One of the finest keyboard and accordion players who's ever lived. Mick, thank you for your musical contributions to this world. We very much appreciate it.
Just been watching the documentary “Everything is possible”; Mel sums it up: “Mick was (is) a genius”. So true. East is Easter another great example of your extraordinary presence on a track. Thanks for this, great memories
Mick rises up through the clouds⛅️.....in the City of Light. With the Book of brilliant things instrumental solo.... Classic. Who never got a shiver down the spine listening to the one and only Mick MacNeil at his best. Jim and Charlie are you watching in 2024? Hope so!!! Mick was the heart 💛 in the logo. Thanking you so much for the post. 👌
Without doubt a piece of music that is almost unsurpassed in my life since I first heard it way back in the 80's. I was so chuffed when it was on Live in the City Of Light, it's been a constant companion on my journey since. Simply love it.
Good to hear you play so beautifully, i remember you from the days of the Barnets playing accordion. We went to Bellarmine secondary and my husbands mum Mrs Campbell stayed across the street from your mum, she still lives there at 91 years young.
My in-laws stay at 70 Lunderston. I married Colin no longer with us though. I was in a wee group at Bellarmine and I remember we went to a studio in the city with the "Barnett's" and we sang one year at the school concert which your band also performed at.
Mick, that melody was the soundtrack of my youth. Thank you so much for writing it, I hope you read this and in some way understand the importance to me of what you achieved with this band. Nobody comes close to your playing that has played with the band since you left. Beautiful.
I have too agree chris ,from a young 16 yr old aberdeenshire loon 1980 ,first time heard miick play blew my mind.absoloute genious of the keys.most missed in the band.love that song.👏👏👍
Please Mick! Come back to your fans! This is amazing! SM with you was gold! But now there is the time to step out again! Produce your own stuff! Thank you so mutch!
The legend in his jim jams. I'm in Thailand in my hammock with the rain coming down loving the vibe. The tune has been with me since Sparkle In The Rain.
Every time I hear that resolve to Gm (rather than the expected Am), the bottom just drops out of my world. Absolute emotional surrender. Thank you Mick for this incredibly beautiful piece.
Best live pianist I’ve seen, such quality. Instrumental to SM success without any doubt. Would love to see you play again in any format with old band mates especially DF, any chances. There’s plenty who would love to see it.
Listen Mick - there is me and many others, I'm sure, who would part with their well earned cash to come somewhere to see you playing this, mostly this among other stuff. This piece of music is sensational - it stirs me every time I listen to you play it. C'mon Michael, a wee gig somewhere, please? Thank you for the voice and the eyes - and the memory shine.
Brilliant, Brilliant, Brilliant. Wow. Please keep posting these videos Mick. Alive and Kicking, Theme from great cities, Someone somewhere in summertime etc. wow 💙👍🏻😀
In reality, simple minds is not what it used to be. There is someone missing and.... : it's You. Big fan, I often immerse myself in listenning to the mythical albums like street fighting years, new gold dream or in the city of light.... God only knows for how long I will be nostalgic ; Maybe until my last breath.. Have a great christmas.. best regards. Jean-Pierre
Goosebumps 39 years ago,Goosebumps today. Thank you,Grazie Mick ( The Man in the sky) from an italian Simple Minds fan since 1983!! You ,Derek and Mel are always in my (our)hearts . I still love Simple minds ,the actual band....but you were ,you are and you will be forever....SIMPLE MINDS. Greetings from Italy
Thank you Mick, the music you composed with the Minds has been with me all through my life and I listen to it most days. You tap into something very rare and magical that keeps pulling me back.
Manna from heaven Mick! I can't think of a single band from the Eighties that did what you guys did by completely rearranging songs, taking them to a whole new level (This song, East at Easter, New Gold Dream from City of Light), and beyond so they became completely different songs (the rearranged I travel became Ghostdancing; the version of Room that you did at Cash for Kids became something entirely different in the SFY sessions). Mighty rearrangers indeed!
Best keyboard player of all time for me is Mick. Regardless of whether he plays accordion, piano or synth, the emotions and atmosphere are at the highest possible level.
Sounds just like the version on Live In The City Of Light. My absolute favourite track on that album, the killer piano accompanied by Charlie's soaring guitars. "5 to 1, 1 to 5, nobody here gets out alive". Thanks so much Mick.
Still gives me chills just like the first time I heard this song. This solo version is awesome. It’s amazing that you wrote this lovely song. 40 something years later, I’m still absolutely blown away.
Love all your playing and compositions Mick. Would love to see You out there again, giving the people what they want. Credit to You for living the life you want though. Respect.
Amazing! I enjoyed the coffee and chat we had a couple of years ago. Thanks for signing the New Gold Dream CD for my bud Gary. He cried when he received it in the post. Great memories Sir. I wish you and the family the best of health and happiness. Lyle 👍
i cant tell you how much hearing today your melodies to these classics bring back so many memories of being posted in Germany in the mid-late 80s, taking a whole week off with the lads, following Simple Minds round Europe on the Street Fighting Years tour - camping and slumming it, living off sausages and lager! Happy Days that also bring tears to my eyes.... Much love!
Always loved the original Sparkle in the Rain version of this song until I heard this on Live in the City of Light. Reminds me of being a young man without a care in the world
Fantastic playing Mick . The sound of Simple Minds in the 80's For Me and the reason I learnt to play keyboards . Thank You for inspiring Me and so many others all around the world to do so .
This piece of music is the reason I bought a piano and started to try to teach myself. Thanks Mick for posting this! I’ve a long way to go, but the journey is all part of the fun 🎹 ❤
Loved the song from the first time I heard it on Sparkle in the Rain, way back. And this version is just so brilliant. Love it to peaces. Thanks for this Mick ! And I must admit, each time I'm looking out for new snap shots in your videos of Vatersay. Looks like such a fantastic and peacefull place.
I grew up listening to SM, live and on vinyl. Wonderful being reminded why i loved that band and a sad reminder of how things changed with the departures of Derek, Mel and your good self. Thank you Mick
How kind of you to share these videos and this piece of beauty! So many memories of my youth linked to this lovely melody...the real Minds in there. Thank you Mick!
Brilliant Mick, your skills, and this music are still up there with the best. I have fond memories of hearing you compose some film score in your home studio, while I worked quietly in the background. Great moments that never leave you.
Thank you, Mick. One of the things I loved about Simple Minds in the 80s was how you were constantly rearranging songs, and this might be the ultimate example. Those were heady times.
The absolute Goat. Take note SM hire all the protools, ableton live operators, session players if you can call them that all you like, you will never replace what is in that man’s fingers.
Fantastic Mick, big Simple Minds fan. The hairs on the back of my neck stand up every time you play one of your Simple Minds tracks. Worst day for me is when you left the band. Hopefully i can come and see you and Derek Forbes do something together. Simple Minds are nothing without you Derek and Mel. Lots of love 😀👍🏻💙
I remember the ahoy stadium version of this. Unbelievably good. Mick McNeil, world class. Said it for years. Top bloke too. Thanks for the upload. Cans on in bed tonight and I will listen to every note in detail x
Absolutely brilliant, I remember hearing the version/ arrangement on Live In The City Of Light when I was 14 and bought the album, just fantastic, you probably get sick of hearing it but I so wish you would rejoin Simple Minds Mick
I can’t believe how much expression and feel you can extract from what I am assuming is a Nord semi-weighted key-bed? You are the reason I started playing keyboards so again thank you for the gift and the joy of music. I would love to hear you play a slowed down piano version of Glittering Prize, like on the Barrowlands Live version 85 which was on Promised You a Miracle Live 12 inch. Live in The City if Light remains my favourite SM album and one of my biggest criticisms of the band without you and Derek is that they don’t seem to re-arrange or jam things the way you did. Listening to The Book live after the Sparkle in the Rain version was mind-blowing. Derek’s “Echoes’ album was similar, including his piano version of The American. The two of you together could take some of your other songs to magnificent new places
Mick, this is one of the most impactful songs you've created by a long shot. I've been sitting here captivated by the wonderful tune that's so calming, thanks for posting it on RUclips.
The live reworking brought me back to learning the piano after I watched the Ahoy concert excerpts on The Tube in the 80s. The piano was low in the mix on the album version I think whereas the live version gave it space and made it more than equal to the thumping bass and drums in the climax. Wonderful, inspiring stuff!
Simply the best ………Thank you so much for posting these vids……..can never get enough……would love to see a New Gold Dream vid like this….hope all is well Mick😊
One of the finest keyboard and accordion players who's ever lived. Mick, thank you for your musical contributions to this world. We very much appreciate it.
2:15 transition is such a beautiful transition. Goosebumps for this composer!
Lieber Mick,
wenn meine Reise zu Ende geht,
wird dieser Song erklingen…
Mehr Ehre kann ich Dir nicht gebieten …
Sound of my Life !
Danke dafür …
Just been watching the documentary “Everything is possible”; Mel sums it up: “Mick was (is) a genius”. So true. East is Easter another great example of your extraordinary presence on a track. Thanks for this, great memories

Thanking you so much for the post. 👌
Mick the soul of simple minds❤❤❤
Thank you for producing some of the most beautiful music ever form is temporary class is permanent RESPECT
Love that song so much. Wish I could play like that. Very talented guy Mick ❤️ up on the cat walk was another favourite.
Without doubt a piece of music that is almost unsurpassed in my life since I first heard it way back in the 80's. I was so chuffed when it was on Live in the City Of Light, it's been a constant companion on my journey since. Simply love it.
thank you mick, for the lightning that shoots up and *SPARKLES* in the rain.
Mick is like Jean-Michel Jarre, painting landscapes with music. SM missing you!
Mick can play, Jarre programmes, nowhere near the same thing to me.
Good to hear you play so beautifully, i remember you from the days of the Barnets playing accordion. We went to Bellarmine secondary and my husbands mum Mrs Campbell stayed across the street from your mum, she still lives there at 91 years young.
Thanks for that money Carol
I guess you meant memory lol
Hahaha, ye
@ what number on Lunderston were you?
My in-laws stay at 70 Lunderston. I married Colin no longer with us though. I was in a wee group at Bellarmine and I remember we went to a studio in the city with the "Barnett's" and we sang one year at the school concert which your band also performed at.
What a beautiful melody, so peaceful yet has a harmonic tone to move you, all senses are moved!!!! Superb piece of composition.
Thanks for listening
Mick, that melody was the soundtrack of my youth. Thank you so much for writing it, I hope you read this and in some way understand the importance to me of what you achieved with this band. Nobody comes close to your playing that has played with the band since you left. Beautiful.
I appreciate very much your comments.
Completely agree, I yearn to hear this played live. Utterly spectacular
What a beautiful melody that is. Has the ability to rise you up on a cloudy day, so atmospheric!!!!
Mick, this makes me happy and sad at the same time.
To see what we had with you, and we lost it, never recovered, that is a fact 😢
Such is life Keir.
Mamma mia Mick... Mamma mia... Dolcezza, delicatezza e quelle pause nei cambi di ritmo... Grazie da chi ti ha visto live in Italia piu' volte🙏👏👏👏🤝🤗
The heart of Simple Minds!💚🎼🎹👌🏼

I - CANNOT - STOP - LISTENING - TO - THIS - MASTERPIECE (on headphones as advised by the master).
Peaceful, really hypnotic ❤
Reminds me when I first heard this stunning version on the live album in 1987 at the age of 15. Great.
This live version was such a great re creation. i can imagine the emotion during the concert. very moving.
When true talent shines it shines through you`ve been in the shadows for to long!
Still my favourite song and this version from Alive in Rotterdam is the absolute best. Love it, cheers Mick🤙
I have to agree with you here I remember seeing the tour in Glasgow and Book of Brilliant things was and always will be my favourite
1 zillion percent agree. It motivated me to start playing the piano a few years ago
Beautiful. No one plays those keyboard melodies like you.
Absolutely stunning. A masterpiece by Michael ❤😊❤😊
Beautiful, makes me go all melancholy when I hear this, thank you to the man on the squeeze box🪗 in Verona my favourite concert of all time...
Brilliant, Brilliant, Brilliant. Wow. Please keep posting these videos Mick.
Alive and Kicking, Theme from great cities, Someone somewhere in summertime etc. wow 💙👍🏻😀

Spot on 👌
Mick of brilliant sounds. So beautiful.
🤜❤️🤛
For me this is the best SM song of all time. So many great versions out there. Mick's piano playing makes it unique
Mick, you are immense. You have given so many of us joy with your musical gift. Thank you 💙

Non parlo Inglese..ho cantato la tua musica mentalmente.. ogni Nota 🎶 un emozione.. indelebile!
Always loved the original Sparkle in the Rain version of this song until I heard this on Live in the City of Light. Reminds me of being a young man without a care in the world
Yes yes yes, that version! Who had the idear to do it like that?? Its Briljant heavenley
Goosebumps listening to this and Barra awash in sunshine.
Fantastic playing Mick . The sound of Simple Minds in the 80's For Me and the reason I learnt to play keyboards . Thank You for inspiring Me and so many others all around the world to do so .
My god this takes me back to when I was younger. I played this on my Sony Walkman so many times the tape kept jamming
That’s absolutely wonderful. My god mick… wish you had never left…
Another piece of Mick magic and pure gold! One of the greatest modern day composers and pianists. Thank you Mick 🙏
Such a beautiful arrangement - class! Stirs up so many emotions. Thanks Mick for these wonderful tunes!

The best Simple Minds line-up ever; Mel Gaynor, Derk Forbes and Mick MacNeil...
OMG you did it Mick.
Absolutely amazing beyond words.
You sir are a maestro.
Thank you.
Aww man...this takes me back to the secc in 87(I think)
BOBT has always been one of my favourites, and it still is.
