"Chiquitita" means 'little girl' (with affection) in spanish And the melody have a spanish tune, specialy by the acustic guitar But the center is the wonderful piano, like akmost all ABBA songs
"Chiquitita" is a beautiful song, it has hopeful lyrics, a melody that starts very soft with the blonde Agnetha's solo, then grows and explodes in a powerful chorus; Agnetha and Anni Frida's vocal harmonies are of excellence (Agnetha is soprano, Anni Frid is mezzo soprano, and together blending together the 'Third Voice' of ABBA)
"Chiquitita" was composed especially for the Concert by UNICEF, invited (with a lot of artist) by Bee Gees
ABBA premiered "Chiquitita" that night in January 9 (1979), and its royalties are eternal for UNICEF
"Chiquitita" was ABBA's greatest success in Latin America, that prompted ABBA to record it in Spanish, and its success was so extraordinary that in the following years ABBA recorded an album with its best songs entirely in Spanish
"Chiquitita" was specialy the greatest hit of ABBA in my country Argentina
"Chiquitita" is in the Top 3 of all ABBA worldwide biggest hits, with 'Dancing Queen" and "Fernando", and it's a fantastic Masterpiece
This promotional video was in February 1979 in Swizterland, when ABBA go there to a special TV "ABBA in Switzerland", for the 'International year of the Child'
    (That's why the snowman)
It's their only promotional video that ABBA made without Sweden
I wish to see you soon in another reactions to ABBA songs
    Maybe the next could be
"Thank you for the music" (1977)
another beautiful ABBA song recorded in spanish
GOD bless you and stay safe
    My best regards from

a separate comment, to provide you with some contextual information that you wouldn't even imagine about this historic ABBA song.
    1) ABBA had been invited to the Concert for UNICEF They were the only one of all the invited artists who was non-English speaking)
ABBA were promoting their disco-style song "If It Wasn't for the Nights" as a future new single.
But the time came for the recording of "Chiquitita", and everything changed, and ABBA considered "Chiquitita" as more appropriate for UNICEF, and so it was.
And the premiere at that historic concert at the United Nations
    2) at the time of recording "Chiquitita" it is the time of separation of Agnetha and Björn as a couple, with two small children of 6 and 1 year old
"Chiquitita" is their last recording as a couple, and at the same time it is the first that they perform separately, and this is the first official video of ABBA no longer being two couples.
You can see the professionalism of Agnetha and Björn, who are next to each other, and just separated
    3) the success of "Chiquitita" was more notable in Spanish-speaking countries; In my country Argentina, many singles were sold, and it was on this occasion that the manager of the RCA record company in Argentina traveled to Sweden with an adaptation of the lyrics in Spanish (only the first verses and chorus) and convinced ABBA's manager to record it in spanish
ABBA accepted and premiered it in Spain in 1979 in a couple of TV specials.
Its success was indescribable And that same year ABBA recorded another one in Spanish, and with an official video:
"Estoy soñando" (I have a dream)
The following year ABBA will record a full album in Spanish, with many of their hits (Mamma Mia, Fernando, Dancing Queen, Thank you for the músic)
For this, the lyrics in Spanish were made by the argentine Buddy and Mary McClusky, and a Spanish journalist helped Agnetha and Frida with the phonetics for the recordings.
That's why, when you cited my country Argentina among the most successful places of "Chiquitita", my Argentine pride told me to tell you everything important that connects Argentina with ABBA through "Chiquitita", here is their greatest success, the same as Mexico and other Latin American countries
and Argentina provided ABBA with the Spanish lyrics for most of its recordings.
Finally I want to congratulate you for your passion, professionalism and joy with each new ABBA song that you discover.
ABBA really has a level of excellence, although in their time they were overrated and considered very commercial, but reproducing their melodies and the complex alchemy of their vocal harmonies is impossible to even approach such a level.
More very popular songs await you, and others that were not singles but are as brilliant as the previous.
    A cordial greeting from
    Buenos Aires Argentina South America

Carries me back to my young adulthood - I used to hang out in a hole-in-the-wall, low-ceilinged, WWII British pub (in the southern US) that had an old upright piano next to the stone fireplace.
On Friday nights, the owner’s wife would come in and play, which evolved over time into a weekly sing-along that developed its own regular crowd that would come in just to have fun and participate.
Someone brought a battered tambourine in specifically for Chiquitita, and it became THE song to sing when she played.
Lots of great times and memories - it broke my heart when Arthur retired and sold the business to a couple of hipster entrepreneurs, who destroyed the vibe to turn a quick buck. Assholes, the both of them.

This is the song that made me fall in love with ABBA as a child. So good, unbeatable harmonies. You've spoken about hearing them live in one of the past videos, their performance of Chiquitita at Wembley in 79 is amazing imo. There's also Dancing Queen from Australia in 77. There's also S.O.S, Take a Chance on Me, Knowing Me Knowing You, Gimme Gimme Gimme, Fernando and so many others you gotta get to lol. The GOATS of music. They were in Switzerland at this time and needed to record a video for the song so they just sat down on a mountain and did this, so there's no real meaning to the snowman. The only ABBA single to not have a "proper" music video I think.

I believe this if from when they were in Switzerland, filming ABBA in Switzerland in 1979. Who thought it was a fun idea with a giant snowman in the background I have no idea... You can see the wind blowing Fridas hair... giving her some trouble. The title means little girl in spanish, and you can hear some influences probably. Maybe the snowman felt child friendly for the cause?

It has been incorrectly stated by some fans that this was a studio. ABBA were in the Swiss Ski Resort of Leysin to film a TV Special in February 1979. They chose this visit to also shoot this video. Although it turned out great, it always seemed a odd film location for a Spanish/Mexican flavoured song. In the chorus they sing ''But the sun is still in the sky and shining above you' while the video is filmed in the evening, halfway up a snowy mountain.

You should listen to the Spanish version of Chiquitita, whether you understand Spanish or not. Yes, it has the same melody, same voices, and similar lyrics. Just another darn good ABBA song for English-speaking ears. BUT, it developed into its own and hit a chord in all of Latin America for its harder-hitting lyrics and profound nuanced meaning in Spanish.

So many great ABBA songs. If you want prog try Eagle from The Album (full length version), if you want darkly mysterious try The day before you came. If you want disco try Summer night city, etc, etc.

Frida was so perfect at holding her own and balancing Agnetha's strong voice.

Frida’s voice was stronger than Agnetha’s, so not sure what you mean? During live performances Frida held the microphone further away to try to counter balance things otherwise her voice was more prominent

I have just recently discovered your reactions and have been so pleased that you have done a lot of my top tier musicians. I was in high school in the 1970's and LOVE most all 70's music. ABBA is for sure one of my tops. ABBA are the first initials of each member. They guys had been writing and performing themselves but when they brought their wives in to sing leads, well the magic happened. I remember listening to my radio in my car when it was announce that the group was disbanding due to both couples getting divorced. I was crushed. Fun fact: They won the competition with WATERLOO, second place was Olivia Newton John. You have done great ones so far but let me tell you a few of my top favs. Definately check out DOES YOUR MOTHER KNOW, this is the only song that has a male lead singer, Bjorn sings it with the ladies as back up. KNOWING ME, KNOWING YOU was my divorce song. I love ANGEL EYES. DANCING QUEEN was one of their early super hits. FERNANDO has a real dreamy quality to it. Another early hit was S.O.S. Please continue down their rabbit hole and enjoy the ride

VERY european. A LOT of erudite elements are applied. That's why it sounds so epic.
Those 4 fabulous musicians know how to do it. And they do.

ABBA were in Switzerland filming for a special due to be released at eastertime. The BBC was also there filming them for a Christmas show, thus the snow scene. But because of the lighting and wind issues, a second version was filmed indoors and that was the one used by the BBC for the Christmas show instead. ruclips.net/video/G5rSsH-snRs/видео.html

Since we're at ABBA right now (and if I've researched correctly you haven't heard this song on your channel yet) I would like to suggest a song by ABBA for New Year's Eve: "Happy New Year". The song is "very ABBA". Behind a beautiful and catchy melody that alternates between contemplation and party mood hide lyrics with great depth. It's one of my favorite ABBA songs.

The Snowman may have something to do with the fact it was recorded in Sweden on December 13th 1978, it might of been released in some countries just before Christmas, just a guess

DId you all know that ABBA in 1979 decided to. Everytime someone plays this song. UNICEF, receive donation money. Forever , everyday , and always , always. So spread the words . So Manny people can get the need they deserve. Thank you ABBA for that ❤️🙏🏻🌟

Benny Anderson is not a songwriter; he’s a classical composer who found himself in the 20th century, forced to write pop songs.
And Bjorn? His mastery of the English language and lyrics is supernatural.
For those who never heard it, check out their musicals “Chess” and “Kristina”. You’ll see what I mean.

Two of their lesser known songs that I always really liked were The Piper and Our Last Summer. The Piper had such a nice folksy feel to it and the song Our Last Summer has the lyrics of anyone remembering another really beautiful time in their life.
