Not all sewing was done with the steady back stitch. For long stretches of fabric which would not be strained while wearing (such as skirt side seams below the hip), it was common to use a running stitch which allowed for multiple stitches to be sewn in one motion, with backstitches only occasionally as well as each end of the seam.

I am a long haul trucker, I haul steel and other flatbed commodities so my clothing gets a beating. I don't have room for a sewing machine in the truck so I hand stitch... a lot 😂. I put on music or a show on the TV and just sew up holes, sew patches and I have been known to taper and hem some of my jeans, all with hand stitches.

Remember that in school, we didn't have sewing machines, so, we were all taught the backstitch. We hand stitched blouses, skirts, aprons. Every line of stitching was inspected, must be straight and even, else undo every stitch to redo..
I enjoyed every needle work class...it was like foundation of my sewing background

Oh, wow. _Technically,_ I already knew how to backstitch, but keeping my stitch line even and straight has often eluded me. The tip about the tail being halfway between where the needle goes in and comes out just absolutely _blew my mind_ for how much simpler it was than I had expected. I haven't actually tried it out myself yet, but a big preemptive thank you!

As a leftie I'm appreciative of the (RIGHT HANDED) label. When I was first learning I would always hold my fabric the same orientation as everyone else and could not for the life of me figure out why I was struggling so much. Once it hit me that I just had to turn it around I felt so silly. Story of my life though: learning to tie my shoes was a journey.

I’ve been sewing 54 years. Started at 6 (yes 6) went on to work for 3 well known fashion brands and have loved sewing since day 1! My favorite is hand stitching which my Grandmother taught me. She hand stitched quilts (not one stitch by machine) she would make big money with her quilts. These days I make plushie dolls for kids (hand stitched) . There is nothing like knowing the dolls I make are so loved. My 18 year old niece still has the doll I made her 12 years ago (first doll I made). I have a small sewing box that I take with me because there’s always some kind of wait which gives me more sewing time. I love that there are videos like this teaching people the basics of sewing so they too can enjoy the art of sewing! 💕💕

I appreciate the spoiler. I sifted through the instructions, it looks like a thorough delineation of the backstitch, ideal for beginners, or people honestly wanting to understand the logistics of tidy, controlled precision stitches.
With the narrators soothing voice and slow clear movements, it seems a great thing to watch & listen to as I sew my own way. I will not be surprised if I learn something.

I really enjoy sewing with just a needle and thread, it has become much easier over time, and just finished replacing a zip by hand for the first time, heady business indeed. this is simply the best and most helpful tutorial i've seen so far, many people make 10 minute videos to teach one simple stitch you could learn in less than a minute, your demonstration was very clear and straight forward, i didn't even turn the volume up to follow the instructions beacause the visuals are so clear and simple. in short, thats a great video thank you very much

when i was broke and needed curtains for my bedroom, i took a valance and a curtain that i already had, used them as a pattern and hand-sewed the "new" set from a flat sheet i had on hand, too. that was about 20 years ago and they're hanging in my bedroom today. they've been through countless wash and dries, and still look just as good as day 1.

Use sewing chalk to lightly MARK the line, so when you get cross eyed from too much sewing, you still get the sewing line accurately lined up! Love sewing!
Summer shorts all fell apart, especially the Armani expensive ones, so just sew them up! UK 🇬🇧🍾
