- So how much does it cost to get my Tesla fixed (hail stone dents in the hood and broken charge port door)? And what’s going on with my wheel now?
Below is the vlog post where I first noticed the dents and break the charge port door!

Title: "HOW much to fix my Tesla?" Actually fixing flat tyre. Video painful to watch.
Fix actually relates to hail stone dents and broken charge port door, not flat tyre. It's just that bad luck tends to come in threes, or so I'm told.
Sharing open and honest. much appreciation :)
A grown middle aged man on a skateboard alone was well worth the visit, hilarious 😂
I should be out cutting the grass right now but I'm sitting here watching this stupid crap instead.
That reminds me, I need to cut my grass too... cheers.
meh just leave it long enough and the winter will kill it back. protip!
Make a 1hr long movie about cutting your grass and upload to youtube too. It is going to be as interesting as this masterpiece!
Baba Yaga Great idea ! I'll title the video "Really Hot Girl Looses Her Bikini " in order to trick people into clicking on it.
Landyacht you are correct.
lots of dramma for a flat
Hahahaha "aerodynamic improvements" hilarious lol.
I wouldn't worry about the dents if they don't notice too much. You'll get it fixed, park under a tree and a conker will drop on it.
I'm glad you were wearing your happy glasses - even though the info you were given from TESLA was less than happy. Plus a flat tyre!?! Well done, happy glasses. Keep James in a good mood.
I like the positive outlook 8-) what can I say
On RWD Model S, you can fit a spare in the frunk, if you are really bothered. But the situation is no worse than an 911.
Loving the vlog, love the Tesla. Although my questions is about the pumps you're wearing on the board? At about 2:20 onward the grey slip-ons? What make are they? Love 'em, I want a pair! (and you have the exact same phone coz as I was writing this your phone rang in the vid and I jumped up and only then realised it was on the TV, hahahaha)
I think they are Crocs. Great shoes, very comfortable.
Save 8 minutes of your life, £15.
You're welcome.
You forgot the hail stone dents (golf ball sized hail stones) £800 and charge port door £150.
Ps the flat isn't really the fix mentioned in the title.
@james you forgot that we didnt SEE any of it.
Run down of what needs fixing (you get to see it)

Love your vlogs!
Why don't you try one of the numerous mobile dent specialists? They'll be someone local no doubt. As the paint is still intact they should be able to make the dents look way better. I've always been pleased with the results vs the cost (ie Cheaper than a body shop by miles). They once did a massive dent on the wheel arch of my wife's car and you can't tell it was ever there.
it sounds like the aluminum is much harder to repair.. when it is dented the dent becomes stronger than the area around and when you go to pull it out.. you pull out the area around it.. so I am guessing to get it flat is a difficult proposition and because they say that they would use filler, primer and repaint, I am guessing that they really don't know how to pull out the dents. But... there must be a way! Sounds like a project for a future vlog post.. finding a specialist in aluminum .. have them do one dent and see how it works out!
Run flat tyres dude! Less dodgy than a space-saver! The solution for most transport is a bicycle! Car tyres also make great roofing tiles.
I sense a Casey Neistat influence
Got to admit, I'm a big fan of his work. ;-)
James Cooke Nothing wrong with that, continue your work.
There is a puncture tyre repair kit on eBay for a £5 that works a treat and every driver can use it, all you need is a small air compressor that plugs into your car lighting port, that's all no drama. Btw the town your was filming looks so pretty.
I had a puncture repaired a few days ago. All due to a screw that was lost or not disposed of carefully! If the puncture was too close to the edge, it would have been a new tyre. As others have said, there are specialists who could fix the dents cheaper and do a good job on it. Or as you said, live with it.
I would definitely try a mobile dent removal company before paying that much. They normally charge around £70 per dent and the repair does not need fibreglass and repainting.
Their normal charge is probably not for thin aluminium.
Good thing you noticed your puncture in the nick of time. And it is nice that it was easy to fix too. I watched an American couple's Tesla video wherein they got a puncture but the tyre shop couldn't fix it because it had a silent strip of some sort. It was a Tesla X by the way.
Yeah, if you can't drive on it, then things get a lot more inconvenient.
a flat tyre consists of a car being fixed? fuck im a mechanic who can fix teslas now?! :O
+Jigsjigz no, it needing fixing because of the golf ball sized hail stones that dented the hood and the idiot owner who broke the charge door by walking into it :-(
The flat was just bad luck that happened on the morning I was finding out how much the other repairs would cost.
i got a roofing nail in my tire a while back and less than 5 bucks at walmart i got a plug kiti just yanked out the nail, put rubber cement on the plug and used the little needle tool to cram it in the hole, pulled it out and drove on it, and it still holds air. you should buy a repair kit and keep it in the glove box even if you carry a spare tire its way easyer than changing a tire on the side of the road
Thanks for the suggestion. Certainly sounds easier and cheaper than having to call a tow truck, which is what would have happened if the tyre had no longer held air.
So many new cars don't have spare tyres. I had a flat in my VW Golf on the Autobahn and the can of fix-a-flat didn't do anything. Good thing I had ADAC (AA in UK & AAA in US).
hey James. I heard a radio advert for the Jaguar XE today that mentioned it's aluminium construction done a bit of reading and it seems the body panels are aluminium too. maybe worth finding a body shop that has experience of Jags as they will be used to working on high end aluminium panels. Just a thought. Cheers for the great videos
Thanks, good suggestion.
For now though I think I'm just going to live with them, after all they aren't that noticeable and I lack the finances at the moment to do anything about something so cosmetic. :-(
Try dentmaster for the dents on the bonnet, as long as the paint isn't damaged it should cost under 100 quid (depending how many there are of course)
That's going to be the route I'll take I think. The only slight annoyance is that they'll have to remove and then refit the inner liner that seals the frunk. I wouldn't want them to mess this up or water would get in and damage whatever luggage is kept in there.
I think the problem with old tyres are that the people who do recycling can't see the potential profit in recycling them. But tyres have such properties that can be so useful if only they were recycled, some of the uses you have mentioned but also they could be ground down and used for shoe soles, many shoes use plastic soles a rubber sole is better, a long lasting rubber sole is even better, this is only one such use for them but there are potentially lots of other uses, they just need to see the potential because it could be worth a lot of money.Just out of curiosity with regard to your puncture, have you never considered purchasing the stop and go system for your flats, very easy to use and very fast, once you locate the puncture it takes around 10 minutes all told to do the job, they recommend up to 50 mph for safety but it would give you plenty of time to get your puncture done at your convenience, for the price it's well worth the money and you won't ever get stranded so long as you have a pump of course.
I keep a kit for that sort of thing in the trunk of my taxi. takes more time to find the puncture than it does to fix it. It's very easy to fix.
Any chance your daily blogs could numbered in the title. I went looking for this vid and I think I got 140 instead of 119,120,and 121 of the tesla saga.
Thanks
Many new cars no longer include a spare. You can always get one and carry it with you. Many of my friends have done that. Many cars also have free road side assistance.
What does "Jack mode" do to the air suspension? Does it lift the tire off of the ground, like in the Citroens?
It stops the suspension trying to level the car when the jack lifts the wheel up, preventing damage.
Thank you, Elliott
I barely use the brakes in my manual trans I'm sure you use them even less with regen. Have you seen that Audi is planning using the suspension to generate power in their hybrid? Screws in tires are terrible, I think we really need to go to the airless tires.. can't wait till they have that technology sorted. And we all need boosted boards!
I hear you on the boosted boards (and the airless tyres too). Interesting concept using suspension to generate power, I wouldn't have thought there would be much energy recouped that way though.
They said a new road only generated around 6 watts while a typical road generated between 100 and 150 watts and a really bad road was about 600 watts.
www.allaboutcircuits.com/news/audi-prototypes-regenerative-suspension-on-hybrid-vehicles/
This brings up an interesting question. How WOULD ONE GET A TESLA FIXED/SERVICED?!
If you have a protected no claims discount it might work out better just paying the excess, I did this awhile back on what would have been an expensive respray job, it's what the protection is there for and doesn't affect your premium when the insurance comes up for renewal.
That's one of the options, I'm going to take a while and think through what I want to do with it.
Silly question but when I go on read trips I actually enjoy not pushing on as much as most, I'm happy in the highlands when the roads a empty to sit at 60mph which is the speed limit anyway but also just to get good fuel return as well. My mini coop quite happily returns 50-60mpg on a few hundred mile trip if I take it easy. The old thinking is as close to 55mph the better for economy. How does this play out with a EV? Is there a eco speed or is it just not harsh acceleration and braking keep you using as much juice out the battery.
Oh aye dents just add character you now have a one of a kind👍plus these ninja hail stones however freak could just happen again after you get it fixed. Friend got his car completely resprayed and detailed for a driving holiday, he wish he'd waited till after it as it came back like someone had machine gunned it with stone chips and a chunk out his screen from trying to keep up with the car in front too close. He got mates rates but it was like £1200 down the drain within a week or two.
The most efficient speed for an EV is a LOT lower than it is for a ICE. I think for most EVs it is around 12-15mph, so basically the slower the better. Obviously that isn't a sensible speed to drive on the motorway, so the speed of the slowest other vehicle is usually a good bet. I quite agree, taking it easy on motorways is much more relaxing and less tiring, especially when you don't have autopilot.
In the US they are using old tires in roads, play grounds and other building materials.
if you come to the Gatwick Tesla branch give me a shout and I'll give you a skateboarding lesson at the local park, and buy you a coffee of course.
Dude, those are some mad skills! (Just watched your 2015 Instagram Mashup vid). If I end up going to Gatwick and there is enough time, I'll drop you a message through RUclips. Cheers
Hope you soon get all the bits sorted, these things are a pain. I have heard that the dent and scratch companies are good and a lot cheaper. ..... interesting thanks James.
Are you going to LCV Cenex 14/15th September ?
I'll hopefully be there on the 14th.
+James Cooke , I'm going on the fifteenth, shame, could have bought you a coffee :)
Tesla drivers don't pay London's congestion charge, right? I always thought that saving £8 a day really a lot of adds value to owning a Tesla in the U.K.
I think it is actually £12 a day currently!
Oh and you get free parking in Westminster (the very central part of London).
Range extending dents...nice! (patent pending)
A screw or nail in a tire usually can be easily repaired for a few pennies yourself. Look for a tire plug kit online or at any car parts store. Also try to keep all oils, grease, etc., including finger oils off disk rotors. Any oil on the rotors, pads, drums, shoes, etc., degrades the performance of the brakes.
I don't think my brakes get much use anyway, but I'll try to remember your tip, cheers.
James Cooke While it's true that brakes on an EV do less work overall thanks to regenerative braking, the brakes are still used. For example, they're used to make a complete stop, or whenever more braking force is needed than the motor(s) can provide, such as during an emergency stop. You definitely want them to perform well then.
Hi James. Since the GBP has dropped compared to the USD, paying more for Tesla anything is gonna start to be felt in the near future. Model 3 for £30,000 is looking less likely. It will interesting to see what happens. A friend of my who owned a Mercedes S500 here in Los Angeles received a quote from a MB dealer of $800 to replace his shifter knob. Dealer + Luxury = EXPENSIVE repairs.
That's definitely true! At least the fuel is cheap though, no need to put premium in. ;-)
On the motorcycle.. we jam out the screw... force in a file-thingie... rough it up and press in a needle-type-thingie with a rubberplug drenched in a glue-kind-stuffie... done..
Mirror-glasses indoors is a bit weird...
About the flat... They should teach us in school how to fix one.. I took my tire to a friend who is a mechanic, and he let me watch him fix it.. It's so easy... I have the kit ($15) that can fix 6 flats.. Honestly they should teach us in high school..
No spare in a Tesla.... seriously, not even the fix-a-flat in a can?
I think that might be optional extra!
(the fix-a-flat in a can)
James Cooke - Scary there isn't a way to change to a spare or have another option.
Two weeks into ownership a bamboo skewer took out my rear 265/35/21.
Tesla came, took the wheel away and a few days later returned it £365 quid later
21" wheels? Yep they aren't going to be cheap unfortunately. It is kind of annoying that cars don't often come with spares anymore, limits your options when it comes to punctures. I was luck that I could still drive on mine, otherwise it would have been a lot more.
why dsnt it shows which particular tire?
James, you need to cover your car head to toe in dents, cos a golf ball with dimples goes much farther than a smooth ball ps. tesla are taking the *iss with your quote. regards Les
Thanks for the tip, I'll try to find some more freak hail storms ;-)
Oh dear me. I would like to say it's a surprise but any main dealer usually goes for the throat for repairs. Have a look at PDR (paintless dent removal) firms with decent ratings. You can probably 1/4 that quote.
Seems to me that there is some sort of liquid nitrogen dent removal technique. I don't know. Boosted boards are pretty cool. If I wasn't so ancient I would be tempted. You should buy and try one and tell us how hard it is to learn.
As soon as I get one (which will be a while, don't worry Soph) it'll definitely get it's own special edition.
Wow! A RUclips Channel! How did you get it?
James what country do you live in ? I am hearing some different currency
I'm in the South East of England.
the U.K. is a good country , one of many conflicts/problems in the world is all political-corrupt leaders.all the best to you in your videos.
Don't worry about the dents, its more areo. Just like golf balls!
You're kidding? It's a flat tire. People drive cars everyday, you'd think they would have a rudimentary knowledge of the basics. How do you drive a car everyday and not know how to fix a flat? I carry a small pump and repair kit in my car, simply ridiculous some people's inability to function in the world.
Your Tesla's not broken, you are!
John Jackson,
I didn't have to, his angst and how he carried on about the flat was more than enough for me!
I'd guess about 15 quid. How much is that converted to freedom units?
If you have a flat then swap one of your winter rims to use as a spare to get u to the shops
another likes to hear himself talk video.
Golf ball size hail and only 3 dents on my Tesla hood!Point them out as a badge of honor.
Wow, in the US you can get a flat fixed in about 30 min. Hopefully you got it patched rather than plugged.
James, have you searched for 'paintless dent removal'? I've used guys that do that and they are excellent, and significantly cheaper than the £800 you've been quoted. I assume the bonnet is aluminium, I find know how different that is from steel, but I can't imagine it being that different, it's not quite as elastic (in the physics sense) but worth a few phonecalls.
Aluminium might not be quite as easy to massage as steel (even though it is softer in most cases) once the material is stretched in a dent it's harder to bend back in shape. Though the tesla repair seems to at least add some reinforcement which tbh should have been there from the factory. But for 800... yikes
tyres are not a waste...turned into tiles for roof building homes...most tyres are recycled
not anymore! introducing SOLAR ROOFS!!!
£800+ VAT for a bonnet repair!
Premium car, premium price (ouch)
Tire repair kits cost pocket change to a poor man. There's no storage pocket in your car where it would take so little room as to seem like it's not there. Some countries, where I live anyway, all tire shops repair tires at no charge now. It used to cost < 10 USD per when they did charge. There are even tow companies and other road side services that will come to your location to do it.
£15! Most punture repairs are £10
nice vid though! Well done on skateboarding on that pavement
a simple tire plug kit would have fixed that flat easily at ya house for only a few pounds
You sound like Niklaus Mikaelson from The Vampire Diaries and The Originals.
-Thanks a good thing.
Haha, cool!
ELON MUSK I THOUGHT THE TESLA WAS PERFECT but not even a doughnut !!!!!?
Call dent pro... not all dents require a body shop, some can be massaged out by a professional for a fraction of the price and you won't be able to tell they were ever there...
This is why I always pick up any nails or screws I find on the roadside and file them in my "miscellaneous DIY stuff" drawer (or chuck 'em in a bin if they're rusty). If everyone does the same we're all keeping an eye out for each other!
Can't you just glue the broken bit of reflector back on BTW?
Some of it feel into the car, so I can't get at all of it, at least at the moment the missing bit is sort of in a strip.
I always do the same (pick up screws), having to throw perfectly good tyres away because of a puncture is just such a WASTE.
What about finding a company that specialise in aluminium body repairs, then do a video promoting their service to Tesla owners, hopefully they would do your repair in the video as a freebie, this would be really interesting.
Now that's a good idea ;-)
Dude my goodyear RSA tires used to deflate all the time. They are trash! In my opinion stick with toyo or Michelin :)
I got my Tesla's flat tire fixed at Costco for $10.99 and didn't feel the need to post a video.
Are you aware that there is a nice wooden mini ramp a couple of hundred metres down the road from where you were?
It's outside the youth centre.
Ramps + Me + Penny board + Camera = Pain + Cost (unfortunately)
Did you have to show the tire store how to jack your car?
No, but I did have to tell them the tyre pressure (the car was locked) and the wheel nut torque required (more than normal).
What exactly is "jack mode"?
The car has air suspension, so if you don't put it in "jack mode" then it will try to self-level while you jack it up and the shift in weight could cause the car to fall from the jack. At least that's what I understand it to be.
James Cooke I wouldn't think that would work with the engine off, and you'd have a spare on or new tire by then. I agree, I'm in Alaska and I think it's very dodgy not have a spare
The Tesla is always on, so to speak. An ICE vehicle however probably wouldn't need the jack mode, as you say. My wife's Merc has one of those slimmed down spares, recently it proved very handy. I don't see why they can't be fitted in a Tesla somewhere. Even if you don't change the wheel yourself (many people probably couldn't lift a wheel to be honest), however the AA man can and he doesn't usually carry spare Tesla spec tyres.
ITS NOT A SKATEBOAARRRRDDDDD. ITS A FUCKING PENNYBOOAAAARRRDDDD.
Yeah I know, but they both have four wheels and you stand on them.
tires can be gasified back to oil.
120 for a reflector? that can't be right. I know tesla say they don't want to make a profit on service but at the same time, the local crash repair guy would knock those dents out and put a new reflector on for 50 quid. I'm getting my fermec 860 backhoe loader sandblasted and fully repainted with a small bit of panel replacement for 1000 euro and the guy doing it is still making fierce money on it. Make what you will of that
I have a feeling that it's a "whole new charge port door, probably with a taking the whole panel off to get at it", type of thing! We'll see...
I suppose for a whole new door, it isn't all that bad. They probably wouldn't have just reflectors on they're own once you think about it
state of the art car,....no spare tire.....Hmmm..... must be an option.....ahhh these little things we never think about, until we need them.
get a PDR kit and do it your self or find some one around you that does that type of work ... and your car is fixed 100% new for 100$ USD
if you burn tires hot enough they are like plastic and burn quite cleanly
I didn't know that, but I think I remember a power station somewhere that burns tyres as part of its fuel.
i think there is one either in argentina or in hawaii
800 quid sounds like buy-a-new-bonnet time. And they can't overcharge for the MOT, it's capped by law ;) They can UNDERcharge...
I didn't know MOT prices where capped by law, that's awesome!
James Cooke cool isn't it! One of the few things I'm grateful to the government for doing for us regular motorists...
More info: gov.uk
mate, if you look carefully in your camera - you will spot a 'zoom out' button. USE IT. 8 mins of your face was a bit too much of '...in your face' if you know what I mean. Otherwise all good.
Take it to a garage I'm sure they could knock the dents out for less than £800, probably won't be like new but still better
I seriously considering it...
James, if you fancy a drive to the midlands I can put you in touch with a PDR technician who would fix your dinks for a fraction of what Tesla want.
Midlands might be a little far for me, but that thanks for the offer.
Steve Wozniak is trading his Tesla Model S for a Chevy Bolt when it comes out. I think he is still mad at Musk for calling him out on his CO2 footprint. LOL
I just made business cards for my channel and it sure didn't help me getting interviews or access to special EV events or anything for that matter. They just look at it and kind of chuckle. Of course, it may be helpful if I had more than 500 subscribers as well. ;-)
Steve Wozniak didn't say he would chop his Tesla for a Bolt, just that he prefers the new Bolt. I think he's a longstanding GM guy, has advertised for them and likes shiny bright new toys. As it sits higher and is easier for the , erm larger man to get in/out of it kinda makes sense. The Bolt could well be a great EV.
He can easily afford both, but the Bolt won't be as easy to live with on longer journeys!
Interesting should take 15 minutes max to fix the tire just patch it. I fixed and replaced tires for 10 years
I'm starting to think more steel in model 3 may not be such a bad thing
Definitely not a bad thing IMO.
FYI the Nissan Leaf Gen 1 has a aluminium bonnet and doors. I'm hoping we don't any hail like that....
I'd recommend a QR code on the business card for the youtube url/website
I like it, good idea.
This is just me, but I'd live with the dents if they didn't decrease my range more than a few miles. A big honkin' tear of the skin, sure, but dents? Most cars that are more than 6 months old have a dent or two.
Seems like pretty standard cost for bod work
Have you tried a local dent magician?
I'm going to do some research on other dent fixers I think.
what is "Jack mode" ????
BisMaxx Im not 100% but I think they have locking pins in the brakes so no wheel can turn and the car can be jacked up safely even on
a small hill
I think it is actually related primarily to the air suspension, it stops the car from trying to auto-level, which it would otherwise do. The shift in weight could then cause the car to come off the jack. You may also be correct about the breaks, but I don't know.
BisMaxx did not think of the air ride
Very interesting, I did not think of that. I thought the car may have a built in jack stand that is hydraulically actuated from under the car as seen on the picture.... Very cool!
you are max
You should get an evolve skateboard
I looked at getting an evolve, but I don't think they go all that fast (not that I'd go particularly quick on one, but you never know).
James Cooke The new evolve skateboards are faster than the boosted boards and they have a lot better range.
Hail damage, leave it, it'll get hailed on again. Leave it until you sell the car, why not go through insurance unless you have stupid high excess payment to claim.
Here get this set for the back of your car so if u get a flat again u can fix it on your own www.amazon.co.uk/XtremeAuto®-TYRE-PUNCTURE-REPAIR-STRIPS/dp/B004JFZGRO/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1478381323&sr=8-3&keywords=flat+tyre+repair+kit
OMG A Grown man riding a skateboard.......... that was enough
tire recapping. A pretty far far thing from a new idea though.
wow. a $20.00 cord kit and you would have had none of this.
when your dad tries to be like the vloggers... cringe
It's all a learning process, keep watching you'll see me getting better and better.
James Cooke ig your right, and btw I love the tesla
James Cooke ahaha, I really clicked on the video, cuz there was an Tesla and kinda interesting, like 90% for the Tesla and the other 10% of the video was cuz I wanted to know how much you paid of the repair... :)
what are thoooooooooooose?
