Ikr. Way back when, everyone knew how to sew, depending on their job.
If you were a sailor, you probably knew how to mend a sail if it had a tear. Men were and are tailors, they make clothes for men and women by sewing. It's a skill, and it's pretty important. It's not a 'girly' thing to sew and people should stop perpetuating that idea. It's just so stupid. 🤦

A: I was already searching for how to do it, you don't need to convince me to watch what I specifically searched for B: If someone needs to sew something and thinking it's not manly is what's stopping them, they've got some serious issues. It's just a skill to create or repair things.

On my 14th Birthday my mother sat me down and showed me how to sew, cook and do laundry much to my protest I might add. I explained that I didn't need to learn such things because my future wife would do these for me, she asked what if your wife is not around? To this day those lessons are the best gift I was ever given.
P.S. Helpful hint; I keep a suture kit and a small tube of Oralgel in my first aid kit and have had to use it several times when I was in the middle of nowhere and could not get to a doctor. The Oralgel makes for pain free sewing when a bandage just won't do.

I barely had enough spare thread to loop it for the knots at the end using 32", so I'd recommend using 36". That I'm using much more thread than the 24" he recommends may be a sign that I'm no expert at doing this, but then, if you were an expert you wouldn't be watching this. Making the knot at the start isn't as easy as he makes it look. It may take a few tries if my experience is anything to go by. Before you pull the needle through each time leave it halfway through and check that it's where you want it. Sliding the needle back so you can try again is easy UNTIL you've pulled it all the way through. Meanwhile if you do use more thread this will mean that the loop you're pulling through with each stitch is considerably longer and more likely to catch around other buttons so more care will have to be taken. Oh and be careful that the needle doesn't unintentionally go through a bit of cloth that wasn't one you should be piercing, that will really mess it up if you don't spot it before you've pulled the needle through. To avoid making a mess try not to snag the ends of the cotton beyond the original knot as you continue. And, yes, holding that needle on top of the button is going to be easier with some buttons than with others. So long as you (use more thread and) don't try to do it as fast as he does before you're practiced this seems like a passable guide.

Let's quit being petty and pissy about this-it's a good skill for everyone to have and there are certain techniques that make it a lot easier and the results better.

This was the best tutorial I could find on this. Everyone else (the first five or so I found) skipped a step as if I knew what I was doing. Yours covered every question I had, thanks!

Actually, you "learned" a very useful skill here. I'm not criticizing or acting like a know it all, I just thought you might appreciate the proper word. I know I'd rather be corrected than go around for years having others talk or snicker about my improper vocabulary.

Great video. One little note. There is a "button thread" that is used rather than ordinary sewing thread. There are also polyester threads that are colored and colorless.
