Probably the most ubiquitous and well-liked Christmas song in the UK and Ireland. I can listen to it a thousand times and not get bored of it, it just embodies Christmas for me and many others. It reminds me of my childhood, always hearing it around Christmas time. Any time I hear it, even now, it makes me think of driving around with my family and looking at all the lights and hearing it come on the radio. A simpler time. A happier time. R.I.P. to both Shane and Kirsty, both tragically taken too young.
I am from italy and believe me...this is my generation's xmas song. I was born in the 80's you see, so... cranberries, pogues, sinead... so thanks you irish peoples, thanks u a lot. Thank you for bringin us so wonderful music. And of course... forgive my terribile english.

Fair enough. Ireland and UK Christmas song. The Pogues were a London Irish punk outfit. Kirsty MacColl was the biz, (not Irish) sadly lost too soon.(RIP).
We had a wave of Irish music in Sweden when The Pogues first started a weird mix of punks and old folksong leftists who went to concerts. I can't hear this one without going back to that time. Not pubs, but trashed out living rooms. Toy Dolls, Ramones, random Swedish stuff and then suddenly this one causing a mix of melancholy, joy, screaming the lyrics and giving hugs.
We sadly lost Shane just before Christmas last year and Kirsty McColl in 2000. Its an amazing song that gets played every Christmas here in the UK. You'll love 'Irish Rover' by these guys
Some more songs by the Pogues: 1. "Dirty Old Town" 2. "A Pair of Brown Eyes" 3. "Sally MacLennane" 4. "Streams of Whiskey" 5. "If I Should Fall from Grace with God" 6. "The Body of an American" 7. "Rain Street" 8. "Fiesta" 9. "Summer in Siam" 10. "Turkish Song of the Damned"
Adding another vote to react to Kirsty MacColl, one of the finest singer songwriters of her time. She's been gone 23 years now, and was on the verge of breaking through after years of ups and downs as a singer. She was so well known and utilized in the British music industry, be it her songs or her vocals backing other artists. She hadn't become well known in America, yet was about to tour a brilliant new album that I think would have really caught on here. Then she was gone, by the tragic negligence of another party. She wrote some of the most clever, sometimes funny yet extremely poignant lyrics you will ever here. Definitely worth giving her work a try.
I'm blown away you guys are reacting to this!! This song has always had a special place in my heart around the holidays! Very sad news of MacGowan's recent passing. May he RIP. I was also a fan of Kirsty MacColl who passed away many years before. "Walking Down Madison" is a really groovy tune of hers that I still enjoy to this day.
RIP Shane and, of course, Kirsty (gone way too soon and whose family has still not seen proper justice). For anyone who hasn't yet check out Shane's service, it has some really quality renditions of some classics including, naturally, this one. It's lovely. Thanks for the reaction guys!
A song that almost didn’t happen, the record company wanted to release it in time for Christmas which meant it had to be finished by a certain date, but Shane and the band had listened to a dozen or more female session singers, and had rejected them all. With very little time left they were on the brink of abandoning the whole thing when the producer persuaded them to hold off over the weekend. The producer was Kirsty’s then boyfriend and he recorded her in their garage studio. Played it to Shane on the following Monday, and the rest is history. Kirsty was a painfully insecure artist in her own right, but you really should check out her solo stuff, in particular her biggest hit, There’s A Guy Works Down The Chip Shop Swears He’s Elvis, which sounds like it should be a novelty record, but actually has very meaningful lyrics which I’m sure Amber would appreciate.
And of course theres her hit 'In these shoes?' She had such a sense of humour, you can find it in many of her songs, but the one that always makes me laugh is 'Here comes that man again.'
They're not checking out anything else from kirsty or Shane and it's pretty clear why. Shane just passed and all of a sudden lots are reacting to his biggest song...
I was lucky enough to see the Pogues in 1986 when I was just 15 years old. Saw them again in '91 at an Irish music festival called Feile, and were joined onstage by Kirsty McColl and they performed this song. Absolutely unforgettable experience. The ultimate Christmas song. Rest in power Shane and Kirsty.
The Pogues are an awesome band with their Irish roots, superb lyrics, and great instrumentals. Fairytale of New York is the most played Christmas song in the UK.
You should youtube "Shane McGowen's funeral fairytale of New York". They had a band playing this in the church, and his family and friends were literally dancing and singing in the aisles. The entire country of Ireland celebrated his life and music that day. The streets and pubs were packed, everyone had a drink in their hands and sang Pogues songs until the wee hours. ❤
Irish punk/folk music. Song came out in 1987. Shane was born to irish parents in Britain. Shane loved ireland. It's not Christmas until i hear Fairytale of New York.
Song gives me chills every time. The goddamn brilliance of everything about it. Raw. Beautiful. Melodic. Adult. And touching all at once. Just a bloody-hell masterpiece of a song.
I saw the pogues twice in concert and they were brilliant. Even though Wembley stadium was packed it still felt like a drunken sing song with Ur mates in your back garden ! The atmosphere was Fantastic . ❤️
I’m sure there aren’t many people in GB that don’t know this word for word and haven’t sung along with their mates it’s just everything ❤ in fact I’m laid in bed singing along right now
The melancholy the Pogues lay down brings me to tears at the most unexpected times. A beautiful song every time I listen no matter the mindset each time.
I want to post the link to the performance at his funeral, but posts containing links get removed or deleted. Anyway, the video was so amazing and wonderful to see, especially when his family members climbed over the 1st pew & started dancing with each other. I also heard that he left a $10k for the bar tab at his own funeral.
The NYPD have never had a choir but about a month before Shane passed away they got a group of retired officers together with an amateur choir and recorded a rendition of Galway Bay, it is really sweet.
The greatest Xmas song ever, when Kirsty sing “well so could anyone” it’s spine chilling, such a fantastic song. You must do Kirsty McCalls New England it’s a classic in Britain
For more Pogues listen to my personal favorite, Dirty Old Town. It was written by Ewan MacColl, the father of Kirsty MacColl who sang the duet with Shane in Fairytale.
Poor Kirsty. Whoever would have thought Shane would outlive her. Her voice is so sharp and brutal on the line “well so could anyone”. The 24th anniversary of her death this week.
It's high time to finally do the Corrs. Some may say Breathless but not me. I say the Irish instrumentals, Toss the Feathers, Haste to the Wedding, or Joy of Life. For singing songs: I Never Loved You Anyway, So Young, Forgiven Not Forgotten, Somebody For Someone. And their unplugged version of Little Wing is utterly fantastic. Their cover of Ruby Tuesday (with Ron Wood) or Summer Wine (with Bono).
I grew up in an Irish-Dominican neighborhood so this song has been in my rotation for years upon years. This is the first time, though, that is really made me cry as both leads are now gone. Great Christmas song, great reaction!!! You really should check out the version of this played in the church at Shane McGowan's funeral service, it is amazing and you'll love it I'm sure (they even kept in all the non pc lyrics). A great tribute to a legendary singer. More Pogues please!!!
Yes, a brilliant tribute at the funeral. When you see couples dancing at the end, reminiscent of Shane and Kirsty in the original video, if that doesn't bring tears to the eyes then one has no soul.
As an Aussie living in London I got to see The Pogues on New Years with thousands of wonderful, dancing Irish. We formed huge circles and ran round and round to Dirty Old Town all the while sharing spliffs and whisky. A beautiful dream with a nightmare hangover. Thanks a million Shane and Kirsty. Forever souls.
It has actually never been no.1 in the UK, reaching No. 2 a couple of times, but it does make the top 10 every Christmas, and it would be nice if it got the top spot one day. It was also voted Britain's favourite Christmas song about 16 years ago.
@@brendanfromireland because it's a tragic song around Christmas people never vote it as number one but in our hearts it definitely is #1. That's why they always play things like Slade and Wizard, because they're so upbeat.
I heard this song every Christmas growing up, as my Irish and Scottish grandparents always played it. It came out in the 80's, but it's still one of the most popular Christmas songs in the UK, and I just adore it. Because obviously it's a great song, but mostly because of the nostalgia, it reminds me of my grandparents. 😢❤
"THOUSANDS ARE SAILING" by the Pogues is every bit this great song's equal. A story of the immigrants that come to America... and,, like "FAIRY TALE OF NEW YORK," it never fails to bring a tear to my eye. A truly BEAUTIFUL song.
Two amazing voices for an amazing song with a lot of feelings, melancholy and joy in the same song and this is so irish. This song was played during Shane Mac Gowan funerals, giving joy to people despite sad circumstances...
Thank you so much for finally playing my favourite Christmas tune. Sadly now both vocalists, Shane & Kirsty are no longer with us and ironically lost around the Christmas period. This song still brings a tear to my eye.
Shane RIP one year on this Saturday, Kirsty gone i don't how long, my wife 7 years one week ago.. A song that used to make smile, now makes me cry every time.
Gut wrenching song, that last verse, you took my dreams from me……I kept them with me babe……. He was a poet Shane, had a way with words. It never fails to bring a tear to the eyes.
Kirsty McColl died too young , her dad was folk singer Ewan McColl he wrote The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face which was a big hit for Roberta Flack [ featured in Clint Eastwoods film Play Misty For Me] and Dirty Old Town , Shane and Kirsty will be remembered as Fairy Tale gets lots of radio plays at Xmas here in U.K. .
One of my favorite lines: "I could have been someone, well so could anyone..." It captures the whole despair and disgust they both feel. Shane's trying to blame her and their relationship out of spite and hatred and Kristy's response is basically, "Yeah, anyone could be something, you just don't have what it takes, quit blaming me you loser." The juxtaposition of how it started and where it ended all in 3+ minutes. Perfection.
One of my favourite Christmas songs 🎄💕The instruments you wanted to know about are the accordion and the tin whistle. They are very typically of the instruments you’ll hear being played here in Ireland especially in the pubs ☘️🪗🎼
My favourite Christmas song of all. So good, you could listen to it all year. It’s fantastic on a night out and gets everyone singing along. Can’t believe both Kirsty and Shane are gone. What an amazing collaboration this was.
They were called the Pogues because they couldn't call themselves póg mo thóin, which is Irish gaelic for "kiss my arse". They played this at Shane's funeral just last month, definitely worth a watch - there was actual dancing in the aisles. RIP Shane, and RIP Kirsty, two absolute stars.
A fantastic song, and the way they sing it,gives me goosebumps...have lived in UK for 23 years now,but when I lived in my native Sweden, this was always one of the most played tunes, around Christmas. Hats off,Kirsty and Shane🇸🇪🇬🇧
I knew an alcoholic couple 20 years ago and this song reminds me of them (Ray and Jan). They'd start sober-ish at 7pm and end up slagging each other off by midnight. He was very bright but alcoholic and she was devoted to him but also alcoholic. Occasionally she'd come in with a black eye which was a harsh reality at first but then I learned that life is complex. I enjoyed talking and being with them but haven't seen them in well over a decade. He is dead now, drowned in the canal - going for a piss whilst drunk I presume. Don't know what happened to her but I expect she's much better off without him. This song replays my time with them in the early 2000s, both were great and could have been so much more but wasted it with each other.
It's the Irish. We've got all the best bands!!!All the best tunes!! I am 81 and dancing. This is one of my favourite songs...performances of all. It has never failed to move my soul!
This song is a lovely tribute to the Irish in New York; so many Irish came from Ireland to Ellis Island to settle in New York, many filled the ranks of the police and continue to this day. Such a lovely connection from Ireland to the U.S.
Delighted ye did this song. Rainy Night in Soho, pair of brown eyes and PLEASE have a go at Thousands Are Sailing. Crackin tunes. Unbelievable lyrics. Amazing band.
The beginning of the song is just so depressing but then it lights up when Kirsty comes in. Every Christmas is groundhog day because this song is everywhere, on every radio station, every day, every year. RIP to both of them.
I saw the pogues a few times and they were always good. So many you could check out , streams of whiskey, Sally Maclennane, if I should fall from grace with god etc etc
Yes Squad! More Pogues please, amazing band, always reminds me of my olds after the pub parties, give Fiesta, Sally MacLennane, and a Rainy Night in Soho a play. Shane was an incredible poet, may he rest well x
Glad you’ve found the Pogues. For St. Patrick’s Day, check out “Thousands Are Sailing.” Any time, listen to “Body of an American,” “If I Should Fall From Grace With God,” “Broad, Majestic Shannon,” or their covers of “Dirty Old Town” or “And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda.” As for Kirsty MacColl, what could be a better Female Friday song than “In These Shoes”?
If you're looking for a contrast in voices, Shane and Sinead O'Conner did a duet called Haunted. Her voice was angelic against his sandpaper vocals and it couldn't have been more perfect.
I just mentioned Haunted in a comment before seeing yours. I didn’t realize it was a remake. I will definitely check out the original. I first heard it in The Matchmaker which is one of my favorite movies. So much good music in it.
@@nycdawn5061 The original was recorded with the Pogues bass player of the time, Cait O’Riordan on vocals. It was not a duet like the re-recorded version. It was a more jangly, indie style version. They recorded it for the soundtrack of “Sid and Nancy”.
Please do more Kirsty MacColl! She was such a talented singer/songwriter, cruelly killed just over 20 years ago now. In These Shoes, A New England, Walking Down Maddison, Don’t Come The Cowboy With Me Sonny Jim & her cover of The Kinks song, Days to get you started. She was the daughter of Ewan MacColl, a folk singer famous for his song The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face

So glad you've found this one. There are some wonderful Kirsty Maccoll songs to listen to - A New England, Don't Come The Cowboy With Me, and her gorgeous Kinks cover, Days among many others.
"...you took my dreams from me, when I first found you.." "I kept them with me babe, I kept them with my own! Can't make it out alone, I've built my dream around you...." Hits me in the feels every time!! Hard!
Was it the middle of the 80’s? Went into a record shop in Chico, California-going to college there- and stopped dead in my tracks, never heard crazy punk Irish rock-anything like it, not this mixture-before. Blew me away! Rum, Sodomy and the Lash, by the Pogues-produced by Elvis Costello-was playing , killing it. Immediate fan, thank you forever Shane, and all…
This is the only Christmas song I can stomach. Growing up in Scotland, I heard this song a lot when I was younger, and continued to listen to it and add it to playlists into my adult life. RIP Shane and Kirsty. You both left behind a song that will take some beating. Thanks for the reaction guys.
My birthday is Xmas eve born London 1990. This song brings back so many happy memories for me. This is played on every radio station in the UK in December

Indeed, Kirsty was not a member of the Pogues, she was an English singer-songwriter.
It was a perfect tribute
As an Aussie living in London I got to see The Pogues on New Years with thousands of wonderful, dancing Irish. We formed huge circles and ran round and round to Dirty Old Town all the while sharing spliffs and whisky. A beautiful dream with a nightmare hangover. Thanks a million Shane and Kirsty. Forever souls.
It's the number one Christmas song every year. In the UK and in Ireland, I. I think it's the only thing we can agree on.
It has actually never been no.1 in the UK, reaching No. 2 a couple of times, but it does make the top 10 every Christmas, and it would be nice if it got the top spot one day. It was also voted Britain's favourite Christmas song about 16 years ago.
@@davidhuggan6315 even though going by sales/streams and radio plays it isn't.. .quite
It's never been number one in the UK unfortunately
I think it's the most loved - Scotland, Ireland, & England & Wales!
@@brendanfromireland because it's a tragic song around Christmas people never vote it as number one but in our hearts it definitely is #1. That's why they always play things like Slade and Wizard, because they're so upbeat.
Brings a tear everytime I hear it. And I've heard it 1000 times.
A truly BEAUTIFUL song.
the one song I need to hear for it to be Christmas
The ONLY good christmas song.
Heard it on the radio yesterday, Christmas has officially started
Thousands are sailing is another classic for me but there is a lot to choose from.
"Thousands are Sailing" is probably my favourite Pogues song. RIP Philip Chevron, who wrote it.
This is absolutely the next one they should do.
Makes me bawl my eyes out, that song.
Channel those memories into a smile! Wonderful music has powers like that!
Gut wrenching song, that last verse, you took my dreams from me……I kept them with me babe……. He was a poet Shane, had a way with words. It never fails to bring a tear to the eyes.
The only Christmas song I'll put on repeat during the season. It's my absolute favorite song in the deep winter!
Kirsty McColl died too young , her dad was folk singer Ewan McColl he wrote The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face which was a big hit for Roberta Flack [ featured in Clint Eastwoods film Play Misty For Me] and Dirty Old Town , Shane and Kirsty will be remembered as Fairy Tale gets lots of radio plays at Xmas here in U.K. .
An amazing song by two incredible singers whose lives were both cut short. One by an accident, the other by the drink. Godspeed ❤
Perfection.
A tear-jerking song.
It's not Christmas till you hear this. Love it. Sadly both now passed.
my favourite christmas song, it just embodies so much love between people from england, ireland and scotland
Diesen song kann man immer und immer wieder hören! Bester Christmas song...
This is the #1 Christmas song in the UK and Ireland every year, and I love it here in the US too.
A fantastic song, and the way they sing it,gives me goosebumps...have lived in UK for 23 years now,but when I lived in my native Sweden, this was always one of the most played tunes, around Christmas. Hats off,Kirsty and Shane🇸🇪🇬🇧
RIP Kirsty and Shane.😢🏴🇬🇧🇨🇮
The Greatest Christmas song ever written. So thankful I have a British father. RIP Shane MacGowan and Kirsty MacColl
It's the Irish. We've got all the best bands!!!All the best tunes!! I am 81 and dancing. This is one of my favourite songs...performances of all. It has never failed to move my soul!
Shane McGowan...RIP....such a fun song!
Somebody finally got to the pogues. 🤗🤗🤗
In my top ten Christmas songs - - this is so beautiful when you really listen to it.
Great list...
The Pogues were such a great band, and Shane McGowan was an amazing leader of this band. I bought all of their albums. Definitely hear more from them.
If you're looking for a contrast in voices, Shane and Sinead O'Conner did a duet called Haunted. Her voice was angelic against his sandpaper vocals and it couldn't have been more perfect.
The original version with Cait O’Riordan is my favourite version of “Haunted”.
So glad you did this. A lifelong favorite of mine.
Fun fact - The Pogues got their name from an Irish phrase Póg mo hón. Pronounced Pogue Muh hone which means Kiss My A**. True story 😝
what is the actual meaning in English, or pogues is just a name
@@saadasfaq5552read above
It’s a tin whistle. Sounds like morning birds. Giving out sweet sweet melodies. Love your stuff
Kirsty McColl is well worth exploring - she wrote the Tracy Ullman track you reacted to
And sang the line “Ba-by” in Ullman’s version
Pogues - Thousands Are Sailing simply the best. I loved this band in College.
Not forgetting - There's a Guy Works Down The Chip Shop Swears He's Elvis 😁
It's on my work Playlist all year long. I never get tired of it.
Great reaction guys. 👍
Another superb Irish band are The Dubliners, you should see their duet with The Pogues (live on an Irish chat show). This performance is now legendary. It’s called “The Irish Rover”, and it’s a real must-see.
Thanks 🙏🏻 From Belfast, Northern Ireland.
So glad you've found this one. There are some wonderful Kirsty Maccoll songs to listen to - A New England, Don't Come The Cowboy With Me, and her gorgeous Kinks cover, Days among many others.
My brothers favourite Christmas song ❤ Every time I hear it it stops me in my tracks and makes me smile. 🇬🇧 xxx
My favorite Christmas song. Punky Irish folk! Sad and uplifting at the same time.
"...you took my dreams from me, when I first found you.."
"I kept them with me babe, I kept them with my own! Can't make it out alone, I've built my dream around you...."
Hits me in the feels every time!!
YAY!!! FINALLY!!! So glad y'all picked this! HUGE Pogues fan here. I hit the "LIKE" button as soon as I saw the title. This is my ultimate Xmas song (& one of the ultimate love songs, imho). I would also suggest y'all check out their songs "If I Should Fall from Grace With God", "A Rainy Night in Soho", "Streams of Whiskey" , "Love You Till The End" & their versions of "The Parting Glass" & "The Irish Rover". RIP Shane & Kirsty.
Side Note: Spider Stacy, one of the Pogues has a home in New Orleans & often performs there with the Cajun band Lost Bayou Ramblers doing a show called "Poguetry in Motion".
You know xmas is due when the fairytale is on the radio 😊
Hi Jay and Amber, Believe it or not this song is actually my ringtone on my phone 😄😄
Shane McGowan was the lead singer with The Pogues He very sadly passed away last month sged 65 🙏🙏
The female singer is Kirsty McColl, who has also sadly passed away 🙏🙏
RIP Shane McGowan 🙏🙏
RIP Kirsty McColl 🙏🙏
Well, 65 for McGowan would be like 105 for anybody else to be fair
how did he last that long?!
Knowing when to stop I would guess@@keithwarrington2430
Finally got his teeth fixed and then died.
