Flat Rate Master.. You are on point with everything you said Mike. I've seen it happen to many times. Also the hypocrisy on RUclips is out of control. There is a big RUclipsr (not sub count) that is always talking about how he would never have Amazon links and how he has so much content coming and how he is going to do this or that and yet he hasn't done anything he said he was going to do and oh yeah, he has Amazon links now. He talks about people for asking everyone to join their channel memberships. He has channel memberships too. What's wrong with asking people to join your channel membership or to check out your merch? Isn't that the point of social media? Everyone does it even him but when I do it or certain other people do it all he does is try talk bad about them. He has a serious problem and is NOT a good person. Why does he worry so much about what other people do and talk bad about them for doing certain things when is doing them things too. I guess it's ok for him to do it but not anyone else. The tool community has gone down hill a lot since he came on here with all of his negativity BS. Sorry for the long rant.

I've personally seen this. I even saw an owner that was the "pinnacle" shop owner that shut the shop down and ended up featured on a number of local news shows because of the scummery.
But I caution against the blanket statements I often make - for instance the technician advocacy bit.
There are times, as an owner, you're forced to do things that seem counterintuitive to that narrative from the outside looking in.
I recently had a friend who shared how terrible his employer was, as we were acquaintances I actually reached out and said "Hey, you're going to lose this employee" and ended up with a full blown education on "there's two sides to every story".
We're all guilty of saying one thing and doing another - especially in the confines of social media.
But I'd say for the most part? The owners and techs in the groups are genuinely working to advance the industry.
Some of those conversations? Could easily be taken out of context, leaving someone looking like a complete DBag simply because of their choice of words.
Except for a handful of groups....those groups? They are wolves in sheep's clothing. Swearing, they are advocates for the motoring public and techs right up to the point it stops them from being filthy rich.
    That's a level of ruthlesssness I just don't possess.

      Lucas
You are pretty consistent on social media, and I was not talking about you. Yes there is 2 sides to every story, but some people constantly paint themselves as 2 faced on the web and if you watch them, like I have started too do, you can see the patterns over and over again, maybe it is just pandering to the audience of the groups they post in, but I really see that as the same thing- the real thoughts come out when people feel safe and are validated by whom they are speaking to/with. As far as context I read the whole conversation not just a random comment from someone. The people I am speaking about are consistently posting 2 very different views, so patterns have been established
Referring to the bad employer story, people will lie to cover themselves, so who do or can you believe? AS you only have 2 peoples viewpoint, did you just believe one story over the other?
You Stated---The owners and techs in the groups are genuinely working to advance the industry. Maybe 5% of the industry does. Most do not and honestly the vast majority of Shop owners are not! hence why you can see post after post of techs getting out of the industry even with hourly pay etc.

@flatratemaster I totally agree. And for the record, I didn't think you were talking about me BUT it did make me stop and check myself.
I, very much accidentally, for the most part, can find myself being hypocritical or doing things that aren't exactly fair for everyone.
When the stress is on, finding balance in decision-making can be tough.
I have a pretty good idea of some of the folks you speak of, and what's frustrating is there's tons of potential with those organizations to do a ton of good.
But they'll never watch this video or another and self reflect - it's always a reason why "it's not me, you're talking too" or "that guy's an idiot".
Self realizations are hard, and I get it. But I've learned that if I do my best to listen to all perspectives, regardless of how I feel about the person with the perspective, I can come away something positive.
It's a real shame that there's good owners who need solid help, getting caught with organizations teaching the EXACT tactics that made this industry $h!t in the first place.
You ever catch me being hypocritical? I fully expect you to call me out. Or atleast ask me about it. I can't see what I can't see.

It wasn’t until a recent comment about having owned/operated your own shop that I kept thinking you should start a business yourself. My experience has convinced me that most A techs will reach the point where owning a shop is the only way they will be compensated fairly. The have your cake and eat it too model of high pay without the headaches of being an owner is a rare environment.
I enjoy the content but occasionally find myself wanting to scream out “If you know so much about what’s wrong with the industry then start your own business and show everyone how it should be done “. You’ve already tried that and here you are working for someone else. Most successful business owners I know live to work and most frustrated employees prefer working to live .

I couldn't agree more with this. Like someone with this much info should surely be able to successfully run there own shop. It's one of those put your money where your mouth is.

Use to work for an old man who had an amazing shop manager, old man passed away and don took over and techs suffered with there pay but the new owner all of sudden had boats, cars, bikes & ton of side chic’s and the techs started to leave. The shop had been in business for decades and took 4 years for it all to fold due to the D bag who took it over

Great video Mike and I agree 100%.Hypocrisy is running like wildfire and looks like it is not slowing down. And as far as the name calling goes thats everywhere, look at Washington. To many people acting like a 3 year old's and not adults. And sorry to all the 3 year old's out there did not mean to insult you. all of us that have common sense and respect for others keep pushing forward that's all we can do.

If you are a mechanic or technician your job title is that. You make money by working on numerous cars. If you are a business owner you make money running businesses. You are a business man. You should have multiple businesses to generate the revenue desired. You do not squeeze one building with employees in it for every penny you can ring from it to reach your desired compensation.
The hypocrisy is imbedded in the mentality that its ok for an owner to be a thieving crook counting every cup of washer fluid for profit meanwhile saying its ok to devalue your professionalism and steal hours from your pay.
Try hiring a lawyer. Its a law firm not a law business. If you could turn lawyers into employees shifty businessmen would start businesses selling lawyers time for cheap and taking all the profits.

Rants are good especially when you illuminate the ice cold harsh reality facts. Good techs are difficult to find but good repair shop owners seem to be even more rare.
