- I'm so pleased that my Mum (Donna) has joined me in this video for a bookish chat. I asked some of my Instagram community to send me their questions about our reading habits and tastes, and we managed to answer over 50 brilliant questions. My Mum definitely influenced my love for reading, and I'm excited to feature her as a regular guest for my monthly seasonal Book Club, both on RUclips and on my podcast, Tea & Tattle.

This is so lovely! My mother was also a huge reader and she'd gone blind in her late 20s but she still listened to audiobooks and she was the one who inspired my love of reading and she began teaching me how to read at age 2 and by age 5 I was reading the mail to help her out and in second grade I was reading books such as Little Women, Nancy Drew and yes, even medical books on animals. My mother died years ago when I was 23 and I so miss sharing my love of books with her. So, this is so lovely to see you and your mother enjoying books together, I hope we'll see more of your mom here! :)

My parents never were readers but I made sure to read to my son since he was a baby. And your mom made me laugh when she said she would put you early to bed so she can have some reading time! I giggled when you're mum described being terrified of cracking the spine of your books. I'm the same as you Miranda, I love keeping my books pristine. 'Neither a borrower or a lender be,' is my motto when it comes to my books.

Miranda so glad you are making more videos! You are my favorite book tuber because our tastes are so similar. I've always loved English novels and anything set in England. I also read a lot of English detective stories and have recently discovered Dean Street Press and British Library Crime Classics. You made me laugh talking about your nanny. I watch you two and the mother and daughter friendship and miss my mother who I lost last year but then remember how she was so anti-reading and thought all these woman should be getting on with their housework 😂

Since the first of September, I started A fortnight in September, with a plan to read a chapter a day( among other books I am reading). This is my first Persephone book, and I decided yesterday to google best Persephone books, this led me to your youtube channel. I spent my Sunday going through most of your videos. Love, love them and thank you for all the suggestions. A treasure trove! Looking forward to new videos and to the book club episodes with your Mum.

Yay!! I'm not the only one who looks at the end of a book! I enjoy books so much more because knowing things work out makes me less anxious. I can better immerse myself.

I very much enjoyed this video. My mom is not a big reader, so it was refreshing to hear you both discussing the love of books. If anyone is a mood reader, like I am, and has a hard time picking the next book. A tip I discovered myself is reading a short story or novella between longer novels. I just did this and it worked great as a short of palette cleanser 😊

You two! What a delight you two are together. Can’t wait for more of you and your Mom.
I love your videos, it is so obvious you are an avid reader and so bright and intelligent, such interesting conversation and your Mum is so lovely too. But I must admit that my heart dropped when you said you don’t use your local library - public libraries are amazing these days and we really need the support/issues. It is so easy to renew by phone or online (in my authority you can renew for ten periods of 3 weeks, as long as there are no other reservations on the book) and at the moment with the pandemic, there are no overdue fees, no due dates - it is so easy! We have all the latest books, a great back catalogue, local studies books, autobiographies. Please give libraries another chance. We would love to have you and maybe we would surprise you! : ) XX
What an odd comment to make, when if you'd listened to what we said, we said the library was closed when we arrived in Yorkshire (due to the pandemic), but that we'd signed up online, and I specifically said I like to use the library for borrowing audiobooks.
Btw, I take it you're a fan of Miss Plum & Miss Penny, with your choice of moniker?
I am so glad to hear that you read the ending of a book first. I do that a lot, and I haven't find yet anyone else who does that. I will also often choose a book by the writing of the last page or last paragraph. Sometimes, this might be a spoiler and other times is not enough to spoil the ending. Either way, for me it is not a spoiler to read the ending first; instead, knowing the ending makes me want to read the book even more to see how it got to this ending. Nevertheless, I don't like much to have someone else tell me the ending of a book before I finish reading it. I only like it when I read the ending myself even when I read it before I start the book or when I am in the middle of the book.

I love your videos so much. This is my favorite. For whatever reason, the “seasonal reading” comment struck me. I do this too. But I also have a bit of a quirky reading that is seasonal, that I would like to share. Every year, Between Thanksgiving and Christmas, I read George Eliot’s “Scenes of. Clerical Life” and Charlotte Bronte’s “Jane Eyre”. I started doing this over a decade ago, and I am pretty consistent. Sometimes I may drop “Jane Eyre” and read Thackeray’s “Christmas Stories”.
Thank you very much! Funnily enough I just finished a reread (or relisten as I just got it on audible) of Jane Eyre, and Scenes of a Clerical Life is lined up on my TBR !

I use Goodreads to keep track.of my reading. It is a very quick way to find a book mentioned, posting the book being read and the last is books read. I have been able to look back A few years and find that book I read but forgotten title or author.

This has been such a lovely video! I recently found your channel and subscribed and it’s been such a treat. I’m trying to get back into reading after many years of not ( I went to university for literature and it sort of made reading very exhausting for me). I started following you about three weeks ago and love it! I am Spanish and live in Bilbao. I usually read in English to keep improving my English and love all kind of novels! I take advantage every time I can travel to the Uk to buy as many of them in the charity shops! I love them!

The last few weeks I've really been enjoying "binging" on all your videos. Love those with your mom! What a lovely lady she is, as are you. Lovely video, I liked seeing you interact and discuss your tastes. I love Golden Age and also some modern writers. I discovered Peter Grainger via Kindle, and have enjoyed these immensely, particularly seeing the author develop.

I like kindle coz I get a lot of Jane Austen fan fiction on kindle unlimited and I now pre read for an author too from that genre. I also love that you can change the font size as large print books can be rather pricey x

I am a fan of Rosamunde Pilcher my favourite books are Wild Mountain Thyme & The Empty House. Love Patricia Wentworth is fabulous ! Have you read any of Lillian Beckwith books? Wonderful author. Her books are set in The Hebrides.... I am blessed to work in a public library & have access to some amazing treasures. ❤️📚

Wonderful having find your channel. I just love it. I am Norwegian but my mother loved England, and I was brought up with english litterature. I was so exited to hear you mention Anthony Trollope. I love his books. I really liked the book Can you forgive her. I just paused the video to get it now. I have never met somone who have heard about this author. hello im a new subscriber, omg I love your channel and your relationship with your mum! I totally relate to some of your conversation, in fact I think im the only avid reader in the family (none that I know of at the moment)
Did you all grow the beautiful Dahlias and Zinnias? And for your next Q and A- Do you ever find yourself saving the rest of a series because you don't want it to end? You don't want to run out of them? I thought of this when Donna mentioned Miss Read. I feel this way. I'm sort of hoarding them for when I "need" them. I've done this with humor books too. I savor slowly. Also I'd love to see a good list of Victorian books such as your Mum mentions. Diaries are my favorite too, and I definitely hope you will do a show on those.

Hi, Miranda. I just found your channel and have subscribed. I have been a huge fan of Miss Read for many years, though I prefer the Fairacre stories to Thrush Green. I also like cosy mysteries and Victorian novels, and am currently reading Barchester Towers. It seems we have similar tastes. xx

You're so lucky and blessed that your mom has the same interest in reading as you. My mom and I are complete opposites unfortunately. I love reading and my mother couldn't care less for it and thinks I'm a fool for my love of reading :(
