  • Don't miss May in Rosanne's garden! Blooms are everywhere and the air is filled with fragrance. From the showy Crabapple blossoms to the striking tall hybrid tulips, the garden is absolutely bold with color and form. But, hidden in the woodland garden, there are dainty little ephemeral treasures, such as Trillium and Hepatica, which also demand attention. Be sure to catch the May garden highlights.

      I couldn't agree more! I would love to have lights all over our garden. It would be magical! We've discussed it often over the years and even had a plan once. But, because we do have some mighty large biting mosquitos that come out after dark, we tend to go indoors when that happens 😕. At any rate, the garden would be absolutely lovely with fairy lights. Thank you for your comment.

    Hi Rosanne! I always get so excited over your videos. Your garden is the stuff dreams are made of! I love the woodlands garden. Trilliums are so pretty and there is alway jack in the pulpit nearby. I have a bleeding heart at the front of my house that I love. Last year it looked really pathetic so I dug it up, picked out all the weeds and grassy stuff that didn’t belong, dropped some compost in the whole, divided it up and replanted it. It looks spectacular. I couldn’t believe the difference in that plant! It’s crazy! This is the year of the flower for me, so wish me luck…lol. Have a fabulous spring.

Last fall I watched your tulip planting video and thanks to your instruction I am enjoying a nice show of yellow tulips right now. I am very excited to put the cold behind us in MN and see some things grow! My recent plant splurges included the fern leaf peony I learned about from you. Your woodland garden is lovely. Wonderful tulip display; I applaud your thought process and method. The purple and dark red doubles really caught my eye, though "Queen of the Night" purples are a long-time favorite. Crab apples love your garden! So pretty! Interesting to see what is blooming in other zones. I'm in San Diego, so our wisteria is long over. Clematis and roses are going strong, and ready for their second bloom. We will have a dry year, so it's time to mulch everything. Golden Silk Oaks have just finished, and the purple jacaranda trees are popping out everywhere. In late February you can smell orange and other citrus trees blooming in most neighborhoods. :)

    • @RosannesGarden
      @RosannesGarden  2 года назад

      From your description I can almost smell the gardens in San Diego! How lovely! But, it gives me something to look forward to here. My wisteria is just leafing out now as are the climbing roses. The clematis will probably start flowering in a week or so. It has been dry here too (for spring) and as you say, mulch is the answer. I hope you have a wonderful growing season. Ps, I'm going to look up purple jacaranda trees next! 😃 (new to a zone 4 gardener)

    Hello Rosanne enjoyed the video. The tulips are spectacular. Do you have problems with rabbits eating the tulip stems and flowers? I started 3 tulip pots this year and they were beautiful. I am thinking of planting tulips in the ground come fall after seeing your video. My planting zone 5b IL. Thanks

    • @ginafriend1690
      @ginafriend1690 2 года назад

      Hi Roseann Boi .. I'm also here in IL 5b. Rabbits will eat tulip leaves, leaving a look that you cut them straight off. Voles eat bulbs. Best to put a wire cloche or such to protect them from the rabbits.

    • @RosannesGarden
      @RosannesGarden  2 года назад

      Hi fellow Roseann! I agree with Gina. The best protection against rabbits is some sort of barrier. I had two varieties this year that the rabbits just loved. I put a hoop of green chicken wire around them until they were further along, and then removed it once the tulips were larger and flowering. You can see it if you look closely at the scene at 6:55 you can see such fencing on the right. I highly encourage you to try tulips in the ground! 🌷

    Gorgeous tulip bed Roseanne! The hostas interwoven amongst them looks perfect. Do you prune your crabapples(particularly the Lancelot) to shape or let them free form?

    • @RosannesGarden
      @RosannesGarden  2 года назад +1

      We prune all of our trees to keep their shape, but Lancelot has received very little - we trim out crossed branches and try to keep it from getting too crowded in the middle of the crown. But, it really creates it's own lollipop shape. Louisa, a weeping form by nature, just needs pruning to keep her "cowlicks" and suckers from gaining ground. We always try to prune in the first week of March or so.

    • @RosannesGarden
      @RosannesGarden  2 года назад

      Hi, Thank you! Pulling the tulips would be way too much work (for us) and risk the surrounding plants. So, every two or three years, we just plant new tulips, as though there are none in the ground. Once in a while we hit old bulbs, but most of the time we don't . The following spring we get a few strays intermingling with the new bulbs, but it adds to the informality. Hope that helps!
