Unsolicited plug. I have been using Obsidian for about six months and was concerned Obsidian Flight School might be too basic for me, but I took the plunge, bought it, and after the first hour can wholeheartedly say that it was worth the price. It has a lot about the basics but teaches it in ways that I learned new things from the beginning. Thank you so much for putting the course together.

I really try to keep my plugins to a minimum, because for me a big part of using Obsidian over other apps is the “future proof” nature of markdown notes. I don’t want to have dozens of plugins that would render my notes practically unreadable if something ever happened to Obsidian. However,
there are still some plugins that I really love that work well without making my notes unreadable in another markdown editor like Notepad.
Sync is my number one favorite plugin. I used iCloud for a few months, and I always had issues with certain files (usually the workspace files) not syncing properly, so when I went on my computer and tried to copy everything to make a backup, I constantly got errors because of those problematic files. It doesn’t sound like a big deal, but it really became a royal pain after a while. Sync takes all the headache out, it’s one of those things that “just works” and once you set it up, you never have to think about it. I use Obsidian on my phone, PC and iPad, and my wife is signed in on her phone with my account as well so she can access a shared Vault.
I was surprised to see you mention Templates but not the Templater community plugin. I use Templater because it’s just literally a better version of templates. Templater lets you put code in your templates, so for example my Daily Notes template has some code that automatically puts the current date, and links to previous and future dates. That kind of thing is really useful to me for navigating between daily notes easily.
My other favorites are Dataview, Daily Notes, and a lot of the built-in stuff like backlinks and Canvas. One thing I really disagree with, is I can’t stand Live Preview mode, and whenever I make a new Vault the first thing I do is go into settings and turn it off. I just really can’t stand not seeing the code and formatting when I’m working on a note, I’m not sure why. Maybe it’s because I’m ADHD or maybe I’m just a control freak lol. Hearing you talk so highly of it, I might go back and give it another chance, but when I used Live Preview it just really messed with my head having to write in the formatting then the code disappearing when I moved to another line. I’d rather see everything when I’m editing, and use reading view when I’m not.
I think I need to boot up my test vault and try out some of the plugins you mentioned in this video, as well as giving Live Preview another chance. Most of the stuff you’ve shown seems like things that won’t really render notes “not future-proof” like I was concerned about when I first started with Obsidian, more just stuff that helps you work more smoothly.

If Obsidian didn't have nested tags, I would have never ventured from Bear. I use the nested tags heavily for all sorts of things including dates. For example at my job I may have a tag like: job/2022/01/01. That allows me to be able to filter the year, month and down to the day if need be.

The star has been useful for me.
I write a markdown syntax and starred and, when in doubt, in a blink of an eye, I found it.
I believe that, for a list of contacts this would be fine too.

ANother way to reformat numbered lists when they are out-of-order in Editing mode is to just tab one into a nested list (any of them), and untab it back. This will re-order the as listed!

Thought I heard “thinking at the speed of thought” which is an obvious statement that happens when your thinking gets ahead of your speaking 😊. Don’t recall where it was in the video but it struck me. Sorry if I misheard or it might have been another video of yours that I watched today. By the way, I really like the callout formatting you use: title with subtle color background then text underneath that on standard background in a colored outline. Cybertron is too colorful for my tastes overall though. (We all have our preferences. I’m glad it gives you joy.). Any suggested resource for creating that callout or simplified CSS for Obsidian themes? I’ve done a little programming but not for the web. Thanks again.

Obsidian has become a stunning application, and all credit to the devs and plugin/theme maintainers. Although, I don’t have it installed anymore (for the time being), I still support Obsidian and pay for my monthly sync. But can you imagine if this was a native app, or if someone did try to make something similar natively, with all the Apple guidelines etc. I would be using it immediately again…

I think nowadays Obsidian is very good without plugins because they add the open-source (but Obsidian stills closed source), maybe I only add the top 3 (advanced tables, dataview, excalidraw) + obsidian git + mindmap (but the lust update is from 2020).
One thing that Obsidian needs is improve the collaboration with teams, today the best way is using git and some git repository like GItHub, GItLab, Codeberg, etc. And be open-source.
