When Gareth Southgate took on the role of England manager in 2016, the national team was at one of its lowest points. They had exited that summer’s European Championships in humiliating fashion at the hands of Iceland, taking the country’s wait for a victory in a tournament knock-out game to ten years, and had just seen Roy Hodgson’s replacement Sam Allardyce leave his post after one match following allegations of improper conduct.
Almost five years later, and he has surpassed the expectations of many who doubted his appointment, becoming the first Three Lions manager since Alf Ramsey to lead the side to consecutive semi-finals at major tournaments, taking them to a first major final since 1966, and blooding a new generation of talent which has not only reinvigorated fans’ support in the team by delivering on the pitch, but also become excellent role models with their actions away from it. But how did such a seemingly unspectacular manager end up changing the culture of the England national team? Let’s find out.

Reminds me of how managers like Wenger and Fergie set a new bar of professionalism within English club football. Now we’re seeing the same attitude and organisation finally being translated to the national team. It helps create an atmosphere of confidence and self belief rather than just pure blind hope.

I'm not into football! So i only found out this week that he was manager - I'd love to see him complete the circle from 96, i'm weirdly emotional watching all the documentaries to get myself up to date. But most of all, i think uk footie fans deserve this win.
I remember his penalty in 96 - i left some tupperware on a hob ring that was switched on and was fanning the smoke out the window when he made the miss. A psychology undergrad then, I wondered what his future would look like, whither or thrive? Seems he is a lion after all. When i watch national matches we always lose - so i wont be watching tomorrow!

To bring the England squad back from the brink in the way he has and the time he has, you could easily make the claim that Southgate is the best England manager ever.
10 years ago, l players with the abilities of Jadon Sancho, Jack Grealish and Phil Foden would have been furious about their lack of playing time at this tournament, but Southgate has galvanised them and they all see themselves as a integral part of the overall project.
Whether they win the final or not, the England side have turned a corner and should all be treated as heroes by the fans.

Just come back to this video having done some more research into the FA and what Gareth Southgate has been doing behind the scenes.
I think you are right. I think he could be described as the best Manager. Sir Alf Ramsey may have got similar results and changed the role of the England Manager to a more encompassing role but the competition so little in comparison. I mean, yes, we reached the semi-final of the Euros in 1968 but that literally just getting out of the group stage back then. And there was far less pressure, politics, and negative history to way the team down.
I love this video as it is the first to mention what Southgate had changed even prior to 2016. Most forget or don't realise that these changes didn't start when he took the role in 2016 but has been part of effectively a 12 year plan reforming every part of the England set up from the grass roots and coaching up the mentality of the senior team and relationship with the media.

I understood the fears over Southgate up until 2018, but I thought their performance in the World Cup should have silenced most of the doubters, especially given the amount of promising youngsters that were beginning to break through. Glad to see him finally getting the recognition he deserves.

  • @carlybishop6160

I watched this video 3 months ago and have just come back to it to say thank you! :)
It has led me down a very interesting rabbit hole. I love that this video finally mentions what Southgate did prior to 2016. It feels like that iceberg anology is very relevant here and it is a pity that most people are not aware of his influence across the whole FA with his and Brooking's 10 Year Plan. Two days before the Euros final Sir Trevor Brooking discussed this plan more openly than ever before, so maybe it will start coming out in the open soon enough.
Not only is Gareth Southgate arguably the best Manager England has ever had in creating such a turn around, but I think it can be easily argued that he is probably the most influential individual in the history of the FA.

I remember my first reaction to him getting the job was "Well lets at least give him a chance, the FA know who they've appointed", and I also remember seeing his first squad and liking what I saw. He was clearly interested in moving the national team forwards.
I wouldn't say I've never doubted him. Like anyone, I questioned some of his team selections in this tournament, I've wondered if he's tactically flexible enough, and our performances in the run up to the tournament were hardly inspiring.
With that said though, what he's proved to be during WC 2018 and Euro 2020 is a poised leader and a fantastic man manager, who is brave enough to make big decisions and stand by his convictions, whilst also being humble enough to know his limitations and take advice from those around him. And the thing about being England manager is that having that humility along with the resources available, means he's been able to surround himself with all the right people to fill in the gaps in his knowledge. It's also very clear just how much the job means to him, and how important it is to him that England are successful. That interview after the Germany game, when he was asked about 96, was raw, heartbreaking and ultimately endearing. I want England to win, of course, but I want it for Southgate too.
Couldn't ask for anyone better, to be honest. If we win tomorrow, he goes down as an absolute legend and hero, along with all of those players. If we lose, then so be it, but I hope that doesn't take any of the gloss off the job he's done, or the man he's been.

In addition I think there is a factor people don't talk about. 8 out the 16 RICHEST clubs in Europe are English. EAch of these clubs has serious aspirations to play in Europe. You can register 25 player for your squad 4 must be home grown at the club and a total of 8 must be home grown in the country. All of these kids can play for England. With changing youth development and sports science you can now train a promising young player to be faster, stronger, fitter, more technical and a better football mind usinging tried and true methods. You don't have to wait and hope. Decent players become good, good players great and great players world class. With 8 clubs each searching for 8 english players to be, at the very least useful squad players they can register for europe that means Southgate has at least 64 quality players to pick from. Remember the premier league probably has more clubs that are better than their national team than the rest of the serious footballing world has put together. Every other major league in europe has one (or in the case of spain two) teams winning the league 7 out of the 10 last years. With the premier league having twice the tv deal of any other league and a flatter distribution than any other major league you have a situation where half of the richest clubs in europe are desperately trying to find and develop 8 players that can play for england.
Until the balance of world football changes England will have a continuing stream of great young players, like Foden, Mount, Rice, Alexander-Arnold ect. giving the team consistent quality and depth unmatched by any other country. Southgate has brought cohesion and at this point all you need to win a big tournament is a little bit of luck. I also think that the promotion of Southgate from within and his focust on building Team England as an institution which is bigger than any manager mean that an England run by a 'civil service' guided by a manager who is more of a boring CEO than an exciting genius will be competetive in all future tournaments.

    • @gudmundursteinar

I don’t think England are fixed unless they beat Italy. He hasn’t beat a candidate to win the tournament yet, having lost to Belgium twice in 2018. With that squad England could literally do 2008-2012 Spain with a more competent manager

Nobody is going to do what Spain did from 2008-2012 in the foreseeable future. There’s too many good nations in this generation. Even Spain themselves just barely managed in 2010.
By the way, both of the matches vs Belgium in 2018 were immaterial to the knockout round. England and Belgium have since played and beaten each other in the Nations League however.

I think you are right as I think he might struggle with club football. Not saying he would be a dreadful club Manager but international and club football is so different and he is so perfectly suited to international football rather than club.
It would be interesting to see if you are right and whether other countries might be after him. I highly doubt he would ever take on another country. It is his love and understanding for England which has got him this far. I don't think that is quite as transferable as it might seem and I don't think he would ever help manage a team who could possibly play England in the future.
