    Super interesting. I use a lot of double stroke so it's a pity it can't do that, but I can't see how any air-drum approach could do double stroke. Thanks for creating this review!

    Revisiting this video, Freedrum as a product hasn't stood the test of time for me for two reasons - lack of sensitivity and serious angle drift issues which just get really annoying after a while (Have a look at my demonstration of the angle drift at 10:39 minutes in my video here: ruclips.net/video/eouU26n2RhI/видео.html). They've been sitting in a drawer here for about 2 years at this point. If you're looking to learn drums then get a practice pad, acoustic drum kit, or electronic drum kit, i.e. something that you can physically hit and practice your rebound. I'll be putting a lot more thought into future videos and I'll be a lot more critical of products where necessary in the future.

    HEADPHONES FOR FREEDRUM:
    SteelSeries headphones are One out of the 2 pairs of headphones that are compatible with the Freedrum App. It comes with a wireless dongle rather than it being bluetooth connected since you need your BT connected to the sensors. I got Freedrum sensors for Christmas 2020 and it was a little frustrating getting the playing style down and the app the crash frequently, but once you get used to the positioning and keeping your elbows more inward than outward (like 95% of drummers do), overall, I would give Freedrum a 7/10.

    (Logic user here) This might have been asked already, but can/how do you assign drum samples? Is there a stand-alone application that you open in Logic? Are my existing samples able to be used? Do the sensors recognize by angle and height the specific sound? How many sounds can you assign?

      Same on iPhone. No problem. I play with iPhone and GarageBand for vast range of DrumKits. Easy to connect and very stable. Tip: Turn “play in background” ON on Spotify and GarageBand to make it easier if phone closes etc. Another tip with my setup, is set volume in Spotify Playback settings to “Quiet”. That allows your drumming volume control in GarageBand to sit at same level or just above the level of the music, meaning you can easily hear your playing in good balance to the music without need for another mixing app.

    So any "I'm an engineer" Ideas on how to use Wireless headphones with the Sensors? I mean it's 2021 (ish) - There are literally no aux sockets on phones anymore (oops).

    • @electronicdrumadvisor
      @electronicdrumadvisor  4 года назад

      Hi Alan, Yeah the Bluetooth issue is quite a limitation. Alternatively, Freedrum say on their website that 2.4ghz wireless headphones work very well as a wireless alternative. E.g. Arctis 1 Wireless and Razer Nari Ultimate. (though of course, that's not particularly helpful if you only have Bluetooth headphones lying around! Probably the most low-tech solution would be to use an Aux adapter with your phone (e.g. Aux-to-Lightning, Aux-to-USB-C, etc) and wired headphones, that should work but I haven't tested it.)

    • @electronicdrumadvisor
      @electronicdrumadvisor  4 года назад

      The sensors definitely make the balance of the sticks different, but they're fairly light so you get used to it pretty quickly. On top of that, you need to adapt your playing to suit the range of motion that's required for this, which is also true for all virtual drumming products I've tried (you play with more 'deliberate' angles), but again, you get used to it in this case.

There are 2 main left twist gestures with the Freedrum hand sensors. Above the hi-hat left twist plays an open hat. Also left twist above the snare plays rimshot. I use GarageBand DrumKits via Bluetooth Midi which is easy to setup in Settings. I also now sit my left hand on my knee, with the sensor angled, giving it an even more realistic rimshot feeling. Ie not hitting my knee at the tip, but base of stick pivoting on my knee, and hand just slightly hitting at full stroke. Check out my second latest video and you’ll hear the use of rimshot (playing in free air in that case, not the technique I just described).

      Hi Will, IMO, if possible, it would be far more beneficial to get some sort of drum set (acoustic, or even a compact e-drum set), or even just a simple practice pad. Freedrum is pretty cool, and you'll be able to practice basic drum beats, but it's not a proper replacement for learning on a drum set or e-drum set. You're welcome! Yeah noise constraints were a big issue for me for years too. IMO, stuff like ghost notes and quick rolls are fairly hit-and-miss with any inertial motion tracking (or whatever similar technology) that Freedrum is using and I don't think I hit that point home enough in the video. Simply a practice pad or e-drum pads will be way better for these, and alternatively for air-drumming, Aerodrums which uses optical tracking and is supposed to be more accurate but requires more setup.

    • @robinstephenson9938
      @robinstephenson9938 3 года назад

      Short answer no, it is designed for air-drumming, however….I’ve played Freedrum for 3 years and recently go Remo SolentStroke practice pad. Works great for lite hitting on pad. Also, Freedrum 2 will have built in haptic feedback for an improved airdumming sensation, that in combination with a good drumkit sound in GarageBand and good quality headphones and you’d be surprised how realistic it sounds and feels. Finally, you can someone similar the drum rebound (the feel anyway), but allowing the drum stick to pivot slightly when you hit the air. The base end of the stick hitting the inside of your hand adds another sensation of rebound. However, aside from the practice pad mentioned above, not quite the same as real drums, but a great compliment.

    • @electronicdrumadvisor
      @electronicdrumadvisor  4 года назад +2

      Hi Niall, if you're serious about learning drums then I think the most important thing you should get is a practice pad as you'll learn a lot more from that. Many years ago, that's how I practiced drums (in between drum lessons) before I could afford to buy a drum kit and it still helped massively (using that along with tapping your feet on the floor is still a very valid practice option)! After that, Freedrum would be a 'nice to have' option to practice basic drum beats, have fun, and maybe keep you motivated. Enjoy travelling around Oz!!

    • @electronicdrumadvisor
      @electronicdrumadvisor  4 года назад

      Btw, for practice pads... evans realfeel 6 inch is a great option for travelling as it's small and pretty quiet.

      Recently got a Remo SilentStroke practice pad, and use in combination with Freedrum. Works great, for light drumming of course, as they’re designed for air-drumming and hitting too hard would throw the calibration off. However for rudiments etc, put some good headphones on and choose from plenty of DrumKits and you’ve now added another dimension to your practice.

    It’s a neat concept for those who want drums but live in a small space and can’t have acoustic drums. That said, drumming is really about feel, reaction and repercussive muscle memory. Nothing beats an acoustic set. Yes they’re bulky and hard to carry around, tuning can be a pain “new heads”. But there’s actually a presence of the kit. This absolutely offers none of that.

    I mean to play a drum kit you have to have a drum kit either digital or acoustic it doesn't matter but playing with sticks that have sounds that go to an app you're not going to get the full immerse feeling and the full immersed vision of what you're playing you know and somebody who's been playing myself for over 10 years you know knows that you've got to feel what you're doing and sticks just don't do.
    if you can't afford a drum kit or a drum set you know digitally then you can just buy a pair of drumsticks and just buy a drum pad and practice that way you know there are many ways to do it but I would not spend the money of these things are because they're too expensive and they really don't sound like you think they will..
