Clearly from the thank you's above, I had a lot of help on this one, :).
This is my personal experience using the Fender Deluxe Tone Master and 64 Custom Deluxe Reverb Amps. It is NOT a paid promotion in any way. It is simply my experience with the amps and ....it was a good one. I look forward to hearing your experiences as well. I read all the comments and enjoy everyone that is a part of five watt world.
    Thanks for watching.
    Keith

I've been a Marshall guy all my life, I started wanting to try different flavors, so I brought a Vox AC 10, and boutique amp a Cusak king snake, They were great but I still wasn't happy, My amp guy said, Dude get a Fender Deluxe reverb and be done with it... So I got a 68 reissue, with blue tolex, and cremeback M, And I haven't looked back since....

Great video. I've always had the same philosophy as Zac and I make sure to bring a backup amp. I'd do the same with the new amps, tube or modeling.
One thing I do know is that now that you've gone this far, you need to go all the way and borrow some vintage fender blackface amps, Keith! I searched for years for THAT sound and I finally got it with the acquisition of two amps with in a few months of each other: early '68 blackface circuits, a Deluxe and a Super. There is just something special there. I played a '74 DR and '65 Bassman for over a decade...they were close but it's the AB763 circuit that has the magic!

My first amp was a 1964 Fender Deluxe (non reverb) which I bought used in '83 for $200. I still play through it every day, in fact the tubes have been toasty for hours now. I used to haul a Marshall stack around because I thought I needed to, but for the last few years it's just the old Deluxe. I underestimated her for decades!

I had a Fender Vibrolux Amp back in 1966 in my Teenage years, loved it but didn't know much about distortion, so bought the pedal "Fuzztone", trying to emulate Jimmy Hendrick's and Eric Clapton. After entering the Navy, while away on deployment someone stole that amp and my 1966 Fender Strat. Many years later 1993 later while going through divorce, picked up a Fender Princeton Chorus with 2x10" Jensens. The Princeton Chorus Solid state was great with all the additional features like Gain, Limiter, Presence and Mid Boost where I could dial in distortion and not have high volume. That amp lasted until 2005 when it stopped working and I was moving, gave it away. Since then have been using Line 6 amps. First a 2000 POD unit that was awesome. Then went bigger with a Flextone HD using Tubetone amp modeling. I used two 4x12 cabs and it was awesome too. Later as the years passed 2015 used a Line 6 Spider V and now have the Line 6 Spider V 240 HD MKII with one 4x12 cab. I also picked up from Reverb a Line 6 Flextone HD head 20 plus years old that still works great and just recently bought a Fender Princeton Chorus Amp Used from Guitar Center, 30 plus years old and it still works great. I never owned a Marshall or any other amps, just Fender and Line 6. I now have 20 songs out on all the Music Streaming Sites with my latest release "Every Now and Then".

Its amazing to me how many guitarist are only just discovering the Deluxe Reverb now. I started out on a solid state Fender Sidekick reverb back in the 80s THINKING it was one of those classic amps. I stumbled across a 65 reissue for an insanely low price, snagged it, sold the Sidekick and never looked back. It became THE amp that I would test ANY gear on to find out what it really sounded like. When I think guitar tone, this is it.
Weight or not, its just the best, reasonably priced tube amp on the planet. I will say though, your comments on that Blonde Deluxe tone master have me thinking, maybe my 65 needs a brother... :)

Now that I have a house the 6 watts is about right; actually still a little too loud. One watt tube is perfect. The deluxe reverb would be really pretty in my little gear corner but it would still be way too loud for what I need. I’m looking forward to checking out that new fender vibroverb that’s coming out; 5 watts fender tube for about $750

You asked for anyone who hauled a JBL-equipped Twin. Here! Mine was/is a 74 Silverface with master volume. When it had JBLs the brightness would tickle the inside of your eardrums when set clean but luckily I had an LPB-1 booster and the master vol to smooth things out a bit. One point it had been bounced by the crew and the whole cabinet wobbled left to right and the baskets had both broken off the surround. I guess that was my cue to downsize - to a Hiwatt 50 and Marshall 1960! Thanks for your calm readings Keith.

At 53, I am first and foremost a tube amp guy. The older the better. Fender Electric Instruments, all the way (I would own one if I didn't live a stone's throw from the beach, but you know what I mean). I have a 65 reissue that sounds fantastic, even with all the salt air rust to accompany. In reality, I'm more of a wannabe than an active local guitar slinger (sad). What I use daily for practicing in an apartment, is a Fender Champion 20. It was very affordable, and VERY light weight. It has many great, vintage amp sounds and effects that change as easily as turning a knob. I'm pretty sure it would easily cut through the band mix in a bar (20 watts I believe). And, it has a 3.5mm jack for headphones! Brilliant. Long story long; if I was a pro, I would play a vintage tube amp, and keep a Tone Master in the wings as a back up (we can't all afford to have the Setzer, dual Bassman rig).

  • @dariusliadon
    @dariusliadon 3 года назад +1

My current rig is based around a Blackstar HT-5R and it rarely comes of the overdrive channel as its clean channel is really lackluster. Because of this, when I needed to track a cover of The Doors' Light My Fire for my studio apprenticeship a few years ago, I borrowed a friend's '68 Custom Reissue Deluxe. I absolutely fell in love with this amp. It doesn't have the Marshally drive of the Blackstar I dearly love, but those cleans are just perfect. They're bright and crystal clear, but remain very warm and lively. The spring reverb is in a league of its own and while in general I prefer the smoother pulse of a bias tremolo, the Deluxe's optical tremolo isn't too choppy and is really nice at lower depth settings. If I could, I'd do a two amp setup, with a Deluxe for my cleans and the HT-5R for the drive, and I'd be a very happy camper.

I lugged around a 1977 Twin (not considered a very desirable amp) to gigs for years because it was what I had and I couldn't afford a variety of different amps at that time-one of those "too big is a fit" situations . I used a clean boost and a Tube Screamer in front of it and could get decent sounds at not ear crushing volumes. I switched to a Deluxe Reverb 11 years ago and since then I have picked up a Princeton, Vibrolux, Pro Reverb, '59 Bassman, and various other non-fender amps. I don't use the Twin for gigs anymore, not because it doesn't sound good, but because it's just so heavy-given the choice of hauling a Deluxe/Vibrolux/Pro Reverb or a Twin up and down multiple flights of stairs I'm going to go with the lighter amp. Interestingly, during the many years I used the Twin I was often complemented on my tone, many times from other guitar players who erroneously thought I was using a Vibrolux or Pro Reverb. When I said it was a Twin they were surprised. I think you can get a lot out of most gear if you learn how to make it work for you. ; )

Great video, as always. I love my original TM Deluxe with the firmware update. It's still too big for my tiny house, and when I'm home, I fire up the Deluxe Reverb patch I've made on the PodGo through my monitors or headphones, but when I meet my friends for a jam, the TM does it all: smallish spaces, my buddy's garage, or the Sunday jams in the big open spaces of the auditorium at the high school where I teach. I always smile to myself when I see my buddy lugging his 50lb AC15 around, although that amp sounds great too.

I just visited my friend a long way from here and he had a 63’ deluxe reverb, the one without a Fender badge. He’s an amp tech and has many pristine old Fenders. He sent this when I got back home...”I think it's interesting that you picked the '63 deluxe reverb that has what now is considered a low-fi 1967 12" Jensen speaker that was meant for a Hammond organ. It fucking ripped ass - listening to it”
I usually play through more modern Marshall DSL’s and high gain tube amps.
When I plugged into that 63’ I got lost in a wash of pure tone heaven that inspired me to play completely differently that what I usually do. It was so harmonically rich I didn’t desire anything else. Then he said hit one of your overdrives (Strymon Riverside, or an OCD. Good gravy man! It was like the tone was being spun by angles.
    Those things are magical man.

Another illuminating video. Thank you. It helped me to make up my mind to dive back into the world of owning an amp, and not just using headphones. I grabbed a blonde tonemaster deluxe reverb that came up for sale. What a revelation. Running a helix into it for effects or some preamps it’s simply sublime. And surprisingly capable of higher gain tones. I’m typically only on the lowest attenuation setting, and it’s still flipping loud. Sometimes even with volume knob barely above one. I think in my house it’s a definitely a point two five watt world.

Fender amps have always been fantastic. My first was a '64 Twin Reverb. Now I am growing fond of push pull 6v6's. I always preferred my 2x6973's but vintage tubes are through the roof! Love the hand wired Fenders!

I had a Fender Super Twin (6-6L6's) with 2 JBL 12's that I gigged with in the late 70's. It was so loud, it could melt the paint off the cars in the club parking lot. I swear that amp is the reason I have disc problems with my back now, not to mention the tinnitus.

Sir, “Bada Bing”...you are the man. Thank you for another great video 👍🏼. Perfect comparison of all three amps. Answered all my questions. Like you I have and do own other blackface fenders or other brands but never owned a Deluxe Reverb. Fave was always the Vibrolux Reverb but as gigs and jam sessions becoming quieter and thanks to this video I think a deluxe is in my near future. I do use a Headstrong Lil King S 1x12 with 6L6 output @ approx 28 Watts but it just doesn’t have that Fender “snap” or attack in the front end.
Voiced close to a 64 Princeton Reverb it’s on the warmer side of things. It can accept many other output tubes including 6V6 dropping the output. The Custom shop Deluxe Reverb may be the ticket. Thank you again...sorry so wordy, toooo much coffee this morning Lol.
    And then !
PS-Is the Revv amp still in the stable post Deluxe discovery?

    Very nice video! Thank you!
Like a month ago I bought my first Deluxe Reverb and wow I was in shock when I tested it! It sound amazing but what I REALLY LIKE is that this amp sounds thick and it could sound very clean and bright but in the same time like dark and that is something that I like alot especially because I use alot distortion.

bought an open-box “used” custom 64 hand-wired princeton a few months ago. it’s killer. i’ve played a few superb vintage bfp’s in the last few years-a friend collects and he’s very picky. this sounds as good as those.
without the endless maintenance hassle and expense.
i don’t love the tonemasters but the tweaked blonde deluxe sounds noticeably better imo

Excellent video, as always. I have a Twin Reverb I keep for nostalgia and for playing loud when needed and a Princeton that I play 90% of the time. I'm thoroughly happy with both amps but I see the attraction of a Deluxe Reverb. Has the virtues of the other amps with few of the vices!

I'm with you on avoiding the weight of the real originals. I no longer can lift the '64 Twin Reverb I had back then. The van we used was an old ice-cream freezer truck with a floor bed at about waist height so humping that beauty up there was ok at age 25, we even had a Hammond B3 with Leslie that took a few of us to get it on-board. Now I'm considering selling my Hot Rod Deluxe and go digital modeler. Thanks for the run-down on the Deluxe Reverb, it could be just the thing for me. Cheers, sideman

Thanks for another excellent, well done video! Regarding whether to buy the Tone King, Reissue, Custom Handwired, or original 1960s; a fifth option is to buy the re-issue, bring it to a competent local amp tech, and pay to have the Reissue converted to handwired. I’ve done this with a twin, reverb, reissue, and a deluxe reverb re-issue; I have essentially brand new hand wired Amps with quality components, and the combined price of the original amp purchase, and the upgrades is less than either buying a new handwired amp from Fender, or 1960s original model. Maybe it’s me, because I’ve been carrying these amps around all my adult life, but I do not think the tube versions of the Twin Rev, or Deluxe Rev, are especially heavy… and I’m officially old.

Great video Keith I love your videos. I have a Princeton reverb made in 1964, I put it in a head cabinet so it's smaller. I bought it in 1979. I have a 10-inch speaker cab and I have another cabinet with an EV 12 inch speaker. I take the 10-inch speaker to small gigs or stay at home and the electro voice 12in which is much more efficient and puts out a very loud sound when I need more. With both speakers running the thing screams. I love my Princeton reverb I'm never getting rid of it and I don't even need a back up cuz it runs perfectly I have rewired it and I'll keep it for the rest of my life. But, I might consider a Deluxe it is the only other fender amp I would consider but I don't need one I'm happy with my Princeton thanks

As a longtime player and teacher in LA, I always appreciate your straight to the point vids. Have slogged thru a lifetime of amps, always Fenders, and have a good seasoned view of many. My personal favs were browns, Concerts and, especially, Pros. A cranked Pro (non-reverb) thru a '54 Gold Top is hard to beat. We guitarists are never satisfied, always chasing the Grail. After trying 15-20 RI 65 DRs, I found a great one. But when a mint, one owner '64 fell into my lap, well, contest over. Covers all the bases, nice tight sound, we're at one. Sorry, not one to share but this struck a note.

Thanks for the great video, Keith! I had an original tonemaster deluxe for a year and it was such a great amp in my apartment. But I was offered a '66 deluxe reverb a few months back for a decent price and couldn't refuse. Wanted to try a vintage version for awhile and now I'm in a house where I can turn things up a bit more. So I sold the tonemaster to fund the purchase. And of course, had to sink a few hundred into the '66 to get it up to snuff. Vintage gear indeed costs $$$$ in upkeep. I'd like to get a TM again and will wait for used bargain. I really think they are the best buy in amps going right now.

I have a 65 DRRI i bought $600 from an eBay estate liquidator. It didn't sound like the original hand wired 65 I played in the music store at a teen in 67. I did a lotta research on Linda Rhondstat's DR mods and Don Felders DR and bought the Fromell Supreme mod kit which sweetened the tone stack. I swapped out the speaker to what Don Felder of the Eagles used a Celestion G12H anniversary and put a Mullard 12AT7 in the pre amp slot a Phillips 12AU7 in reverb slot now its gloriously sweet. For my Bedroom I have a DR Tone Master I really like for the weight. I will upgrade the firmware to the cream TM. Thanks for the tip. I also have a BOSS Katanna 50 with custom patches for pedal sounds . Thanks for the video.

Hi. I have a '65 vintage amp that I use all the time. I also have an excellent tech near by that can fix absolutely anything in that old amp. I use my amp like Leo intended. I play it at gigs, I haul it around in a slip cover, I crank that thing up and it rocks every time. It requires very little maintenance actually, but it's a tool and I don't care about its "vintage value". I don't buy things to sit and look at them. lol. Just a side note, please check out Psionic's assessment of the new hand wired Fenders. He was mostly unimpressed for an amp that costs that much. He also has some reviews of the Tone Masters. Interesting point of view from a guy that fixes amps everyday. Thanks for your excellent content.

Hey, Keith. Watching this video really got me thinking. I think we are from the same era, just different genres. (HS grad 1987). Your study on the Deluxe Reverb really spoke to me.
When I was in my early teens (early 80s) my folks divorced. And in his obvious mid-life crisis :) my dad bought a 70s Quad Reverb. Damn, I loved that thing. I used it for playing my guitar, making my own "mix tapes" using the outputs to my Hi-Fi creating 8 track recordings when it was just really adding a take on top of a cassette playing through, to DJ-ing for Jr High and HS parties.
Even though I went through a 20+ year hiatus in playing, your video reminded me that Fender amps are really part of MY history.
    Thanks for that.

The DR as always been my go to amp. I purchased a reissue several years back and had it modified to the specs of an original black face. The mod also made the amp more touch sensitive. Hence, I got the tone with reliability 🙂. I have purchased different amps but I end up selling them after a while and returning to my DR.

That was the clearest, no BS comparison of the venerable Deluxes I've heard - thanks. Too Big Is A fit is exactly what I was thinking when I bought the Twin Tone Master when it first came out. I will have to see if there is a digital mod or even a need to do that to the Twin. Also, I like the company you keep - I watch all of your cohorts on a regular basis and TrueFire has been my source of "learning" for a long time (just wish I had the discipline to match. Thanks Keith for your wonderful insights into the TM DR amps and the Custom DR. I myself after moving around a Twin Reverb RI from gig to gig for the past 20+ years, hardly turning the volume above 4 and hurting my back in the process decided to try out the TM DR (Cream version) and have never looked back. Love it to bits....at home I pair it with the Twin and the sound is awesome, when I need to play out I virtually throw the virtual amp in the car and off I go. Thanks for the videos Keith. Love your content. Cheers Marty from Melbourne🇦🇺
