Huge thanks to your mom. I'm an adult male who had never sewn a button on. I was about to ask my own mom if I could drop a pair of shorts by. Instead, I ordered a sewing kit, watched this video, and just sewed my first button back on successfully. THANK YOU to all moms.

To close out the 2 free ends. If you don't loop and tighten them together, wgen you pull on one end it will just come out when sewn.

Just watched this video to sew a button on my pants. It doesn’t look a nice as the button your mom sewed onto your pants but I think it will work and it seems pretty solid for a first timer sewing a button on.

When you asked your mom for help I thought you were joking at first. You actually asked your mom for help though lol
I actually know how to do it but I wanted to involve her in the video. Also, her technique is probably better since she has more experience.
@@Jay_Rule In any event I was watching your video today and sewed my first button back onto some pants I had that were virtually new. They're less than a few months old. I also haven't washed them that many times. So it was definitely a surprise to me that the button came off, however thanks to this video I got the concept and was able to fix.
@@boredfive3001 I'm surprised that the button fell off on something so new. That is just poor workmanship. This is an important skill that once you've learned it, you will never forget. You will never have to ask for help now that you know how to sew a button and it's not just for pants.
@@Jay_Rule Well, the buttons with the holes I know how to do now I guess. However the ones without the holes are a semi mystery still. I had got inspired a few months ago and wanted to repair a few pants that's only issue were missing buttons. However I bought all the materials and never put to use until today. Because these pants were actual pants that I used. I also didn't know how to sew. I had bought a bag full of replacement buttons and everything. I was planning on using something more "automatic" which is why I didn't tinker with the manual sewing kit I had until today but yeah. For regular buttons with holes in them I know what to do.

I actually learned this skill from my sister who I'm sure my mom taught. Once you learn it, you'll never forget it.
Instead of asking mum for help thought I would try my hand at fixing it myself.

Yep worked pretty good. For me its the wrapping around 4 time under the button that really ties it all down. Great video I saved it to my DIY playlist :)

One thing I've seen done is wrapping the thread around behind the button a few times. This makes it extra secure but also helps separate the button from the material so there's room for the other side of the pants to go behind it.
That sounds like a good idea too but it could push out the button a little, making it harder to close out/button on.
@@Jay_Ruleagreed on making the button stick out to much. I have a pair of pants that have a specially designed button that sticks out for that reason, but it sticks out so far it gets in the way. nice in that the other layer of pants isn't pinched, but it's to much of a good thing.
@@JediSentinal You can always change the buttons out. I know it's a hassle but if it bothers you that much.

Loosen the button too much & it puts a LOT of stress on the (weaker) zipper!

@@Jay_Rule in the last shot the button doesn't line up with the zipper any more. Stressing the zipper and it doesn't look the greatest. Bigger pants or a smaller body may be in order.

Yes, that is correct. If you have eye issues, try wearing glasses or your phone with the zoom in feature. Also, doing this in a lighted area would help. Good luck!

She cut way more than a foot.
You just estimate how much you need but for each button I think 6 inches is more than enough.
