He was on his way out when he performed this song. I saw an interview with Monserrat where she told of how Freddie told her he was not much longer for this world. Of course he is eternal.
Rock star Freddie Mercury had a dream: to hear his idol Luciano Pavarotti singing. In 1983 he went to London’s Royal Opera House, where he experienced the power of Monserrat Caballé’s voice for the first time in Verdi’s opera Un ballo in maschera. As Mercury would later recall, he sat still while the opera diva’s incomparable bel canto sounded. The rock musician’s biographers would later point out that it was from that time on that he listened to only one music - the incomparable Montserrat Caballe. The rocker to the end of his days considered the native of Barcelona, the best performer of all time. In an interview with Spanish television on July 31, 1986 he made no secret of his dream - to sing a duet with Caballe. This rumor reached the opera diva and interested her. They met for the first time at the Ritz Hotel in Barcelona to discuss preparations for the 1992 Olympics. The rock musician and the opera singer had to write a song for the opening of the big event. They instantly felt a deep respect for each other and their hearts beat in unison. Each of them would later describe the encounter as fateful. It seemed to them as if they had known each other for a thousand years. This meeting was the beginning of their sincere friendship. Monserrat Caballe recalled: “Freddie turned to me and said: I have a present for you, a song called Exercises In Free Love. Would you be so kind as to perform it when you have time, anywhere, even in the bathroom? The song sounded pianissimo and very, very melodic. And I took the score he handed me to perform it in the future.” When the opera diva asked Freddie Mercury for a special gift, a song about her hometown, it was already the famous “Barcelona,” the future anthem of the Olympics. They met repeatedly at the rock star’s apartment and talked until morning. For the sake of these gatherings Monserrat neglected her sleep schedule. She was the first person who Freddie Mercury trusted and told about his incurable illness - AIDS. On October 8, 1988, they sang at La Nit Festival, held on the occasion of the passing of the Olympic torch. Three compositions - among them “Barcelona” - were included in their joint album. Unfortunately, due to the passing of the legendary Freddie Mercury, the friends were never lucky enough to perform the anthem at the opening of the ’92 Olympics. “It’s impossible to replace Freddie with anyone!” - Monserrat told the organizers. The song was played on the recording.
I don't know if you two wonderful souls fully appreciate the importance of what you do here. You are keeping these wonderful artists alive and bringing them to new generations. It fills me with joy to hear younger people appreciate them as much as I did. Love from the UK
oh my god! this song was made for the olimpic games in 1992 in Barcelona. I'm from Barcelona. I lived that in first person when i was 19 years old. I swear, everytime i listen this pair of singers ( gods of music), i go emotional and cry...wow!. I'm proud to bo from Barcelona, Catalonia.
Freddie did Freddie, uncompromised and authentically. Montserrat did Montserrat uncompromised and authentically, and somehow, something that shouldn't have worked absolutely did. This can only be attributed to Freddie's work as a composer and the level of virtuosity they both had in their respected fields.
Absolutely great reaction guys. EVERY TIME I hear this song, see this video it’s like the very first time. It never gets old. Such an amazing masterpiece. Their voices together are like a choir of Angels. Unfortunately, that’s who they’re both singing with now, the Angels. But what they left us will remain through out infinity. 🖤🎶🖤
A song that was released around the same time that is pretty incredible and one of my all-time favorite Queen songs is Who Wants to Live Forever. Very theatrical and stunningly beautiful and haunting. And Brian May sings in the beginning of it. I highly recommend it.
It is one of the most beautiful haunting sad songs I have ever heard. Every time I hear it I immediately remember where it is played in the movie HIGHLANDER in regards to Connor McClouds BONNY HEATHER. I BLOSSOM.
I have wanted so badly for them to react to “Who Wants to Live Forever”. It gives me chills and is so strong knowing that Freddie was already along the path to his imminent death.
There are two versions of this song depending which video you watch. One where Brian sings at the start and one where Freddie sings the start. Surprisingly the Brian May intro is better.
I'm not sure what summarizes this performance better; the look on Amber's face at the end, or her saying, "I can't believe that this exists." This was something truly special!
Montserrat Caballé was an outstanding opera artist. Unfortunately the majority of people, who are not into opera, only know her by this performance. But if you are in the slightest interested in opera you should check out other performances of her. Freddie and her got along very, very well. I would say they became friends. A great duo. Love Freddie, love Monti
So so glad you guys reacted to this and loved it! I was a Queen fan in High School and our Spanish teacher played this for us. I was obsessed with it! She only had a bad copy on tape, and couldn’t find it for sale anywhere! This was 1988. No MP3’s, no internet, no cd burners! I had a friend who went on the school trip to Barcelona. I gave him $20 and told him he had to come home with it on CD for me. He came through and I wore that CD out! 😂❤️💿
Funny you should say this...I saw it live on the Closing Ceremony of the 1988 Olympics. I always recorded the Olympics, but back then it was on VCR. I saved my tapes and as I moved locations over the years my tapes somehow either got lost in the move, or ruined. I couldn't hear the song again until music venues started surfacing on the internet. I can't remember what it was called back in 2004(ish) but it wasn't RUclips back then. Now I can hear it on RUclips whenever I want. Thank God for RUclips! That VCR copy Was a bad copy...but I played it over and over again...until I couldn't find it anymore. You were fortunate to get a CD!
This song is on the soundtrack for the Olympic Games. I looked it up. This song is the first track on the album called Barcelona Gold. Which is a compilation album that was released to coincide with the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain.

It was actually written 4 years before then in 1988 by Freddie for Montserrat as a tribute to her hometown. Freddie died in 1991. It was then subsequently used for the Barcelona games in 92.
This performance was breathtaking. Freddie *loved* opera and wrote this for her. He treasured this performance. Your reaction was *so perfect* The looks on your faces are precisely how I feel every time I see this.
This song gives me goosebumps every.single.time! Their voices harmonize so beautifully! This is also one of the very few songs that he got to sing in his normal octive range
Freddy Mercury! NUFF' SAID!! What a singer, songwriter, performer. Miss him so much. Queen. What a band. I remember when people wouldn't listen to them with me. I was right, they were in my opinion way wrong..
This brings me to tears every time I hear it. The loss of Freddie stings when I hear this masterpiece. Can you imagine what we could have been blessed to hear and witness if he could have lived longer. This man was a gift to human kind and I miss him. 🥺❤
'Golden Boy' from them is also a winner lots of change ups and different musical styles if you liked this, you'll love that one and Yes, Monsi was a major talent & Star in her natuve country of Spain. RIP Freddie saw her perform and fell in love. They met, struck up a friendship and the rest is history.
This is quite literally, the perfect union of Opera and Rock, perfectly executed by two powerhouse artists.. 💯❤️ also, beautifully, if you look into their relationship, they developed a true and strong friendship and love for each other.

Never underestimate the power of opera - there’s a reason it endures. And never underestimate the dramatic showmanship of Freddie Mercury. Great reaction vid, y’all.
Thank you! Freddie wrote not only THIS song, but an entire album that they recorded together - he was in awe of her.. and never thought she would agree to work with him... one of my favorites by them is "How Can I go On?" -- I hope you do more reactions to their collaborations.. also, "The Golden Boy"... look forward to more!
Freddie could sing anything. He could sing the phone book and it would be amazing 😍😍😍. R.I.P. Freddie and Montserrat much love and respect to the both of you. You are missed.
I’m so thrilled you finally heard this! This, in a way, feels like Freddie’s farewell -his last great song before he leaves us and he’s flawless. Thank you so much for sharing.
So glad you've finally got back to reacting to Queen/ Freddie Mercury. Please do more!! Freddie and Montserrat did a whole album together. It was a dream come true for Freddie as he idolised her. They became great friends. Much love from England 🏴
Wonderful song, wonderfully sung and a wonderful reaction from you two! It's no coincidence that the line in this song is 'I had this perfect dream, this dream was me and you.' It was always a dream of Freddie Mercury to sing opera. When he met Montserrat Caballé and it became reality, it must have been a special feeling for him. The whole Barcelona album is great. I also recommend checking out Freddie Mercury's demo version "Exercises in Free Love" (only vocal sounds, no lyrics). A song not very well known but really worth a listen. For a next Queen song “The Show Must Go On” or from the film Highlander “Who Wants to Live Forever”.
I am so proud that I was one of the ones to recommend this. I believe I said it would blow Jay's mind. Mission accomplished. Now, with swelled head deflated, thank you so much. I was so excited to see that you were reacting to this.
This was incredible for sure. Their stage presence was fairly similar to another Freddie number I think you’d be equally blown away by, “Who Wants To Live Forever”.
They HAVE TO react to the full version though, the radio edit of WWTLF cuts off a very moving bit of music at the end and I really can't believe they cut it in a lot of versions.
You don't want to miss the other two videos of them on RUclips together! One is "The Golden Boy" and the other is "How Can I Go On". Both are outstanding and The Golden Boy showcases Freddie's low baritone as well as his higher tones in a mixture of genres in one song. Both are beautiful and really show their love and appreciation for each other's talents. The most astounding thing you will ever hear is a demo Freddie recorded and sent to Montserrat where he is singing HER PART in extremely high notes. It's called "Exercises in Free Love" and is here on RUclips. You would never believe it is Freddie Mercury's voice until the few times his voice dips to lower, more recognizable notes. It's simply amazing.
There is an interview with her where she talks about their unexpected friendship and how much it meant. Freddie was a huge fan of hers and being able to help create this as a gift to the people of Barcelona for the Olympics was something he cherished.
Freddie... listen to Queen all day every day...this song was completely different and I don't no anyone other than Freddie could make this a master peice
Your faces and the stunned silence at the end spoke volumes. This beautiful piece was an incredible crossover/collaboration breaking down all boundaries. Sad that these two amazing artists are no longer with us, but as the song says 'If God is willing we will meet again someday.'
I saw an interview with her many years later and she said the night she met Freddie that he played the piano for her and they stayed up all night talking and singing and they had such a great time she nearly forgot she had to catch a plane that morning.
This was a big collaboration for both of them - and a loyal loving friendship blossomed between both with mutual admiration and respect. Such a unique relationship and a great gift for Freddie to receive, a mission to pursue during his battle with Aids.
This video was new to me. Glorious, glorious, Glorious!! I can't think of any other pop artist who could have held his own with the likes of Diva Caballé!!! Bravo!
The story behind the song is nearly as magical as the song itself. But it is Freddie ❤Someone with a voice so iconic and yet he had this need to share his joy for music with the beautiful Montserrat Caballe. Like two worlds colliding ! But it worked so well. This song lifts you up, shows you the stars and then leaves you. Breathless ! Fantastic reaction !

And I took the score he handed me to perform it in the future.”
When the opera diva asked Freddie Mercury for a special gift, a song about her hometown, it was already the famous “Barcelona,” the future anthem of the Olympics.
:) Lovely. Thank you for writing this.
her brother was involved with the olympics and chose it for the olympic song Barcalona 92
but Freddie didn't write it for the olympics
I don't know if you two wonderful souls fully appreciate the importance of what you do here. You are keeping these wonderful artists alive and bringing them to new generations. It fills me with joy to hear younger people appreciate them as much as I did. Love from the UK
Two of the greatest singers combined...
Pushing the boundaries of Artistic expression 😍♥️♥️
R.I.P. in Infinity.........
oh my god! this song was made for the olimpic games in 1992 in Barcelona.
I BLOSSOM.
@@tinamarcum6170 The first time I saw that I was with my then-fiancé and I sobbed my butt off. lol
One of the biggest tear-jerkers ever!
Especially good when watching 'Highlander', the movie it is from......'Aye Blossom'.
I'm not sure what summarizes this performance better; the look on Amber's face at the end, or her saying, "I can't believe that this exists." This was something truly special!
Your faces at the end. Priceless!
Freddie adored her. They had a beautiful friendship. She was one of very few who knew the truth about his health. They have a few more songs. So good!
She is Montserrat Caballe one of the best opera singers of all time
So so glad you guys reacted to this and loved it!
Wow you should look at your faceexpressions!!! I've heard this song so many times and I think l've even asked you to react to it BUT to see it through your eyes was one of the best times ever!!🤗😘❤️
the Ecstasy on your faces, being taken with the music, Feeling It All.
Freddie Does It Again !! and Montserrat Caballe' is a Voice from Heaven, more than an angel. I'm so glad you both are So Blown Away by it. I LOVE this Album.
Barcelona is the appetizer, The Golden Boy the the full enchilada!!
They did a whole album together! This was written by Freddie for the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona.
It was actually written 4 years before then in 1988 by Freddie for Montserrat as a tribute to her hometown. Freddie died in 1991. It was then subsequently used for the Barcelona games in 92.

Which part?
You were correct.
This performance was breathtaking. Freddie *loved* opera and wrote this for her. He treasured this performance. Your reaction was *so perfect* The looks on your faces are precisely how I feel every time I see this.
I have goosebumps. OMGosh. I'd never seen this.... Amazing.
I love the way Amber leans so far forward, totally mesmerised. A great reaction to an epic performance.
This song gives me goosebumps every.single.time!
Their voices harmonize so beautifully!
This is also one of the very few songs that he got to sing in his normal octive range
You both look exhausted after that! This takes your breath away.
Freddy Mercury! NUFF' SAID!! What a singer, songwriter, performer. Miss him so much. Queen. What a band. I remember when people wouldn't listen to them with me. I was right, they were in my opinion way wrong..
Oh their listening now!
Why wouldn't people listen to Queen with you? I'm really interested in their reasons. IMHO one of the top 10 rock groups of all time.
This brings me to tears every time I hear it. The loss of Freddie stings when I hear this masterpiece. Can you imagine what we could have been blessed to hear and witness if he could have lived longer. This man was a gift to human kind and I miss him. 🥺❤
'Golden Boy' from them is also a winner
lots of change ups and different musical styles
if you liked this, you'll love that one
and Yes, Monsi was a major talent & Star in her natuve country of Spain. RIP
Freddie saw her perform and fell in love. They met, struck up a friendship and the rest is history.
The Golden Boy is my favorite Freddie song. Maybe my favorite song, period.
Yes please to The Golden Boy!!
This is quite literally, the perfect union of Opera and Rock, perfectly executed by two powerhouse artists.. 💯❤️ also, beautifully, if you look into their relationship, they developed a true and strong friendship and love for each other.
The entire Barcelona album is incredible.
Agreed, highly recommend.
Both of your faces at the end of this video were priceless. ❤
The song was first recorded in 1987, but it was re-released in 1992 as a kind of anthem for the Barcelona Olympics, a year after Freddie's death.
Freddie can Sing Opera too!! It is Extremely Beautiful. Freddie was too precious on our beautiful planet. God called him to teach the Angels 😇 to Sing.🎶 God Bless You Both. "Together until the End," you both have your wish. To be part of the audience was Breath-taking. We were Blessed to be there! ANGELIC both of you.🙏🎤🎶🎵❣️💕🕊
Freddie was so amazing. Wish he was still here. This was so good.
Never underestimate the power of opera - there’s a reason it endures. And never underestimate the dramatic showmanship of Freddie Mercury. Great reaction vid, y’all.
They did another great duet called How Can I Go On?. You, guys, gonna love it, believe me! ✌️
Love that song!
Yes. That’s my favorite
my crying song
Your faces! Always amazed whenever I hear this. He was so talented - what would we have seen if he’d survived?
I have watched your reaction to this video like over and over and it’s amazing
As soon as they started harmonizing together, I found myself just sitting here completely mezmerized.
Freddie is the greatest of all time
Freddie could sing anything. He could sing the phone book and it would be amazing 😍😍😍. R.I.P. Freddie and Montserrat much love and respect to the both of you. You are missed.
She was the ONLY PERSON that out staged Freddie!!!!!❤❤❤ she and Freddie stayed very close for the short time he lived after recording
So good, it pounds at the soul. And in a playful way, the two of them are a powerhouse act. Brings a tear to my eye.
They had great love and respect for each other and it showed.
Yeah, it is just “wow” ❤️
The ultimate entertainer with the ultimate opera singer
I’m so thrilled you finally heard this! This, in a way, feels like Freddie’s farewell -his last great song before he leaves us and he’s flawless. Thank you so much for sharing.
That was a JAW dropping experience. Just want to know how many fly's did y'all catch. I caught a few. Love your channel.
Their friendship was so heartwarming and glorious. Learn this story.
Freddie has to be the greatest male rock vocalist of all time - has to be. He's ridiculous.
So glad you've finally got back to reacting to Queen/ Freddie Mercury. Please do more!! Freddie and Montserrat did a whole album together. It was a dream come true for Freddie as he idolised her. They became great friends. Much love from England 🏴
One of the last gifts of Freddie to humanity, oh and what a gift it is!
Two Greatest singer's of all time.
One of my favorite opera songs is Montserrat Caballe singing O Mio Babbino Caro. If you like her voice you should definitely check that one out!
This is possibly my favourite reaction video of yours, because your reaction at the end is so wonderful. 10 seconds of being gobsmacked and then "wow"
I am so proud that I was one of the ones to recommend this. I believe I said it would blow Jay's mind. Mission accomplished. Now, with swelled head deflated, thank you so much. I was so excited to see that you were reacting to this.
You guys are great I like you appreciate good music when you here it keep up the good program. Thanks
This was incredible for sure. Their stage presence was fairly similar to another Freddie number I think you’d be equally blown away by, “Who Wants To Live Forever”.
he performed that fantastically but written by Brian
They HAVE TO react to the full version though, the radio edit of WWTLF cuts off a very moving bit of music at the end and I really can't believe they cut it in a lot of versions.
your faces said it all..awesome reaction! ❤
Freddie is so good that he can make me like opera music
This is a song that is pure magic regardless of which version you listen to.
Freddie was in total awe of this lady and her voice 😍
There is an interview with her where she talks about their unexpected friendship and how much it meant. Freddie was a huge fan of hers and being able to help create this as a gift to the people of Barcelona for the Olympics was something he cherished.
Freddie... listen to Queen all day every day...this song was completely different and I don't no anyone other than Freddie could make this a master peice
I am so happy that you guys covered this. It is probably one of my favorite collaborations of all time.
Freddie Mercury’s Exercises in Free Love is his foray into opera! A great one to hear.
Love the song and performances. Eyes start leaking each time. One of my favourite Feddie Mercury performances.
Thank you for listening to this song! This is such a wonderful song. Written by Freddy so he could sing it with her. Loved your reaction😊
This video was new to me. Glorious, glorious, Glorious!! I can't think of any other pop artist who could have held his own with the likes of Diva Caballé!!! Bravo!
Incredible!!!!!!!!!
Your reactions are so beautifully truthful.
Glad your next introduction to opera was Montserrat Caballé. She was the absolute best and Freddie absolutely idolized her. He wrote a full album for her (you should listen to it all), it´s all his composition. She was incredibly open minded and kept his memory alive until she passed away in 2018
