    My ex used to sing this song ALL THE TIME! He passed away after a long battle with cancer last year. He always had an upbeat attitude during his illness, so our son & I decided to have this as one of the songs played at his Celebration of Life (which was held in a friend's pub). Everyone started dancing & laughing - it was just how he would've wanted it, for everyone to smile & have fun when they thought of him.

      I always thought its UK Slang for "drinking all night" (which causes you to ...)

    • @edeledeledel5490
      @edeledeledel5490 4 месяца назад +4

      @@albundy7718 You are correct; in the UK, "Getting pissed" = "getting drunk" as in "pissed as a newt".
      "Getting pissed at" for "getting annoyed at" is a common US usage. Getting pissed at something is used in the UK, but less frequently.
      Pissing something away in the UK can mean wasting it, as in "He pissed all his wages away on Friday night" but that sort of thing has a strong connection with drink also.
      So "Pissing the night away" combines them both, wasting/passing time away by getting drunk.
      The clue is in the list of the variety of drinks consumed, one after the other, before singing maudlin and rousing songs, then having a fight with other drunks, hence "I get knocked down, but I get up again, you're never gonna keep me down" because he is pissed and feeling no pain.
      It used to be a common Friday night pastime in the more working-class parts of the the UK, the Friday night rumble, but less so nowadays, contrary to right-wing opinion.

    This group actually has a really wild and intersting story. They went from being a super-abraisive, dark, hard-edged punk band in the 80s anarchist scene to putting out house music in the 90s, then eventually releasing one of the all-time great bar singalongs. After that, they pivoted into acoustic folk music in the 2000s before finally splitting up in 2012. The whole time, their lyrics remained intensely political and left-wing.

    YES! I have been begging for this one! I knew you'd love it. Some more great 90s tunes you have got to check out: "Your Woman" by White Town, "Possum Kingdom" by Toadies, "Super BonBon" by Soul Coughing, "Got You Where I Want You" by the Flys, "We Like To Party" by Vengaboys, "The Impression That I Get" by Mighty Mighty Bosstones, "The Power" by Snap, "Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover" by Sophie B Hawkins, "Bitch" by Meredith Brooks, "Unbelievable" by EMF...and you have got to get back to Barenaked Ladies! And Nirvana! The 90s were so diverse and there were so many great bands who came and went...some who stayed, but lots like Chumbawamba who just popped in, gave us an earworm like this and then went on their merry way.

    Tubthumping is jumping into a slightly larger kiddie pool from the top of a straight staircase. The pool is usually full of shaving cream or thick bubbles. This usually takes place in a sorority-type situation. That's what it's called in England, as the band's from there. This was a HUGE song at college in the USA.

  • @samolevski1119
    @samolevski1119 8 месяцев назад +32

    This is another song which highlights the differences in British and American use of English words - here in the UK being/getting pissed means being/getting drunk (I think it's possibly being annoyed in the states ?), and being pissed off means annoyed.
    It's a song about drinking to oblivion which is sadly much too common here at weekends or in certain tourist destinations around Europe, and the woman's little bit about Danny Boy is a reference to the much loved Irish song of that name, which seems to be belteed out by drunks everywhere.
    Getting knocked down is of course a result of the pushing and fighting which comes with excessive alcohol, and being drunk they keep getting up again as an act of defiance, ready to fight and argue again.

    • @Charlee1776
      @Charlee1776 8 месяцев назад +4

      Being "pissed' can mean being drunk or being angry depending on the context it's used in here in the USA. And the way they used "pissing the night away" would typically mean you're just wasting time (chillin or w/e- no where to be and no cares kind of night). Hope that helps understand the weird US of A. 😄

It has the sort of optimistic toughness which was seen later, on 7/705 - when the London Underground was bombed, killing 56 people, and which we appear to be famous for, since at least WWII. Chumbawamba is Australian for Chewbacca.
    The song leads with the chorus.
    It repeats itself over and over.
    It is an anthem.
    The woman singing and the horns are perfect for this song.
    90 s classic!

    This is an Irish pub song. Music to get famously drunk by!

    I've always liked this song because of the first lyrics of the female singer. *beautifully sings* "Pissing the night away"
