    I have a lot of time for Southgate as a person but I'd find this a lot more compelling if he discussed tactically what went wrong against Croatia, Italy and France and what he is going to do to ensure those things don't happen again. It's very easy to say "I've learned and I'll improve" what have you learned? What will improve?

      He knows what the issues are and knows how to resolve them but he’s not going to broadcast it to the world before the fact. If you haven’t already noticed how he has changed things tactically between each tournament thus far, then I don’t think you have the credentials to comment.

      Against Croatia we lost the midfield battle from the second half onwards, against Italy we couldn't keep the ball well enough, against France we allowed Giroud a free header in the box twice in the space of 30 odd seconds.

      In all fairness to Southgate against France he didn't really do to much wrong. England were the better team and were treated very unfairly by the referee with blatant fouls on Kane, Saka and Mount constantly being waved away. The only criticism I have against France was despite having completed more passes and creating more chances they did not really possess a cutting edge from open play, other than that they were excellent and played much better than they had done in there previous 2 tournaments with the way they attacked and by scoring lot's of goals.

    An example about a top manager and a clueless manager:
    France losing 2-0 in WC final being completely dominated and everyone thinking it's over.
    Deschamps takes off two senior players in the 40th min Giroud and Dembele for two youngsters Kolo Muani and Thuram and they play a big part in making it 2-2.
    Compare this to Southgate who no matter the game and the score plays Sterling, Kane, Maguire and Rice for 90 mins.
    It's only one tactic or bust with him.

    • @sapete1936
      @sapete1936 9 месяцев назад

      I certainly did not interpret his comments into an opinion that he was happy or satisfied with just reaching a final. My understanding is that he is pleased to achieve some consistency by getting to the business end of the last two major tournaments. However his belief and ambition is to go that one step further and lift a major trophy. I personally believe that he is extremely lucky to have an incredibly talented squad at his disposal, however I do question how he uses that group of players and his tactical ability. My assessment is that if England do go on to achieve something special during his tenure it will be in spite of Gareth Southgate and not because of him.

      @JohnDoe-gx8di It's the manner which England have gone out of every tournament under Wokegate. Wokegate has had the best opportunities to win a tournament at Euro 2020 and World Cup 2018, but goes out with a wimper in every tournament due to tactical nativity and lack of belief. The bottom line is Southgate isn't a winner. He never won anything as a player and as a manager all he's done is get Middlesbrough relegated. Southgate is just an FA yes man and want to be politician. The only thing he's ok at is working with young players and when he leaves England no Premier League clubs will go near him because he's not a good manager.

    When Pep managed Barcelona Spain won the World cup. When Pep managed Bayern Munich Germany won the World cup. Now we have had Pep, Klopp, Conte, Tuchel, Arteta( yes I'm an Arsenal fan) all winners with elite mentality. And Southgate is still talking about progress when he should be thinking of winning tournaments back to back. Well i totally agree with J.Simon. England+ Southgate= No Trophies. Sad part is the amount of talent England has. 😲...

    I can see Simon's point, I really can, but when I see the comments regarding Southgate's failings I can't help but think that people have forgotten what went before. Capello's team was completely dross. Hodgson distinguished himself by creating an even worse team than Capello. Erikkson? Nope. Robson is seen as a saint now - did he win anything with England? No. Venables? Great team. Didn't win. When Southgate came in we all thought that the future was poor, and the time of the "Golden Generation" had passed, but he has created a very, very competitive team of young players who are improving. Some of the games have been excellent (admittedly some poor ones) and his team made me want to watch England again. I wouldn't have watched Capello's / Hodgson's teams if you paid me. We need to get behind Gareth and this team and see where it takes us. Of course Gareth's cycle will end - probably in the next 2 to 4 years - but let him see the team he created mature, and let's see if they can get the job done.

    Vs France in the semi he could have been braver with his subs, Rashford should have come on a lot earlier for a start.
