    Do you remember the Wake up Radio system in the eighties ? i remember the first time i heard it. i was litteraly awaken by the song at seven, probably half-dreaming, then hearing the radio DJ saying "this is the new Simple minds song.... Mandela day". Slow paced.. but subtly building up then Charlie s incredible guitar solo !!! I still remember how uplifted i felt that day ! The album wasnt even out.

    Watching this, it's difficult to piece together how things fell out to the point of Mel opting out of the sessions. These glances behind the scenes are wonderful. It was an interesting time for the band as Jim would say the wheels were coming off after 10 years of the cycle that claimed a few casualties. Love the footage of Jim and the family, Jasmin was adorable.

      John Giblin bailed too. Unplugged his bass and walked out of the band without a word according to Jim after a ahem discussion with Trevor Horn

    • @guyincognito1560
      @guyincognito1560 7 месяцев назад

      @@HighlandMike325 I'd never heard that, very interesting. I just knew it was abrupt. Read that Trevor could drive you nuts cos he had a certain sound he was chasing with a tenacity. Most producers are like that though?

    • @HighlandMike325
      @HighlandMike325 7 месяцев назад

      @@guyincognito1560From Jim's eulogy to John when he died last year on Simple Minds social media
      "July '88, London. On entering the control room of Sarm Studio that afternoon it was too obvious that I had walked into a tense situation occurring between then Minds bassist, John Giblin, and our record producer at that moment, Trevor Horn.
      Mannered gents both, there was nothing really to suggest that things might unduly get out of hand. It did however, and badly so, when only a few minutes later, and without any signal of his intentions, John calmly unplugged his bass in the middle of recording and walked out the room with no words. Gone from Simple Minds, but never to be forgotten."

    • @guyincognito1560
      @guyincognito1560 7 месяцев назад

      @@HighlandMike325 Much appreciated. Remember being puzzled when I bought the record and seeing just the three on the cover but John and Mel were in the credits. Went to see them in Manheim not long after and there's Malcolm. I thought John gave them a great dynamic, too young to realize what a force he was at the time. Trevor is a cheeky fella, being a bass player myself, it's not hard to recognize the talent in them both. Suppose Trevor just pushed it too hard as he tended to do. Thanks for taking the time, best.
