I have a 2023 Outback Touring XT. I had a 2012 Legacy Limited with the great 3.6 liter boxer 6. Great smooth fast and comfortable sedan. Looked new - only 12k miles - one of the Subaru mechanics saw me bring it in and took me aside to offer me 4K over blue book - he loved that particular year w the full grey leather and dark blue paint. Looked like new. Always hand washed. The 3.6 pulled a ton of low end torque and was smooth and fast with a real 5 speed automatic. Frankly I turned him down. I gave it to my son for gradation at MIT. He’s loving it and treating it right in Cambridge as he works on his PhD. I’m loving the Outback with the turbo and am anxious to see the 2026 Outback. My daughter is graduating from CalTech next year and there’s a Subaru in her future!

Being a former 2007 Impreza owner, I wanted Subaru to be different and bold. They had the recipe sitting right there, but safe and unimaginative is the way they went. Ie, the boxer style gave them the advantage of amazing center gravity during tight turns. The AWD speaks for itself. Its built like a tank, most Emergency responders knew what they faced arriving to a wreck based on the vehicle involved. Subaru had all this and so much more going for them, and rather than swing for the fence, they bunted to third base. The result, many of us left the brand and here we are.... Fire those execs, hire bold folks wanting to give it that umph..

Love my 2018 Legacy Limited and a few quirks will not sway my devotion to this terrific car.
One quirk is having to hold down the volume button to actually turn off the radio. Maybe that got changed?
The other was the many times I wanted a power trunk complete with the Karate Kid Sweep the leg open & close feature.
Nice ride quality and I surprise and delight any rear passengers with all the room that's back there.
Add in the safety features and it's a real shame more people are not aware of just how great it truly can be.
Thanks Joe & Lori for giving a fine eulogy to a car with an under appreciated Legacy!

I had a 2020 Legacy XT turbo, the first year for this style. It drove well, had a nice interior, was solidly built, and was a good value. Its secondary purpose seemed to be to annoy me with tremendously buggy electronics. The lane centering was awful and I had to fight it from tugging to the right. Was lucky to dump it when used car prices took off.

It was a worthy competitor to the Camry and the Accord. Probably not selling enough these days. The crossover craze apparently still going strong. They will allocate their dollars on the Forester, Ascent and Crosstrek. Additionally always good insights and appropriate zonks. Completely agree, they should have used the aluminized satin trim over the old-school chrome on the door handle insets. The 2-tone high quality interior in that Touring trim is pretty sweet.

I love my '17 Legacy - best car I've ever owned (and I've owned a lot!) What sold me on it was the handling - better than the Accord, Camry, Passat, Fusion, and Malibu of that time (the only car that matched its handling was the Mazda 6, but it lacked interior space). I had a 2021 Legacy Touring XT in a blue with tan Nappa leather interior. It was a nice looking car and those seats were so comfy and smelled so good. That said, by the first oil change it had an oil pan leak that had it in the dealership for two weeks until the gasket kit could come in. Common problem with the 2.4 turbo I found out. Also, it had rattles and buzzes all over the interior. The dealer could hear them, fixed four of them in the dash, two doors and air conditioner vents. They never could fix the rattle in the sunroof. The worst thing was the driveability. That 260 HP turbo should have never been paired with a CVT. Unless I really feather footed the throttle it surged, jerked and hesitated. The dealer told me it is what it is, there were no software updates to fix it. A friend drove it and he noticed it immediately. It wasn't just me. Plus the Driver Focus system couldn't be disabled permanently. I don't like all the false alerts it gave telling me to keep my eyes on the road even when I was. I think it was my glasses keeping the camera from seeing my eyes in certain light. Regardless, it was the most frustrating car I've owned. Great sound system, great looking interior, so comfortable, great highway cruiser, but a pain to drive in town. City MPG was always five less than the EPA estimate. I got rid of it last winter. Didn't trust it for the long haul.

I always thought it was a better alternative to the Impreza, and if they only would put the EJ 22 turbo and then it would’ve been the tuners paradise I’ve had two WRX, which I loved I was always disappointed that they wouldn’t take care of the legacy. I think it’s a little bit too late though my mature side actually went with the Camry SE and I love it and it’s pretty quick for what it is a hybrid and I won’t have to worry about any liability issues.

I've sold and driven many a Legacy over the years. It is the least appreciated, most underrated, unrecognized sporty sedan in the market. This is a great driving car. Period. Every test drive l ever did in a Legacy had ended with something like, "Wow, that was an unexpectedly GOOD driver for a Family Sedan!" This should be a long termer with care and proper maintenance. I would have no qualms whatsoever buying this car for a "long termer".

I wouldn't call it sporty on their later generations, but they are exceptionally great long distance cruisers. I had a 2007, 2011, 2016 and 2019. I think the 2019 was the best rendition behind the 2007

A great review of a good car. I own a 2021. Its sad that they are killing off such a good car. The style looks nice and clean. One can only hope that Subaru will bring it back someday.

Just got this car. Exact same color and interior. I wanted a sedan and didn't like any of the others, and didnt want to pay 50-60k for a lower tier model of the higher end sedans. All wheel drive is great, turn radius is nice and tight, outstanding comfortable ride, great visibility, solid power if you're up in the higher speeds but from a complete stop it has lag and the torque doesn't kick in til 2k rpms. But it's not really that type of car. If you're on the highway and need to make moves, it will MOVE. Safety features can be annoying but i dont mind them at all. In fact, it's useful if you want to drive home tired or drunk. The infotainment gets a lot of hate but i mean what you really need out of it? Great car tho, i highly recommend.

the base NA engine is just fine unless you really like to drive fast and gets better mpg. you can get the limited (not XT) trim which has all the goodies with the base engine for thousands less. Buy hey it's your money.

Good luck, finding one and they need to put the scoop back on the hood on those. I’m remember when that generation first came out. I was so disappointed.

Its weird they have real buttons for the climate control temperature considering that with climate control the whole point is to set it and let it do its thing. I dont think I ever changed it when I had CC except for the first few days of ownership.

No standard remote start on an almost $40k car (its available to be installed by Subaru but adds a 2nd separate remote) and the CVT is awkward with the turbo engine. The CVT does not match up well and dulls the performance. Its a shame Subaru is killing off the Legacy. I really like it. I test drove a Legacy Sport with the turbo and the XT model. The remote start omission is odd, but that CVT holds this car back from being really really good
*Joe, the wheels are the same size on the Sport and XT. Both use 18” wheels. The Sport does get Si drive while the XT does not

A "plethora" of pockets for your pocket stuffing pleasure. Some makes only give you ONE pocket and Subie gives you six. I think this car is a bargain for what you get. Great review as always, Joe. Now you have a pocket for your rocket.

In spite of CR pushing this car for years, Subaru couldn't get much excitement about it. They never marketed it since Subaru doesn't push anything that isn't "outdoors" lifestyle. They could have marketed more as a WRX/STI style GT model with a sport suspension, the turbo, and a more aggressive options, but Subaru has given up on sport cars; they have a tunnel vision with only "outdoorsy" car line.

I had a Legacy and a Camry. The Camry had better engine power and quieter drive. It felt like a much more expensive car. The Legacy was cheap around the edges but solid. In the end, I think Camry wins simply because they have a much much larger dealer network and not because it's a much better car.

I have a 2022 Limited XT. Smooth is the operative word. It rides great and is very comfortable on trips with great room for passengers too. The engine has plenty of power and is quiet too. The CVT isn't bad though at full throttle I wish it wouldn't fake shift as you feel the power stop a bit while it pretends. It might add 0.5 seconds to 60 because of it. Let the CVT be a CVT! Otherwise, it's a great car that deserved better attention from Subaru to make it stand out. While it's still my choice over the Camry and Accord because of the overall package, but it could use some spicing up (a new Legacy Spec B performance model anyone?) and some boldness in the styling. It's a shame that good sedans are getting the axe these days. Subaru needs to bring on a new BRAT to compete with the Santa Cruz. That would at least be something interesting for them to do and drop the Solterra (such a lifeless bland Toyota...like all Toyotas).
