The only time a group interview happened to me, I walked into the conference room to see 6 people, besides the hiring manager. I was very nervous, so I introduced myself and then said....the reason I called this meeting...laughter ensued and I was hired for the position. Was there over 6 years until the headquarters was moved and I chose not to move.
I was in a group interview once, and yes, it was very unnerving. Yes, i did get the job, but it was not because i was skilled at it. They just needed to hire some one for it. As far as the group interview went, after i took a deep breath and began to answer the questions they posed (they were not brutal, this was just a government job) it was not hard. I was able to be honest (with nuance), and i encourage any one in an interview to be as honest as you can, don't lie, but choose for yourself how you present your background. You may be living in a moment where you think all of your past is a suck failure. This is not true. Re-examine it. Piece it together into the good things you have to offer :)
Stand up when new people enter the room, bring a notebook with a lot of notes about the company history and products. Take more notes while people are talking, this WORKS every time.
Been watching the videos and gaining confidence as I go. Three interviews in 3 weeks. Two job offers! Makes a huge difference to be prepared. Don is the best encourager for job searchers!!! Thank you, Don!
Im 42 and re-entering the workforce after a 12 year break from being a stay at home mom. I was great at in person interviews because i had a great hand shake, eye contact and a very upbeat, can-do attitude. Now im about to have my first online interview to work from home. I feel confident but i hope that my personality comes through the online connection and hope that my face doesnt freeze in an embarrassing position.
I was watching this channel one year ago when I was preparing to many job interviews and it helped me a lot. I got satisfying job Right now it is nice to review this content and mention that time.
Don, I have to extend my gratitude for all your help. You were my #1 support in prepping for my interview. Spent many breakfast and dinners absorbing your advice. Towards the end of my interview the hiring manager was essentially asking how fast can I start. Thank you for the value you continue to provide here with all the content. You are so appreciated!!
Watched a couple of Don's videos before my interviews & it helped me a lot to feel more confident. I did end up getting the job I wanted soon to start. 😁
Three applications., two interviews and two new job offers.. Dom, amazing and so right on the money and advice you provide.. I’m taking a new opportunity in teaching in a college environment..
Great video! It really helped me to introduce myself in a group interview. I was confused before whether to great them one by one or once in overall. Thank you so much sir!😊
I had this in every interview, it was initially hard to introduce myself, I feel like I goes on too long because I basically summarize my education, experience and why it led me to the job opportunity.
Thanks for all your help! Your videos are great for anybody trying to get themselves in the right headspace for this weird human dance we call interviews
Absolutely, thank you. Great insight. Your value to us seeking work and understanding the process is invaluable. So true to make sure you do your homework, show how you have passion for what your after, understand the values of the company, what you bring to the position, and how you will meld to create a positive growth in the position is great advice.
Love the content man. I've found myself back here a few different times over the years which has been very helpful. Subscribing this time around. Thank you...
Hi Don, I have an odd question. What do you answer for accomplishments if you don't really have any to brag about. What if you've been in an industry you weren't passionate about and just kind of coasted?
This video was very helpful for my up and coming interview as this is a new function that I have not used before. Thank you for your guidance. Have a wonderful week. L. JONES
Most laptops and desktops support Bluetooth headphones. I use some inexpensive wireless earbuds. They're small and don't distract. You can hear clearly .Good stuff
I cannot overstate how invaluable your information is, Don. Out of curiosity how different is the interview process in nonprofits versus for profit companies? Or is the interview process basically identical company to company?
Thanks Don nice youtube🥳. From a design/film perspective, when making a zoom call, don't have a blurred background that the computer has to calculate. It takes visual attention away from you when the edge around you is constantly flipping. Don't choose a monochromatic background - it can make it seem claustrophobic, instead, like Don here, choose a background you've come up with yourself (Don just gets a RUclips plate in and blackboard with a slogan - in this way he sneaks in a bit of history about himself without being obtrusive) But it can also be something that creates a little depth in your background. But naturally avoid laundry or a messy table.
8:08 "The only reason you're still here is because I made a great first impression introducing this video..." Not true! It's because you made a great first impression with the last video of yours that I saw and I know you're legit!
Thank you very much for this video. It was very helpful, but I can’t avoid that when I look to you, you remember me Walter White from breaking bad saga 😂❤️ very helpful
Yes I have one of those interviews now and it's very awkward talking to yourself like a crazy person. Idk how Don and other RUclipsrs do it. It's very strange not getting feedback from a real person in real time.
The last interview I had I was told I was meeting one person , it ended up being two instead and it put me off the interview. In the end I didn’t get the job! Plus I was asked at the end of the interview do you have any questions for us and said no! Part of me knows why I don’t get the job!
Hi Don, I like your videos. You make some very good suggestions. For skype interviews, I am always very conscience about my background setting. I prefer a real and very tidy office-like background. Messy backgrounds or weird fake backgrounds can really affect first impressions I think....
Thanks a million Don! How about when you are already doing the job as a consultant and a permanent position opens up. How to make sure I am selling myself as not only an internal candidate but a candidate that knows the job. Secondly, how to use the star method for a program that just begun and does not have the R part yet?
Went on an interview and thought it went well. I sent a thank you note to the gentlemen and included who I thought was his wife Kate. In thank you I said it was a pleasure meeting you and kate. Woke up this morning and thought OMG was her name kate. How do I address it. When I follow up Monday should I ask about if I had the name wrong?
Can you do a video on the rare occasion that you are talking to an HR person, but you don't know what role you are applying for because they are trying to fit you to a role?
Serious question - do you have any tips on how to avoid speaking loudly with a headset on? A lot of people are doing remote call center jobs and may be annoying the heck out of people in their house haha. Thank you!
Do series teaching hiring managers how to interview candidates. So many shitty interviews that I can't tell if I'm the problem or the interviewer. Odd questions, bad form or style, overly formal and uptight...
Actually, i have several questions on that topic, plus a brand new book called "The Seven Master Steps to Hiring A Players" it teaches managers how to properly interview questions. You can check it out on Amazon: www.amazon.com/Seven-Master-Steps-Hiring-Players/dp/1737401703/
Are there any videos on how to reschedule an interview when sick or how much coughing would be acceptable at an interview? I am concerned my answers will not be clear and I will be taking too much time if needing to cough.
I am an Administrative Assistant at a hospice house. After losing my sister to hospice, it is emotionally challenging. Since I began working there I have become dependent on a rollator walker. I went for an interview at another hospital. When the hiring manager walked in for the second half of the interview, she looked at my walker and said, "do you really need to use that thing?" I felt so humiliated and offended. After I went home I sent an email withdrawing my application. I have been afraid of going on interviews ever since. Is "oh good grief" going to be my first impression on people? It can be an awkward thing to have around. It does not fold up flat like a regular walker. My coworkers are used to it and move it around as needed if it gets in their way, but still keep it in my reach.
however they introduce themselves to you. most always first name. I've only ever had one guy who introduced himself to me as Mr. Jones. But he had ego problems.
Why does EVERY fu(king job seem to require salesmanship skills? 🤦♂️ I don't have them and I don't want them. I truly HATE talking to people, but I often make efforts to try and get along with them. But if that's what the job is, I'd rather just be honest about rather than trying to live a LIE. I'd rather be unemployed than TALKING to people all day, or pretending I care about their bullshit job.
not salesmanship, but influence. to get hired anywhere, you need to influence them. don't lie, because that would be deceitful, and when you're trying to build rapport to influence someone, you'll destroy that with lies.
The employer may wants to make you slave on plantation. I defended as hard as I could, but still there was attack after attack from operations manager. After 12 years he quit expressing publicly his frustration that I didn't want to speak with him under the counter.
Doesn't matter how do you present yourself and what knowledge you have, etc. What matters is what is written in a certain database about you. A database which every and each employer consults to take a decision. Without it, they are completely in the woods. They cannot decide at all. They too dumb for that. It happen to me 3 times to get refused only after they went in the other room to look on that database about me. Do you think it recruiters know anything about IT ? It never happened to me.
The biggest problem was not microphone (I used AirPod Pro that was excellent) but the network condition: The quality of connection between S. Korea and Germany is not good. I heard that the internet speed and its stability in Germany is not good.
There are too many assumptions here. Firstly, that everyone drives to an interview. Try arriving by public transport..especially if rainy or snowy.. Secondly, that everyone can afford expensive technology. Thirdly, that you are going for a high-powered job...
yes, i have to make assumptions when I create videos and I try to be as broad as i can, but as with all my videos, they will not work for everyone all the time
your videos are very educational & info rich however moving & swinging your arms and hands with every little word that comes out of your mouth it just doesn't look natural you are over doing this to the point it is distracting from the value of your videos visually tired following the direction of your arms & hand..

Words control the world.
This guy understands them enough that he makes his living explaining that to us.
Liked and sub'd. Thx for the upload.

Don, asking again for a series on how to make the right hires (outsourced or in-house) and on how to network! More important than ever!

Hey Don! Im a 16 year old looking for jobs what tips do you have for people that are going in for their first job.
I haven’t been on an interview since!
I am an Administrative Assistant at a hospice house. After losing my sister to hospice, it is emotionally challenging. Since I began working there I have become dependent on a rollator walker. Clearly a place you wouldn’t want to work ! Keep your chin up
Look directly into the webcam when speaking and the video when listening
Can you give some example when you say that you talk about yourself
What is name/type of your headset
"Take your exes off your goals."

Disagree on the no-selling during phone interview. If you don't sell at a phone interview, they will go with someone who did.
The biggest problem was not microphone (I used AirPod Pro that was excellent) but the network condition: The quality of connection between S. Korea and Germany is not good. I heard that the internet speed and its stability in Germany is not good.
