I have been following Nick for almost two years now; he earned my respect right from the very beginnig. A Humble, Generous and Intelligent man. But I have to say that I am also impressed with the way in which he has evolved himself; the quality of this videos, knowledge, presentation skills, enthusiasm, etc. This man is not stopping any time soon. Nick, you are inspirational; I will try to catch up with you....or at least, follow the lead.
Hear hear!
It's so good having a knowledgeable content creator who can visually story-tell!
@Oxomex (hello AC :) ), agree with everything you said.
Appreciations, Nick, for your keeping up with the key Obsidian developments and integrating these into ever refined sensemaking frameworks 🙏
They already improved it:
- Canvas: 'delete' has been renamed to 'remove' to avoid confusion.
- Canvas: cards can now be dragged by the filename label.
- Canvas: Ctrl/Command-clicking on a filename label will open that file in a new tab.
- Other plugin views should now properly respond to selecting a card in the Canvas. This includes the Outline pane, the Backlinks pane, etc.
- Templates core plugin properly inserts into the canvas editor.
- The viewport will now pan while dragging nodes close to the edge of the screen.
- Pressing Shift-enter inside the file select modal in canvas will now create a file based on your current input (same as the quick switcher behavior).
- Improved appearance of file name modal when using "Convert to file..." Canvas action.
- Increased the max zoom distance in Canvas.
Also, undo/redo keyboard shortcuts now work
"Ctrl-Z" undoes sequential changes on a canvas
Similarly, "Ctrl-Shift-Z" (and "Ctrl-Y") redoes changes that were undone
At the time of this writing (2023-01-06), here's the things that can be affected by these undo/redo shortcuts:
- creation/addition of cards/notes/media
- locations of cards/notes/media
- resizing of cards/notes/media
- creation of arrows between cards/notes/media
- content of cards (atm, changes to notes within a canvas aren't able to be undone once you exit the editing of the note)
Forgot to mention that duplicate on Windows is "Ctrl-LeftClick" and dragging a note/card/media
Just when I thought Obsidian couldn't become more useful, they introduce this. I'm a writer and Obsidian has helped me return to old projects I abandoned because I couldn't keep track of all the different threads. Canvas takes that to the next level. I can't thank you enough for your videos, they helped me tap into the insane potential of this software for linking my thinking!
I think... obsidian (like apple m2 chip) is just way ahead any note making tool in the market right now... I love obsidian community...they are amazing and dynamic people..
Wow, so much respect to the Obsidian developers. The sheer quality of the product. Thank you guys for your work!
I expect most of my work on Obsidian (or internet) will be done on a canvas, the moment I have access to v.1.1.
It combines mind mapping and the ability to use my Obsidian archives, resident on my computer and iCloud, and keep whatever I produce on canvas in my own system.
A revolutionary jump forward! Congratulations to the Obsidian developers, and to you too for the amazing presentation and divulgation effort.
Hi, how have you downloaded the 1.1 version for computer? The latest release on obsidian site is v1.0.3
@@almabrb It's only released for premium users(for now). Don't worry, soon everyone will get it too.
@@harounlee208 huh
how is it going with canvas?
I’m a few minutes in and this looks like the game changer that was needed for obsidian. This is exciting!
I agree! Very exciting :)
Just opened Obsidian to take a note and ... voilà ... the Canvas functionality is there! Took me three minutes to fall in love. It's a game-changer. Thanks for your great intro!!
Have fun!
I’ve learned so much from your beginner videos. Now, to put it into practice. With your excitement and enthusiasm, you’ve lit my blue touch paper. I’m ready to soar.
You are such a kind, gentle, and intelligent human being. I hope the universe will have amazing things in store for you.
As a neurodivergent person, this was the missing piece for me! I'm so glad I went ahead and invested in the insider build!
Thank you for the Tutorial Nick!
Fantastic video!
Glad you enjoyed the video 🙏🏼 Supporting development is a rewarding feeling, too!
Obsidian Canvas is great next step to improving the Obsidian and Linking Your Thinking tools and methods. Thank you for this early preview. I do mind maps for each think(thing) I start. Might be some interesting interactions with Excalidraw too. WOW. so exciting.
I am using Obsidian for my master studies but as a designer this opens a great new world for me! This is a great tool for moodboards.
I previously used multiple tabs and notes to organise what I was supposed to do and categorise what I needed to do into school, life, etc. Canvas has made it so much easier! I can create a timeline of my day with notes and cards reminding me about things and it feels so much more flexible to change if something comes up that I didn't know about. I can't believe that I'm only just finding out about it when it's been out for two months but I'm very glad I did.
Also did you know you can double click one of the edges of a card or note and it will automatically be resized to exactly how big it needs to be display the entire contents of the node? It's so helpful.
There are so many cool things about Canvas that it's hard for me to list all the things I like about them, but apart from what I just talked about, my second favourite aspect is using it to help me create notes. When I first think of an idea, it becomes a card. I then create more cards linked to it as the idea begins to form. Once I have enough on the topic, I can put that idea into its own fully fledged note. It's very helpful!
I love how you utilize words and how poetic you make it to be
thanks!
@@linkingyourthinking Keep up the good work! 👍
Mind maps in Obsidian- this makes me very very happy. Great work dev team!!!!
It makes me happy, too! 😀
I love how friendly you are, i watch your videos even if I have no interest in them, actually you are the reason why I downloaded and using Obsidian nowadays
How will you be using Obsidian Canvas?
As a mindmap & concepts map tool... I still can't believe what I just saw! :) That's just amazing & way beyond my expectations from Obsidian!
@Ace Snowlight Hi there! It's Instant Crush by Corbyn Kites. :)
Oh my gosh THANK YOU SO MUCH!! I feel like you just gave me an early Christmas present 🎉
Awesome! I feel that way, too 🎉
Nick, you’re amazing. Your excitement is infectious. Excellent video, you really showcased Canvas beautifully and did it justice.
Thanks so much!
Thank you for your contribution to the obsidian community! I'm still trying to figure things out and seeing how I can apply obsidian to work and and home life! Keep up the good work! Very helpful!
I've been desperate for a good mind mapper. And Bam there it is. Can't wait to work this into my work flow.
I think this is going to change the game for a lot of people! Glad to see you are excited about it 😃
I am so glad you figured this out and put up a great example! I messed around with it a little but I didn't even notice the connectors. Also, I agree with Alfredo below; the quality and presentation is getting better and better. Thanks.
You really have propelled my Obsidian understanding to the next level. And I watched many Obsidian experts on RUclips. Excellent content.
I learned about the “impossible list” yesterday. It seems like a great way of getting unstuck. Mapping it out with Canvas seems even better.
Great video, Nick! Loving the quality intro.
To each his own, I guess? I couldn’t skip the intro fast enough!
whats the impossible list about?
your tutorials with making the full use of obsidian have been amazing and upped my professional productivity to new heights so thank you for that and just when I was looking for a good board / card system, this pops up. Thank you for covering and explaining it so well.
Awesome! That’s great to hear! Glad you enjoyed the video 🙏🏼
Awesome news and awesome video! Although JSON is a different format than Markdown, it is still a text-based format that can be opened in any text rendering software (although it is definitely harder to read for the human, compared to Markdown)-since I don’t have the 1.1 version yet, I cannot comment further about their implementation and usage of JSON, but the format itself is a good direction and should keep the future-proof intentions going.
Thanks for sharing insights on JSON!
@@linkingyourthinking I don't think the promise of Obsidian was that everything would be in Markdown. I think the promise was that there would be no lock in with proprietary file formats. JSON is a text-based config file and the Obsidian profile and every Obsidian plugin uses JSON files. I don't think the canvas file will be migrated to Markdown. You can find your text in the JSON file, if you need it. I imagine the cards in canvas will mostly be used for labels, navigation, headings, etc. I think the real note taking will be the notes brought into or created in canvas. I can see a use case for cards "maturing" into notes as an idea develops. I don't see the canvas as any kind of lock-in of data.
@@TimMorris I agree 100%. JSON was a great choice since it is open and already widely used with all major languages having native support for it. This makes it so the community could easily create plugins to support this if obsidian ever decided to stop supporting it. Even if another note taking app uses a different format it'd be relatively simple to write a plugin to convert to that different format. JSON seems to be the obvious choice.
Thank you so much. Your great-great grandchildren will be so proud of you because you've contributed to furthering human knowledge. Your multiplier effect through the internet is enormous. Whatever naysayers there are, fugg them.
....I guess now I'm madly in love with a tool.....
Thanks for the preview, Nick. This is awesome! I've played around a little with mind mapping software before, but having this right in Obsidian is going to be a game-changer.
Thanks for your videos, Nick! I can't tell you how much I appreciate your help learning and utilizing Obsidian.
Glad the videos are useful! Thank you 🙏🏼
This looks amazing! I can't wait to try it.
Your videos are really well done - thanks for sharing such useful content in such an engaging and entertaining way - much appreciated.
Obsidian + Nick Milo = bliss
I'm glad you like the video 😁
Just stumbled on this channel. Quality of the content is next level. Thank you for the curated insights.
Wow, Obsidian just keeps getting better. Really hyped for this feature!
Isn't it great? I am very excited about it!
Great video, Nick. I think you showed me how to do about 175% more than I knew could be done with this new feature.
The only guy on RUclips teaching only needed thing for ideation.
I am a developer and designer and enjoying the videos.
Thnk you and glad you're enjoying the videos
Hi NIck____ I have been lost for several weeks. I just recently discovered Obsiian - about two weeks ago. I'm sure it can help me to be a better man, IF I can understand how to use it. I have watched several of your beginner videos today, and I am beginning to see a little bit about how to work with it. I am a retired Prof (Public Health). And I read widely and take many notes to stay current on medicine,, health, climate change, world events, and more. But I believe I have become more of a note-taker and less of a note-maker. I could see I was lost, and now I am beginning to feel that I am finding the way. I just want to say "thank you" to you. With deep gratitude and much respect. old joe
Great informative video as always, Nick. And just wanted to say the production values on the video make it stand out too! Looking forward to the next iteration of the Obsidian Flight School come early January!
Great video! Loved the editing. Obsidian Canvas offers so many opportunities to structure your thinking, can't wait to see what else the Obsidian team has in store!
Nick, you do a great job! Thank you for your product. Each time your video gives huge value to people for improvement of their knowledge and management of thinking flow. I wish you all the best.
Thank you for saying this. I appreciate it! 🙏🏼
Wow, that's impressive. Thanks for the video! I'm looking forward to starting to use this tool. I've been an Excalidraw plugin user. I'm excited to compare and use these different mapping tools in my workflow. Nick, as always, awesome video.
Nick, I love your videos. You got me hooked up on Obsidian a year ago. It took me forever to consolidate all my work from Google Keep, Apple notes, Evernote, G-Drive, OneDrive, into Obsidian. And now I can't wait to get the Canvas official release. Bit hesitant to get the insider builds I don't wanna destroy my setup.
That’s understandable. The wait will make the payoff even sweeter 😀!
This is what I wanted in obsidian. Looks fabulous.
Excellent. I just started with participating in the last LYT workshop. Now I am exploding in notes, great stuff, but I still need to develop the discipline to refine these new notes and get them out of my inbox, linked and organized. The CANVAS is a great tool to help me with this. Coming from extensive Mindmap use, this is super helpful !
That’s great! Being able to mind map in Obsidian is awesome!
Thanks for a great video. 10x my Canvas skills. Note that to duplicate a card in Windows - I needed to use CtrL+Alt instead of Alt
After watching your tutorial, I was inspired to use Obsidian Canvas to create a mind map for my upcoming TypeScript tutorial. Obsidian Canvas has given me a sense of creative freedom that I've never experienced before! 🚀 Thank you. 🙇♂
Finally! This is huge. Finally i can organize my thoughts and projects better without forgetting or getting lost. This suits me more than Excalidraw.
I'm excited about it too! 😀
Nick, incredible work as always. Thank you.
Nick is the best. Such a positive energy.
Thanks ☺️
TIL about holding shift+scroll to horizontally scroll. What a nifty shortcut!
My all-time favorite secret maneuver
Thank you very much! Your video is very professional! Your guide is very neat and easy to follow!
Excellent job very clear video! Thanks
Maybe you covered this and I missed it, otherwise: I just discovered I can drag a folder from the file tree onto a canvas and embed all the notes in it! Even though it's an early build, it seems like they've thought of almost everything.
Awesome. Feel your passion with Obsidian!
Great video and an excellent product feature prioritization choice from the Obsidian Team.
Such a helpful and clear video. Thank you so much 🤩
SO glad they released it pretty quickly. This thing is INSANE.
this looks like something I always wanted, incredible !
Looks great! Freemind, Freeplane, The Brain user over last 20 years. This video -- this functionality -- confirms my choice to standardize on Obsidian!
No fold/unfold?! Like Nick said, I trust these developers so surely it is in the works.
Exciting. I hope that they create markdown notes of each card and links and backlinks of the connectors, maybe customizable, so that it let's you emulate The Brain for instance, just like ExcaliBrain.
Outstanding! Thanks for sharing!
Omg I'm going to cry, mindmaping in my Obsidian?! I think I'm gonna LOVE canvas! I've slowly dropped mindmapping apps over the years and went back to pen and paper for that. Linking my Obsidian notes in a map is an insane power up! So excited!
Brilliant thanks for this. This is the missing link I have been looking for- allows me to visualise what's going on whereas previously I would get lost in the forest of notes
Great video, Nick -- I opened up Canvas yesterday and really didn't get it at first. Seemed like a cool feature, but wasn't sure of the use cases. Your video and the comments here have generated at least a dozen, like the commentator who talked about relating knowledge across bookmarks.
You are so poetic about the life impact of obsidian.
Amazing video! Becoming a fan of yours quickly!
Already looks awesome, looking forward to trying it out 😃
Thank you! It was very helpful.
Another excellent tutorial! As a long time Concept Board user it is awesome to get a pallet like this inside of Obsidian. Your content has helped me 100% migrate my business workflow into this world, and the advantages are amazing. I would also like to sincerely commend you on the quality of your video and content... Thanks :)
Love your work and style. Thank you. It's early days but I like the idea. I'm a very heavy into mindmapping. I use other tools that are far more intuitive, however, I like the idea that you can view/scroll notes as part of a node. The killer feature for me would be that the connections are backlinks and new blocks are created as notes by default. That would be amazing!
Exactly. I would skip ExcaliDraw for this. Links should be customizable, to emulate TheBrain for instance. ExcaliDraw still has the advantage that you can use your handwriting, though it's not transformed into machine typo and indexed like in OneNote or Evernote.
An awesome feature! Thanks for the video
I like the multi-purposed presentation style. Using the Canvas mind-mapping features to demonstrate the capabilities of Canvas at the same time it guides the video.
Thank you.
I’m really enjoying your channel.
That intro though 🔥 Love it, Nick - keep up the great work
I've never heard of this app and found out about it today. I'll definitely be using it for my IT certification exams. I can see this app being handy for linking concepts with commands etc.
This is exciting! What might even expand Canvas further is a fourth option to take a note (or item or node) from the graph view that would populate the canvas automatically with connections already made.
I wouldn't be surprised to see that or a plugin with that capability. The possibilities are so cool!
this is actually super useful
i love obsidian lol
I was waiting for that. This is perfect for a visual brain.
Mindmapping + personal wiki functionality. That's pretty much me sorted as far as I can tell. Very very cool.
I agree! Canvas is exciting!
I once again am going to be able to reduce ‘other’ applications (x-mind) and combine them into Obsidian! So happy.
OMG this will be a game-changer for me! Thank you for sharing this!!!
This is insane!
But also - very easy and cool
Wonderful opening in this video. First rate production.
Thank you!!
I know this video is a year old but my god. It’s gorgeous.
👋👋👋 Bravo, Nick!
I think it would be super awesome if you can link other canvas to the canvas. super helpful
Man.. that was an epic intro. New subscriber here, thank you for the great content Nick.
Obsidian has changed and improved my workflow once again. Thanks so much Nick. I'm so stoked to dive into Canvas. It will eliminate at least one paid app I'm currently using, which is not future proofed. 😎
This is exciting!
So glad you made a video on this--a friend sent it to me and I just upgraded so I can get access. I'm using Canvases to map out my 2023 as I try to make realistic but ambitious goals. Thanks for breaking it down for us!
What a cool excuse to upgrade😀 I hope you enjoy Canvas as much as I am!
@@linkingyourthinking Thank you. :D Loving it so far!
Will use it to write articles, thanks
They could embed the JSON in a markdown similar to how the Excalidraw plugin solves the problem
Excellent! I have been streaming obsidian during my groups book clubs and while the hyperlinks are great I am looking forward to presenting them with a canvas of the books and related media that has come up as a big picture look at our progress!
Thanks mate such a useful video! I immediately went and got Catalyst to use Canvas.
Nice! Have fun!
This looks awesome. Thought of using it as a daily workspace (like a replacement for daily note). Having my tasks, notes, jots, calendar, visually all togheter.
That sounds like a great way to use Canvas!
This reminds me a lot on how I used to use paper notes written out from books. I used to write notes in little 5 cm index cards (with page numbers on them ofc), then put them on my desk top and rearrange them, for example to find red strings moving through the book.
With a few more features Canvas can be that, but much better. I really want a plugin or feature that goes 'write current connections to notes', which replicates your canvas structure by auto-pasting backlinks into the relevant notes! This was basically the only remaining problem in using Obsidian as a Zettelkasten, instead of a physical one.
I'd use it like I used MindMeister in 2017. I still have those mind maps, from a job search to IT software solutions. Always wanted them integrated with my knowledge base which was OneNote. Thanks for the awesome demo! Your video production is top notch.
This is brilliant, Nick. More than anything I've seen yet, this seems to be the *killer app* that will bring the newbies to Obsidian.
A few things that'd be on my wish list for the future:
> Card stacks - stacks of like items where you can pick one by clicking on its edge, or iterate through them somehow.
> Card groups - where you can draw a box (or arbitrary shape) around a cluster of cards.
> Addressability - where each card and even group can have its own address, and can be seached for separately.
> Add'l graphics would be great.
> I'd also love to see some 3D effects, like drop shadows.
> And how about colors?
Really enjoyed your amazing video. I know alot of work and care went into it.
All of the items on your wish list sound great!
