    Trees are such wonderful friends in the garden. Yours are all so beautiful, as is your yard. I love the stone you have bordered your beds with and built the walls. They make your entire garden look so cared for and neat. Will you speak about them in a video, please?

    Hello Rosanne, first of all, thank you very much for setting up the automatic translation, my language is Spanish. I congratulate you on your beautiful garden and for the very precise explanation that you share with us in your videos, I have just moved to a house with a very large lot, but it does not really have a garden shape and what little it has is very neglected. Thank you so much, this has helped me put my garden design idea down on paper. You've used the perfect trees throughout your space. I was slightly afraid of bring in to many trees but you've displayed your so well that now I know that it is defiantly doable.

      Wonderful! Trees are the greatest and I'm glad that you are considering trees in your landscape. They are actually subtle, but have an enormous impact on the feeling of being "enclosed or enveloped" in the garden . Truly great, even for a city garden.

  • @Edu_Kate

    I love the layers of trees in your garden.
    When I moved here, nearly 30 years ago, I was swayed by the many trees in my yard (I am in Crystal). Over the years I've had to remove 11 of them. I have a 'Prairie Fire' crabapple I didn't notice in time got blight so will be removing it. My last mature tree in the back, some kind of maple, is roaring with orange that reflects into my kitchen setting it ablaze this morning. Oddly, this is the first time it colored so orange. It's always been quite golden. It's near the power lines and has two leaders so, sadly, isn't long for this world. After a "tornado" went thru here this summer several huge trees had to go and it got me speculating on the life of mine.
    Since you like weeping trees, I have to point you to my favorite one I planted this spring in a mixed hydrangea hedge I hope screens the neighbors in time. 'The Blues' weeping Colorado spruce. Oh my. It should remain fairly small. It layers so nicely with the hydrangeas, grasses, 'Black Lace' elderberry, coralberry and blue/purple perennials planted around it.

    • @RosannesGarden
      @RosannesGarden  3 года назад +1

      Greetings neighbor! I lived in Crystal once. 😊
      The constant evolution of a garden is to be expected, but losing trees hurts extra hard, because of the long time it takes to replace. On the other hand, it also provides new opportunities.
      Thanks for the tip on "The Blues" weeping Colorado spruce. Your vignette sounds lovely, especially with the blue of the spruce and the deep burgundy of the elderberry. All the best in gardening!

    I am a big fan of Catalpa! I have to admit, I have not known about them for very long… We purchased our home coming up on three years in early May. When we first looked at it, I couldn’t tell what most of the trees were without their leaves. But I noticed a tree that had some large pods hanging from it. When June rolled around, I was blown away by the huge blooms, and that is when I figured out that it was a Catalpa! I had never seen one before, but now I notice them when I see them growing in other places. It’s my favorite tree in my yard! I love your variety of trees. Your garden is very beautiful all around! This video makes me want to look into some smaller trees I can add to my yard. Last summer I donated to the Arbor Day Foundation and got some tiny trees in the beginning of December. I had to give some to a friend because they would not all fit in our yard once they matured. I did plant two Redbud trees and a White Magnolia in my front yard and two Pee Gee Hydrangeas and a small flowering crab on the sides. Unfortunately, I think the rabbits may have eaten the flower and crab. The Hydrangeas I caught and covered them with paper towel rolls when I noticed that something had been eating on them. We have an odd shaped yard, it’s pie shaped which makes the front yard very wide, but the back yard is tiny and comes to a point at a power pole. I’m very interested in that tiny blue Blue Spruce, I didn’t know there were dwarf forms of those, and have always loved that color! Right now I only have one evergreen tree which is an Arborvitae next to the side door of the house. I’ve been thinking I really need to find some small varieties to add some evergreen interest. And also to add some hiding places for the birds in the back yard. I noticed the birds love the Arborvitae, and would love to give them some safe spaces in back closer to my bird feeders. 😊

    • @RosannesGarden
      @RosannesGarden  2 года назад +1

      Wow, sounds lovely with all those trees. Ahh, those rabbits. We do wrap or otherwise protect the trunks of younger trees. This winter we had severe 🐇damage on an older one that we didn't protect. I've always wanted a Redbud, but never quite had an opportunity with the right space. There are so many good things about trees, but I think that my favorite would be the birds and birdsong they attract. All the best with your garden! 🌲❤️🌳

      @@RosannesGarden I do love the birds! They are partly why I wish to add some evergreens, even if is small ones to fit among my other large established trees. I want them to have places to hide for safely. 😊

    I also have lots of trees in my middle -size garden. I do worry about their size in future although I love to have trees alot. Your video helps me relax abit after knowing how old your trees are. I guess I may need to prune them though.

    • @RosannesGarden
      @RosannesGarden  Год назад

      Oh good! Trees are indeed special, but do grow 😐. Pruning is important to help keep them in shape, such as with Louisa, the weeping crab apple tree pictured in the thumbnail. If your soil is healthy, I'd stay away from too much fertilizer though, as it will make them grow.

    Enjoyed the tour! We lost two very large trees on our property last summer so we have some big areas to fill. I also am in zone 4 so I find your information very helpful. It can be overwhelming trying to figure out what to get when your at the nursery and also very expensive! It was so nice to see how they looked as more mature trees and at different seasons of the year. Your property is beautiful. I thought I noticed some drip line in one of your videos, do use drip lines in your garden beds? Thanks for sharing with us!

    • @RosannesGarden
      @RosannesGarden  4 года назад

      Thank you! I am glad you found it useful. Losing large trees is certainly very unfortunate, and changes the landscape for many years. I am sorry for your loss. But, lemons into lemonade! All the best finding some nice replacements.
      As to the drip line, I do have soaker hoses in many of our beds. It is part of a larger irrigation system.

    Hi Roseanne, I love your channel! I am so fascinated-- thank you! I was wondering how you prune or stake your dwarf hemlock. I love the look of yours but in all the photos I've seen of the same variety, it appears mounded and not very tree-like, as yours is. Thank you again for the inspiration. :)

    • @RosannesGarden
      @RosannesGarden  Год назад

      Thank you! I’m so glad you are enjoying my channel!🌲 as to the weeping hemlock, I may have been fortunate in my original plant selection, because I have not needed to stake it, and I have rarely pruned it. To get more of the tree shape rather than all mounded, you could prune off some of the lower branches. I have done that with hydrangea also, to give it more of a tree form. My best suggestion would be to go to a nursery you trust and look at the specimens to get one that suits you. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help on this! Good luck!

    I love the weeping pines framing your bench. I’d love to see a video about those and how you trained it. Looks like they’re planted fairly close to your property line, how wide do they get? I have a small yard and always worry about planting too closely to the property beside us.

    • @RosannesGarden
      @RosannesGarden  3 года назад +2

      Hi Heather, The weeping white pines around the bench really didn't need much training. We braced them with rebar for a few years. They are planted 20 inches from the property line. I'd say they do impose on our neighbors by about a foot. We do prune them back on our neighbor's side. As a note, however, we lost one of them late last summer. Broke my heart and really don't know what happened. Our arborist didn't have the time to come and take a look before the tree was almost dead 😖. We now have a new tree care company ❤️🌳.

    I have silver maple trees that are growing in my mulch on the side of my house right against the outside wall of the house they grew from the acorns that fell from the other trees in the yard the trees are not quite 1 year old. What would be the best time of the year to dig them up and plant them somewhere else in the yard away from the outside wall of the house . Im located in North Georgia

    • @carmenbailey8209
      @carmenbailey8209 4 года назад +1

      Michael Anger wow, if you have a silver maple growing near your foundation, I’d be digging that up right now. We have one in our yard, because my husband wanted instant shade, it’s now a good 100ft. There root system grows close to ground surface and can damage your foundation.
      We live a Ontario, and the tree is okay, but I wish we had planted something different. Silver Maples has keys, lots of keys not acorns

    • @michaelanger1392

      Carmen Bailey yes they do have keys I don't know what got me to write acorns but right now they are about 6 feet tall and the leaves didnt fall off of them yet . Should i wait until the leaves fall off of the trees before i dig them up and plant them away from the house?

    • @carmenbailey8209
      @carmenbailey8209 4 года назад +1

      Michael Anger I’m not a expert just another home owner, but If it was in my yard I would cut in down and dig the roots out in the spring.
      But please ask a professional their opinion, I live in Ontario and Sliver Maples are a soft wood that grows fast and provides shade, that’s what my husband wanted. Today our choice of a tree would definitely be different. The best of luck in your decision.

    • @RosannesGarden
      @RosannesGarden  3 года назад +1

      Hi there, Generally, crab apple trees need full sun (at least six hours of direct sunlight) to do well. I don't think that only morning sun would be enough for most varieties that I know.
