As a former tech for 5 years and current personal trainer, I encourage all techs to exercise by doing mobility, stretch, or yoga to take the stress off the work. Like he said, your body is your money maker.

I worked 48 years. Always raised the ramp a few centimetres to avoid straining my back. At BMW the X5 wheels were very heavy. They supplied a wheel lift. Made it so easy. Same with gearboxes and axles. Always used a foam pad even setting a car on the ramp.

I’m 36 and I get sore after a long days work. But just had a meeting where I told the bosses that this isn’t something I want to do forever. I want out in the next ten. I don’t know what exactly that means as far as the next steps but I do know I don’t want to be 65-67 years old still turning wrenches

i studied exercise sports and science in college. been a tech almost 10 years now and i do agree with you for the most part. good working height, and lifting correctly. lift with your legs! However, i do believe exercising regularly and stretching will benefit you in this industry. FWIW, i had back surgery when i was 17, and after i recovered i was able to strengthen my muscles again and have 0 pain even in this career. Lifting weights can be beneficial in this career because parts can be heavy, and not having the strength to lift them can also injure the tech trying to remove/replace the part which is why i advocate for exercising regularly and staying in shape. Key words, staying in shape. not bulking power lifting etc unless you know how to do it correctly. the most common cause of weight lifting injuries in a gym is incorrect form/not knowing your body’s limits.

45yr old Marine Tech with 22 years in the industry here. We spend a lot of time in tight spaces, bent over and kneeling. I've had knee surgery already but it's the carpal tunnel that will take you out, it's a real threat that a lot of guys wrenching never think about. Don't ignore tingling fingers or numb hands.

Cubital tunnel/ulnar nerve entrapment too. I have that at 33, there are days my whole forearm from elbow to the tip of my pinkie are on fire. Stretches help a ton with the nerve issues but there are still times that there's nothing for it. Luckily it's in my non-dominant hand, so far anyway.

My fellow techs reading this, please be as nice to your body as possible. I was not nearly as careful as I should have been when I started out, and only a year later I already regret it. Sometimes my back hurts so bad I can barely walk (got it checked out, no pemanent damage but the bitch just decides to hurt like hell sometimes), and for about 8 months now I haven't been able to sit comfortably, seems like I fractured my tailbone in an incident involving a tire balancer. I'm 24, and my body is way more broken than it ought to be at my age. I had to relearn how to work so as to avoid triggering my back, and I just kinda deal with near constant pain in my tailbone now. Please heed this man's words. I, for one, really wish I had been more careful. Don't be like me, and wish you'd taken better care of yourself - just take better care of yourself now so you're not hurtin all the time like me. Trust me, you'll only regret not doing it sooner.

I’ve done Karate for 28 years (Goju) and frequently use the lessons from my karate practice in the shop and garage: up to and including calling it a day when something simply does not feel right while lifting, grasping or in terms of posture. It is not slacking. It is about being able to work Tomorrow and next week!
I’m not a machine! Though I wish I was, it’s one of the reason I’ve chosen to work with metal and machines! I find the juxtaposition fascinating and meditate on it frequently. This is also why we must use and make tools! What kind of mechanics are we if we’re not using machines to do most of the work?!
My secrets? Stretching, good nutrition and rest, rest, rest! Our work is our workout and that’s quite a privilege if you know how to play it!
I’m 32 and I can swing a #26 sledge with one arm. I’m not sure what I can bench anymore: but my grip strength is somewhere between 240-280lbs. I can press my palms to the floor from a standing position… I do boxing for cardio, running is too hard on the knees if you’re not doing it on soft earth!
    Stretch. Every. Day!

Lift at the gym, not the shop. The gym and having a higher level of fitness make it all easier. Where people go wrong, weightlifting, is ego lifting. There are safe ways to lift and bulk. Focus on form and use proper technique, dont just ego lift. An under hood creeper is $500, but your body is priceless

TOO LATE for me. Please believe Mike. I’m 70 now. Shots in the back don’t last long. I’m resigned to back surgery which scares the hell out of me. 50 yrs in this business has ruined my post work life.
Same goes for carpenters. My friend is getting his 3rd shoulder surgery.
