prevent SEGA from doing that if they wanted to. I assume they’d be fine as long as they stuck closer to how the clan is portrayed in SA1 and don’t draw any parallels to any plot points or characters from Penders’ works. He doesn’t own Knuckles, Tikal, Pachacamac, or any of those associated characters, and it’s not like he owns the rights to make a compelling story about echidnas.
Anyway, great video. Can’t wait to see more.
I agree with all this! Had no idea Hesse confirmed that as the Pac-Man. I’m wondering how they plan to tie Knuckles to that tribe as well. Will they be extinct at the time of the movie and does time move differently in Sonic’s world than on Earth? Wonder if Knuckles is still the last one in this lore. I appreciate the well thought out comment! I’ll definitely come back to Knuckles when the movie is out

I'm totally with you here. The shot of Sonic on what is CLEARLY Angel Island with the Master Emerald makes me VERY excited for what's to come. Never thought in a million years that a live-action _Sonic_ franchise would be among my favorite video game movies. Don't get me wrong, I love Sonic and its lore, but man... With the last few games... I just didn't think Sega understood Sonic anymore. Glad to see the films are doing him justice, and I'm genuinely curious about Frontiers.

With Sonic 2’s release, yeah they nailed the plotline from from Sonic 3. Hell, tails inclusion in the movie was also favored by the fans since the original Voice actress for tails got to shine in this movie!
Heck, I’m just glad that this movie did so well, and it’s clear that we might end up moving away from the human world back to Sonic’s dimension. There’s ALOT of ways to make these stories happen. Spin-offs, Tv shows, hell, Sega can move on and Make a Golden Axe or Phantasy Star movie if they wanted!
Point is, Sega’s game franchises are Ripe with Movie potential. It just depends if we’re even going to get 100% quality. That and considering how well Sonic turned out, they can choose to either continue going this direction or jumping onto a new ship after their 3rd entry.
Cause let’s face it, there are TTTOOOO MANY DAMN SONIC CHARACTERS! His universe is freaking Stuffed with a Cast of C to F tier characters that aren’t really that popular in the Series! So if they stop somewhere, it may as well be here.

Now that the movie has come out, I gotta say I really like how they approach knuckles. He’s still a bit of a dunce, but instead of being a genuine idiot that doesn’t have any remnant of a brain, he’s only “dumb” because he doesn’t understand modern technology. In every other aspect though, he’s pretty solid. He’s got a militaristic vibe of getting to the point of things and having a strong focus on his goal, he’s incredibly strong and probably even stronger than sonic in many aspects. He even has the same core backstory and motives of being part of a warrior echidna clan that possessed the emerald but was lost to an unfortunate war. And now is in search for the emerald, getting tricked by Eggman along the way and eventually leaning to work with and befriend sonic.

As an early 90s kid, I appreciate this run down. I actually grew up reading the Archie comics, but stopped in middle school. The reference to Julie-sue and Laura-sue was like a wave of nostalgia, as Knuckles and his crew were my favorites in the comics. Thanks for the memories.

One thing that seems extremely consistent is Knuckles getting tricked by Robotnik. It seems as though that's also gonna be his character arc in the newer sonic movies.
The idea of Sonic Boom as an animated series came first; Rise of Lyric had to hastily adopt elements from the show's inception during its development.

It's sad to think that Sega probably won't ever be able to focus heavily on Knuckles' family history because Penders would try to claim ownership on it if they even seem to do anything too close to what he wrote.
(also as a Brit who didn't get the Archie comics and read a bunch of them later on... I kinda really dig the entire history he wrote with the Clan and the Dark Legion and everything... so it really sucks)

Sad thing is in the Archie comics from before the game came out the Master Emerald was created with what fourteen or so regular chaos emeralds were absorbed by Mammoth mangol and when that power was turned against him by Knuckles hiding relatives the Brotherhood of Guardians

Never liked Sonic Undergroud, (or as we knew it in France, "Sonic le Rebel") and the fact the already well known Knuckles by the time the series was on TV got inexplicably renamed "Castagne" in the French dub doesn’t help. (Nor did the atrociously of key singing of the same French dub.)

I've been seeing a lot of people lately (mostly on Twitter) claim Knuckles is a "racist" caricature of Africans due to his character design being based on Jamaicans and for the fact that he has dreads that are reminiscent of a black person. Furthermore knuckles is the last of his kind who were a tribe of indigenous echidnas that were located on a remote island that possesed weapons such as spears and dressed up as what they claimed stereotypical African tribes to look like (facial paint, gold necklaces, tiki/ caveman esque attires, feathered clothing, Pygmy skin tones, ect ect) which (in their words) equated to the Ancient Echidnas being inherently racist stereotypes that used tribal aesthetics. Does anybody agree with these claims?
