Walt Disney wasn't much of an animator. He founded and produced Walt Disney Studios and funded most of their early production, but he didn't do a lot of the actual animation himself. Most of that credit goes to animators like Ub Iwerks, which by the way is pronounced Oobee Iwerks, and the Nine Old Men. And how dare you omit Don Bluth and Brad Bird from the list.

Professor Xavier The list is just fine. It just happens to not fit your preference. It doesn't fully fit mine either, but that doesn't make it a bad list. It just makes my preference different than the norm.
Oh my God, this list has almost no animators on it. It's a list of animation directors. Tex Avery, Miyazaki, Chuck Jones, and Ub Iwerks were the only people on this list who actually animated on their studio work. Worthy of an honorable mention on a top 10 animators list? No! Nightmare Before Christmas is different. Ever tried to make characters with plasticine that didn't look like a penis with legs? Good fucking luck with that! The only thing this has in common with South Park is that they are both stop motion animations, but that's about it. And for the record, I own the South Park season 1 to 15 DVD collection... Yeah... I am not really a "hater" of the show. But i refuse to call it Iconic for it's animation. Yes, it stands out, but the animation is far from a crown achievement as far as I am concerned. That doesn't mean that I think that everything has to be nice colorful and clean. If you look at princess Kaguya for exemple, many don't like the way it's animated but this an animation style that stands out and has a lot of effort and merit to it. And again, it's unique because it is unlikely that we will ever see this type of animation again... Ever! South Park may be "unique" (I will come back to way I quote that word later) but it's certainly no that worth praizing you when all you are animating is this www.customsouthparks.com/ I think it's more accurate to say that South Park "stands out". Rather than saying that it is unique. Unique Implies that you have done something that can never be reproduced or at the very least can't easily reproduce. While south park can be copy-pasted by just about anyone. Paprika IS unique, because no one can reproduce what Satoshi Kon did there. Again, that just my opinion. Don't take it as hate, or me being offended lol.
jm somville I still stand by my Nick Park argument, although it may be a little more difficult to animate with clay over construction paper, which I heard somewhere has been replaced with computer-based animation a few years ago. I can't remember where I heard that from.
I bet there'll be a 2nd list like this b/c there are so many animators out there with talent: Neil Cierciga (spell check on that) Ralph Bahkshi Osamu Tezuka
Ralph Bakshi is, hands down, my favorite animator of all time... "Wizards" is one of my all time favorite (animated) movies... Sure, he made "Cool World", but at least he did "Lord of the Rings", "Heavy Traffic", "Coonskin", and "American Pop"... I love all the ones listed, but I'll always have Bakshi with me... I hope he gets "Last Days of Coney Island" done soon and I may bask in another Bakshi masterpiece...
In the Honorable Mention, I would have included Bob Clampett (Tweety Pie, Beanie & Cecil), Isidore "Friz" Freleng (Bugs Bunny, Pink Panther) and Walter Lantz (Woody Woodpecker, et al).
@@ericpivaral4747 That's true I don't like what John k did but Ren and Stimpy is a classic Much like roman Polanski, what he did is horrible but you can't deny his great movies
This is actually a pretty strong list, but there are still too many people left behind from this list: 1. Don Bluth. Sure, his animation style is not the most original, but The Secret of Nimh, Land Before Time and Anastasia are all great and iconic films, and the video games Dragon's Lair and Space Ace were revolutionary! 2. Brad Bird, who made The Iron Giant, The Incredibles and Ratatouille! Again, all amazing and iconic movies! 3. Ralph Bakshi, responsible for many adult animated films, like Fritz the Cat, Heavy Traffic, Coonskin, and the list goes on! 4. Sylvain Chomet. Much like his animated films, he needs no explanation, or any talk. Also, Matt Groening is waaay too high on this list! I don't care how successful The Simpsons is, he only deserves an Honorable Mention to me!
It's sad that Ralph Bakshi, Satoshi Kon and Don Bluth didn't even get an honorable mention. Those guys are legends. Either way, great list and it's awesome seeing Chuck Jones, Miyazaki and Disney at the top of the list.
@@williamkerfoot8039 this list focuses on popularity, Powerpuff Girls is one of the best cartoons of all time and Powerpuff Girls it's the reason why Cartoon Network is one of the most popular channels on TV.
Can we all just agree that Walt Disney deserves #1? He was a great animator and made awesome movies. Just accept the fact that he has made stuff almost 90 years ago
Obvious #1 is obvious. Happy with Miyazaki at #2 though. He was my childhood, and I love every single one he's movies. An incredible man and inspiration. :3
I'm so happy that Uncle Walt is number 1(you forgot to mention that he gave us the first ever(or at least, as far we know) animated movie "Snow White and the seven dwarfs" , the most perfect animated movie ever "Fantasia" ). But I was also expecting to see Don Bluth. And since puppetry is technically animation, you also should have mentioned Jim Henson.
Cool list! Stephen Hillenburg (creator of SpongeBob) would've been on this list because he has studied the ocean before working on SpongeBob. I also have biography books of Matt Groening and William Hanna and Joseph Barbera.
should have known there would be a bunch of weeaboos in the comments complaining that there werent more japanese entries or miyazaki should have been first. i mean i like miyazaki but come on, when you think of animation disney always comes to mind.
I have a few ideas for top ten lists: 1. Top ten Thomas and Friends/ Railway Series characters 2. Top ten Thomas and Friends/ Railway Series RUclips fans 3. Top ten fictional trains 4. Top ten locomotive classes

Ken Harris, Robert Mckimson, None of the Nine Old Men, Winsor McCay, Bill Tytla, Art Babbitt, John Kricfalusi, the list goes on of unacceptable omissions. And you have some serious confusion about the difference between animators and directors/producers. Matt Groening is brilliant but he's only ever animated on the Simpsons shorts. And his work, though great, is not valid as animation, neither is the animation in South Park. Walt Disney was a visionary but he could not draw well and only ever animated on the Laugh-O-Grams and the earliest Alice Comedies.
Walt Disney started as a cartoonist and later became an animator for a brief period of time. But his role in his most succesful movies and shorts was as a producer. In my humble opinion, he is definitely one of the most iconic animators... but he probably doesn't qualify as one of the greatest.
I think this is a great list. The animators chosen had ideal rankings and I'm over the moon with how they included Nick Park! However, I think Don Bluth and Ralph Bakshi should've been honourable mentions. They should also consider mentioning Lotte Reigner (The Adventures of Prince Achmed) in another video.
I'm shocked that Friz Freling wasn't even an honorable mention on this list. He was pretty much the other half of Warner Brothers Animation in the 40's and 50s with Chuck Jones. He's won 5 oscars, and not only helped the creation of Bugs, and Porky Pig, but created Yosemite Sam, Sylvester, Tweety, and Speedy Gonzalez. He's also got the most more Animations at WB than Chuck Jones, so there's that too. He's not more iconinc that Chuck Jones, but longer honourable mention would be nice
Mike Judge (creator of king of the hill and beavis and butthead), Don Hertzfelt (creator of rejected and such a beautiful day), and Don Bluth (creator of land before time and American tail) should've been on the list
Great list! I have been in love with animation since I can remember, and I agree with everyone on this list. I still watch the classic Walt Disney animation to this day,and it always makes me smile ear to ear. Hayo Miazaki is also my favorite for other reasons. Studio Ghibli films always bring out the kid inside and awakens my imagination. I am also glad to see Nick Park on the list! His clay-mation always gives me a good laugh and brings out the cheekiness in all of us :P
KyujiRico Z. Although none of them (except 2 or 3 if them) are actual animators. This list proves that they have no idea what the hell they are talking about! A list of the greatest animators where Glen Kean isn't mentioned at all is all fucked up.

While not as well known or respected in the industry as others on the list, a nod to Monty Oum would have been cool especially considering his recent passing. Also if you're going to mention Trey Parker and Matt Stone, might as well put Don Hertzfelt in there.
Brian Cosgrove and Mark Hall who are an English animators for their best known as the creators of the animated children shows Danger Mouse, The Wind in the Willows, Count Duckula and The BFG. These were all my favorites cartoons when I was a child.
Solarstar10 newer Simpsons yes but the first 12 seasons of the Simpsons may be the greatest show ever created, most of those episodes are unmatched by any show

Reven344 Might be something to do with the videos name. "Iconic" Now remember that Disney started creating cartoons in 1930, while the other guy only did something that had already been done a million times.
He gets #1 taken, because he wouldn't deserve that spot even in 100 years. Disney is better and more iconic in every aspect. Miyazaki is not even worthy of licking Disney's feet.
2 people I think should've been on list or honorable mention 1. Willias O'Brian: clay mated King Kong and more 2. The person behind Jurassic Park. That needs credit
YoungFrankenstein Yeah, first female animator on CN in fact. But she doesn't have a deep enough file sheet to be mentioned with these animation prophets. They raised your Grandparents, Parents, and possibly your childhood as well (1910-2010). Give her 5 or 10 years when she has created more projects. She'll be on a future list, because children ranges 5-10 are growing on her animations.(Steven's Universe) *She wasn't an animator for adventure time.
I truly believe out of all the list generated by Watchmojo, this is the only list that deserves a tie for first place since many fans of animation are split on the greatest, and the top two really do stand out from all the rest
While I love this guys work, I really don't think Matt Groening should be on this list. He's not technically an ANIMATOR, he's really a cartoonist. I think Don Bluth or Winsor McKay should have been on this list.
MrDrawingboard1 He was a storyboard artist when they made the shorts for The Tracey Ullman Show, but that's pretty much it. So yeah he was NEVER an animator. Neither was Walt Disney and Hanna Barbara. I mean, this list don't even know what animators are. -.-'
You could have mentioned that Iwerks was a mechanical genius. A multiplane camera was developed at Disney for thousands of 1938 dollars (first used in the short The Old Mill). Ub had built an only slightly less sophisticated one four years earlier from the rear end of an old Chevy. He returned to Disney in 1940 as an engineer and inventor, not an animator.
Brian Cosgrove and Mark Hall [Cosgrove & Hall Productions] (Danger Mouse, Count Duckula, Chorlton and the Wheelies, Rainbow, Victor & Hugo, The Wind in the Willows, Noddy, Sooty and Bill & Ben).

I think it's more accurate to say that South Park "stands out".
I thought Monty Oum deserved a honorable mention but i guess he's not iconic to some people.
So much childhood nostalgia! I grew up watching most of this stuff.
Miyazaki hates weeaboos
It's funny because it's true
Who doesn't hate weeaboos
Even weeaboos hate weeaboos
Kelvin Reyes Thats why The Suit Life of Zack and Cody will always be my number 1 anime.
Simon Huang what about cory in the house a far superior slice of life anime
No love for Walter Lantz? Woody Woodpecker, Chilly Willy anyone?
I bet there'll be a 2nd list like this b/c there are so many animators out there with talent:
Neil Cierciga (spell check on that)
Ralph Bahkshi
Osamu Tezuka
I hope Monty Oum gets on the 2nd list.
Dob bluth
John Kricfalusi should also be in Honorable Mentions. His "Ren and Stimpy Show" was anti-Disney "disasterpiece". He's like Irvin Welsh of animation.
Stephen Hillenburg should be on this list
That aged like Milk
Ralph Bakshi is, hands down, my favorite animator of all time...
"Wizards" is one of my all time favorite (animated) movies...
Sure, he made "Cool World", but at least he did "Lord of the Rings", "Heavy Traffic", "Coonskin", and "American Pop"...
I love all the ones listed, but I'll always have Bakshi with me...
I hope he gets "Last Days of Coney Island" done soon and I may bask in another Bakshi masterpiece...
I admire all of these guys for their creative and imagination.
In the Honorable Mention, I would have included Bob Clampett (Tweety Pie, Beanie & Cecil), Isidore "Friz" Freleng (Bugs Bunny, Pink Panther) and Walter Lantz (Woody Woodpecker, et al).
Need more WB guys plus honorable mentions for John Kricfalusi, Mike Judge, McFarlane and the team that created Rocko & SpongeBob.
Even tho John K is a monster, we must separate the art from the artist.
@@ericpivaral4747 That's true I don't like what John k did but Ren and Stimpy is a classic
Much like roman Polanski, what he did is horrible but you can't deny his great movies
This is actually a pretty strong list, but there are still too many people left behind from this list:
I love Max's toons my fav is Swing You Sinners
It's sad that Ralph Bakshi, Satoshi Kon and Don Bluth didn't even get an honorable mention. Those guys are legends. Either way, great list and it's awesome seeing Chuck Jones, Miyazaki and Disney at the top of the list.
Craig McCracken should of been on here
I agree
+Will Williams i love his cartoons
+Will Williams fun fact PPG wasn't made in flash it was always hand drawn the only time they used flash was in the special "Powerpuff Girls Rule"
@@williamkerfoot8039 he created The Powerpuff Girls. So Powerpuff Girl is a pop culture phenomenon.
Snivy12343 For me, Disney is the big one and more than one person mentioned him as an inspiration, a game changer.
Disney didn't do musch actual animation. He was more of a director. :)
Maximillian Pugasus He drew his own cartoons in the late 20s and early 30s. I think he did Snow White and some of those early films as well
Snivy12343 oh.
+Dragamation Just like Genndy Tartkosky but he some how made it on the list once he said i quote "I cant draw"
Obvious #1 is obvious. Happy with Miyazaki at #2 though. He was my childhood, and I love every single one he's movies. An incredible man and inspiration. :3
You missed out Seth MacFarlane
He's a cartoonist.
@@mannydiaz1483 Animator also.
Why didn't Don Bluth at least get an honorable mention? What the Hell WatchMojo!?
Joseph Lytle Dude, relax. Sometimes, it means that Watchmojo will make another top 10 list on this topic
***** Your right, as great as an animator he is, I guess he isn't iconic enough. But that dose leave it open for a top 10 underrated animators eh?
***** but yet most of his work in movies were better then walt Disney's work at times
Hayao Miayazaki is my fav! No one comes near to all the masterpieces he created
No one have answer you in 6 years.
No Ralph Bakshi, Tim Burton, or even Don Bluth? What gives?
Also M
Mamoro Hosoda. He is one of my favorite
Cool list! Stephen Hillenburg (creator of SpongeBob) would've been on this list because he has studied the ocean before working on SpongeBob. I also have biography books of Matt Groening and William Hanna and Joseph Barbera.
Walt Disney has never been a animator. He was just a good businessman.
should have known there would be a bunch of weeaboos in the comments complaining that there werent more japanese entries or miyazaki should have been first. i mean i like miyazaki but come on, when you think of animation disney always comes to mind.
Chris Green when I think of Disney thier racism against the Germans come to my mind
Master Oogway DUDE it was nazi propgranda there’s no proof Disney hated Germans.
This needs another list this list was stacked and there was still some very noticeable omissions
Anyone having issues where you can't comment on most RUclips videos
Yes
ibrahima diallo I think it's because people need to enable replies to their comments, in their Google+ profile.
Thanks
sweiland75 thanks
Yes. It says comments have been disabled. And when i checked in a browser i can see the comments.
I have a few ideas for top ten lists:
1. Top ten Thomas and Friends/ Railway Series characters
2. Top ten Thomas and Friends/ Railway Series RUclips fans
3. Top ten fictional trains
4. Top ten locomotive classes
I knew Walt Disney would be number one. Rest in piece senpai.
There's also "Bob Clampett". His style is way more bouncy and the reactions are funnier than Chuck's.
I like Miyazaki more, although Walt Disney is definitely the most iconic. By far.
That ok, But I like Both. Salt and pepper the world of animation
This is one of the few lists I completely agree with!
Walt Disney is number 1 and i haven't watched the video..second would be miyazaki
Bang on right but kinda obvoius
Love it. Some of these people changed my life!
Special thanks to our users jkellis, MrKlatez, Norris Vaughn, Jake the Dog, Bruce Callen, Spideyfan-0913, Buckybutler, rayne98, Ivan Corredera and radon548 for submitting the idea on our Suggestion Tool at www.WatchMojo.com/suggest
Da fuq what about Akira toriyama
+AHMED DWAS He's not an animator.
failing to mention Snow White? wow!
top ten most popular creepypastas including the voice of creepypasta reader and youtuber creepsmcpasta
hotel translvania and the 2nd one
I think it's time this list got updated and includes Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.
P.S. I'm glad Genndy Tartakovsky is on the list
Don Bluth? i thought he was gonna be on this for sure.
LITERALLY ALL MY FAVORITE ANIMATORS EVER HONORABLE MENTIONS SKSMSM WHAT
Ken Harris, Robert Mckimson, None of the Nine Old Men, Winsor McCay, Bill Tytla, Art Babbitt, John Kricfalusi, the list goes on of unacceptable omissions.
I belive theres a diffrence between an "animation director" and a "character/effects animator.
What about Butch Hartman and Seth MacFarlane?
butch animation wasn't that great tbh
Seth MacFarlane is my favorite animator 🤗🤗❤❤
natoshi shida?
Walt Disney started as a cartoonist and later became an animator for a brief period of time. But his role in his most succesful movies and shorts was as a producer. In my humble opinion, he is definitely one of the most iconic animators... but he probably doesn't qualify as one of the greatest.
Really dumb list because every animation needs a team of animators to make things come to life not just one person behind everything.
I prefer Hayao Miyazaki, but yeah, Disney probably had a larger cultural impact on society, oh well
I prefer Both. But Walt was without doubt the one who open the next doar
What about Mamoru Oshii or Jan Svamkmajer?
MightyQuinn2021 Two very desevered, yet very different mentions.
His clay-mation always gives me a good laugh and brings out the cheekiness in all of us :P
i think its quite bias, it only shows american animators
Why does everyone have to hate Miyazaki and love Disney or hate Disney and love Miyazaki, can't you just love both.
What about Don Bluth, Ralph Bakshi, Jan Švankmajer, Jiří Trnka - and even no honorable mention? WTF???
A list of complete inspirational geniuses. A fantastic watch, list and idea for a top 10. Thanks mojo!
KyujiRico Z. Although none of them (except 2 or 3 if them) are actual animators. This list proves that they have no idea what the hell they are talking about! A list of the greatest animators where Glen Kean isn't mentioned at all is all fucked up.
sorry, does the name Sylvain Chomet not ring a bell to you guys?
EyeOfTheLauren Right, outrageous omission they made
My favorite animators of all time are Stephen Hillenburg, Matt Groening, William Hanna, Joseph Barbera, Tex Avery, Friz Freleng and Chuck Jones

They realy put max fliescher on honorable mentions.
Good luck walking into any animation school with this list, theyll laugh at you. Popular does not mean great.
I would.
you would what?
I wouldn't
Those animators are my childhood gods
Am i the only one who thinks Futurama is better than The Simpsons?
Nope
Solarstar10 newer Simpsons yes but the first 12 seasons of the Simpsons may be the greatest show ever created, most of those episodes are unmatched by any show
Solarstar10 Totally agree, it is much better. Such a pity it has been canceled....
***** I like how they ended it off though, I don't think they will be reviveing it again sadly .....
I agree but only because Futurama is shorter if Simpsons ended at 7 seasons and got Four epic movies than I'd definitely say Simpsons.
Let me fix this list.
10. Tex Avery
9. Disney's 9 Old Men
8. Phil Tippett
7. Jim Danforth
6. Laika (the whole team)
5. Sylvian Chomet
4. Aardman (Nick Park, Peter Lord and Dave Sproxton
3. Richard Williams
2. Willis O'Brien
1. Ray Harryhausen
Henry selick and Don bluth deserve respect! Give them a place!
Ralph Bakshi and Don Bluth deserve an honorable mention.
I saw the #1 animator coming... though I think Hayao Miyazaki is the best when it comes to 2-D animation.
Both are the best, Salt and pepper of world of animation
i was at least hoping to see the late Mounty Oum in the Honorable mentions
Let me guess, Miyazaki gets #1 taken from him because Disney is more lucrative or something.
Reven344 Yep. Who woulda thought.
Reven344 Might be something to do with the videos name. "Iconic" Now remember that Disney started creating cartoons in 1930, while the other guy only did something that had already been done a million times.
Henrique Caldeira Walt Disney started creating cartoons in early 1920's, not 1930's.
He gets #1 taken, because he wouldn't deserve that spot even in 100 years. Disney is better and more iconic in every aspect. Miyazaki is not even worthy of licking Disney's feet.
Stratos Guy Kenway Okay friend.
2 people I think should've been on list or honorable mention
1. Willias O'Brian: clay mated King Kong and more
2. The person behind Jurassic Park. That needs credit
Although Stan Winston is an awesome model maker. He didn't animate the dinosaurs. I don't think CGI counts
is Rebecca Sugar an animator? She shoulda got at least a honorable mention since she's one of the few successful women on animation.
Rebecca did animate some student projects, but in the actual industry, she's only been a storyboard artist.
so she's just a creator of Steven Universe?
YoungFrankenstein Yeah, first female animator on CN in fact. But she doesn't have a deep enough file sheet to be mentioned with these animation prophets. They raised your Grandparents, Parents, and possibly your childhood as well (1910-2010). Give her 5 or 10 years when she has created more projects. She'll be on a future list, because children ranges 5-10 are growing on her animations.(Steven's Universe) *She wasn't an animator for adventure time.
Apollo Skywalker I hope they do. Steven Universe is an amazing show.
YoungFrankenstein Yes it is.
I truly believe out of all the list generated by Watchmojo, this is the only list that deserves a tie for first place since many fans of animation are split on the greatest, and the top two really do stand out from all the rest
WALT DISNEY WAS A PRODUCER NOT AN ANIMATOR!!
no, I am patrick!
And a fascist
eerrr nooop he wasnt a facist he was a business man
Wrong, look things up before you comment
+L0RDOFCATS hahahahahahaaha funny, good joke.
Where's mah boi, Don Bluth!?
And mah other boi Tim Burton!?
While I love this guys work, I really don't think Matt Groening should be on this list. He's not technically an ANIMATOR, he's really a cartoonist. I think Don Bluth or Winsor McKay should have been on this list.
MrDrawingboard1 He was a storyboard artist when they made the shorts for The Tracey Ullman Show, but that's pretty much it. So yeah he was NEVER an animator. Neither was Walt Disney and Hanna Barbara. I mean, this list don't even know what animators are. -.-'
GoldenChickenNG True!
No Don Bluth and Milt Khal?!
Really?!
Brian Cosgrove and Mark Hall [Cosgrove & Hall Productions] (Danger Mouse, Count Duckula, Chorlton and the Wheelies, Rainbow, Victor & Hugo, The Wind in the Willows, Noddy, Sooty and Bill & Ben).
Ummmmmm where is egowapter??!?!?
Egoraptor should've been #1
They have a top ten youtu we animation lists
Mike Judge should have been a honourable mention
