I don't want my neighbors to hate me, so I only run my cabs wide open in the garage during working hours. I would very much NOT recommend standing in front of your amp cranked all the way up without hearing protection. Cheers!
Hey Justin love all your videos seriously watch everyone beginning to end just wanted to throw this out there... while I have worked extensively with black face Deluxe reverbs and Princeton reverbs they have just never been my favorite amps. I'm just more of a Tweed guy. To that end I recently purchased - off of Reverb- Lil Dawg Little Prince lunchbox head, the 5F2A circuit, the amp is built with a 6L6 and a tube rectifier putting out a solid 15 watts so that is my only vintage style Fender amp. However I also have this Strymon iridium and let me tell you, you can definitely use the same types of settings for the round channel on the strymon. With the middle knob all the way to the left is pretty much blackface territory all the way to the right is going to get you into the Tweed sound definitely drop the bass and turn up the treble gets the same result as you are illustrating here just a heads up to all my fellow subscribers on your Channel keep up the good work
Great playing...that goes without saying you're a professional. Do you send your band or clients several takes and then let them decide which to use or do they combine all of them and use them?
I have been using this setting for many years. It’s a “trick” I seen Derek trucks using on his super reverbs. It’s a set it and forget it setting - so I placed the whole amp into the bedroom and let the sound come from the big gap under the door. BEST TONE ever… I feel it’s unmatched by a pedal. Great videos and great playing man. I’m tuning in
This video is gold! I saw Neil Young Ragged Glory tour as a teenager and it blew my mind , that sound he had out of a cranked tweed deluxe, it was the most amazing guitar sound ever, imprinted on my brain, at the time I didn’t understand what was happening! Been a metalhead for years but now as I get older I just want to have great tones and this reminds me of how to get there. Thank you
Wow… I found this video a few days ago while researching a good pedal to get some gain with my ‘64 Deluxe. Fast forward: tonight as I’m sitting playing on my sofa I realized I have a Captor X 10 feet away. I cannot wait to record a video with the DR cranked into the Captor with a TS-9 as a boost on and off. I’m glad I found your channel! Love your stuff.
Holy moly! This works incredibly well with my dream 65 pedal. You save my whole recording situation with this golden Tip. Thank you very, very much. Greetings from Germany, eddie
After watching your other video in which you are wearing the T Shirt with the settings on it, I picked up on these settings! Thought I'd give them a try and found great results riding the volume control on a strat down to between 3 and 5 cleaning up on the neck and then blistering on the bridge at 10. Only found this video when I googled where I could get the T Shirt from. Thanks for the settings, great advice
Man that Deluxe is so good! I also love the tips on not using so much grease on your rhythm tracks. They do sound better without. I’m still so envious of your job. I teach guitar and play locally for a living but always wanted to do sessions. Here in Saskatoon, there isn’t as much work as Nashville so studio work is really hard to come by. Thanks again for a great video.
Your previous video about what you can do with a deluxe was eye opening. The vol. and treble on 10 tone is spectacular! You are giving all the credit to the amp though. We all know that most of the sound is the player...
Thanks for great info! I have a '65 Deluxe (non-reverb) and '71, '74, and '76 Gibson Customs. The '76 has a maple fingerboard. I agree exactly on the difference between a Standard and Custom is the fingerboard....the maple one ('76) sounds fantastic but weighs a ton! I remember 16 lbs lol, but sustain and tone incredible....it's a backbreaker lol! I believe I let a '57 goldtop (I traded it for a '74 Marshall Superlead,. I was told the guitar was a reissue, BUT it had humbucking p/u's,and had lots of cracks with green in them! ) get away from me in 1983!!!...count YOUR blessings! Bitterness is such a kill joy...life is short. Serenity now, serenity now...There was a guitar competition here in New Orleans at Guitar Center in 2005....out of all the amplifiers on stage for competitors to plug into... I vividly remember the Deluxe Reverb reissue filling the whole store with the most incredible tube breakup. IT BLEW AWAY everything else amplifier or pedal wise when it came to overdrive! I can hardly wait now to crank up my '65 Deluxe to your settings! ...it will blow my ears off and travel right thru the 1950's thin wall house I rent lol, so I have to soundproof it. Thanks again Justin, stay cool!
What a sound! And dynamics are just the best part, to my ears at least… that’s the type of dynamics I am personally always looking for in a pedal but not sure I got anywhere close yet (don’t have the luxury of playing through a cranked amp at the moment). Thank you for the video!
I’ve come back to these settings videos often, I have a Vox MV50 clean, got it on a whim and unbelievable sale. I had been struggling with tone, very clean and bass heavy, I decided to take the settings advice given here, as the amp has a vol, treb, bass eq as well. The amp now in the sweet spot and sounds like I knew it. Could. Thanks for the ideas
Great lead tone and fanatstic video...Also will be sporting the "I got a song here" t-shirt here in Germany once it arrives...Keep up the good work ....36.2K!!!!
Stay protective of your ears! I’m 70, and have been playing since the early 1960s. I have tinnitus and some high frequency hearing loss. It completely sux. I have a really good friend who’s a great guitarist. I trust his ears to dial in my guitar sound… particularly my acoustic sound.
Thanks so much for this comment. It’s because of guys like you that I was even made aware of this issue. The problems from loud headphones show up sooo much later in life. I’m thankful I knew early on to protect my ears before it’s too late.
Hi Justin, really enjoyed this one. I use my Deluxe Reverb a fair amount. One of my favorite amps if I want just the overdrive for a solo coming from an amp, no pedals. I will try your settings. My first reaction was, Treble on 10 and Bass completely off would be so bright and harsh. After watching this video maybe I am wrong. I am going to give it a shot. I just purchased the If you know you know T-Shirt!
Justin, I love your videos and your content! I‘m a young Swiss guitarist and I‘m trying to get more session work -> your videos are very helpful and inspirational! Thanks for keeping up the good work!🎸🤘
Love this! Q regarding T’s? For us tall guys that have to worry about the fit, do you know what the T Shirt shell is? Brand, etc. See - a non guitar related question. lol
I love that goldtop. Thats probably going to be the final guitar i ever buy. Theres something about a dual p90 gibson les paul that no other guitar can quite capture. Many have come close, but sometimes, only the original is good enough.
I agree with everyone who supports protecting your ears. I had an inner ear issue in both ears. Thought my career was over. It took finding the right ENT doctor to treat me. One thing I’ve found is using close back earphones create more compression on your ears. I use open back headphones now, almost exclusively (except on vocals and acoustic guitar). It helped me immensely. (I’m using the AKG K701 - now and I love it.)
Great to hear that you found a good doctor. I am very familiar with those AKGs; they do sound great. I can not use them for most of my recording situations because they just do not isolate very well at all. Either ambient noise (like a drum kit) is so high that I have to crank my cans’ volume, or I get click bleed on acoustic (which it sounds like you deal with as well). That’s why I use the cans that I do: they isolate so well that I can keep the volume levels low enough (I’m talking like 9-10:00, what most people consider to be barely on) that they don’t compress my ears at all. I am a HUGE proponent of extreme isolation. It’s the only way to listen quietly enough to take care of your ears long term. If you’re using those AKGs for recording, I would imagine your use case is probably very different from mine. The downsides to my cans for anyone else reading this is that they have a low-mid bump (a bit of a learning curve to figure out how the control room is hearing your tone vs what you hear in your cans), and they can make your ears sweat and build up a bit of gunk on the pads over time.
@@JustinOstrander Thanks so much for responding. i totally get why my AKG’s won’t work for you in a studio playing with other musicians. In the same scenario I’d be using closed back cans as well. But at home - I find that even when recording acoustic guitars and vocals, as well as bass and guitars - I depend on these open back headphones. I literally lost my hearing of anything above 4K for over 4 months. I was close to suicidal since I couldn’t even enjoy music. My inner ear issues was finally diagnosed as eczema - which caused my ear canals to dry and crack, which allowed bacteria to enter my ear canal and do massive damage. Once it was cleared up, all I have to do is put a drop of olive oil on my finger tip and moisten the ear canal. It was a really dark time for me. I’d encourage all musicians who use cans to cut tracks to do that. Just a drop and rub on each ear canal. Most people who experience excessive ear wax issues have eczema and they don’t even know it. So just a good rule of thumb. Meanwhile, I have so loved your channel. I have friends in Nashville that you probably know, but won’t drop names in the comments. I just want you to know that, as your channel grows (and it will) you are truly reaching your audience. Me being one. Thank you, brother. 🙏
@@TexasJackdaw That's crazy. I had a friend who had impacted wax from wearing in-ears on a summer tour. He thought he was losing his hearing until the ENT doc pulled some peanut sized chunks of wax out of his ears. Your eczema diagnosis makes sense. Glad you are all good now!
Exactly, Justin. I’ve used IEMs for years and ear wax build up is a real thing. The one thing I learned from my excellent ENT doctor was that the ear builds up wax to protect it. And by simply applying a dab of olive oil at the edge of your ear hole (that sounded weird … 👀) Will greatly reduce wax buildup. In fact, since I’ve been doing that routinely (every week or so) I haven’t had any wax buildup in almost 2 years. Good to know. I am finally back to semi-normal (reaching for a beer on the drum rise during a soundcheck some 15 years ago when my drummer hit his China cymbal pretty much ruined my right ear) and am mixing records again. BTW - I’ve got a song I want to send to you for your ear on it. A demo (yes, even a country demo! Lol) I’ll dig around to see how to send it to you. I’d very much appreciate your ears on this song. I’m signed to Expressive Artists (publisher) in Hollywood, but just don’t want to send them this song. They’re not the best place to try and get country songs placed in film/TV. Ha! I really, sincerely love what you do, the values and thought you offer us on your channel. Thank you 🙏
So, yeah - after some digging, I can’t find an email to send you this file. Please advise. Would love your input and will gladly pay for your time to listen.
Nice demo Justin. I like the sounds you are getting out of the Deluxe Reverb. How much would you attribute to the tubes and what tubes are in it? I may have to try the Warehouse speaker.
Hey Justin - can you run those amp settings through an Ox Box and either (i) attenuate the cab down to a tolerable level or (ii) run the line outputs of the Ox Box into your interface? Thanks!!
I've got a 6G2 Princeton (brown panel) slightly tweaked clone, and this definitely works. crank it up, and time the tone control. it's a little more raunchy than the deluxe, and gets a little closer to the tweed Deluxe fuzzy thing. I've only really done it using a torpedo captorX into my studio monitors though, cause theres literally nowhere I can make that much noise... lol
one of the biggest things that makes it work with my clone, is the addition of a grid stopper resistor on the cathodyne phase inverter, which prevents blocking distortion, that is usually unpleasant. an original 6G2 likely wouldn't handle it as well...
Would you put the Super Reverb in the category of amps that this really does not work too well with? If what you are demonstrating is possible with an amp with a Mids pot, where would you set that pot?
I’m curious about your 69 Custom. Does it have a refret? You must to do all those bends? I have a 73 Custom and it has the original fretless wonder frets, super low. Love your channel!
Hey Justin… trying to find a deluxe reverb 60’s… talked to carter n they do not ship vintage amp.. thoughts?… leads? I’m in bend Oregon.. we can get u a big bull on public land… get started on points… plus your out of state… I will hook you up
Hey Justin, love the channel! May I ask 2 questions please? Firstly, I’m about to pull the trigger on DRRI limited edition circa 2015 - thoughts? And wondering which headphones you’re using for tracking guitars? Thx again for your time and sharing your experience
No experience with the limited edition DRRI. If it’s like the DRRIs I always had to use for back line on fly dates, you’ll probably want to swap speakers. I have an ET65 in my old deluxe reverb
I’ve gotta say I loved the 69 Custom best. But I would have loved to hear the Tele bridge pickup. Something I’ve noticed recording is that you dial this juicy tone with reverb and delay but then it gets washed out in the mix. It sounds SO freaking amazing alone but in the mix you barely notice there’s a delay on the solo. I agree, rhythm playing no delay unless you’re The Edge 😂
@@JustinOstrander I caught the bridge on the LPs but somehow I missed it on the Tele! I’ll blame it on listening to whining students all day. I have to go back and listen!
How do you think those settings would hold up running through the OX box? I don’t mind a little noise in my studio, but I also have the OX sitting around…
Hi Justin. T-shirts available in the UK❓ Incidentally, many LP Customs had solid mahogany bodies, but no maple cap… so yours may well lack the maple cap of a ‘standard’ LP Standard.
Isn’t it great that we have so many options these days to dime our amps without killing our ears or bothering the neighbors? OX box, Torpedo, attenuators, power scaling, amps with built-in modeling (Revv, Blackstar, etc). Thanks a ton for grabbing a shirt. 🤠
Les Paul standards have rosewood fingerboards the necks are made of mahogany. they do not have mahogany fretboards. They did make a short run of LP CUSTOMS in the ,80s' with Maple fingerboards. I once owned one.
Does anybody tried this in a hot rod deluxe? I did and it sounds really really good but I'm not sure how to set the presence and mid knobs. Any EQ ideas?
Justin, I have a 65 Deluxe Reverb that has been messed with and isn’t as good as others I’ve heard. Can you recommend an amp tech in Nashville to put back to original spec or with recommended mods?
Well done, as always, Justin - thank you. Piggy backing somewhat on a previous comment, do you have an opinion on attenuators, i.e. can you approximate the sound you're getting with an attenuator that doesn't cost as much as your amp (yes, I'm referring to the OxBox)? I would use this for both home (very quiet) and church (less quiet - apparently Jesus likes us to turn it up :).
I’ll be honest. I’ve never used an attenuator. I’d rather just play a quieter amp (like a Princeton or Champ). I have a couple amps with power scaling (Lazy J, for example). The OX is so good and so versatile, it’s just worth the price of admission for me. Your mileage may vary!
Great ear protection at a super low price - grab a set of Peltor muffs (95+ dB attentuation for £25 - £35) and a set of true wireless earbuds/iems (that you probably have already).
I’ve mowed the lawn like this. There isn’t a lot of room in those muffs for in-ears or even AirPods. Pretty uncomfortable after a while. I just use my studio cans when mowing now. Haha
@@JustinOstrander good point - my buds are very small but they do still get uncomfortable after a while - good enough for setting mics and amps though, and for 10 mins to cut a solo. You can get different fits of Peltors too.
Ha! Generally I agree. I just don’t think it sounds right coming out of the speaker when playing power chord rock. Im thinking Back In Black. A very subtle room verb in post can be cool though.
May I suggest that you begin a video like this by playing the thing you want us to hear, rather than explaining (clearly and concisely) it for 6+ minutes? It gives the rest of the video a context. I’m off to try this on my DRTM right now, so thanks.

Great video as usual. I've got a Princeton Reverb II and wonder if your settings will sound good on that. Gonna have to give it a run.
Yep. I do this on my Princeton reverb as well
Wow…..those settings are money on the Custom!
Would you put the Super Reverb in the category of amps that this really does not work too well with? If what you are demonstrating is possible with an amp with a Mids pot, where would you set that pot?
I have no experience with the Super Reverb. I would start with the mids knob off and adjust to taste.
Hey Bud! Thanks for the shoutout 👊.
Yessir! I still gotta get over to your place again when things slow down a bit. Hope you’re well!
I’m curious about your 69 Custom. Does it have a refret? You must to do all those bends? I have a 73 Custom and it has the original fretless wonder frets, super low. Love your channel!
It does. Small vintage-style frets
Hey Justin… trying to find a deluxe reverb 60’s… talked to carter n they do not ship vintage amp.. thoughts?… leads? I’m in bend Oregon.. we can get u a big bull on public land… get started on points… plus your out of state… I will hook you up
I've been trying to justify getting a Deluxe cause I have 8 Amps now, but you've sold me on getting one with this video. So Now what to let go of.
Great guitar sounds in this video👌🏻
Question Justin … will settings work on a 65 reissue… found one for 700
Hey Justin, love the channel! May I ask 2 questions please? Firstly, I’m about to pull the trigger on DRRI limited edition circa 2015 - thoughts? And wondering which headphones you’re using for tracking guitars? Thx again for your time and sharing your experience
lol; sorry I just saw the gk ultra phones shout out ! My bad -thank you
No experience with the limited edition DRRI. If it’s like the DRRIs I always had to use for back line on fly dates, you’ll probably want to swap speakers. I have an ET65 in my old deluxe reverb
thx for the quick response
I’ve gotta say I loved the 69 Custom best. But I would have loved to hear the Tele bridge pickup.
Something I’ve noticed recording is that you dial this juicy tone with reverb and delay but then it gets washed out in the mix. It sounds SO freaking amazing alone but in the mix you barely notice there’s a delay on the solo.
I agree, rhythm playing no delay unless you’re The Edge 😂
I switched from neck to bridge on all 3 solos.
And yes, I keep mix levels low enough that they mostly just melt into the background in the mix.
@@JustinOstrander I caught the bridge on the LPs but somehow I missed it on the Tele! I’ll blame it on listening to whining students all day. I have to go back and listen!
@@JustinOstranderAfter listening back I can’t believe I didn’t notice. 😵💫
Still liked the 69 best. And I love the term “cans” 😂
How do you think those settings would hold up running through the OX box? I don’t mind a little noise in my studio, but I also have the OX sitting around…
I'm sure that you are aware but just count the turns on the adjustment screws in case you want to put it back how it was originally!
Great sound as usual!
Hi Justin. T-shirts available in the UK❓
Incidentally, many LP Customs had solid mahogany bodies, but no maple cap… so yours may well lack the maple cap of a ‘standard’ LP Standard.
I believe so. Add one to your cart, and see if it will ship to you?
Had to buy that shirt immediately 😂 I dime my bllackfaces like this all the time, but like you said, an amp room or attenuator comes in handy 😂
I once owned one.
hey Justin, what speaker do you have in the amp that's in the room with you?
Does anybody tried this in a hot rod deluxe? I did and it sounds really really good but I'm not sure how to set the presence and mid knobs. Any EQ ideas?
Thanks for the settings. Now I know. ;-) I’ll have to give it a try.
Sounds amazing. How is it with a strat?
It’s great. The lower output the pickups get, though, the less singing sustaining overdrive
@@JustinOstrander Thanks Justin.Love your demos.
Is that ‘69 Custom refretted?
Or is it an original “Fretless Wonder” with the teeny-tiny frets?
Yep, refret. They’re medium height narrow frets. Buk had it done before I bought the guitar from him.
I survived drag races, construction sites and Marshalls, but a crash cymbal did permanent damage. I use AKG 240’s all the time in the studio.
Justin, did you go into the same input with all three guitars? Curious is you use input two with the Les Pauls...
Yep same input
@@JustinOstrander just tried it with my old Princeton through the Ox - sounds great! Thanks for the tip!
Justin, I have a 65 Deluxe Reverb that has been messed with and isn’t as good as others I’ve heard. Can you recommend an amp tech in Nashville to put back to original spec or with recommended mods?
Nashville Amp Repair
Justin, do you use a 'Brown Box' on your old amps? I recently bought one to use with mine, but just wondering about you.
I use something similar-the Tone Preserver. Drops the voltage to extend tube life
Justin, what year is that Deluxe? All stock? Sounds insane!
Late ‘65. And yes, except I’m running it to an ext cab with an ET65 in it. Thanks!
nice. well done!
I want a “you know, if you know” shirt.
I may just have to save my pennies, suck it up and get the Ox. Or ask Santa. Thank you! @@JustinOstrander
God Bless Gloria from Fender..!❤️🙏🏻🎸
What is your reverb setting on your amp, it sounds great!
It’s just on 3-4
I'm curious what gauge strings you use. I see all kinds of opinions on this...
The Tele and the Custom have 10s. Goldtop has 11s.
A great sound indeed! ❤
Very cool.
I'm excited to get home and try that setting on my Custom Shop burgundy '65 reissue Princeton with a 12"...
Love this,
Justin love your tips. I’m gonna be giving you a call. In two week for something that’s coming up see if you wanna do it. Anyway we’ll talk soon. Z
Is the tele nicknamed "biscuit" because it looks like one? Or some other reason? Sounds amazing!
My dear friend Steve Hinson picked it up on a session and exclaimed, “why that’s lighter than one of Martha White’s biscuits!”
Merch! Merch! Merch! Merch! Merch!
Under your comment, it says “translate to English”. Apparently, you just said “Girl!” 5x in a row 😂
hahahaha. That's hilarious. @@JustinOstrander
Garcia settings.
Oh PLEEEZE don't turn the reverb off. The world is a better place BECAUSE OF reverb!! 😃
That’s why I always put chapters in my videos. I think most people skip ahead if they want. You can skip straight to solo #1 at 6:24.
The new lazy " musician " they want the result right now instead of searching a discover , practice and learning.
👍
Wouldn't be uncle larry backing out...
Nope.
Fender amps sound best with treble on 10 And bass on 0.
Bass no more than 3 for sure!
I like you and your knowledge, but man, this pop country all sounds so cookie cutter. It’s like nothings changed in 20 years.
To be fair, I have a LOT of stuff muted in this track. It is bare bones aside from basic rhythm stuff. The point is to showcase the amp settings
So you think you can mix a good sound with ear muffs on hahaha to funny
Ha! These are extreme isolation headphones. Check out gk-music.com.
