Large HO Train Layout Build - Ep 8 - How to Install DCC (NCE PowerCab)

  • In my longest episode yet, I go over exactly how I setup and wire my layout for DCC using the NCE PowerCab Starter Set. I show what tools I use and the sizes of wire as well. I try my best to explain everything as simply as I can. One thing I don't mention is that all my switches are DCC safe which some of yours my not be. Ill try to bring that up next episode but If your using Atlas Code 100 switches you are more then likely good!

    Good video. I use the Weller 7200 solder gun version. Its not as powerful, but the option of a trigger helps while soldering when not in use. I've learned that with NCE PowerCab, there is no "off" switch. I installed a rocker type into the power supply cord. That way, I don't have to keep unplugging the cable to turn it off. Over time, the cord's plastic head connection wears down and breaks. With the switch I can leave it plugged in. hope this helps.

    Wow, I been trying to find a very basic to the point yet so informative video on how to connect DCC. You sir are a genius and I appreciate someone like you making it very easy to understand and not bore you with so much additional info that’s not necessary.
    Cheers 🍻

    the first video I've seen that makes wiring for DCC seem SIMPLE!
    and makes me realise the same layout could be wired for both DC and DCC (just don't power them both at the same time)
    THANK YOU!

    So glad you went with NCE, but you DO use the coiled cord. That goes from the front fascia jack to the handheld remote. The straight wire with jacks is for hooking up other NCE components. Boosters, more jacks, etc. have fun man

    That GP40 sounded amazing. I've bought material to start modeling a HO rebuilt Super 7 23B and a battery electric locoomotive rebuilt from a retired B40-8. One section of my future layout will have a 3% grade that will serve a cement industry and if I have enough room another customer. Their should be, it's nearly 15 ft long.
    Thanks again for sharing this with us fellow modelers.

    Nice video mate. I must say that BN GP40 is a beauty. And welcome to the world of DCC you will soon discover that you will have a lot more operational protentional with DCC so you can have a train running on the main line and another loco switching in the yard and they wont interfere with each other. Look forward to the next one. - Nicholas.

    Great video TR I've got to purchase that DCC SOUND REMOTE! Seems pretty simple to run the wires and splice the track leads into them. And luckily all my locomotives were bought w DCC. I bought 8 different locomotives, 14 hopper cars, 12 boxcars and 6 tankers 3months ago. Why idk lol, and we're not moving into our new home til roughly April. I'm using a spare bedroom to build my layout and the rest will be pics of locomotives, reflective safety vests from 4 different railroads, Starlite 222 conductor's lanterns and whatever else I can add.

    Love your videos and look forward to them week after week, thanks for posting them. I am very impressed with the sounds that come out of the Locomotive! I was curious, just how many wires in total have to be soldered to the tracks in order to complete the Layout?

    • @TopRailroad
      @TopRailroad  2 года назад +1

      It depends on the size of the layout but what I did was do a pair of white and red feeders to every row of track. If that row of track was longer then 3 or 4 feet I put another pair of feeders to prevent voltage drops

    Great video and that DCC Starter set looks good, I will check it out. One thing though. My HO layout is only 4x8 with an outer and inner oval loop all connected. With this size layout so I still need to do the bus wire and multiple soldered connections??? Would I be OK with just the terminal connections to the DCC controller?

    • @TopRailroad
      @TopRailroad  7 месяцев назад

      You could probably get away with just the connecting of the DCC terminals but I would connect it and test it out all through the layout to see how to works

  • @johncipolla8335
    @johncipolla8335 Год назад

    I used to drill a small hole in the rail. and stick the wire through. or just make enough of an indentation to put the tip of the wire then solder. I also used to wire m annual bocks where when a train passed over one section it activated another train or a switch. I loved the wiring aspect.

    When connecting your feeders to the bus wire you don’t have to strip the bus wire to connect to the feeders?

    • @TopRailroad

      Luckily you don’t need to do that if you’re using those suitcase connectors. It’s actually suggested that you don’t strip nothing just clamp it as is
