Birdetta started as a punching bag for me and my friends back in Mario Tennis on the N64. We thought she was gross with her big face hole, obnoxious bow and gaudy diamond ring. We would always set her as the NPC to gang up on, but over the years I’ve grown to love her. She is now my go to character whenever possible, and my top Amiibo wishlist character. My love for her went from ironic to un-ironic real quick lmao
Birdetta's super cute and interesting. I'd love it if they made her a steed in the mainline games to match Yoshi, only using projectile eggs instead of a prehensile tongue.

Honestly, Birdetta’s animations in the new Strikers game made me realize how much I like her, she’s got a very different vibe from most of the other characters but it feels so natural for the series. I also like her design, makes me wish they’d put more ‘creature’ish character designs like her and Yoshi into the playable character rotations for the spin-offs, instead of just regular enemies
I’ve always kinda thought that Birdo’s gender was done originally as a joke as that type of humor was once pretty funny in Japan, but as it became a more sensitive topic, Nintendo started straying further and further away from it until they just canonized her as a female. Like, Nintendo doesn’t participate in pride month, and if they did, Birdo would be a prime mascot. But birdo IS, however, featured on international women’s day.
She's been correctly gendered while still being called "Birdo" several more times than "Birdetta" has been used in any context, so if the idea ever was that she wanted to change her name I guess she decided not to. But also, with the Japanese equivalents being Catherine and Cathy, that probably wasn't the intent anyway; she just likes being called by cute nicknames.

Daisy was never made as "Luigi's girlfriend", she debuted in Super Mario Land, a game Luigi wasn't even featured in, as the damsel in distress of the game, replacing Peach likely due to the fact that the game takes place in a different kingdom, Sarasaland, instead of Peach's Mushroom Kingdom. Also Toadette has never been stated to be a love interest for Toad and their relationship seems to be strictly platonic.
1) Daisy was created to served as the damsel in distress in Super Mario Land, it wasen't until NES Open Tournament Golf and some of the Mario manga from the 90's were they made her Luigi's love interest. 2) Toadette was created to give Toad a partner in Double Dash. Plus, it was never estableshed that she was Toad's girlfriend
Found this channel over the weekend and I am absolutely addicted. I love the humor (they way you say Super Mario Bros cracks me up), and you still find new ways of blowing our minds with new info from your research. I had heard of Captain Rainbow before but not the Birdetta storyline. Also found very interesting to learn that they used queer voice actors to voice Birdoes in the past as well. Great work!
My interest in her really started as a simple liking for dinosaurs and the color pink. As a 2000s boy, the latter was a HUGE nope in social settings. Unless you wanted to be called "gaaaay". I remember joining my friends in making fun of them and really hating that. When my friends left, I would choose her in Mario Kart Wii, Mario Party 8, Super Sluggers, etc almost as an apology to her lmao Basically, Birdetta's diva-like attitude, overly affectionate personality, wacky design, on and off relationship with Yoshi, and her origins as a villain turned ally to Mario made her waaay more interesting to me when compared to other characters in the series. Plus, I did end up coming out as gay so her queerness made her an instant fan favorite to me and a lot of other queer Mario fans
I started school in the 80s and had a hot pink backpack with Gizmo (from Gremlins) on it. Boys could wear hot pink back then and not get made fun of for some reason.

Considering just how much Birdetta just wants a proper relationship, and the whole Yoshi thing isn't really a thing anymore, I'm not surprised with her depiction in Captain Rainbow. Bopple didn't want her, Yoshi eventually stopped being shipped woth her, and now whether she has any interest in anyone else is purely optional in recent games (and that does include Mario in Origami King). Also, it made my day to see Birdetta say, "I hope you get *****!"

I can't speak for Japanese humour, Lord knows, they have a style completely their own. But in British comedy in the pre-2010's, the PEAK of comedy was either; a straight man being forced to wear women's clothes, or a straight man "accidentally" being attracted to a Trans Woman or someone in Drag, much to their later horror and disgust. I'm glad we don't rely on that kind of humour anymore, but it's dated a lot of media pretty poorly.
Birdo to me is the weirdest "main" characters of the extended Mario character. She's one of the oldest, but wasn't even designed for Mario. Is more popular than Wart, the final boss or any other boss. Her inclusion in SMRPG was definitely to reference something super obscure, and most likely someone that wouldn't be a main Mario staple. Yet Mario Tennis comes out and suddenly she's not only a good guy, but this main sports and party staple.
To add also, I didn't even mention the whole gender controversy which you'd think is the weirdest part. You know they were trying to joke about it before but time started making the topic a lot more sensitive and they wrote themselves in a hole. I also find it weird that Birdo just suddenly became Yoshi's partner on the sole fact they're both dinosaurs, but by that logic, you could have had any other dinosaur from SMW take his double partner role. Or even just have it be Baby Mario, and Shy Guy for Birdo. At least with characters like Daisy or Waluigi, they are clearly that main characters best friend, but we never once saw Yoshi and Birdo interact before they established them. Regardless, I like Birdo, I just always find it weird how she just rose the ranks of Mario character when so many others were delegated to obscure.

By consistently using "Birdo" in successive games, the western divisions of Nintendo have been unfortunately perpetuating an unnecessary slight towards Birdetta's chosen name for over three decades. Ideally, the western branches of Nintendo could rectify this situation by opting for "Birdetta" or "Birdie", names that have been recognized in English localizations as her preferred monikers. However, such a change now could inadvertently bring attention to the fact that she has been deadnamed for all these years, causing potential backlash. Ironically, all this could have been avoided had Nintendo simply preserved her original Japanese name, Catherine! No, the localizers didn't add a "transphobic" joke. They (for some reason) changed the character's name from Catherine to Birdo. The Japanese manual said that Catherine prefers to be called Cathy (Ack!), so the localizers just came up with a similar nickname.

The main differences in birdo and yoshi's designs in much of the 3d stuff is simply coloration and mout/nose. That could be chalked up to designers taking an easier route of just making a yoshi model, and then altering it into birdo's model.
My head cannon for both Yoshi and Birdo is that they are both a hermaphroditic species, which fixes a lot of issues and makes each of them make more sense.

Birdo is honestly the most fun boss character in any game, I especially liked how she was portrayed in Mario advance 1, her voice is so funny and beating her is very satisfying, would like to see her return as a boss in a 2D game But i don't think This specific birdo would be a boss, maybe instead a birdo species but either way the character is still very cool.

Considering we've seen a Birdo hatch in SMRPG I'm going to go on the unpopular opinion that Birdo is its own species, much like how Yoshi is its own species. Some can be friendly (Wario's Woods, Mario Party) or others hostile (SMB2) but I don't think every Birdo is the same Birdo across games.
It just hit me: the ending of SMB2 (where you find out it was all a dream) is directly inspired by the "Dream Factory" theme of the festival. Never made that connection until now. 🤦

I'm pretty sure like most people, I started off as not liking birdo as I found her appearance a bit disturbing but once I started playing Mario strikers charged I decided, "Y'know what? I need a good team so what the heck I'll pick birdo." and after realizing she is a BEAST when it came to scoring shots, I grew to like her design more and more overtime. She's one of the few characters that has claws. Yeah that was it, I like Birdo because she has really nice claws and she was a good teammate in strikers.
I think remember reading about birdos gender stuff in super smash brawl, in the trophy's, I was thoroughly interested, Japanese and other Asians have always been interested in trans characters for better or worse
Birdetta is a wonderful character and I was hype when she got into MK8 as the first new character. That being said, they really shouldve kept the Katherine name for the west like they do in Japan. Or at least have her be Katherine the Birdo, since there are more than one Birdo variation.
I can honestly say if Birdo wasn’t trans I probably wouldn’t care about her as much as I do. Maybe it’s because as a kid playing double dash I was like “oh girl Yoshi” only later to find out she’s (so far) the only lgbtq Mario character, it just makes her feel special compared to so many other Mario characters that just get left behind. Super Mario Bros 2 USA does take place in the dream realm of Sub-Con, doesn't necessarily take place in Mario's Dreams. In the manual it's established Mario first as a dream about the place from the residents asking for help. After waking up Mario tells his friends about it, and I believe the Japanese version they all had the same dream too but don't quote me on that last part. Later on they find a cave and inside a staircase leading to a door that led them to Sub-Con. This is also why the specific Shy Guys from Sub-Con can show up in Mario Superstar Baseball. In addition to Birdo referencing the events of SMB2USA in other games. Super Smash Bros trophy descriptions can't be used for obtaining lore about characters like Birdo since Smash Bros Trophy is one not canon, but secondarily gets stuff wrong quiet often. The strangeness of Birdo's descriptions overall is because she is intended to be trans, but as to be expected that isn't always respected. But at least she's part of the Women Of Racing Organization in Mario Kart. Birdo does actually follow up on the claim she made in SuperStar Saga in the Paper Mario games. Not only does she reference her past but also even sings a love song about Yoshi.

Daisy was never made as "Luigi's girlfriend", she debuted in Super Mario Land, a game Luigi wasn't even featured in, as the damsel in distress of the game, replacing Peach likely due to the fact that the game takes place in a different kingdom, Sarasaland, instead of Peach's Mushroom Kingdom.
Also Toadette has never been stated to be a love interest for Toad and their relationship seems to be strictly platonic.
1) Daisy was created to served as the damsel in distress in Super Mario Land, it wasen't until NES Open Tournament Golf and some of the Mario manga from the 90's were they made her Luigi's love interest.
2) Toadette was created to give Toad a partner in Double Dash. Plus, it was never estableshed that she was Toad's girlfriend

I had heard of Captain Rainbow before but not the Birdetta storyline. Also found very interesting to learn that they used queer voice actors to voice Birdoes in the past as well. Great work!
My interest in her really started as a simple liking for dinosaurs and the color pink. As a 2000s boy, the latter was a HUGE nope in social settings. Unless you wanted to be called "gaaaay". I remember joining my friends in making fun of them and really hating that. When my friends left, I would choose her in Mario Kart Wii, Mario Party 8, Super Sluggers, etc almost as an apology to her lmao
Basically, Birdetta's diva-like attitude, overly affectionate personality, wacky design, on and off relationship with Yoshi, and her origins as a villain turned ally to Mario made her waaay more interesting to me when compared to other characters in the series. Plus, I did end up coming out as gay so her queerness made her an instant fan favorite to me and a lot of other queer Mario fans
I started school in the 80s and had a hot pink backpack with Gizmo (from Gremlins) on it. Boys could wear hot pink back then and not get made fun of for some reason.

Considering just how much Birdetta just wants a proper relationship, and the whole Yoshi thing isn't really a thing anymore, I'm not surprised with her depiction in Captain Rainbow. Bopple didn't want her, Yoshi eventually stopped being shipped woth her, and now whether she has any interest in anyone else is purely optional in recent games (and that does include Mario in Origami King).

I can't speak for Japanese humour, Lord knows, they have a style completely their own. But in British comedy in the pre-2010's, the PEAK of comedy was either; a straight man being forced to wear women's clothes, or a straight man "accidentally" being attracted to a Trans Woman or someone in Drag, much to their later horror and disgust.
I'm glad we don't rely on that kind of humour anymore, but it's dated a lot of media pretty poorly.

Birdo to me is the weirdest "main" characters of the extended Mario character.
She's one of the oldest, but wasn't even designed for Mario. Is more popular than Wart, the final boss or any other boss. Her inclusion in SMRPG was definitely to reference something super obscure, and most likely someone that wouldn't be a main Mario staple.
Yet Mario Tennis comes out and suddenly she's not only a good guy, but this main sports and party staple.

I also find it weird that Birdo just suddenly became Yoshi's partner on the sole fact they're both dinosaurs, but by that logic, you could have had any other dinosaur from SMW take his double partner role. Or even just have it be Baby Mario, and Shy Guy for Birdo.
At least with characters like Daisy or Waluigi, they are clearly that main characters best friend, but we never once saw Yoshi and Birdo interact before they established them.

The decision by Nintendo's English localization team to continue localizing Catherine's name as "Birdo" is puzzling, particularly given the fact that it primarily just served as a basis for a regrettable two-sentence transphobic "joke" in a NES instruction manual 35 years ago.
A significant number of people online may not be aware that the name "Birdo" is, in essence, Birdetta's deadname. By consistently using "Birdo" in successive games, the western divisions of Nintendo have been unfortunately perpetuating an unnecessary slight towards Birdetta's chosen name for over three decades.
Ideally, the western branches of Nintendo could rectify this situation by opting for "Birdetta" or "Birdie", names that have been recognized in English localizations as her preferred monikers. However, such a change now could inadvertently bring attention to the fact that she has been deadnamed for all these years, causing potential backlash.
Ironically, all this could have been avoided had Nintendo simply preserved her original Japanese name, Catherine! I'm clueless as to why they didn't stick with it in the first place, it fits her way more than either of the "bird" names. 😕

No, the localizers didn't add a "transphobic" joke. They (for some reason) changed the character's name from Catherine to Birdo. The Japanese manual said that Catherine prefers to be called Cathy (Ack!), so the localizers just came up with a similar nickname.

However, the localizers changed Catherine’s name to Birdo, which is not a feminine name at all. It’s not even related to her original name. It’s like calling someone named Jessica “Frogbert” or someone named Samantha “Hawko”.
The sound of Birdo also doesn’t convey the same femininity as Cathy or Catherine. While Birdo is not a real name, and we can’t say for sure what gender it implies, the “-o” ending is more common in masculine names in many languages (such as Mario, Leo, Bruno, etc.). The “-etta” ending in Birdetta is more feminine, as it is similar to names like Julietta, Rosetta, Henrietta, etc. So, it makes sense to think that Birdo sounds less feminine than Birdetta, even though this is somewhat subjective.
If the localizers wanted to keep the same idea of Catherine having a nickname that she prefers, they could have used Birdetta as her full name and Birdie as her nickname. That would be more consistent with the original Japanese version.

The main differences in birdo and yoshi's designs in much of the 3d stuff is simply coloration and mout/nose. That could be chalked up to designers taking an easier route of just making a yoshi model, and then altering it into birdo's model.
5:40 Ostros are the ostrich/emu like enemies that are ridden by Shy Guys. The SMB2 credits mixed them up and called them Birdo.
My head cannon for both Yoshi and Birdo is that they are both a hermaphroditic species, which fixes a lot of issues and makes each of them make more sense.

Considering we've seen a Birdo hatch in SMRPG I'm going to go on the unpopular opinion that Birdo is its own species, much like how Yoshi is its own species. Some can be friendly (Wario's Woods, Mario Party) or others hostile (SMB2) but I don't think every Birdo is the same Birdo across games.
I mean, there are literally different color variants in SMB2 that each have different voices in BS SMB:USA.

I'm pretty sure like most people, I started off as not liking birdo as I found her appearance a bit disturbing but once I started playing Mario strikers charged I decided, "Y'know what? I need a good team so what the heck I'll pick birdo." and after realizing she is a BEAST when it came to scoring shots, I grew to like her design more and more overtime. She's one of the few characters that has claws. Yeah that was it, I like Birdo because she has really nice claws and she was a good teammate in strikers.

Super Mario Bros 2 USA does take place in the dream realm of Sub-Con, doesn't necessarily take place in Mario's Dreams. In the manual it's established Mario first as a dream about the place from the residents asking for help. After waking up Mario tells his friends about it, and I believe the Japanese version they all had the same dream too but don't quote me on that last part. Later on they find a cave and inside a staircase leading to a door that led them to Sub-Con. This is also why the specific Shy Guys from Sub-Con can show up in Mario Superstar Baseball. In addition to Birdo referencing the events of SMB2USA in other games.
Super Smash Bros trophy descriptions can't be used for obtaining lore about characters like Birdo since Smash Bros Trophy is one not canon, but secondarily gets stuff wrong quiet often.
The strangeness of Birdo's descriptions overall is because she is intended to be trans, but as to be expected that isn't always respected. But at least she's part of the Women Of Racing Organization in Mario Kart.
