(No mods required, btw 🤠) Ok, so I've wanted to do a video on my old Deluxe Reverb for a while. I was messing with it and found something out that totally blew my mind (that's not just clickbait in the thumbnail, lol). So, really, why aren't you doing these 5 things?!
0:59 Vol 10 Treb 10 Bass OFF
3:20 Use it as a head
6:54 Check out the normal channel
11:06 Jumper the channels (it DOES WORK, and I figured something out here that is SUPER cool)
18:06 Use my "473" settings with a pedalboard.

What a great solo. Jesus. Thanks for the tips. I personally never had a good chemistry with the Deluxe but I will definitely try these stuff next time I get a chance. Ps.: never heard a GoldTop with P90s with a bad tone in my life! Ha.
Dude. LOVE what you do. I’m not sure I would even call what I do guitar playing in comparison. Haha! Thanks for the shout. 👊🏼
Yes ... Jesus IS my Savior. And that Les Paul was fabulous!
@@JustinOstranderyour 1965 deluxe reverb has the bright cap on the vibrato channel?
Blessed be the name of Jesus.
@@JustinOstrander Oh I would! 🙂
You know, there are a lot of these videos around with slightly click-baity titles. All of them claiming X things you NEED to do with X piece of gear. Most are a huge disappointment... this one wasn't! Awesome vid! 😊
Ha. I get it, but #4 really did blow my mind. 🤠
It’s hard to know what to do on the ol’ RUclips; there are probably lots of people who think this title/thumbnail are trying too hard so they will intentionally not click on it.
I’ve decided to stop obsessing over it and just do what I think is best. My videos are never going to appeal to 100% of people who scroll by. 🤷🏻♂️
# 6 Thing you can do with a Deluxe Reverb : Plug your guitar input One of reverb channel . Plug a second cable into input Two of reverb channel . Plug the other end of second cable into an Echoplex . Connect a third cable from output of the Echoplex into the input One of the first channel . Both channels are now in phase .
Ok I gotta try this!
@@JustinOstranderthat is a great tip! Hey Justin do you play any regular gigs around Nashville? And or can you recommend any must see gigs? Thanks
Most compressors flip the phase also. So you can get parallel compression going with an old-school pedal. The Danelectro Backtalk is another favorite!
I have a vintage deluxe reverb. Tonight I played it at full volume, full treble, and barely any bass, through a 2x12 cab with vintage 30s, and no pedals with my SG. It was awesome. Thanks for that tip.
40 years of owning and gigging my ‘65 Deluxe Reverb… and apart from channel jumping - never thought to try what you’ve just demonstrated…
Thank you so much for a great video - beautifully presented and superb playing.
Great to hear! Thanks!
A real trick getting expert tips from a completely unpretentious pro. Subscribed.
Dude thanks for the sub!
@@JustinOstrander Thanks for the great content! Nice playing.
That is one of the greatest guitar sounds I have ever heard. Sounds like the devil. Perfect.
I’ve always gigged and recorded with Marshall/Vox style amps that are known for grittier tones, and always thought of the Deluxe Reverb as a clean pedal platform. This video has me questioning all that. That amp sounds amazing!
I own a ‘63 Deluxe…… you Sir, have changed my world
I know you can jumper, but I never did because the phase….. but this, this info changes everything
Great tips, thanks. I own a ToneMaster DR which has an attenuator. Last night on a gig I tried the channel jump with volumes on 10 using a regular Tele and a Cabronita. Wow. I rolled the volume back for cleans, then turned it up for solos. What a great sound! It was a nice change from my usual '473 plus a pedal' settings.
I've never heard a deluxe sound so rock and friggin awesome. man, you've got the chops and amazing feel.
so nice to hear a real amp rather than a modeler.
I prefer an amp cranked to a pedal for tone. But screaming sustained leads almost always require some kind of dirt pedal. You did a great job. Thanks for sharing your wisdom and talent with us!
God, I love it that you’re such a natural guy, not trying to sell yourself as a rock-star wannabe… you’re a blessing… I have a stereo setup and just ordered two 65 reverb deluxe amps to add to the lineup, taking your suggestions to heart… would love to have a one-on-one with you, a coffee, but know that’s not likely… just know this: you’re a treasure… many thanks!
Thanks a ton for the kind words! 🍻
@@JustinOstranderpleas you cando this video with your ab165 Bassman pleas🙏🏾🙏🏾
@@rcleon1431 I don't have that circuit, but I will do this with my '64 bassman ASAP!
That first solo you played at 1:52 was so good that I almost fell out of my chair. Beautiful tone and playing
Thanks a ton!
I have my first proper Nashville session on Wednesday and your channel is honestly helping me prep so much, I owe you man.
I have to admit that I never would have believed that a Deluxe Reverb could have such an amazing crunch sound, amazing!
That gold top LesPaul with the P-90s really brought that amp to life, thanks for sharing those tips.
There’s another way to get around the out of phase issue. There are a lot of normal stereo effects pedals that have an inverted second output - maybe even most of them do. A lot of people who are running out and buying special AYB pedals that have reversible phase just for this purpose probably already have something laying around that will do the job.
I love this video! I’m starting to learn that more pedals doesn’t create better tone, it just starts to complicate things and in some cases is adding more noise and hiss. I’ve adjusted my Deluxe Reverb treble between 9-10, Bass to 2, and then adjust my pedals and guitar tone and volume knobs accordingly. I have WAY more dynamics, and my guitar knobs have more range for adjustments. Even with a very bright Tele, I can still roll the tone down on the bridge and it’s perfect! Thank you for sharing.
Hey Justin, FYI, I have been playing guitar for 63 years and Fender amplifiers for 60 years. I have been using those settings since, nearly, day one. In the 60's I played a Twin Reverb, and in the 70's, two Super Reverbs. In '79 I scaled down to a Deluxe Reverb through a 2x12 Fender closed back cab with Electro Voice speakers and the tone was unbelievably good. I still use Fender amps, always play thru two. Outdoors I use a Super Reverb and Dr Z Z Wreck and indoors I use a Deluxe Reverb or Princeton Reverb with a Dr Z Maz 18 or Carr Mercury V. Thanks for sharing our secret settings.
I've been playing a tele and a Les Paul through my Deluxe for about 15 years now. You opened up a whole new sound for me bro! Thanks!
I love this! I was blown away by the tone with no pedals! You’ve inspired me to experiment more with amp tones using fewer pedals. Thanks so much!
My entire rig is a Tele straight into a Blackface Deluxe, thank you for the awesome tips and sharing your wisdom!
Back in the late eighties I bought a ‘64 Deluxe from the late, great Ken Fischer of Trainwreck Circuits, an amp he was selling on consignment. It came with a 12” Rola Celestion Greenback. He did a mind blowing mod to channel one. Once the volume was turned above 2½, it tripled the amp’s output! Ken said he thought it was loud enough to go toe-to-toe with a 50 watt Marshall. It was absolutely terrifying! I brought it to band practice one night, which took place after hours at a friend’s warehouse. I used channel two during rehearsal, but after practice ended, I decided to plug into channel one and crank it. It was unbearably loud-so loud that its cabinet was rattling. After testing it out, I tried a few different distortion pedals with it, but they sounded like crap. At that point I had no idea how tame this beast so I could start gigging with it. Then, one snowy afternoon, I was at a small local music store starting my first day as a guitar teacher. As I was sitting near one of the display cabinets, I noticed that there was a used Scholz Power Soak for sale. The owner (who later became one of my closest friends) told me to take it home and try it, which I did. It turned out to be the perfect solution. In the band I was in, I played both guitar and keyboards. I built a small but powerful stereo “PA” system, mainly for the keyboards. I decided to set the Deluxe on the floor behind me, with the speaker facing the wall. I stuck an SM57 in front of it, choked down the volume with the Power Soak, then ran the mic into my keyboard setup’s mixer. I put my rack mount effects unit into the mixer’s effects loop, and BINGO! Absolute perfection. I used that setup for years without a problem. That Deluxe now occupies a place of honor in my music room.
What's the point of this story?
@@jdl2180Unless you’ve made the acquaintance of a special Deluxe, you wouldn’t understand.
@@billknudson7895 I do have a deluxe reverb reissue with a tone King attenuator. That sounds fantastic in my opinion
Best deluxe reverb video tone tips i've ever seen, thanks! The jumpered reverb tone swap was totally cool and something I hadn't thought of.
I like to run my guitar into the normal channel and put a jumper from input 2 on the normal channel into input 1 of the vibrato channel. Love the tone I get by doing this.
Super vid! I own a 77 Princeton Reverb and a 75 Pro Reverb. Love the tips for jumpering, controls etc.
I own a 1966 Deluxe Reverb. I tried the volume/treble recommendation and you are right!. It sounds really good. I used three guitars - an SG Special w/P90's, an R7 Les Paul and a PRS DGT. All three sounded great, but my absolute favorite is the SG. The P90's really stand out. Thanks for the tip.
Great to hear!
@@JustinOstranderyou can try this on a reissue deluxe reverb please ?
@@rcleon1431 works the same as the old one. the DRRI needs a good speaker though, like an ET65
Just wanted to take a minute and say thank you, I didn't even know you could jumper this amp! Game changer!
I hooked up the jumper, ran pretty hot on the normal the normal channel, low on the vib channel cranked the reverb, it's almost like theres a ducking effect on the reverb. Ran it into my closed back EVM12l... it's a completely different amp! Many thanks!
The one Deluxe Reverb mod I highly recommend is to replace the ext. speaker jack with a Middle pot/knob for the vibrato channel. Every player I’ve done this for has loved it - it makes it so much easier to dial in your tone in all different types of rooms and situations. The mod is not invasive and is fully reversible.
Hola... me puedes detallar esta modificación como la hago y para que sirve por favor ?
This is the BEST, most worthwhile , video I have ever seen on how to use "MY" amp! Thank you sir!:)
The patch cable trick works with a ToneMaster Deluxe too - how cool they kept the phase turn between the channels also in their modelling version!
Thanks for the heads up on the tonemaster!
You're correct. I have a TM
I have the TM. What a great amp. They really are a game changer new style. I hope the other companies catch om
aw hell. That jumped trick is insane!
Very encouraging tips and great playing dude, just got my second DR a couple months ago, after losing mine at the pawn shop in the late 90's.
How have I been on RUclips from the start and just now find your page?! Amazing content dude! You’ve just gained a lifetime subscriber
Loved this episode! I have the '68 Custom. One of the many bonuses of this DR is that the channels are phase aligned. At least that is what I have been told. I still mess with EQ settings for both when I jump them. You can get amazing tones using each of the circuits differently and blending them with volume.
I absolutely 💕 be my Deluxe Reverb. I didn't really know much about them.
But my neighbor had one. I plugged in and I knew very quickly that that was what I had been looking for for 20 years.
Advice I follow that really helps prevent stale tone… turn all the amp settings to zero after ever time you play thru it. Forces you to dial in a new tone every time, you’ll find new sounds, and your playing will respond.
If you carry your deluxe reverb in a soft cover that messes up all your settings when you take it off every time, this is taken care of for you. Haha🤠 cheers!
That lead tone is absolutely gorgeous.
Aint it great that it took a pedal to turn me on to the Deluxe Reverb amplifier! I fell in love with the UAFX Dream 65 pedal and wanted one, then I started checking out the amp that inspired it. Now I want the amp.
Incredible. Found your channel while fiddling with my DR. You sir are not only a monster player, your demeanor is a breath of fresh air. I don’t know how else to say it. Stay well.
Dr Z is in fact bringing people to you.
I searched the tube for Dr Z Brake and instead it gave me you and until I read the other Z comment, I had forgot what brought me here in the first place! I immediately started binge watching your channel. I like the humble with a slab of chops thing you have going.
Absolutely loving your channel Justin! I can’t wait for the family to vacate the home one evening so I can try out all of your advice on my Deluxe. Thank you for all you do!
@leftyshep love your comment on the fam leaving the house! I’m trying to sound proof a room in the basement sos I can crank up a couple of my tube amps more often!😅
Holy shit can you fucking PLAY! It's always session guys with the best chops. Congrats on honing god's gift, brother.
Another fun thing is to go out the output of the reverb pan into the input of channel 1 (with an rca to 1/4" adapter). It's kind of like having a fender outboard spring reverb after the input and eq of channel 2. You get an extra gain stage just on the reverb plus an EQ.
That's awesome. I'll look into it. Cheers!
Mind blown. Never thought of that. 👍🎸
Oh wow. Just tried my 79 deluxe at 10 10 2 with my 1996 r4 goldtop! Presto! Holy cow, been dying to get the deluxe to crank like that. Love it. NO PEDALS PLEASE. Now, the firebird is slightly less robust, however,a sweeter different animal. Love this advice. Thank you. I can't wait to try this with my 74 twin. Ha. Earthquake coming.
very informative tips, love the stories of those session players -- there's definitely some wisdom in playing to the band and making everyone else sound better as a team effort in creating moments for whole song. That darker reverb trick is definitely something I'll have to check out as well.
Holy Crap. Vol on 10, Treble on 10 and Bass on 2! I just tried this with my '71 silverface. What a revelation!!! Amazing. Thanks!
Awesome tips! I run my pro reverb on ten with bass off and treble at 8 and it is mind blowing how good it sounds. I think a lot of the black panel amps will do this. Just adding that the transformers in vintage amps are made to handle plugging an 8ohm into the ext cab while using your in amp speaker at the same time.
I've blown a couple of old Fenders running mismatched loads, so I just don't even touch it. Still, I'll edit out that part of the video. Cheers!
@@JustinOstrander Hey, if that is your experience then it's valid. Maybe I have been lucky. I know the new Custom Pro Reverb is also designed with a transformer that will hop down to 4ohms when the ext cab jack is used, but maybe its just a pro reverb thing.
I have a '77 Deluxe Reverb that is in a MojoTone cabinet. I put in a BF OT and had all the internal stuff (tone caps/coupling caps) changed over to current VINTAGE (what?) replacements. Amp sounded much better. And then a Celestion Black Shadow came to see me and I said, "Welp. I think I will." And I did and great day in the morning, what a sound. It replaced a Super Twin 80 watt Fender speaker and what a difference. Anyway. Nice amps!
Great tips and philosophies. I’ve always used a deluxe on the road and pretty much defaulted to volume 3, treble 5, bass 1-0. Felt somewhat vindicated when you described the pedalboard platform settings haha. Truly excited to plug in and try out tips 1-4. Thanks for this great video!
Outstanding demonstration. The vibrato channel inverted signal when jumped with the normal channel changes the entire tonal structure of the amp, very cool. This should not be confused however with non-reverb amps which are same phase ie: Bandmaster, Bassman, Tremolux) that combining the channels results in more gain, equally awesome, but not the tonal changes heard in this video!
This is a great video! I have been a Deluxe devotee for a long time and these are valuable tips, especially jumpering w/ opposite EQ. But I never tried the V & T on 10, B low .. awesome!! The 4-7-3 setting suggestion is interesting, I'm always using my Deluxe as a pedal platform. Thanks for the valuable tips, Justin.
I used the jumper trick on my 1967 Pro Reverb. I turned the normal channel all the way up for a great overdriven tone and kept the other channel low to dial in a clean reverb.
Great episode! I’m definitely trying those out. You can also do the one wire mod and have verb in both channels. They still sound different but in phase. You can use an A/B box and set one ch for rhy and one for lead.
I like to use a 501 tape echo, or any echo with wet only output, and run the delay to the normal ch in parallel. Post my pedalboard, I use a Radial ABY set for both, run one side to the vibrato channel and run the other side to the echo set for wet only. This lets you add delay to your existing sound. Instead of having to set the mix knob just perfect, you’ll have volume and Eq for the delay and if you put a volume pedal between dealy and amp, you can control the level. It’s like a mono wet dry rig.
Another tip I’ve read is to remove the very first preamp tube and use the vibrato channel. This will give it a little more gain.
I learned how to repair my 60s Deluxe Reverb in 1971. I was 13, played guitar for 7 tears at that point. Put a blues band band together with some current pop to get gigs.
Our lead guitarist was 16 or 17. He said, you should cross channel the inputs. It sounded great. Then a 5 watt resistor fried. So I learned how to repair it. I stopped the coss channel trick. I eventually sold it (shouldn't have done that). Got a Yamaha solid state anp so I could carry it to classrs at Betklee.
I'm sure there was a way to prevent the power resistor from frying but I was just tinkering until I learned electronics. The delux reverb was a great amp. One of my favorites.
Peace
I do that first trick sometimes with my Princeton Reverb
Exactly right, looking for a moment that ends up making everything shine, magic.
Steve Lukather cut the Rosanna solos with a Deluxe.
As well as the rythym tracks for "Beat It"...
Yes!!!
It was heavily modded tho
@@geneparmesan8827 well, obviously. Probably a Rivera modded Deluxe.
Everyone. Used a deluxe in the 80 s 70 s
Great share from end to end. And the bigger lesson for me is just how much we can do with only amp settings and guitar volume controls...without pedals. A great eye(ear) opener.
I wonder if tip 1 will work with a tonemaster or modeling
I was thinking the same thing. I tried the blonde deluxe tone master at Guitar Center and turned it up with the power scaling turned down and volume maxed and really like that tone, but I don’t recall the settings on the bass and treble..
I have a tone master, and it does get a lot of breakup with the volume at 10 with a Les Paul. I usually set it at 4-5 on the treble and 2 on the bass usually. Running at 10 on the treble may be a little too spiky on the Tone Master but it does respond sorta the same. It's a great plug straight in setting and get cleanup with the volume knob on your guitar.
I still have the 1979 Silverface Deluxe Reverb I bought used in 1981 as a teenager (when it wasn't "cool"). Over the years, I modded the normal channel to have reverb/trem and an early Marshall style preamp circuit for much tighter bass. Very pedal friendly channel and in phase with other channel if you want to jumper them.
# 1 seems like the Bonamassa trick. Open up and let it howl is his description, but it is so much more dynamic than that. I have Feb 65 Super and a June 65 DR - ran through a tone bone splitter with this suggestion and GREAT GOOGLY MOOGLY!!! Thanks for the very cool insights.
I'm listening to this driving in my truck out in the rural area around my house. The sounds you get out of that amp/guitar combo make me feel like......."MERICA". Shotgun and rifles on the pickup truck rear window rack, red dirt roads, cornfields, and bass lakes.
Yep. "MERICA"
Watched this again, Justin, and I REALLY appreciate your ideas and the kind and humble way in which you present them ... Good on you, Sir! God bless.
This is one of the best videos I have seen in a very long time. Great tone tips, but even better advice for playing in a real world band context. Thanks.
I love jumping the channels like an old plexi. You get a variety of sounds out of it.
Thank you so much for the tips! I always have been a Marshall guy or a Head/Cab guy and I bought 64 Fender Custom DR couple of years ago hoping that it would be my grab&go pedal platform combo for small gigs. I was mainly disappointed with the sounds I was getting. I ended up not playing it for almost a year and recently put it on the market. After watching your video, I tried the lead setting (V:10, T:10, B:0) and used it like a head (DR -> Fryette Power Station -> Suhr 2x12 Cab with Creamback) and OMG. Never ever thought I was going to get pure hard rock tone from DR. I’m going to try with a 1x12 cab I have and I’m also going to try pedal platform setting so I could love this amp! I’m so glad I watched your video. Thank you!
Was a toss up between a deluxe and a supersonic 22. Your video has me leaning for the deluxe now! Super playing my friend
As others have said, it's great to see a guitar player without the hype, nice playing and Great Deluxe tips... you have it singing.
I'm going to try these out on my 73 vibrolux. Great video
Long time Deluxe Reverb player and I totally appreciate everything you said, Fantastic clip and super informative.
Drop d is for deluxe! Thank you for doing this video. I had noooo clue my deluxe could do all these things
Some of these tricks I knew about, but in a not so extreme way. Invaluable tips 100%!!! Thank you. Additionally I've found the tone while attenuated on these setting is much better than attenuated tone with more "normal" settings. Huge bonus there. My interest in my drri is renewed twofold.
I can’t like this video enough! Been playing a Twin Reverb for over 30 years and have never tried a few of these tips. Brilliant advice, and I really appreciate your sincere delivery. Good job, man.
All around fantastic job!
Great tone and amazing playing.
I usually lean Marshall but those tone you dialed in… now I got to get a Fender D!
Dig your channel brother!
Oh that electric guitar solo that you played at the beginning was just beautiful! I love a good rock song. hopefully whoever was singing that song is a guy with a great voice.
One of the best rock tones on RUclips IMO. Wow. Thanks for that!
Thank you Justin. I learned of the "turn down the bass" thing from a Robben Ford video, where he had the amp at vol and turned up the bass where it just presented itself. Likewise with treble as well. Thank you for your perspective and info sharing! As such, I love the amazing talent that is on YT. Some videos with the bass high, or massive gain may not work well in a live situation or recording session, however they come across so full and insane as a single instrument on YT. So the crafting and time for what is played perfectly is based on those EQ/gain settings and "possibly" not usable in a live or recording process. Of course this depends on one's interpretation, need, and genre etc...
I have 2. the clarity these amps have is amazing. I started running both of mine into 2 4\12 marshall cabs. great tips
Holy crap! #4 is actually AMAZING! I knew you could jump the channels and I mean yeah it’s cool, but I never did the extreme EQ setting to brighten the verb. Thanks!!
Yes, this is really, really cool. Very informative. Love this kind of insight that helps get more out of what one already has. Thank you.
I had learned about volume and treble on 10 and bass off from BB King. It works great. Best sound I ever had was Deluxe reverb ran through Marshall 4 speaker cabinet. I never even thought to use normal channel. I have used both channels with a splitter had no id I could jump from the input. All very good ideas. Sounds great. Subbed.
Thanks a ton! Totally agreed on the Deluxe Reverb into a Marshall cab. It’s killer.
Thx for this. Have a '64 DR and it's sweet as can be. But these tips are gold! So easy to get locked into one or a couple settings.
Great stuff, thanks. I'm a tone freak and I'm always looking for tips and tricks.
Thank you JO!! Favorite channel of the year
these are great tips for this amp (and amazing playing)...he's not wrong about dialing back the low end when recording (and in general)...you just need more mid-range and less bass to sit well in mix (recording or live)...
It is difficult to find a Barber Launchpad but I found this article which lists many common pedals that reverse phase. As soon as I return home I will try my Xotic EP booster. Many thanks for the info!!!
I didnt know JT passed until now.
Justin, pretty sure i worked with you at the Q when you got into town over a decade ago.
I would like to echo, JT was one of the nicest session guys, or guys in general, I've ever come acrossthe man could do so much with so few.
He carried a quarter of the gear, or better, than other guys.
But he got the *song*
He wouldnt be lead, on occasion at the Q, but his impact was always there, polite and subtle enough to direct the room. And the room, regardless of roll call, obliged.
He was one of my favorites, not just players, but persons. Damn.
Absolutely correct, in a mix you need to cut bass. Correct chord voicing as well when playing rhythm. Most people though, play with themselves lol me included. Luckily I had a few years when I was younger playing with a group.
Dear lord this sounds FANTASTIC!
Thank you for this information!
That first solo was the best I've heard in a long time.
This was very insightful, struggling with dialing in my tone with my les paul and keeping hopping from amp to amp. these tips and settings are very helpful. thank you !
Wow I thanks Justin, I had no idea, I’ll have to go buy one again now. Love the sounds, love your playing too. Brilliant !
I've always been much more of a Fender than a Marshall man. For every Marshall I've owned five Fenders and they've done me a lot good. The Deluxe Reverb is great. Can't go wrong. And a superb pedal platform.
I had no idea I could this much with my amp. Thank you so much!
Thanks Justin!!! I have a hand wired Deluxe and now have new things to try!
I always felt embarrassed when turning the bass down on the Deluxe. Now I can do it with pride.
I tried putting the volume at 10, treble at 10 and bass at about 2 on a Fender Deluxe Reverb Tone Master (into Normal channel 1 with a Les Paul). Wow, what a great overdriven tone!!!
I have a new black face 65 re-issue Deluxe Reverb that I use to play my new Duesenberg Split-King lap steel through. I don' have an electric guitar anymore. The Split King has two pickups and both have a hum bucker and P-90 on each of the pickups. Hence Split King. It is a beautiful instrument and I hope to lear to play. Back in the day or early 70's in any rock in roll days, I had a 1967 Les Paul Deluxe Sunburst playing through a Fender Twin stacked on top of a 4x12 Bassman cabinet. That sob put out some sound and I thought I was Jimmy Page. I am 71 years of age now and learning the lap steel. I may have to start out play Mary had a little lamb.
Brilliant! Have to try these tips the next time I encounter a Deluxe Reverb out in the wild!
Love this video, tried the treble to 10 and bass to 2 deluxe setting on my vintage Princeton reverb and it sounds great. Today I will try plugging it into some of my other combo amp cabinets.
