Mecano changed the pop music in Spanish forever. Their lyrics and the complexity of their compositions thanks to the virtuoso Nacho Cano have no comparison. Hijo de la Luna is a masterpiece of the music in Spanish language and for this reason, it is timeless.

This beautiful song by "Mecano" was a great success in Chile too ... The lyrics tell the story of a magical pact that a young gypsy girl makes with the Moon to get the love of a gypsy boy ... This legend with a tragic ending had such an impact on my 80s childhood that later, during my university years (in the 90s), it was the inspiration for a stop-motion video that I made for a class and with which I and my classmates obtained an excellent grade 😁😂 ... The song is from 1986 album, Entre el cielo y la tierra. My dad just passed away after 8 months battling a brain tumor. His name was Jose María Cámara and he was a music producer and considered the disocverer of bands like Mecano. This band has been very present in my life, meeting the 3 members as a kid and also working in the spanish musical based on their songs: Hoy no me puedo levantar. After the musical finished I didnt listen to Mecano for many years, I lived abroad and radio stations there dindt play it and I needed a break from their music, even as a fan. After my dad´s passing, last month their music follows me everywhere and I am confronted with emotions...Jose María Cano and Nacho Cano came last month to my father´s incineration and since then almost every day memories of my dad assult me, many of them in the form of Mecano. Why did this video appear in my youtube suggestions? Google? Anyways. Amazing band, amazing musica and amazing memories as painful as they are right now. Rest in peace Dad, we sorely miss you.

"Hijo de la Luna" (English: "Son of the Moon") is a song written by José María Cano performed originally by the Spanish band Mecano with lead singer Ana Torroja. It appeared on their 1986 album, Entre el cielo y el suelo and had great success all over the Spanish speaking world, as did the album. The lyrics depict a Romani woman begging to the moon to marry a Roma man (calé). In exchange the moon asks for the woman's first-born as payment. After the child is born, his parents are dismayed to see that his skin is the whitest white and his eyes are grey, even though they both have dark skin and dark eyes. The lyrics explain that the child is a "lunar Albino." But the man presumes that the father is a "payo" (a non-Roma person) and furiously stabs his wife to death. He takes the child and runs into the wild, where the man abandons the child to die of exposure. Later the baby is said to live happily ever after with the Moon as his mother. When the child cries, the Moon wanes to cradle and comfort him. The chorus says that the moon wants to be a mother, yet cannot find a lover who will make her his wife, and questions her as to what she would do with a human child. The French translation of the song asks a more precise question (Tell me, silvery moon, You who has no arms, How will you rock the child?), which is answered in the last stanza (And whenever the child cries, She [The Moon] crescents, Turning herself into a light-cradle). In turn, the Moon doubts the mother's commitment to the little boy, wondering how much she can love her child if she is eager to trade him for a partner.

Dereck that song year release was 1986 .This group was very popular at Spain , France , Italy , and South america.
It's a 3x rythme (like waltz), wich makes it sound a bit medieval wich goes well with the mystical aspect of the lyrics.
The song was first issued in 1986, the reissued for the French release in 1991 with a video.
It's just perfect.
A huge succes in France at that time.
Having a 1337 video for this track is right on point... Really good song.
Mecano came out a few years after Franco died and for me part of a super spanish cultural and liberated movment called "la Movida" were Spain showed us the best in arts.
Solo quiero decir que doy gracias a la vida por haber vivido mi juventud en los años 80 en España. 💖🇪🇸👏 Los que lo habéis vivido sabéis de lo que hablo. 😉
I love the melody, my favourite songs among Mecano's
But the most important thing about Mecano is the lyrics, always
Es tan hermosa que hay muchas versiones en inglés italiano francés y lo último que encontré es al grupo Forestella ,coreanos que lo hicieron precioso ,reacciona a ellos por favor son increibles
Si formidable interpretación

The french version sounds well too.

The song first appeared in the 1986 album ENTRE EL CIELO Y EL SUELO and was then re issued in the french edition of DESCANSO DOMINICAL in 1988. But the french version of the song and the video, even for Spain were made in 1990
