Birdo is similar in this regard, yet in VERY different ways. In games where their relationship is less defined (or nonexistent), Birdo is shown to be quite the hopeless romantic. She's always chasing after love, hoping to find the one who's right for her, believing strongly in true love. It's clear how much passion she has for love and romance, and how she believes love is her own key to happiness. With all this taken into account, I've come to my own conclusion on Yoshi and Birdo's relationship. I like to think they ARE genuinely happy together, but express their happiness in very different ways. Birdo wears her ring as a reminder to herself just how happy she is, having finally found the perfect partner. Their relationship means everything to her, and carrying a representation of her own true love with her at all times is just how she most comfortably expresses how happy she is and how far she has come. Yoshi, on the other hand, doesn't need that reminder. He expresses his own happiness through action, choosing to be there for Birdo and having fun with her. Board games, kart racing, any sport he can think of, he wants to experience it all with her, along with his closest friends, because enjoying life is what Yoshi is all about. Again, this is all my own interpretation, and it's very possible (and likely) no one at nintendo ever put a single bit of thought into this, but I don't care! I like to believe they're happy, because it feels good to think about! In Yoshi's Island, Yoshis used eggs as a projectile attack. One could argue that this was a trait he picked up from Birdo. However, Yoshi's Island takes place when Mario and Luigi were children, so it's extremely unlikely that Yoshi knew Birdo at this point because they've only been shown knowing eachother during times where the Mario Bros are adults. It seems that Yoshi and Birdo are both okay using eggs as projectile attacks and have both done so before even meeting. Also, I think it's likely that the eggs they attack with are unfertilized considering that they both seem to just be able to continuosly lay them without to needing any help from a partner in generating them, so they never had the potential to become children anyway. They are both the egglaying variety of their species, so they cannot create offspring together (even if their species would be genetically compatible), so those eggs are not fertillised.
I suspect the other characters disdain towards birdo is just coming from transphobia, and whilst yoshi loves here, he feels judged by others and thus is afraid to show his commitment to birdo.
