Their first goal from open play directly followed a foul on Saka when we were attacking. It was particularly unfair. But I do agree it wasn't great that we relied on penalties to even hope of a draw. But such is life and football. You don't get to choose how the match pans out, but fair officiating is to be expected. Especially with VAR and replays being used.

The only gold plated scoring chances we had was from two penalties. We didn't have a finisher on the pitch. Kane was one but he appears to be playing some rather odd role in the midfield at times.
The thing that makes Harry Kane an internationally great player is the fact he is a complete Forward. He's not just a goal scorer like Giroud, he can drop deep and make world class plays to his team mates.
I'm proud of what we did and where we got to.
I think in the future we will get further, I'm still holding onto hope that this side can create some magic - at least into Euros 2024

Southgate has proven he does not have the final 5% to win tournaments. He put a substitute on with 40 secs left, which made no sense and took off his best player around 60 mins. You are not going ro win a world cup with set pieces, you need to win games through open play in knockouts

The stat about our results against the top teams says it all. We do not win the big games because we do not have a belief in our ability to win, and every time Southgate puts out a team with 3 defensive midfielders we reinforce that fact.
A proactive manager would say that his team are going to create problems for the opposition instead of how do we stop the opposition from scoring.

I keep saying this and have said it since we bottled it in both the final and semi final in the last competitions. 99.99 percent can see when we have got back into AND began to dominate the game Southgate F's it all up and believes we are vulnerable and have to hang on. Everyone can see when England have the bit between their teeth we're dangerous. France would have crumbled last night had we capitalised on our goal and gone for more. The centre backs have so much of the ball they eventually hit a sloppy pass which puts us straight under pressure as its in or by our penalty area. We always lack any 'go', we're 2-1 down, it's 5 minutes into injury time and they're passing it backwards! Dallying on the ball. It's infuriating!! Grealish comes on in the last minute of added time??!! I knew he would put mount on sometime. He can't resist. For an attacking midfielder mount is predictable, boring and goes missing for large parts of the game. He might work hard but we needed someone to carry the ball out of midfield and give tiring French legs a problem. Maddison should have got 20 minutes aswell. The rashford free kick was begging for Maddison. He gives you that final pass, the killer ball to actually make our passing around mean something. Definitely, the referee was a disgrace. No question. The first France goal aside, he ignored 7,8 incidents go in the first half alone. He was advised at half time no doubt he needed to make it less blatant because he clearly tried to rectify his bias and started to give us some decisions. The world are already accusing England fans of soreness saying he must have been fair, you got 2 penalties. We should have had at least 2 before half time. Some of the things he was waving on....he couldn't even mask his bias he was so poor. He surely gets demoted from FIFA now? (Albeit with a hefty pay off from the French board that govern FIFA). Saying all that, we didn't help ourselves at all. I lay no blame on Harry kane, he isn't the reason we are out. We had them rattled at one stage and blew it. We caught them off guard several times, and instead of putting a cross in or playing fast passes through, we slowed it down and allowed them to regroup. We had the ball edging their box and passed it all the way back to pickford! It was bizarre at times. The French were let off really. Having an extra player that makes all the rules up on the fly obviously helps. 'Build from the back '. To take it all down again? Pointless. Frustrating. Typical. Another opportunity gone. Foden and Bellingham deserve the chance to play for an England side capable of winning things, a manager who will utilise their skills and actually try to beat teams. It's way worse being edged out knowing we had more than enough to win than say losing 3-1, 4-1 attacking the opposition and making the right decisions during the game. Credit to Southgate for the work he's done, he's done well getting us further than I've ever seen us go but he's not the man to take England further. We won't win anything with him because we can't beat the big teams. We are capable, but we can't with Southgate and he has proved that yet again when it really matters. He isn't going to suddenly change and start actually using the substitutes, he won't evolve into a more aggressive type and set out to be the dominant team. His pragmatic nature has cost us too many times now and for that it's cost him his job. Fair play, all the best. Identity a character with the right identity, the balls to change things when needed. A winner with tactical nous. The search is on....

Get real, Adam. All that waffling and the fact remains while England had periods of dominance and looked good sometimes, France barely broke a sweat in the match apart from Theo Hernandez deciding to be stupid. You should have punished France there.
You were even outplayed in midfield when France decided to step up with Griezmann and even Rabiot putting in a shift. You have more well known names but Tchoumeni and the other two could recover possession when required and had comparable ball skills to your apparently superior midfield. This wasn't even prime superstar laden France. You breezed through the easiest group in the World Cup with a glittering squad but this is your ceiling since you failed the test of recovering from going behind.
France were better than you. If Giroud and Rabiot buried their early gifted chances from England's defense, it would have also been the same thing.
