After I use our restroom, I am referred to as toxic.

Who’s really being toxic? The shop owner or management? Yes. Possibly.

Before I retired at the BMW Dealership I worked at we had 2 techs assigned to what was referred to as fast lane service. It was a big workshop but customers could book a 2 hour slot which was basically 1 hour working on the car, 1 hour seeing in and out including wash and vacuum the car thoroughly. It worked really well for us. We never touched any unscheduled jobs unless they were comebacks which we rarely had to the point they drove in. They tended to do oil services and MOTs which in the UK is a legal safety/emissions requirement for older cars.

Isn't flat rate not a very common pay structure in the UK?

Regardless of industry, as long as people are involved. There will be problems. For your own mental health you need to accept that most people are stupid and will never be reasonable. The only positive method of handling it is to just accept it and move on. I can assure you. You’ll never change anyone’s opinion on anything.

That’s the one thing I don’t like about my job. My co workers are great and the environment is good. But when it comes to parts that’s what all the techs hate. There’s plenty of times during my vehicle inspections I’ll see torn control arm bushings that were installed maybe 10k miles ago because they used the cheapest they could get, and they tell us to “look the other way” just so the advisors don’t lose in having warranty the parts. Or just using cheap parts in general for how much we charge. Like I’m constantly installing duralast brakes on everything, even Audis or my co worker did on a corvette, there was a time they also had me install Dorman control arms on a Porsche. All just so the gp is high

Being labeled a toxic tech for giving realistic expectations or having other people write a check that no one can cash. Classic and part of the on going issue with the industry.

You get labeled toxic if you want to keep to yourself and don’t want to talk to snitches and nosy people.

  • @zachroberts1988

Toxicity starts from the top down... but its always the service advisor/writer and direct management who can either chose to make it worse or try and do right by their techs...

The person without any authority is the only one who can be toxic or complain too much. When the boss or management do it they are justified because YOU need to do better.
    See how that works.

Mike. We always scheduled waiters first thing in the morning.
Just look out there at all the waiter jobs.
    Doctors, restaurants, home repairs.
Some handle it ok. Some are lousy.
I’m on changing industry FB page. They are complaining about things we bitched about in 1972 when I entered this career.
Parts quality has only gone south (or should I say Middle East)
Cars have become way too technical. Just find a new car sticker from 1970 and see what it’s not equipped with.
I see by the end of the video you’ve concluded some things just aren’t going to change or get fixed. Bout like the rest of our country ☹️

At least we're finally starting to admit things won't change in this industry, all this toxicity from management and front desk. Yikes, glad I'm gone, gonna continue ignoring all these Technician job offers if things stay the same. As a fellow young person I do recommend you stay away from this industry unless you have Stockholm's Syndrome, you may actually enjoy it.

Labelled toxic cause I refused to attend shop meetings on my day off and not get paid. lol Why would I drive there to spend three hours being told everything is the techs fault. Shove your shitty cold pizza as compensation. 😂

I disagree with your reactions. Accepting, dealing with it. Moving on. That toxifys yourself, it turns you into "that guy" who gets sucked into shit.
Stick up for yourself, say "fuck no, gravy boy and do his own warranty bullshit. I don't give a fuck "
Label me toxic, for sure. Nobody will bother you once they realize your reactive.
I start jobs without parts all the time, risk vs reward. Sometimes it pays off to take a lunch during parts delivering rather then waste your lunch doing some nonsense. Just make an exit plan if the parts don't arrive, loosening fasteners and preparing cars for work will save you time even if you don't have parts. The job is sold and will need to be done eventually

I just started working a job where I’m quasi-service writing at.
We don’t want folks waiting either. And when we come back to check on something - it’s because the person waiting, that’s sitting 10 feet from me - has asked me to.
The key is for everyone to be a team.
Oh and guess who deals with the customer when they come back in because something meant right?
Yeah - that would also be me.
I don’t need techs “pointing things out”. Time wasted. Without paying customers we don’t have jobs. 🤷🏼‍♂️
