    VH4 - Channel 3 or Channel 2 for life?

    • @TheOtherJohnBrowne

      If I can only use one for life and I get to use a boost pedal, Channel 2. With some knob trickery, you can cover almost everything with that underrated channel.

    The TOOL box!
    Pair with a Les Paul Custom with Seymour Duncan - Duncan Distortion bridge pickup into MXR MicroAmp for volume boost and low cut, then a DOD FX40b Graphic EQ with the 3200Hz slider boosted. Guitar played with a Jim Dunlop .73mm Standard Nylon pick. Mesa Boogie Rectifier Standard Straight cabinet (V30's) mic'd up with Shure SM57 dynamic, Neumann U47 Tube, Neumann KM84 "pencil" condenser microphones all plugged into Neve 10 series mic preamps and blended. Double tracked to Quantegy 499 24-track tape.

    Also, in your closing thoughts you made a good point... (sorry sent loads of messages). I think the Fractal stuff compliments the player. It's something about the way it takes the signal and enhances it and compresses it, it's hard to explain but if you hear people on the fractal stuff, they sound much better as a player then if they'd use a traditional amp. An amp like this as you said, will pick up on every little nuisance in your playing and for me, that makes it far more appealing.

      @@HumanHamCubeI was wondering the same thing bro, along with the Bogner blue and red pedals. I have an amp I absolutely LOVE, but I really want to have the ability to have different gain/distortion structures if I so choose or a song calls for it. My amp has plenty of awesome sounding gain on tap, but a Diezel/ Bogner sound at the press of a button would be literally all I'd need. I have the Friedman IR-X preamp and it's amazing, so that bad boy and the other 2 would complete my personal trifecta of favorites.

    On my VH4, channel 3 doesn't like overdrives except the MXR Microamp, which retains the exact same tone of the amp adding sizzle and a little bit more gain. Channel 2 is fantastic but for what I like the most, a TS808 or TS9 is a must. It's my dream amp and I'm happy I have a special one with me.

    Nice one Leon 👍sounds sick . I also must confess I bought one for channel 3 but as time has gone by I find channel 2 is massively underrated. Channel two and three are essentially the same just wired differently said Peter Diezel . The extra gain stage comes in on channel 4 more compressed and voiced for single notes , channel for solos. And absolutely agree with you , there is no where to hide in this amp it will highlight your mistakes but is very rewarding when you nail those parts . This amp definitely made me a better player but it’s not for everyone.

    Tip for anyone thinking of getting a vh4. Your guitar MUST BE intonated and tuned properly, or the amp will never sound right. This amp jives with medium output pickups also. Then it's like you've died and got to heaven after that. I love channels 1 2 3 and 4.

    • @jaboozled
      @jaboozled 7 месяцев назад

      As a MKIV owner, and brief owner of the VH4, I feel that they’re 2 entirely different beasts. I owned the VH4 for a few weeks before selling it. It’s a unique voicing that is an acquired taste. Nothing like the Mark series or 5150 sound that I tend to gravitate towards. I couldn’t get the VH4 to sound nearly as thick and aggressive (low end lacked that juicy articulate attack) as a mark/5150/jcm800. I was disappointed and felt like the VH4 is overhyped. But I think it’s just a voicing you either love or hate! Seems like musicians like to blend it with other amps. It might be a volume thing too - some videos online have master at half and channel cranked. That’s insanely loud without an attenuator or load box -> DAW. I think the more traditional mark/5150/jcm/etc sound is better for faster stuff, and the VH4 perhaps for that huge sound and drop D/C riffage.

    • @0megalul309
      @0megalul309 7 месяцев назад

      @@jaboozled agreed. I also have a 1979 jmp 2204 (jcm) totally different sound. I could never gell with the 5150 series. I hated the 5150 stealth el34.
      Had an og peavey 5150, 2 that was a bit easier on my ears, less digital/compressed. Friedman's always sounded like a jcm with a sd1 ts9 boosting it so I never really thought it was worth the price. I like buying amps that have ultra distinctive sounds, not just a jcm Jose mod
      My other amp in the bucket list is a mezzabarbra or a ecstasy, love the bogner grind

I've learned the hard way with ENGL's that have gone down where the nearest ENGL "tech" to me was nearly 3,000kms away. As with their cars they're really good, really reliable...until they're not and then pick the circle of Hell you want to hang out in.

Also, not to bring up an old boring issue, but as amazing as the modellers are, and the convience they bring, you just cannot replicate a proper valve sound like that. It sounds incredible. Oh yeah, that back panel is tricked out hey! VH2 has the VH4 3rd channel right?

      @@LeonTodd far as I'm aware. I can't say I've actually played a VH4 to compare. But from your demos, it sounds quite similar.

      How you liking the VH2? I’d be sad with that trade. Love the Mark tone! Briefly had a VH4, but I guess I gravitate towards the Mark/5150/JCM800 sound, or at least conditioned to prefer those tones with all the famous rock/metal records. 😅
      Edit: Mark IIC+/III definitely lack the channel switching versatility. The IV/V/VII/JP2C are incredibly versatile though!

    Leon now that you have this in your hands, would you do a head to head vs a Fractal FM9 and see what tweaks one can make to get it there? Thanks!
