@@SirHairless Of course the translation is immensely better than nothing. All your non-Spanish speaking viewers are thankful for it, I'm sure. But I hope you would agree that truly great lyrics, like poetry, play with a depth of meaning, metric, and tone, that add a layer of beauty that can only be appreciated with mastery of the language. The full artistry and beauty of this piece makes total sense only in Spanish.

This descending chord progression from the chorus is also called the "Andalusian Cadence" and is very typical for flamenco where it's usually thought of more as a modal phrygian key - in this case eb phrygian rather than ab minor.

And by the way, the castanets sound every time that cadence sounds.
In my opinion Mecano is the best Spanish pop group of all time. Both composing brothers gave their records an equilibrium of variety and consistency. One of them with the most up to date synth pop music and the other being chamaleonic with a wide range of styles.
And the best of them is that their lyrics are also very diverse, some are humorous and others are really moving.

I’m totally into all those little "weird" musical details of the composition and I guess I might be slightly in love with the 80’s gorgeous depiction of the vocalist!😅Forestella is really wonderful interpreting this song but they will need to forgive me now, because their beautiful rendition of ‘Hijo de la luna’ will get the second place in my heart after discovering this *amazing* original version❣

Mecano was a "pop" band from Spain, whose members were Ana Torroja (voice) and the brothers José María and Ignacio (Nacho) Cano who, apart from playing several instruments, wrote the songs (music and lyrics). This is probably one of the most beautiful and acclaimed songs in the history of Spanish "pop" and, at the time it became such a great hit in Spain that soon, Montserrat Caballe recorded it for her CD "Eternal Caballe" in 1987/88; after her, many others (Sarah Brightman, etc). However, in my opinion, none of the covers are more perfect than the original version by the group.
By the way, Caballé suggested José María Cano that he should write an entire opera to complete the story... and Cano accepted. He quitted the band for almost two years to write the opera, and when he finished it and it was premiered onstage, the critics destroyed it with no mercy. So they did with the recording they had (previously) made of this opera, with a cast that included reknown opera singers like Renée Fleming (if I don't remember wrongly), which was a total flop at the charts. I've never heard the entire opera (as a matter of fact, it's impossible to find anywhere) but to this day I'm still very intrigued about what it was like...

A mí me pareció espectacular.

MECANO was quite a smash when they came into the musical scene. I remember how some people absolutely loved them and some absolutely hated them. They have very unique lyrics, melodies, harmonies, scansion, themes, dynamics. Not your average group by any stretch. They also disbanded at the height of popularity, which left a lot of us wanting more.
I could say a lot of things, but I think it would be better if you deep dive into this group. Mu suggestions: Dali, Heroes de la Antartida, Cruz de Navajas, el 7 de septiembre, No es serio este cementerio, Un ano mas, el blues del esclavo. Honestly, all of their songs are breathtaking. It is composed, aranged, and played by the two brothers that you saw in the video.

I owe it to Mecano that I have any Spanish at all 😂 Before this international hit & this album, they started out as a New Wave band & the cool nerds at my school started getting into that stuff as well when the Hijo de la Luna furor had died down.. Oh My god I remember in nightclubs in mid -late 1980s that would be the final closing slow dance every time ... and key changes you do not like, I love it, literarily makes my hair stand in overwhelming emotion, cause it hits me like the wave of my feet

I liked your reaction/analysis of this amazing song!
How the world works, really... I got to know Mecano and this song specifically because my favorite group did a cover of it and I really liked the original!
I hope the request you received is the Forestella cover (as amazing as the original). If not, here's my suggestion.

One of the strongest and most beautiful songs of the 80'. Always loved it. For me, the legend this song is based on, was also very interesting. But the version of Forestella is also beautiful, worth to listen ...

I have this song in a Spotify playlist that I stumbled upon being paired with Dimash songs and I have listened enraptured by the fascinating rhythms and countermelodies, along with her bewitching voice… but I had never seen them nor did I know the background and story. (I also realized that I had both this version and the cover done by Forestella - different feeling.). Intriguing and the lead singer is stunning! Wow! (Such an 80s style of video too!). As always, enjoyed your analysis and insight into the melody. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦.

Hi! The group is spanish, so the endings of the sections of the song with castanets and the notes the melody has in these parts, reflects the traditional music from Spain, like flamenco

During the creation of this song, Jose Maria Cano, one of the members of the group and composer, saw that the story fell short and composed the opera called "LUNA" (moon) where singers such as Ainhoa Arteta or Placido Domingo participated. there is a magnificent version by the heavy group "stravaganzza" with the same title, if you have time listen to it

The greatest analysis of the song I've ever seen. I was a child when this song came out. I understand what you mean when you say that this is not a pop song. Indeed, I've always thought that the gender for this song is "copla" a famous gender music in Spain. Most of times "copla" is confused with "flamenco" 'cause both of them are based on Phrygian scale. Examples of "copla" gender is "ojos verdes".

Ah I think I see, "género" in Spanish for "musical style" is called a "genre" in English, although it does correctly translate to "gender" in other instances like grammatical gender

Mecano was the most successful pop group in Spain in the 80s and 90s.
Formed by two brothers composers (Jose María and Nacho Cano) and with Ana Torroja as vocalist.
If you listen to more of them you will see that there are clearly two types of songs on their discs:
    - The most melodic, classical and "conventional" ones (for example in their instrumental arrangements) composed by Jose María (like this "Hijo de la Luna").
    - The most electronic and "experimental" ones composed by Nacho, the youngest brother.

Such a very good job you have done! Normally I didn't understand the technical analyzed songs upload by reaction channels at all. I don't usually whatching at them. Most of time I didn't understand what the hack the person is trying to explain to me, a simple music lover with a low level of education in music. But you have made my day! You should have been my music teacher! 😁This great Idea of explaining the notes and music scales and their effects, by showing the piano keyboard while playing piano, catched me up. At all I understood exactly what was meant. Kudos to your pedagogical skills, all this without ruining the extraordinary beauty of the song. In addition I also understand your English very well. Sometimes it's a struggle for me to grasp the laguage depending on dialect.

I've always loved this song, plenty of Mecano songs are great, They weren't afraid of doing weird, quirky songs. One of my favorites is about the dead waking up at night, No es serio este cementerio (It's not serious this cemetery ). Growing up In Latin America it's weird to think of Mecano as unknown XD btw The composers are the guys that did the chest bump, the Cano brothers. I think this song in particular was composed by the short haired one.

    • @SirHairless
      @SirHairless  26 дней назад +4

Oh it seems they're not unknown! Just not as big in the non-Spanish speaking countries it seems, based on the comments I've received I find it fascinating how some of the biggest artists in the world (by numbers) are unknown to people of many cultures. It's why we need to share music because there must be so many gems out there we'd otherwise never discover
