3 things you NEED to do with your Princeton Reverb Amp

- (No mods required, btw 🤠) Just wanted to see how well the tips in my Deluxe Reverb video apply to the Princeton Reverb. So, why aren't you doing these things?!
I'm playing nearly the same solo off the top of my head as I did at the top of the Deluxe Reverb video just for comparison's sake.
0:00 Intro
0:50 Tip #1: 10 Treb 10 Bass ≤3
2:30 same solo as an example
3:40 Tip #2: Use it as a head
5:35 Tip #2.5: You can fit a 12" speaker in this cabinet
8:08 Tip #3: Use my "473" settings with a pedalboard. (Maybe start at 4 on the volume; 6 can have a bit too much breakup on many Princeton Reverb amps)
14:30 Will this work on YOUR amp?

15:09 Such GOOD advice!!! That's the musician I want to be and you won my sub!
Thanks a ton, and welcome aboard!
Absolutely - he has always made it clear that this channel is about being in the moment. You are in the right place.
I tried it on my Princeton reverb after your deluxe video and it worked perfectly. I love the tone tips, thanks.
So glad I stumbled on your channel. Amazing tone, I can’t wait to try the settings on my deluxe.
Tremendous channel, you deserve much more recognition for what you do. Thank you so much!
Another great video! That fuzz tone was incredible. Good stuff and great info once again. Thank you so much. 🙂
Glad you dig it!
Sounds amazing. Love the fluidity of your phrasing.
Great stuff! I used my deluxe cranked on a session recently and it sounded great. Turning the bass down was the trick. Thx
I subscribed about 2 weeks ago when I stumbled upon your "dad band review" video. To your point; there are a billion YT channels about gear, lessons, etc. So what I really dig about your channel is you talk about your experiences in the realm of music. And I really enjoyed hearing your insight on the dad band submission. Great channel, please keep it up!! Oh and I will contribute some of my experiences with a Hot Rod Deluxe. I used to run it as a head, through a Genz-Benz 212 Flex. It really opened it up, and enjoyed doing that for a few years. But I'm now running a Celestion Alnico Creamback, as a combo amp now. While the Creamback does break up quickly (as expected), I don't run it for gain/distortion. Was looking for more of a Strat, straight into the combo, and that has been working out great.
Omg those tones!!! Heavenly
Awesome tips thank you. I have a Headstrong Lil King and your settings resulted in killer lead tones! I also have a Rivera Stage 2 mod Deluxe….gonna play with some of your suggestions also like ext cab! Thanks again for doing what you do.
Hey man, you sound like the real deal, both what you say and most importantly how your music sounds, i.e great! I have a Princeton I was not overly thrilled for rock sounds, until I tried your tip #1......hello! Thank you sir and I look forward to you sharing more of your wisdom.
I just discovered that volume up bass down thing a couple days ago even though I've owned this amp for over two years. Yup. I'm an idiot. Also..there's nothing country about me and I could listen to you play all day long! Great channel. keep up the good work
Love your playing and tone. The tip #1 made me want to go out buy a Princeton and P90 loaded Les Paul. Dangit!
Great follow up video, thanks Justin
I still remember your fender amp from the 90's. Good stuff, led me to my hot rod deluxe amp.
I tried this on my 80 Princeton Reverb after watching the Deluxe Reverb video and it does work great. With a Torpedo Captor X I can finally get the amp up to that level - game changer.
Pedal setting also works great - thanks!
I was watching a Carol Kaye interview in which she said the same thing concerning scales v. chord tones. She went on to demonstrate some of the things she played on and it was so tastefully quirky and musical. I was still dubious that the concept would be valid for all types of music until I heard her playing with Joe Pass. I'm no longer dubious. Fantastic sounds, Justin. I've been in the process of designing and/or copying a tube amp circuit and I've been on the fence about which direction to go. Your Princeton and Deluxe Reverb videos have helped me make up my mind.
Thats some tone brother ! Perfect to my ears 😎👍
Great video, thanks! I really enjoyed the one on the Deluxe, too.
I have a 63 non reverb Blackface Princeton. Awesome amp. I have is set up with an original Vox G12 blue Celestion. I bought the amp in 1969-70. I did a lot of mods, I was teaching myself using that, long before it was a vintage amp. I home record guitar and bass through it.
I love your motto. It fits with my philosophy when playing with others. You have one more subscriber 👊🏼👍🏼
Sweet tone Justin!
Alright, THIS is the best Black panel PR out there. Great Job!
Hey Justin, familiar with your work for quite sometime, but only recently discovered your RUclips channel. Lot of great content for guitar players with studio tans. Keep up the great work!
Welcome aboard! And thank you!
That is some killer sound!! Thanks!!!
Just stumbled on your channel! You are very humble and I like the way you do your videos. Very clear. Yes I subscribed.
Welcome aboard! 👊🏼
It might of went off topic of this video, but your rambling at the end is very interesting
I enjoy your podcasts. I am always searching to improve the sound I get out of my amp. I have always been an acoustic musician until recently, but I wasn’t good with the amps and never satisfied with the sound I was getting. Thanks
Thanks for hitting the PR - to me better than the DR- but both good at what they do. Question- can you show us the mysterious garage and how you run amps altogether? I get it may not be much to see but in the little things you see, you learn- I keep liking this channel more and more- thanks, Justin!
Turning out to be a sleeper channel. Awesome Justin. Love this! Thanks
Thanks!
Hey, Justin! Love the video (and the one for the Deluxe, too). Roy Blankenship built me a Princeton years ago and put a 10” Eminence Patriot in it. It’s awesome. Might be a cool option if your current speaker bites the dust, and Eminence sells a package of IRs of that speaker pretty cheap so you can check it out without committing too much!
Which Patriot do you have? There seem to be a few
I love 10s in my old PRs. My favorite amps. Most reliable amps I’ve ever had too - along with my 50s Supro 1x8.
Great playing and vibe..
Great video! Would love to hear more about how you view the fretboard. Thank you.
Love that Goldtop, it's full of character.
Agreed!
A Celestion gold 10” speaker is so great in a PR. Have one in mine and it lacks nothing. Sounds incredible. Great video. My favorite amp of all time. ❤
I gotta try it sometime. Thanks!
Sweetwater had a re-issue with a "12 Cannabis Rex that sounded pretty sweet. I don't know how it'd work out with the volume pegged, though.
Sounds beautiful
Great stuff Justin, I have a ragen cagen in my Princeton love it
Can you tell me what you like about it and is it a 10"or12".
Your tone tip really nailed it. Check out a Tone Tubby Humbolt 12" hemp Alnico and change the coupling cap on pin 6, plate on triode B to .001uf on V3 12AX7 to tighten up a 12" speaker. I also change the 100k slope resistor to an 82K and an 8K in series (works out to be a 90k slope resistor) for better dynamics and more volume. The Princeton is so much easier to hulk around than the Deluxe is and it has sweeter tone.
Justin- you and I have very similar styles. Thanks for putting this PR video out, you’re speaking my language
Right on! Thanks a ton for the sub. More to come!
Just got a Princeton reverb yesterday and already wanted to use it as a head
Nice!
I've been impressed with the Eminence Ga10-sc59 alnico 10 and the Ga10-sc64 ceramics. Made for George Allesandro. I have an older Throbak od boost too. Great pedal. Stacks good with my fuzzes and stuff.
Looking forward to seeing the instructional materials.
Great tips for the Princeton, I have a Tweed Special Ed. Princeton Reissue. It came with a 12" Can Rex Hemp cone speaker, which was swapped out for a 12" Celestion Neo Creamback. I also modded the little amp a bit, adding a Fromel supreme mod kit, NOS RCA black plate rectifier, Allen Amplification OT. I also have experimented with various preamp tubes, JJ, RCA, Tung Sol, Mullards etc. Currently I am using Genealex Gold Lion 12ax7's, Telefunken 12at7. I will try using as a head as soon as I am able to build or find a cabinet. Hmm ... 1 x 12 or 2 x 12 ?? Thanks for all the great content. As always, wonderful playing Justin !!
I have one of those mojotone speakers in my ‘68 Prince. They sound pretty good. I also use a 2 twelve cab with it. Celestion loaded Bassman cab tipped from landscape to portrait if you will. I also use that cab with a Boogie Studio 22 as a head.
I'm with you Justin, I tried a 12" speaker in my PR build and went right back to the 10.
what 10!!??
@chrisrocco6429 Eminence Ragin Cajun. If I want a 12 I plug into an extention cab. IMO a 12 sounds better in a DR or bigger cab than in the PR. JMO
Did I just see some magic at 5:10 ;). Nice edit 😊
Haha yep!
Great video Justin! I pretty sure I'm the only guy in Nashville that has managed to make a Princeton sound terrible with pedals. That being said, I do dig recording a Princeton and just cranking it! Sounds great!
I highly HIGHLY doubt that, my friend!
Yep, you're getting some dang good tone.
Killer tones and chops. Makes me really miss the silver face PR I had for my first amp back in the 90s. I think i bougt it and then sold it for $100
Great tone, love it! - Could you please be a bit more specific concerning the speaker you prefered? :)
What a fantastic video have a good day
Another excellent video thanks!. Princeton Reverb is one of the ultimate amps. Great not only in the studio or in rehearsals, it is great live on small gigs, AND mic'd on big gigs. Soundmen and bandmates (especially singers) LOVE IT when you use a good Princeton. Great for keeping stage volumes pleasant. (Unless you play in a band of Gorillas and Neanderthals, then you may need to bring a Deluxe Reverb.😉) You NEED to get a BF or SF; the Reissues are brittle-sounding, and don't have the characteristics of the vintage ones. I tried them and was sorely disappointed.
It really is such a great amp. I’ve used reissues that sound good, too. Cheers!
Probably just needed the speaker broken in? Brittle. Not mine. Phffff
Great video! ✌️
Thanks a ton man!
@@JustinOstrander 👍
that guitar sounds ridiculously good
Hi Justin, I would absolutely give the newer Jensen Blackbird 40 10" a shot with a Princeton.
It has a stronger AlNiCo than usual, which makes for AlNiCo sweetness in the top end, while keeping the bass tight, almost or just like a ceramic.
The voice is the classic vintage vibe, but with a wider range of useful tones.
It's absolutely worth a try once or before your Eminence gives up the goods.
Btw. I LOVE your playing. Marvelous!
Thanks a ton for the kind words!
@heikofister9739 have you tried the Blackbird 10? I have the 12” in a 1980 Fender 30 1x12 combo, which is like a Deluxe Reverb on steroids, and man, that’s maybe the sweetest speaker I’ve ever come across! Totally superb. Perfect link between vintage and modern. I just ordered a Celestion V-Type Junior 10” for my 65 Princeton Reverb, but eventually, might like to settle on the Blackbird 40 watt Jensen, if it’s as good as the 12” version, which still blows me away every time…
@@HamzaVLOGs unfortunately I had no chace playing zu the 10" yet. It's on my list.
That P90 sound is Killer 🙃🥰
I don't have the conditions to turn up to 10 but now I am going to have to figure out a way to do it. This sounds great.
Extension cab, OX box, two notes, other cab sim/load boxes. They’re getting better and better. I find that I don’t mind the modeling if it’s just on the speaker/mic/room sounds end of things.
@@JustinOstrander - gotcha - what I didn't make clear? - I don't have a place I can turn the volume up to 10, can't get away with it. Thanks for quality of your content.
9:25 - I rarely use that much drive but I love this.
Love ur channel, great info, you answered many of my questions. Thanks, till next video. I hope you get players take not of this. They may find that you don’t need all the pedals. Also what do you think of the Fluxtone speaker system
Sub'd! Great stuff!
Thanks a ton! More to come 🤠
Awesome playing!!
If can cranking is the way to go and then control evrything from guitar. Btw Rocking a 12 Warehouse G12CS in mine great speaker for more headroom and getting louder
Very cool. I tried a G12C, but I need to try the S version.
@@JustinOstrander Yeah the C is to bright for my taste. The CS with the smooth cone plenty bright but not that piercing bright. Keep it going love the video's!!
So funny... The Princeton was just a step up from the Champ back in the day. Never considered a real user. We used them in studio settings
for certain things. But it was always the Deluxes, supers and Twins that got the job done. But they were easy to move around and if there just MR and
Trbl EQs called for, the Princetons saved your back. It was always your good relationship with a music store to go and borrow one. As they
were considered student amps. I think off the floor they cost around $175. And look at the hype and cost now. Little 10". Amazing !!!!
Bet it sounds good in your garage!
Thanks!
Had a BF Super/Green Echoplex/Mutron III/ stereo cable/ 1958LesPaulCustom. I ran the settings Brite/3/10/10/3/Reverb 3 and MutronIII 12;30. Basically the set you are using except Mutron is used to boost. People used to say "Where you hiding the Marshal?" Those were the days when all that great gear was just "USED" in WantAds.
Holy Tone blown Batman! Wow.
Thanks for sharing....
I have a july 65 I used to plug in a single sealed 12 into the extension leaving the 10 plugged in too. Loud. Great for bands
This awesome! I’m always confused by how people crank the volume on their amps with the bass up high. It’s so flubby and farty. I understand that this is all subjective, and that some people like a farty flubby sound. Even if it wasn’t flubby, I still find all that bass so unnecessary for guitar. To each their own.
What a guitar sound.
I have a 65 blackface Princeton which came with a 12" spkr. I have an ext. cab with another 12", and the combination makes it sing out noticeably better. Oh yeah, the reverb hasn't worked for years, in spite of my having several amp techs to fix it. But I have external reverb which is more controllable anyway. Along the way, the original transformer quit, and was replaced with one from a Deluxe so it may have some extra headroom because of that.
Hey Justin, it's Don again and once again you are preaching to the choir. I put a 12 inch speaker in my Princeton Reverb years ago and use the same settings as on my Deluxe Reverb as I commented on your last video. I have a 4X12, a 2X12 and a couple 1X12 cabs that I sometimes run my Princeton or my Deluxe though.
Man, I think these amps sound awesome through all kinds of cabs. Cheers!
I have a Princeton and am interested in doing this. I never have so I'm curious how it's done.? Are you unplugging the internal speaker and just using the extension out to the cabs? or running both?
I totally agree on 12s in a PR. I have a 65 for decades and at one point I added a 65 reissue, mainly just to have a backup and something small to take out, but keep the real deal in the studio. I always heard of people using 12s so I figured bigger must be better and i got the RI with a 12. I know the guts arent 1 to 1 either, but I was surprised how different the two amps are. In the ballpark for sure, but over the years I came to the conclusion it was mostly the speaker and its relation to the cab that accounted for what i didnt like and that I liked 10s better in the PR. Great tips.
Love it. Which year Princeton?
I have a 70s Princeton Reverb that Kevin Shaw put a WGS 12" into a few years back. About a year ago I got a mids knob put in the back. It's still pretty loud so I can't really dime it.
Justin, the tones and playing here are awesome. 🙏
The Les Paul is tuned down to C# right? (some say I'm tone deaf ;-))
Yep
Way cool Justin! I came up as a musician the same way. Quick question. Have you done a video on your pedal board? It sounds wonderful!
Yes I have. I did a long video on it. It's fairly recent. You won't have to scroll for very long. Actually, sort my videos by popular instead of recent. And thanks!!
@@JustinOstrander Thanks Justin! I found it. Keep up the great work!
I ended up at the same EQ settings of 473 naturally. Pretty cool. Maybe my ear isn't as bad as I thought. You ever try EL34s in that Princeton? I'm curious what that'd sound like.
I thought no.1 was gonna be “sell it and buy a house in Nashville”…😉Cheers!!!
Well, Justin, when you buy me a Princeton Deluxe. I’ll do it!😊😂
I really enjoy your channel. Your playing and tones are awesome. How do you get your sound without noise? I did hear a tiny bit of noise with the Princeton on this video, but your set up is virtually silent other than guitar. I have great instruments and amps, but no matter what I do I have more noise than I want. I use a noise gate but I don’t like the way it cuts off sound when it still ringing and fading out. I even get too much noise when going direct to my computer. I can angle and hold my guitars just right to stay in the quietest spot. Maybe it’s my guitar room, the electric or something. Do you have any advice on this subject or a previous video you can reference? Thanks
I’m muting almost immediately with my volume pedal. I don’t use any noise gates or noiseless pickups or anything like that.
Any way to get our hands on a full version of your song? Its pretty awesome!
I have a Fender Vibrolux Reverb, early 70's I think. Any experience with those?
Thanks for this - I came away from the Deluxe vid with the same questions.
Stupid question time… how do you ‘safely’ run this out into an extension cab?
Liked and subbed…Thanks!
unplug the internal speaker jack... plug in a speaker cable into the same load.. which is 8ohms cab with this amp... thats it..
Thanks a ton for the sub! I do exactly what @chb8037 said. I plug an 8 ohm cab into the main speaker jack. That's all!
Thanks much for the help - Looking forward to trying this out. I own a few different head/cab setups but have never used a ‘combo’ amp as a head. Cheers 👍
Great video! Was the Princeton only going through the Warehouse 12 the entire video? thank you
Yep!
Great sound with the POG. What POG is it?
POG2
Great video(s) Justin, thanks.
How would you describe the diffrances between your Princeton Reverb and Deluxe Reverb Blackface amps?
Which one do you go to for which tasks?
Thanks.
The PR is great for anything. The DR can be too loud in some situations. I prefer the DR for rock and for cleaner country playing where I need more headroom. Both mic up really well. I generally prefer the DR for recording, just because I can do so much with it. But the PR is no slouch. The PR has a totally different (and much cooler) tremolo circuit. Cheers!
Yeah these sound great on 10 if you really dial back the bass. Mine came with a Jensen PQ12. Sounds great, but now you have me wondering if the 10" speaker is the way to go. The Princeton on 10 is very loud at home unless you have a setup like he does here, but doable.
Is this a reissue? It sounds amazing! Thank you!
My Princeton Reverb is a ‘66. Thanks!
@@JustinOstrander thank you
That Princeton sounds stellar man. It must be loud in your garage. You obviously have good sound proofing in there or else you live in a remote location?
Yeah, it’s loud, but not very loud outside the garage. I do plug into the OX or the Revv D20 if I’m working after 9pm just out of courtesy for my neighbors.
Great sound! Thks for the video. What is the le paul model plse?
R5 goldtop Wildwood spec
Justin, your tone to “tape” is so great! (Btw this question is more general and came about from another video you did). Do you push the gain much on your outboard preamp on the way in or is it kept pretty pristine and we’re hearing mostly the mic’d WGS et65? In other words, is the preamp a huge component of your end result? Thanks!
I keep my pre pretty clean. But it does sound really cool overdriven. I’ll use it that way every once in a while, but it’s pretty rare.
Thanks! Appreciate the reply. Btw do you plan on making some t-shirts and hats, etc available for purchase? Be a fun way to support you. Seems they’d sell.. I’d buy a few. ✨🎸✨
If you’d like to post a pic of one of those Mojotone ceramic 10” speakers so I know which one you are a big fan of, I will keep my eyes peeled.
Great video. Which amp do you prefer, the Princeton or the Deluxe Reverb?
I really can’t decide. They’re both so great. I guess if you made me choose, I’d say I lean a little toward the DR
Run my SFPR into a solid Douglas Fir 1x12 open back cab w/ a WGS Retro 30. Treble 3, Bass 4 .
that WGS has a great bouncy low end to it. I'm a little surprised the Princeton doesn't flab out on it.
That is exactly why I keep the bass low. :)
The Mojotone eminence speaker you put in your PR:
Is it a 10 inch or 12 inch? Speaker?
Awesome playing, awesome information. Thank you so much for sharing this with us.
10”!
The Princeton running as a head sounds insanely good though a 15" cab.
I’ll have to try that sometime. I have zero experience playing guitar through a 15”. Cheers!
That is very much on my bucket list! I would love to try out the Celestion Fullback as well as the Eminence Legend in 15 inches. Whatever I play through those WILL be my neighbours' new favourite music 😅
question, what is cone cry? thanks for the video.....
Hey great video. Anyone know of a speaker swap for the 68 Princeton that would provide higher clean headroom??
