"Once in a Lifetime" is a no-brainer. Easily one of their most influential songs. Actually, not one of THEIR most influential songs, but one of THE most influential songs. (And the video is pretty revolutionary, too.) Their song "Burnin' Down the House" came out when I was in college, and let me tell you, that one always got the party going full force. "Life During Wartime," despite its title, also always gets the party started. You've reacted to Al Green before...both he and Talking Heads do masterpiece work on "Take Me to the River." Very different vibes, but both masterful.
Stop Making Sense is one of the best concerts ever filmed. It starts with David Byrne walking onto the stage with a boombox and an acoustic guitar. He puts down the boombox, hits play for the backing track and plays Psycho Killer. As the concert progresses, more members of the (extended) band are rolled on with their instruments and the concert just gets better and better. It is a must-see.

Stop Making Sense is a must watch. fun fact, I saw U2 on The Joshua Tree tour 1988 in Croke Park Dublin, The Support acts where Christy Moore, The Pretenders and The Hothouse Flowers, but during band change overs Stop Making Sense was played over the PA in its entirety, the track list just continued to the next few songs during each change over. so in a way, Talking Heads where like a Fourth support band. super cool and I never saw another band do anything like since
agree: Arguably, with their previous Remain In Light album and tour, they were the best American rock band of the time. This remarkable film, two years later and tons of fun to watch, is a kind of summing up of a startling career. The film is a popular entry point to the band, sufficiently wonderful on it's own to satiate some, but intriguing enough to others to spur a richer dive back. Highly agree/recommended!
You opened another can of worms with the Talking Heads. Kinda like Bowie, David Byrne(singer) and Talking Heads changed their style so many times while also not changing their style. They were an awesome band. Psycho Killer is a good start but they have so many other great songs. My favorite is the entire live Stop Making Sense album. Those versions of their songs are my favorite. I listen to that album, front to back, at least once a month.
Also you said he sounds kinda "theatrical", David Byrne is very theatrical. And you can see it in the video version of Stop Making Sense. That's a must, you have to watch the entire Stop Making Sense concert!!! You will not regret it!!! And their other songs don't sound "creepy"(as you said). Sometimes dark and creepy lyrics but musically definitely not.
Hell,yeah my fav album as well, they have opened up the rabbit hole on this one, David Byrne is up their IMO with Midge Ure, Martin Fry, Peter Gabriel, Bryan Ferry, Phil Collins. etc all those guys and many more of that era, true creative artists, they were pioneers, I still remember going to the Movie Stop Making sense and seeing David running around as his pants grew bigger and bigger, it was brilliant.

Just as MTV started, a new style called "New Wave" had started. The TALKING HEADS, DEVO, and quite a few others in the early 80s defined this genre. It is a mix of 70s punk, taken hold of by the new synthesizers popping up at the time. Singing or acting slightly robotically was all the rage.
Talking Heads have always been labelled as post-punk, like Magazine, Siouxie and the Banshees, Pere Ubu, Chrome or Wire. Duran Duran, Human League, OMD is new wave. For me New Wave is more synths oriented, more pop and commercial.
The word New Wave was invented by Talking Head, agent , They used to play CBGB club who was kknow for Punk band, he was trying to promote the band and when some people where backing off when they heard punk, he said no , it's ot punk, it's a new wave ! to set them appart from the prejudice of the CBGB stigma, that radio and tv had back then.
This was Talking Heads' first big hit. They came out of the punk rock scene in New York the Mudd Club they are excellent musicians, David Byrne is also a musical genius. Check out Brian Eno and David Byrne's classic My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts
FYI: you should get and watch "Stop Making Sense" DVD, one of the best rock DVD's ever recorded. Anything off this is a killer to watch, try "Life During Wartime" or "Slippery People" they and the whole DVD are unbelievable.
You guys really stepped in this time. Talking Heads is one of the quirkiest bands ever, but they have soooooo many great tunes. "Burning Down the House", "And She Was", "Sugar on My Tongue", and "Take Me to the River" are classics, pretty much everyone is going to probably suggest "Once in a Lifetime". If you want to see just how weird they were, that's the video to see. There are also a number of videos of live performances that are also really fun.
I love the live version on "Stop Makings Sense" so much. 'Life During Wartime' is another absolute favorite, along with 'And She Was' and 'Nothing But Flowers'.
Also, the lyrics are different. Here the 2nd verse goes "I passed out hours ago", whereas the album version goes "You start a conversation you can't even finish". I hadn't heard this before, so I was surprised.
My favourite song of all time. When I was a little girl, women weren't really in rock bands. My first experience of watching Tina Weymouth with that giant bass blew my 4 year old socks off! She is the Queen of punk in my eyes She is iconic
They are considered new wave. It a sound in the 80’s which is a cross between punk and rock and pop and really falls into a category of its own. Like the B52’s and Devo and Ian Dury and the Blockheads. So much fun

These guys are hard to classify, but you can accurately say, "Alternative Rock" They are unique, have a unique sound, unique vocals, sort of a punkish vibe but not quite punk rock. They are simply "The Talking Heads" and their songs are not trying to be like anything else. They thrive on being themselves, and definitly not the norm. So their songs have an honesty to them and are fun to listen to, even the first time, and up to the last time, because they talk to you on a level you can relate to both musically and lyrically. One of my favorite 80’s bands, with REM, The Cure… Every album has its own style. That was their early work. The Stop Making Sense movie is their peak moment.

Tom Tom Club isnt all Female..it was done with her husband and they had other male Musicians on their songs.That being said most of the lead vocals were all female..mostly by Tina and her sister.

Blondie was definitely a punk band and in fact continued on as a punk band even after they dabbled with disco. Punk isnt just Dead Kennedy's, Buzzcocks, or the Ramones. Punk was about expression and experimentation. While New Wave was more of a made for radio sound that was catchy and popish and while different from current music, was basically not very expiremental in the album. Anything Duran Duran, Culture Club, OMD, Furs, ABC, Ah-Hah could be played on the radio. They were more Corporate shills, so to speak. Please dont get me wrong though, i love all of these bands.
@@shawnsnow2655 No; Duran Duran and Culture Club were well past the peak of New Wave, which coexisted with punk in the late 70s. Talking Heads, Cars, Blondie, B52s, The Knack, etc. were American New Wave hitmakers; there were quite a few from the UK (Police; Elvis Costello; Joe Jackson and on and on) and elsewhere as well. This was my music as a 70s teen.
Oh my, Talking Heads. Well, that's a portal into another universe - and it's full of music. 'Art school' bands are just amazing, so inventive, not afraid to experiment, and didn't shy away from going to places that other bands didn't or couldn't. They don't sound the same but Roxy Music, early Ultravox! with John Foxx (The Man Who Dies Every Day), the Rezillos (Destination Venus), and Gloria Mundi (Park Lane) are worth a spin. I saw them all live several times and each gig was a blow-away event. Listened to plenty but didn't get to see Talking Heads.
The Talking Heads have showmanship plus groovy beats. They try to grab your eyes, your ears, and your mind. They had several hits, and they don't all sound like this, but they are interesting. Please cover "Burning Down the House," "Life During Wartime," "Slippery People," "Once in a Lifetime," and several more. :)

David Byrne's crazy psycho voice is wild. It's so neat watching someone hearing it for the first time. A 70's New Wave classic! This must be an early live version because the lyrics are different from the official single you hear on the radio. "New wave" was a reaction to all the big rock bands and laid back bands. New wave had a much harder edge.

Long time "Heads" fan here - they're strangely unique with talent that just draws you in. But I wanna talk about you guys.. I just love you both. Younger people like you give me some kind of hope for a better future. You are both so genuine, open & kind. The type of people you want to have around you but they're so hard to find. It seems no matter what sound you're exposed to, you appreciate what you here, or at least don't judge it. True music appreciaters, and I thank you for that. Remember life without music would b-flat. Music is what feelings sound like. I just love you guys.
Allthe music that could have possibly been composed was done was finished by late mid to late 70's.after that you got a conglomeration from disco, to punk to new way.a lot of interesting and crazy stuff came aout.the 90's brought grunge. What an absolute joy watching y'all discover this band and this song. The immediacy of your pleasure helps, I think, to remember what it was that I felt when I first heard the Talking Heads. I'd follow this song with "Life During Wartime." Keep the whacky vibe alive. There are a lot of really good songs in TH's repertoire, and everyone has their favorites ("there's a party in my mind, and I hope it never stops"), but I can't just listen to one song. For instance, if you listened in sequence to "The Big Country"-"Take Me to the River"-"Heaven"-"Memories Can't Wait", even now these years later, ("you may ask yourself") what was that I just listened to? Their music is not a commodity, listenable music, but, as someone commented, David Byrne injects an Absurdist element that, with the instrumentation, gives the music an edge, a difference, that little twist that niggles and stays with you. I never was fortunate to see them live, but the recordings, and, particularly Jonathan Demme's concert film of them Stop Makin' Sense, give some indication of what that would have been like. And they are fun. However, and I don't always think this about music, Byrne's lyrics are integral to the songs. So, "Life During Wartime", "Burning Down the House", "Once in a Lifetime", these would be great for reactions. (I don't think you could go wrong with any song of theirs; I even like "Don't Worry About the Government.")

You would’ve been in your element growing up in the 70’s and 80’s. This music was our life’s blood. Everywhere we went, all the music you’re taping into was the soundtrack of our lives.
So glad you enjoyed this so much. These were definitive for youth in the late 70's and early 80's, perhaps a reaction to disco (which btw I love!) I was born in 78 so certainly didn't hear this when it appeared. But I can't imagine a world without it. It rocks.

Tina Weymouth is so good on the guitar. She was in the band Tom Tom Club and was known for the song "Genius Of Love" which Mariah Carey has sampled.

Genres: New wave, Art rock, Alternative/Indie, Art Pop, Funk rock, No wave, Pop, Rock: That's what was so wild about the late 70's - 80's there was such diversity it was hard to classify a lot of the music coming out back then, & these guys are a prime example, there was no mold you could fit them in.
The live versions of "Girlfriend Is Better" and Once in a Lifetime" from the film "Stop Making Sense" are absolute musts, especially to see the lead singer David Byrne on stage...As for what genre this represents, this is very nearly the birth of New Wave...

Talking Heads were just so good! "Uh-Oh, Love Comes To Town" is one of my personal favorites, but they did so much great stuff. Tina Weymouth, the bass player, really drives this band, although lead singer David Byrne gets a lot of the attention. I'll echo those who recommended the DVD "Stop Making Sense." Growing up there was a annual rock show in NSW(Australia), kinda like the USA version of Woodstock. I decided to go one year. Packed my 250cc motorcycle with camping gear & organised with some friends that had just moved to Sydney. Spent 3 days travelling to Sydney from Adelaide, camping along the way. Spent 2 days at friend's house & went to this weekend concert. Got to see Eurythmics, David Bowie & many Australian bands. On Saturday night, this band was supposed to come on stage at 11pm. It ended up being 1 am when they came on stage. There is a documentary call Talking Head stop making sense, a kind of stage show(hadn't seen it at that stage). He came on stage with just the tape deck & said because of the delay, his band had walked off. If you have time, watch this documentary, to how this show blew my mind. Band members were from a theatrical rock college. Hence, the show format

David Byrne is only one part of Talking Heads, they would be nothing without their driving force of Tina and Chris's rhythm section and Jerry's keyboard and guitars. Chris Frantz's autobiography "Remain in love" is an absolutely enthralling read; they have had the most amazing musical career.
Couldn't agree more. Frantz' book really brings to light how misguided the David Byrne cult-of-personality can be and reiterates my belief that Remain In Light, and the subsequent tour, were their artistic masterpieces, even if Stop Making Sense is more accessible (and still phenomenal fun).

Bandleader David Byrne envisioned Talking Heads as a kind of counterpoint to the big, loud, gnarly guitars of the 80's; the music is intentionally stripped down and more sparse. It’s amazing how they were able to guess exactly how he dances just by hearing him perform. You really can tell that he’s “spazzing out” in the best way possible.
Probably the best band of all time. So good I even had one of their songs (Naive Melody) as my opening dance when we got married 33 years ago. Talking heads - Wild wild life is the absolute best. I had this album in 80s and it's awesome. They are their own vibe. So many other great songs by them.
I haven't heard a live version yet that does justice to Tina Weymouths bass line. But they have a concert film called Stop Making Sense that is awesome. Bernie Worrell from P-Funk comes in about 3 or 4 songs in. The show starts with the lead singer an acoustic guitar and a boom box. They add a person or 2 with each song.

Just as MTV started, a new style called "New Wave" had started. The TALKING HEADS, DEVO, and quite a few others in the early 80s defined this genre. It is a mix of 70s punk, taken hold of by the new synthesizers popping up at the time. Singing or acting slightly robotically was all the rage.
Talking Heads have always been labelled as post-punk, like Magazine, Siouxie and the Banshees, Pere Ubu, Chrome or Wire. Duran Duran, Human League, OMD is new wave. For me New Wave is more synths oriented, more pop and commercial.
The word New Wave was invented by Talking Head, agent , They used to play CBGB club who was kknow for Punk band, he was trying to promote the band and when some people where backing off when they heard punk, he said no , it's ot punk, it's a new wave ! to set them appart from the prejudice of the CBGB stigma, that radio and tv had back then.

You guys really stepped in this time. Talking Heads is one of the quirkiest bands ever, but they have soooooo many great tunes. "Burning Down the House", "And She Was", "Sugar on My Tongue", and "Take Me to the River" are classics, pretty much everyone is going to probably suggest "Once in a Lifetime". If you want to see just how weird they were, that's the video to see. There are also a number of videos of live performances that are also really fun.
This is a demo version. The album version is a little more polished 🤣. The live acoustic version is pretty awesome too.
I love the "studio version", but this is still probably my favorite. It's so raw and intense and really matches the subject matter so well!

I love the live version on "Stop Makings Sense" so much. 'Life During Wartime' is another absolute favorite, along with 'And She Was' and 'Nothing But Flowers'.
Also, the lyrics are different. Here the 2nd verse goes "I passed out hours ago", whereas the album version goes "You start a conversation you can't even finish". I hadn't heard this before, so I was surprised.

They are considered new wave. It a sound in the 80’s which is a cross between punk and rock and pop and really falls into a category of its own. Like the B52’s and Devo and Ian Dury and the Blockheads. So much fun

These guys are hard to classify, but you can accurately say, "Alternative Rock" They are unique, have a unique sound, unique vocals, sort of a punkish vibe but not quite punk rock. They are simply "The Talking Heads" and their songs are not trying to be like anything else. They thrive on being themselves, and definitly not the norm. So their songs have an honesty to them and are fun to listen to, even the first time, and up to the last time, because they talk to you on a level you can relate to both musically and lyrically. One of my favorite 80’s bands, with REM, The Cure… Every album has its own style. That was their early work. The Stop Making Sense movie is their peak moment.
They led the New Wave music revolution from the late 70's to the 80's. They started at CBGB's in New York around the same time as "Blondie" Both had many charted songs. And the bass player that starts off the song is a chick! Tina Wemouthe, who started the all girl group, "The Tom Tom Club" They have a couple of great songs, "Wordy Rappinghood," and "Genius of Love". Would be great for a FEMALE FRIDAY!!!
Tom Tom Club isnt all Female..it was done with her husband and they had other male Musicians on their songs.That being said most of the lead vocals were all female..mostly by Tina and her sister.

Life During Wartime Live helps capture what this band 'felt' like to see live. Their shows were like no one else's. There was always an absurdist quality that came from Byrne's Asperger's. He really shows that that 'disorder' is really just a cool way of seeing the world.
They had a real hard time classifying Byrne's sound. Their concerts were like living art at times. 'Burning down the house.....'

Blondie was definitely a punk band and in fact continued on as a punk band even after they dabbled with disco. Punk isnt just Dead Kennedy's, Buzzcocks, or the Ramones. Punk was about expression and experimentation. While New Wave was more of a made for radio sound that was catchy and popish and while different from current music, was basically not very expiremental in the album.
Anything Duran Duran, Culture Club, OMD, Furs, ABC, Ah-Hah could be played on the radio. They were more Corporate shills, so to speak. Please dont get me wrong though, i love all of these bands.

Talking Heads, Cars, Blondie, B52s, The Knack, etc. were American New Wave hitmakers; there were quite a few from the UK (Police; Elvis Costello; Joe Jackson and on and on) and elsewhere as well. This was my music as a 70s teen.

Oh my, Talking Heads. Well, that's a portal into another universe - and it's full of music. 'Art school' bands are just amazing, so inventive, not afraid to experiment, and didn't shy away from going to places that other bands didn't or couldn't. They don't sound the same but Roxy Music, early Ultravox! with John Foxx (The Man Who Dies Every Day), the Rezillos (Destination Venus), and Gloria Mundi (Park Lane) are worth a spin. I saw them all live several times and each gig was a blow-away event. Listened to plenty but didn't get to see Talking Heads.
The Talking Heads have showmanship plus groovy beats. They try to grab your eyes, your ears, and your mind. They had several hits, and they don't all sound like this, but they are interesting.

David Byrne's crazy psycho voice is wild. It's so neat watching someone hearing it for the first time. A 70's New Wave classic! This must be an early live version because the lyrics are different from the official single you hear on the radio. "New wave" was a reaction to all the big rock bands and laid back bands. New wave had a much harder edge.
I was excited to see their reaction but this isn't the one I'm used to hearing.. I like it but wasn't expecting that at all lol

Long time "Heads" fan here - they're strangely unique with talent that just draws you in. But I wanna talk about you guys.. I just love you both. Younger people like you give me some kind of hope for a better future. You are both so genuine, open & kind. The type of people you want to have around you but they're so hard to find. It seems no matter what sound you're exposed to, you appreciate what you here, or at least don't judge it. True music appreciaters, and I thank you for that. Remember life without music would b-flat.

Allthe music that could have possibly been composed was done was finished by late mid to late 70's.after that you got a conglomeration from disco, to punk to new way.a lot of interesting and crazy stuff came aout.the 90's brought grunge. And as bubba said when he was discussing with Forrest gump in the movie, all the ways you can serve shrimp.that was about it.

What an absolute joy watching y'all discover this band and this song. The immediacy of your pleasure helps, I think, to remember what it was that I felt when I first heard the Talking Heads. I'd follow this song with "Life During Wartime." Keep the whacky vibe alive. There are a lot of really good songs in TH's repertoire, and everyone has their favorites ("there's a party in my mind, and I hope it never stops"), but I can't just listen to one song. For instance, if you listened in sequence to "The Big Country"-"Take Me to the River"-"Heaven"-"Memories Can't Wait", even now these years later, ("you may ask yourself") what was that I just listened to? Their music is not a commodity, listenable music, but, as someone commented, David Byrne injects an Absurdist element that, with the instrumentation, gives the music an edge, a difference, that little twist that niggles and stays with you. I never was fortunate to see them live, but the recordings, and, particularly Jonathan Demme's concert film of them Stop Makin' Sense, give some indication of what that would have been like. And they are fun. However, and I don't always think this about music, Byrne's lyrics are integral to the songs. So, "Life During Wartime", "Burning Down the House", "Once in a Lifetime", these would be great for reactions. (I don't think you could go wrong with any song of theirs; I even like "Don't Worry About the Government.")

You would’ve been in your element growing up in the 70’s and 80’s. This music was our life’s blood. Everywhere we went, all the music you’re taping into was the soundtrack of our lives.
So glad you enjoyed this so much. These were definitive for youth in the late 70's and early 80's, perhaps a reaction to disco (which btw I love!) I was born in 78 so certainly didn't hear this when it appeared. But I can't imagine a world without it. It rocks.
David Byrne is the lead singer, a genius artist. Talking Heads is one of the most interesting and unique 'New Wave' Groups. You have to watch a live concert of this fantastic band. Amazing.

"Burning Down The House" I've karaoked to. "Once In A Life Time" "Take Me To The River" "Road To Nowhere" (from Little Monsters soundtrack), "Wild Wild Life", "And She Was" are some of their greatest hits. Tina Weymouth is so good on the guitar. She was in the band Tom Tom Club and was known for the song "Genius Of Love" which Mariah Carey has sampled.
I love this reaction, you guys took it as it's supposed to be understood, as a creative, weird, fun, good song with good music! I've seen other reactors take it really literally and not have fun with it at all. It's a huge hit for a reason!

The live versions of "Girlfriend Is Better" and Once in a Lifetime" from the film "Stop Making Sense" are absolute musts, especially to see the lead singer David Byrne on stage...As for what genre this represents, this is very nearly the birth of New Wave...

Talking Heads were just so good! "Uh-Oh, Love Comes To Town" is one of my personal favorites, but they did so much great stuff. Tina Weymouth, the bass player, really drives this band, although lead singer David Byrne gets a lot of the attention. I'll echo those who recommended the DVD "Stop Making Sense." Growing up there was a annual rock show in NSW(Australia), kinda like the USA version of Woodstock. I decided to go one year. Packed my 250cc motorcycle with camping gear & organised with some friends that had just moved to Sydney. Spent 3 days travelling to Sydney from Adelaide, camping along the way. Spent 2 days at friend's house & went to this weekend concert. Got to see Eurythmics, David Bowie & many Australian bands. On Saturday night, this band was supposed to come on stage at 11pm. It ended up being 1 am when they came on stage. There is a documentary call Talking Head stop making sense, a kind of stage show(hadn't seen it at that stage). He came on stage with just the tape deck & said because of the delay, his band had walked off. If you have time, watch this documentary, to how this show blew my mind. Band members were from a theatrical rock college. Hence, the show format
The bass player, Tina Weymouth, was also in the Tom Tom Club, and played the iconic bass line in their song Genius Of Love. Definitely worth a listen.

You picked the best version of the song, IMO - it's a rare mix of an alternate take, not the same as the original album. Quite a treat. Next up, try Burnin' Down the House or Life During Wartime. David Byrne is only one part of Talking Heads, they would be nothing without their driving force of Tina and Chris's rhythm section and Jerry's keyboard and guitars. Chris Frantz's autobiography "Remain in love" is an absolutely enthralling read; they have had the most amazing musical career.
Tom Tom Club is something they should also react to.
Couldn't agree more. Frantz' book really brings to light how misguided the David Byrne cult-of-personality can be and reiterates my belief that Remain In Light, and the subsequent tour, were their artistic masterpieces, even if Stop Making Sense is more accessible (and still phenomenal fun).

This is the best intro to this band you could have gotten! Bandleader David Byrne envisioned Talking Heads as a kind of counterpoint to the big, loud, gnarly guitars of the 80's; the music is intentionally stripped down and more sparse. If you want to see the band live, they gave us one of the great concert movies of all time, "Stop Making Sense."

It’s amazing how they were able to guess exactly how he dances just by hearing him perform. You really can tell that he’s “spazzing out” in the best way possible.
Probably the best band of all time. So good I even had one of their songs (Naive Melody) as my opening dance when we got married 33 years ago. Stop making sense was the gig that every band since have been trying to emulate. Definitely watch the live version of Life During Wartime.

J&A, You'll love their "Life During Wartime", "Take Me To The River", "Once In A Lifetime", "Crosseyed And Painless" and many more. Tina Weymouth learned to play bass watching Suzi Quatro videos. They started in the 1970's and are very creative. This is not the best version of the song.

Talking heads - Wild wild life is the absolute best. I had this album in 80s and it's awesome. They are their own vibe. So many other great songs by them.
I haven't heard a live version yet that does justice to Tina Weymouths bass line. But they have a concert film called Stop Making Sense that is awesome. Bernie Worrell from P-Funk comes in about 3 or 4 songs in. The show starts with the lead singer an acoustic guitar and a boom box. They add a person or 2 with each song.
New Wave and Alternative 80s were genres of the 80s and they were labeled as such.
Talking Heads started as "New Wave". Overall they just became a great rock band with many elements to their sound.
