  • His career as a landscaper might surprise you. But the tour of his yard will absolutely take your breath away! It's been 4 years since we last had a glimpse of his landscape. So much has changed since then.
Located in Western PA, he lives in temperate growing zone 5. His property gets direct sun, filtered sun, and shade. My Dad has built perennial landscape beds that include natives, edibles and many weeping trees. He perfectly balances the use of deciduous trees that provide a showy display in the Fall. But his use of evergreens, maintains privacy and structure during the frigid Winter months.
His yard demonstrates many luxuriant plant arrangements that a person can use to beautify their home and garden. And his raised bed gardens continue to expand with each new growing season.
As a professional landscaper, my Father has a lifetime of experience and he's done much more than what we've shown here. Check out his site to see even more photos!

Hi Al! You’re truly an inspiration. I’ve recently retired early and now I’m looking for my next career. I’ve always enjoyed gardening and thought maybe I’d become a professional landscaper. Do you have any suggestions or books to read for someone interested in your line of work? Thanks to you and your Son for the video!

This is so relaxing! The scenery as well as your dad’s gentle relaxing & comforting spirit & voice. Very soothing like having a bed time story read to you. He’s very talented, knowledgeable, hardworking & passionate about what he does. Not only does he get to enjoy it, but he’s also provided a wonderful habitat for so many pollinators & other animals. I absolutely love that nothing goes to waste either! 🥰

I was searching for the tour of your dad's garden he did 4 years ago, (I rewatch it yearly for inspiration!), and I found this one! I love how he pulled out those snippers and cut a flower for your mom. The romance still going strong. I love it!
Edit: ok, I just finished the entire video (I commented when I was only halfway through) and I just had to come back and say WOW!!! I loved so many things about this video. I love the admiration and respect you have for your dad, I love the way you included photos of things in different seasons, the footage of the flooding was incredible and provided such a valuable lesson in resilience and hope, I love how he carried that peony all over the yard for your mom, and of course the garden itself-the layout and design and plant variety. Your dad is an amazing, inspiring man. I so enjoyed this and will be back to rewatch again and again. This was a pure joy. I'm a mom of 4 and I've been stuck at home in quarantine, laid off from my job as a dental hygienist. This has really inspired me to make the most of this time in my yard and try to beautify it as much as possible so we can "live outdoors" as your dad says. Thank you again! 💚

In an age where so many in their 20's and 30's are turning their backs on everything their parents value and do - it is a sweet joy to see you honor your father's work and his contributions to your life, and to hear you encourage others to look for the same from their own parents! May your kids treat you the same in their adulthood as you do yours.

I just watched this video, and I miss my Dad so much.
Everything he touched just came to abundant life and sang it's song for him.
Hard working, from dawn till dusk, hands and heart in the earth, so much a part of it, he walked nature's secret, silent pathways of understanding, humble.
I visited him, about a year before he passed away. I walked out onto his balcony, saw all the plants he had, either dead or dying, and my heart just shattered. I knew, and he knew.
So, to whomever reads this : You don't get your parents as perfect, infallible ideals. I certainly didn't.
But they taught me so very much in the short time I had with them, so love them and learn what you can, they are invaluable sources of wisdom.
Thanks so much for sharing this wonderful video, I can see the rapport, communication, and the respect between you both. Please give Dad a hug.

What an amazing yard! So beautiful and I got so many ideas! My mother was a nurse. When I was about 12 years old, she said to me, "You ought to be a nurse." I said, "I can't be a nurse! I can't stand the sight of blood!" She said, "You'll get used to it." So funny! I became a maternity nurse. I never did get used to the sight of blood WHEN YOU'RE CUT. But I was OK with the kind of blood you see at a birth. I just retired after 43 years of delivering babies and taking care of mom's and babies. I loved every minute of it and I've thanked my Mom a million times for encouraging me in that direction. I did the same for my daughter who is now an ICU nurse. Because of Covid, she may not love every second of it, but she loves most of them!

Beautiful garden, the combination of maples, weeping conifers and hostas is gorgeous.

We had a palm tree in the front right of our house growing up . The electric company told my parents it needed to be trimmed because of the tall wires that were above it ..but, in doing so all the palm branches would HAVE to come down it would have been a real eye sorer had my dad cut it to their instructions. Soooo what he did was cut the tree all the way down to 2 feet. With the remaining parts of the tree he measured 3 ft another 3 1/2 the next 4, mind you this was a very robust and tall tree. He then hollowed out these sections did his lil magic with sealants, stains, and tarnishes and it became a waterfall over a blue pond that was carved into a whale shape he then built a quaint. Black bridge that you could look straight down and see the fish ..lots of orange, black, blue and green it was beautiful and watching your dads simplicity it just blends right in with nature..hey it may be they are related 👬j

I got a kick out of the comment on the dinosaur plant ", it's invasive" I would say so it has taken over a big section of the space where it is planted. It’s been trial and error. We have had to hire someone to do really heavy work we couldn’t but I love planting & learning about flowers. I’m trying to figure out a non chemical way to get rid of pests now. My dad’s passion was cars. He spent most of his life working on them. Mechanical and body work. I probably know more about cars than any other girl I know, lol 😂

Beautiful garden. The key to an amazing garden is water. Get a good irrigation system, control weeds, water, wait.

    • @PSPSMITH2022
      @PSPSMITH2022 5 лет назад +1

Also key is carefully selecting plants with water requirements and weather preferences that closely match the area. For example, it can take a tremendous amount of water trying to keep certain tropical plants alive in a high desert, while other plants better suited for the environment are quite happy to thrive without much additional watering. My food gardens typically require additional water anyway, since the raised beds and planters filled with fruits and vegetables generally require more water than the surrounding landscape in order to maximize production. By catching and collecting rainwater, we easily collect enough to water the landscape areas and meet roughly 50% of the water needs for the food gardens on an average year. On rainy years, like this year, we won't need any municipal water for the garden at all!

You have an amazing father, I am so impressed with him. I've learned my love of gardening too from my dad. Happy Father's Day and thank you to all the fathers who have given us the gift of loving nature.

Thank you for this wonderful video and tribute to your dad. His gardens are truly amazing! Everything thriving shows his thoughtfulness and respect for nature. My granddad was my influencer. Some of my earliest memories are of working in his gardens. He had the most beautiful flowers and edibles! I couldn’t wait to get home from school so I could meet him outside and “go to work”. 😂 I’m still growing some of his amaryllis and he’s been gone over 30 years. Your dad reminds me a lot of him. Quiet, thoughtful, and at peace with the work he has done. May he long enjoy it! 🌸🙌

I have a passion for gardening. Been going on trial and error (sadly, beautiful plants suffered in the process.) I’m really interested in how to create the smooth borders. I would love to eventually have a yard half as beautiful as his. Your dad seems like such a pure human. I don’t mind hard work, but I feel like if I had a plan it’d be much more lucrative

Second time watching. Still inspires me on those times when I feel ours too much to care for. PA zone 6....drought the entire summer so we’ll see what comes back in spring. Battled deer all season and getting ready to fence off all the arborvitae before winter when the deer would attack those. Our season is just too short! Love your point of no straight lines!

Thanks for sharing, really enjoyed the beautiful property and fantastic tree and shrubs, some salvaged from jobs. My Dutch Dad passed on his serious passion for horticulture. He passed when I was 22 and he never saw me working in interior tropical landscaping of lobbies of big skyscrapers in Toronto and also two summers exterior Landscaping design when in University. I believe I will be successful in passing the green thumb onto my three kids. Lucky man to combine his passion with his work. Very physically tough field. Well done video and audio. Speaks volumes you did this for your Dad. You should be proud of him.

Very beautiful yard and a nicely done garden tour by both of you. Interesting to see that he is not immune to the ravages of nature that we all experience. I like the comment about the chipmunks because they are a real nuisance in our yard. I was curious as to whether he also had issues with deer. They seem to eat all of our hostas and a lot of our other annual plants and really limits what we’re able to put in the ground. I wish you guys were in Connecticut so you could landscape my yard!

Thanks for watching! It's odd, but Dad's pest pressure seems to come from the smaller animals and not the deer. Although I can sympathize. Deer can be so destructive! :O
