In hindsight, I regret that. They are so creative & talented… and musicianship is highly underrated. Love the songwriting, love the performances… love all of it… one of my all time favorites
I listened to SOME of their hits that were on the radio but by and large I was a metalhead and also dismissed them all too easily; I now look back with regret that I didn't listen to them more "back in the day". VERY talented songwriters/performers.

The music is so fun and bouncy, don't forget what they are singing about. living during a war, what you have , your needs , what you care about . its actually pretty heavy.
"This aint no party, this aint no disco" is one of the best lyrics ever. There aren't many songs about anarchy but this one captures the experience. Thank you guys!

The running in place.... imagine the exhaustion of being in the middle of a war zone. Just trying to survive day to day. And those drum kicks... bombs? Gunshots? Look at the way Alex Weir (the guitarist) "shoots" at Byrne as he runs by.
I've loved the Talking Heads since the first time I heard them. This band, the B-52s and David Bowie all possess that avant garde creativity that actually pulls in people of all walks of life. They are each unique. They are all weird but in the coolest way possible. They all have that rare spark of genius at precisely the right time that just happens because it was meant to be. Thanks for responding to the live version, it truly was joyous to watch.
Amber, you’re the first reactor to this performance I’ve heard to even mention the lyrics! The contrast between the madcap eccentric dance party music, and the dark lyrics is what raises this performance to art. We’ve not had warfare in our homeland since 1865, and Byrne does a poetic job of trying to describe what it might be like in NYC, in the late ‘70’s when this was written. Jay, Byrne is absolutely singing(!) in his own unique style. He never misses a note he goes for, the melody is always there, and he still has the breath to be as weirdly expressive as he wants to be! Not to mention dancing, jogging, rolling on the floor…you know 😆
Not exactly about war but about undercover spies (and I suspect a bit of double meaning about being a celebrity also). "Changed my hair so many times I dont know what I look like..."

The whole ‘Stop Making Sense’ movie is a trip. It’s a work of art that needs to be seen in its entirety. Great 80s artefact. The other one to see is The Band in ‘The Last Waltz’. Both of these actually changed me as a person.
Caught the Last Waltz on TV here in the UK back in the early 80s and taped the soundtrack (pre video recorder). Practically wore out the tape. It spoiled me, I don't really like the album versions of any of the songs from it!
I wish I had the amount of energy David Byrne has in his little toe. I'd be set for life. Man's just doing a cross country around the stage. I get winded running for the bus.
A&J, you just watched husband and wife Chris Frantz (drums) and Tina Weymouth “kicking bass”. AKA……………. Tom Tom Club. Which was a side project from Talking Heads and the rhythm section for the group.
They were wonderful live. I saw them during this tour. The band was a collaboration with drummer Chris Frantz, bassist Tina Weymouth (married to Frantz) and keyboardist Jerry Harrison contributing to the sound. The expansion of the band just made it deeper and richer. Makes sure to see the entire film, Stop Making Sense.

A Talking Heads concert was incredible! First of all, there was one set ticket price and no assigned seating- if you wanted to dance, you went up front. The energy built during the show until you suddenly found yourself outside wondering how much time had passed.
I saw this show live back in '84. It was the BEST CONCERT I've ever attended (and I've been to a few goodies). Seriously, just sit down (for a while at least) and watch the whole of 'Stop Making Sense.' It is rightly regarded as being in the argument for the best concert film ever made; best band in the world at the time, at the peak of their powers, filmed by a fabulous director - what more would you like? It starts off brilliantly and just keeps getting better (and funkier) from there. Just watch it!
My bet is with your growing appreciation of the genius of Talking Heads…you’ll hear a completely different “once in a lifetime” full of depth and meaning.

There is so much great about this song. I want to highlight the back up singers. They bring so much to the table and are fully on board with some of the wackier moments of the performance. I showed my son "Stop Making Sense" when he was in high school. Years later, he said he wanted to dance at his wedding reception like David Byrne does in this song. The movie “Stop Making Sense” is being released later this year in theaters for its 40th anniversary (makes me feel oooold). You guys should definitely make it a date night.
One of the greatest concert experiences I’ve had was seeing The Talking Heads on this tour. A friend’s mother worked for the theater and was able to get us seats in the orchestra pit, in front of the first row!!
Highly recommend "Girlfriend Is Better" from this same live concert video. This features the infamous "big suit"...The physical stamina and conditioning required to perform live like this is extremely high. Near the end, it's one thing for him to jog several laps around the stage; it's another level that the last time around he appears to actually sprint as fast as he possibly can...
Time for a massive shoutout to Jerry Harrison, the genius on the keyboards, who set the entire tone for this song - along with the base riffs of Tina Weymouth (his WIFE). Don't know if you remember, but the hella weird song "Genius of Love" you did a year or so ago, by Tom Tom Club? That was Jerry and Tina's side project. (Correction: Tina was married to Chris Frantz, the drummer. Apologies.)
That's actually Chris Frantz, the drummer, who is married to Tina Weymouth. They did Tom Tom Club. But Jerry Harrison is an incredible keyboard player as well.
@@hellokimmy68 Dang you're right. All these rock facts got mixed up in my brain over the decades. But I seem to also remember (hopefully correctly) that Jerry Harrison had a side project called Casual Gods that was phenomenal.
I like how David laid on the floor to give himself a resting moment because he knew that he was about to run laps around the stage. Kudos to the spotlight guy that tried to track David while he ran laps then just gave up. LOL
Jay &Amber, You'll love their "Crosseyed And Painless" and "Cities" !!! Two Talking Heads song in same month, great job! edit - Thanks for doing this one!! The Mudd Club and CBGB were NYC clubs where alot of 'new wave' bands played early in their career.
My wife and I saw this concert film for the first time in years over lockdown. We realized just how much Tina Weymouth (bass) is the core that all the others build from.
When things are a tad stressful, I will say "this ain't no party, this ain't no disco..." to lighten the mood. Still works! Love the Talking Heads and Mr. Byrne.
I saw the movie last night at a big theater in Brooklyn. Then the band came out and did a Q&A with Questlove. It was such a fun night. The whole way through the movie the audience was dancing and clapping and singing along.
Saw them .London.Years ago. Sat at back of Albert Hall. This track came on, leapt from my seat, exited to the corridor surrounding AH and ran towards the direction the stage, to get a better view. Pulled back the red velvet curtain entrance I assumed would be row F or something. No. Guests and press etc to the side of stage. I grabbed a glass of wine off of a table and proceeded to engage a rather posh woman on the merits of their performance that night. At one point I gestured at my mates staring, mouths wide open. Good night that. Great band.
I was fortunate to have seen this concert live. I was not really familiar with The Talking Heads and they blew me away. After all these years and concerts it still ranks in the top five concerts I have seen.

I'm glad I stopped by your channel. I like the pictures on your walls and you are an adorable couple. Keep up the good work!
So happy you guys appreciate them!
Here's an offbeat tune,
Been Caught Stealing by Jane's Addiction!
I've always loved the energy during this song. Great song.
Girlfriend is better is fantastic
To say nothing of all the wires and cables he has to not trip over while he is doing that.
Apologies.)
Tina is married to Chris the drummer not jerry
That's actually Chris Frantz, the drummer, who is married to Tina Weymouth. They did Tom Tom Club. But Jerry Harrison is an incredible keyboard player as well.
@@hellokimmy68 Dang you're right. All these rock facts got mixed up in my brain over the decades. But I seem to also remember (hopefully correctly) that Jerry Harrison had a side project called Casual Gods that was phenomenal.
Talking Heads, like David Bowie, is performance art. Dave Byrne calls himself an artist and performer before singer.
Listen to take me to the river too
They reacted to that song Feb 25, 2023. Great cover
They did already
Burning down the house
I like how David laid on the floor to give himself a resting moment because he knew that he was about to run laps around the stage. Kudos to the spotlight guy that tried to track David while he ran laps then just gave up. LOL
At the 1980's dance parties, when the Talking Heads were played, everyone ran to the dance floor. So much fun.
Hence the lyric in this song "this aint no Mudd Clubb, or CBGB...". Love "Cities" also. "Find a city, find myself a city to live in...."
@@elcorado83 thank you. The amazing performance probably distracted them from those lyrics.
It isn't just David Byrne, Tina Weymouth, the bassist, is easily half of the creative force in Talking Heads.
Byrne.
The bass player is amazing. keeping that bass line clean and in time all while running in place for most of the song...talent!
Saw this concert in Melbourne, Australia in Jan 1984. Changed my life and remains the greatest concert I’ve ever seen (and trust me , I’ve seen a few)
I saw the movie last night at a big theater in Brooklyn. Then the band came out and did a Q&A with Questlove. It was such a fun night. The whole way through the movie the audience was dancing and clapping and singing along.
"Stop Making Sense" is being rereleased in theaters in 4K this August (2023).
The Talking Heads and Oingo Boingo have the best energy live, hands down.
Great band.
Like others have said, you HAVE to watch this whole concert movie. It's amazing!
I was fortunate to have seen this concert live. I was not really familiar with The Talking Heads and they blew me away. After all these years and concerts it still ranks in the top five concerts I have seen.
This is from their concert film "Stop Making Sense". The show is outstanding from beginning to end!
David Byrne can dance like a wet noodle. I've adored them since the 80s. Viva Talking Heads!
It's a Freak Out! Saw The Talking Heads in 77 at the Boston Architectural Center been a huge fan ever since. Thank you for this reaction. You made me smile.
Baby Boomer here. Stop Making Sense concert. 1984. BEST concert I've ever seen. Just find a way to see this concert movie. Best concert movie ever. Opens with Psycho Killer. EVERYONE IN the audience of 18,000 people stood up. AND STAYED standing for the whole concert. This never happened. He ran and jumped through the whole concert. He took a break in the middle, costume change and the TomTom Club did a few tunes. Thank goodness for the Sisters. He didn't have to run alone!
First album 1977. Welcome to New Wave Art Pop music! Heralded the 80s music scene.
Most underrated bass player in rock & roll history!
I'm glad you friends like Talking Heads. They are the best, sometimes.
Bernie on keyboards!!! is almost always best.
You made me smile today.
He is so fluid in his dance
what an energy, its unbelievable.I want to know what are they taking to last like for the whole concert again unbelievale.
The symbolism throughout this song is almost thesis worthy. The song itself is both reminiscent and representative of my young adult years. ❤
