      TheHorsecollar well they only said they were temporarily halting production, because Miyazaki retired, which just means that they are going to spend this hiatus to find his successor... I mean "Kaguya" proved that they can still make good movies without Miyazaki, so I'm sure they aren't shutting down forever!

    ok guys, you know why the Little Mermaid is number one? BECAUSE IT DESERVES TO BE. Out of the movies on this list, the Little Mermaid has easily the most recognition from fans. You can walk into a clothing store and I grantee there's something with Little Mermaid on it. Yes it might not be the most popular with you guys, but it's definitely more popular nation wide. Stop complaining that your favorite wasn't number one, and actually think why they put the number one there.

    So basically Don Bluth, Miyazaki, and some Disney...
    It's kind of hard to argue with such a list, since those include very amazing productions. Still, some variety would have been nice; stuff like The Last Unicorn, The Wind in the Willows or some French gem like Gandahar. Some more mature forays like Rock and Rule or anything by Bakshi should have gotten an honorable mention at least.
    Can't dispute number one, that one was a game changer and set so many of the tropes still used today.
    Top Miyazaki is definitely Totoro for me as well, but followed closely by Nausicaa (honorable mention for you guys).
    Bluth for me is Secret of NIMH, which is just honorable mention, followed by All Dogs go to Heaven, which you didn't even mention.
    Overall, great list, though.

      Jay P For an animation movie, it was a very big milestone, as was Beauty and the Beast. But, Beauty is one of the most well-known cartoon movies of the 90's - something WatchMojo takes heavily into consideration. Then again, both movies are in the National Film Registry (which is kinda like the cinematic hall of fame.)

    • @EmmaBonn96
      @EmmaBonn96 9 лет назад

      Let's not forget that these are -INFLUENTIAL- films.
      While yes, Princess Mononoke proved that you could tell an adult story using animation to produce effects that would not look good live, Toy story brought 3D animated moves into the picture, which added a complete sub section to the animated movie industry.
      I love Princess Mononoke, but I think it has to be second to Toy Story.
      If it appeases the Ghiblites (I like this term) why not suggest or create a Top 10 Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli films.

    "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind" is so incredibly underrated compared to the Studio Ghibli movies (I know that it, technically, was released before the studio was created, but it is distributed today under the company logo and considered a Ghibli film). And I am sorry to Disney and "The Little Mermaid" but "Nausicaä", "Castle in the sky", "Grave of the Fireflies", "Kiki's Delivery Service" or even "My Neighbor Totoro" where more deserving of the first place (though that's just my opinion!)

      I'm not the biggest fan of The Little Mermaid, however I do believe that objectively it was FAR MORE critically and commercially acclaimed than NIMH and Totoro. The Little Mermaid is a timeless classic that everyone knows and loves, and it saved Disney from falling into the depths of despair (almost caused by its previous films), kicking off the most notable era of Disney - the renaissance era.

    • @xAcidRayne
      @xAcidRayne 9 лет назад

      No. It is the worst Disney movie. Completely forgettable, all the characters are total idiots, the villain exists only to scare children and accomplishes nothing, and the little dog thing is the most annoying creature ever created. A visually stunning film, but the story is so bad that it could never be considered a great movie.

    • @bluethunder250
      @bluethunder250 9 лет назад +1

      xAcidRayne The story is not bad. The problem is that things in it happen too fast. As for the characters, I have some that I like, Flueder is hilarious. He makes me laugh hard. And the Horned King is a little underrated, plus he has one of the best deaths in Disney film history.

    • @xAcidRayne
      @xAcidRayne 9 лет назад

      Ira Sutton And that makes it forgettable. I can't remember the significance of the witches or the fairies. Hell, I can't even remember the main character's name, and I've seen the movie several times. The heroes get caught by the Horned King, get tied up, escape, get captured AGAIN, get tied up again, and then escape again, proving his (the Horned King's) incompetence. Then, his army barely gets outside the castle before they all die. He accomplishes nothing, he just yells and screams and looks scary, and worst of all, stupid, annoying Gurgi comes back at the end.

    • @bluethunder250
      @bluethunder250 9 лет назад

      xAcidRayne Hey, regardless of how you feel about Gurgi, you have to admit, his sacrifice was brave. And the witches were pretty funny too. But I do agree that the story could've done more.

    It's an honor to see that the film I starred in made it to this countdown list.

      +RatiganRules Indeed, it is something of a comfort to see this film get some recognition.

    I loved Grave of the Fireflies so much. I recommend it to anyone even if you don't like anime.

    While I don't necessarily agree with the ranking, this is a nice list, a good mix of Western and Eastern animated films. As someone who likes and follows Japanese animation particularly Miyazaki and some of the shounen anime, I'm embarrassed with some of the close-minded comments of the anime/Ghibli fanatics here. They seem to be so absorbed with their own opinion that they forgot that the rest of the world still exists. I bet they'll be surprised that not everyone knows about Miyazaki and not all of his films get as much distribution whereas Disney is everywhere and practically a household name. There's a surprising amount of Japanese films that made it to the list and they're still not satisfied. Sigh. While I wouldn't put The Little Mermaid in my personal number 1 list, I can't deny its impact to the animation industry. And really, that's one of the things that has been taken into consideration for this list especially in the popular culture.

    The Fox and the Hound (belch) makes it and The Secret of NIHM only gets an honorable mention? I think not.

    I feel that Anime (while animated movies) should get it's own list. Seeing how WatchMojo like to divide list up even if things are pretty dam similar I am surprised they did not do it.
    Note: Secret of NIHM is one of the best animated films from the 80s but it is less watched because it seems in the early 80s that animated films were not too popular. Same can be said about The Last Unicorn
    The Flight of Dragons is another one that people kind of forget. Mind you it is not great but it is something unique for the time.
    I am also pretty sad that the 1970s did not get it's own list:The Hobbit, The Aristocats, Fritz the Cat, Snoopy, Come Home, Charlotte's Web, Robin Hood, Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid by Toei, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, Race for Your Life, Charlie Brown, The Rescuers, Wizards, The Lord of the Rings, Watership Down, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and Lupin the 3rd: The Castle of Cagliostro were just some of the animated movies released at the time.

      Actually, the problem with Secret of Nihm was that Don Bluth had trouble with the distribution. It was not shown in that many cinemas and had next to no marketing. Once word spread and the VHS release came, it became a hit.
      I agree, at least the 1970 should have gotten an own list.

    More honorable mentions (in my opinion, not necessarily successful titles):
    - All Dogs Go To Heavem
    - The Last Unicorn
    - The Plague Dogs
    - The Brave Little Toaster
    - Oliver & Company

    Kiki's Delivery Service is about a 13-year old girl who leaves home by herself to start her own business. She is incredibly sweet, listens to her parents, and always does more than she is asked. She also struggles with the very real issue of losing her passion for something she loves because she has to do it for money. In the end she overcomes those fears in order to save a human life and learns to love her work, even if she doesn't always like it that much.
    The Little Mermaid is about a 16-year old princess who has everything and wants more. Specifically, a pair of legs that can open up if needed for a stranger. She bargains with an obviously sketchy sea witch to acquire these legs, losing only her ability to communicate, and bound to be a slave if she doesn't seduce the attractive human she knows nothing about. Lo and behold, the sketchy sea witch cheats and wins, only to be stabbed to death by the princess's boyfriend. She gets everything she ever wanted and learns only to avoid making deals with sketchy sea witches.
    Kiki wins. Kiki #1.

    I'm glad I've heard someone mentioning Steven Spielberg executive producing An American Tail and The Land Before Time. The Land Before Time was also done by George Lucas.
