He’s almost talking about progression like he’s developing the players, but he’s not. He picks the best player in the country, and has one of the best English generations ever available to him. After 7 years it’s safe to say the poor win ratio against top teams is down to his inadequacies as a manager.

England just lack the pedigree that some of the big national teams have. Germany, Italy, Argentina, Brazil and France get to the final of a tournament on a regular basis. For every tournament they win they probably finish runners up just as often.
Spain, Croatia, Netherlands, Portugal, Uruguay have better tournament records in recent history.
Law of averages suggest if we get to the final more consistently we will win one, until then I am afraid it’s the biennial disappointment of losing a 50 50 game typically at the quarter final stage.
I put Spain in the second tier because it was only until recently they corrected their tag of perennial underachievers with their hat trick of tournament wins.

Think about what all the great managers have got. The ones who win. It's passion. Pep has it in abundance. Klopp has got it. Sir Alex had it.
Managers that will make you listen. Inspire you. Motivate you. A manager you will go into the trenches for.
Southgate is very good at gelling players and bringing the group together. That, for me, makes him a potentially fantastic number two at best.
And if he's leading us in tournements, we have to get very lucky to go all the way. Who knows. Maybe we will in 2024.

@@yoshiwoollyworld you can't win every game, even Man City lose. Italy are the perfect case in point, you can be Champions of Europe one year, and dross the next. At least we're consistently competitive. First world cup I watched properly, England didn't even qualify for it, and this period under Southgate has been easily the most enjoyable as an England fan. I was too young for Bobby Robson and I wasn't born for Ramsey's teams so only going off my own experiences

@@Klinsmann1985 you can’t win every single match, but southgate can only win against scrub teams and can’t win when he is the underdog. He also lost a semifinal vs a croatia team that france would easily beat in the final, and bottled a final vs an italy team that couldn’t reach the world cup. He snatched defeat from the jaws of victory twice already, and will continue to do so.

I think this is a fair assessment.
I think it’s unfair to tactically and strategically criticise Southgate as an armchair football fan, as he will have exponentially greater information, skill and intuition than yourself if you feel that way. Therefore I will assume the decisions he made were the ones that I would not have KNOWN to be able to make any better then.
However, in the light of this, this England team has not won anything under his management. It’s been 3 tournaments, 1 of which against Italy was possibly the easiest run to a final for any team in a Euros ever, and we failed. His teams results have a PROVEN record: England are consistently able to beat the weaker teams during both early and later stages of competition, and England have Consistently lost against the stronger sides during both early and later stages of competition.
This is not a technical critique. This is about history and proven results. Southgate has never beaten a top side in competition. Why is this any different to the premier league where clubs like spurs can beat the likes of Burnley or Sheffield, but lose to the rest of the top 6… no one considers them a challenger for the title.

Southgate obviously isn't the best manager in the world.
But I don't think he gets enough respect.
If Pep, Klopp, Tuchel or Ancelotti had took over an England team that had just got knocked out to Iceland, and got them to a first Semi Final in 30 years, then a first final in like 60 years only losing on penalties, then I think they'd be given a lot more credit.

People probably don’t give respect because southgate bottled a tournament that he should’ve won, and the four managers you mentioned would’ve won euro 2020 instead of losing on penalties

He's a failure already. We clearly should have won something but this man can't get it over the line with a talented crop of players.
I suggest the FA appoint someone else. It hasn't worked

Love how he's trying to give himself credit for the abundance of young talent coming through but taking no responsibility for the lack of bottle he himself has shown in using that talent. Sooner he goes the better.

He was part of the young talent coming through. Then made it a exciting and welcoming place for newcomers. He got rid of all the club only culture that ruined it before. If Other managers were there the whole cycle of dismal performances would have carried on.

lets cut the bull, he is our most successful manager of recent times. always questioned. the England team is coming towards the peak of its cycle and he deserves to reap the inevitable rewards
