Love the way Blondie looked straight at the camera, almost felt like she could see you. Every boy in the 70's and 80's had a crush on her! Every song they did sounded so different.
I think I was eight years old when this came out, I lost my innocence right…… there! Have not been the same since.
guilty!!!!
Blondie is the name of the band, not the singer.
I still get those boyhood feelings in my chest when I hear it
fact
I’m so glad you reacted to the humor in the lyrics. People often overlook that aspect of Blondie.
When this song came out it definitely was a mega hit. Men loved her and the women wanted to be like her. No one was like her and since then no one’s come close.
It's almost unfair how many great songs were made in 1979
It can’t be overstated how huge of a hit this was when it came out. Blondie is awesome!
They were really the band that ushered in the new music to the masses ! I can’t imagine a more pivotal performer than Debbie Harry in my last 45 years . They changed everything ❤️ The material before this was amazing as well . They were building up to this since 74/75
One of the sexiest, talented female singers in the industry! Good times every time you hear it! Thanks for memories!
Big Blondie fan here, and there are a couple of historical facts about them that are significant: 1) Blondie was one of 4 bands that helped kick off the original American punk scene in NY at CBGBs (the other 3 were The Talking Heads, The Ramones and Television, the British punk scene was concurrent but separate). 2) Many of their hardcore punk fans considered this song to be the ultimate sellout, having little to do with their roots, while for mainstream listeners this was their introduction to the band 3) Regardless of what the often-incorrect Wikipedia says, disco was still in swing in 1979, though it was fading, and didn't exist at all in the 60s, having started up around 1972/73 4) In their defense, Blondie was quite musically adventurous, and a few years after this song had one of the first ever rap hits, with the song Rapture. I've always admired Debby Harry for putting her career aside to care for Chris Stein. She doesn't just have a heart of glass; it's pure gold.
I remember that time so well, I was an early Ramones and Blondie fan. but I liked this song a lot.
I remember reading that, before it had an actual name, they referred to this song as “That Damn Disco Song” 😂 I still have my original vinyl of Parallel Lines bought when the album was still new. Yes, I’m old 😂
Disco was still riding high as the classic Night Fever soundtrack with many hits from The Bee Gees and others came out in 1978. This song is definitely disco but not usual for Blondie which as you read dabbled in many different genres of music. Deborah Harry didn't usually sing this high. Give a try to their other number 1 hits... Call Me is more rock/pop, The Tide Is High is reggae and Rapture has some of earliest rapping. One Way Or Another is a fave and is rock/punk.
@@Scary__fun I had it in my head that SNF was released in 1977, so looked it up and...we're both right, really. It was released December 16, 1977, just in time for the Christmas market, and of course continued to have an impact well into and beyond 1978. Glad you mentioned One Way or Another, also a fave of mine and a great suggestion for Salvo's next review!
@@toni-annmyers3604 Parallel Lines is such a great album! I lost my original vinyl version some years back, but every note and beat is etched in my brain. Got to briefly meet drummer Clem Burke at Painted Sound in LA years ago, and had the opportunity to tell him as much face-to-face. Great guy. Blondie rules.
My dad owned a bar back in the 80's that was country based bar but he made sure this song was on the jukebox. Everyone loved this song.
You can’t go wrong with any Blondie song. They are all similar but different but all driven by that gorgeous quirky voice of the beautiful Debbie Harry
One of my favorite songs. It plays in any decade.
I love Blondie, and Debbie Harry is so iconic - beautiful, talented, stylish, but having had the pleasure of meeting her and having a chat, also a kind and down to Earth person. Love her!
70's & 80's rock legend!
Million percent Richard 👍👌
Heart of Glass was definitely a Studio 54 classic
Same here, and ive heard it hundreds of times!
Everyone falls in love with Blondie. Go with it.
The Wikipedia page just sort of skips past it but when it says she took a couple of years off cos of...
Blondie had finally hit the big time, years of work and finally hitting the wave. Her boyfriend, who I think was the drummer, got diagnosed with an autoimmune disease.
She stopped everything and personally cared for him. She chose humanity over the money and that is why I have the greatest respect for her not just as an artist but as a human.
I love Debbie Harry ❤️
chris v guitarist
Blonde was a combinations of sounds from the time with rock ,disco and newave . They were early adapters of rap . They originally were a punk band . So they were very flexible with their music and why they are timeless . A new release identifies to this
Debbie's Stephen Sprouse-designed gown here is fantastic, so ahead of its time.
You never hear people talk about Blondie being one of the best bands of the 70s/80s.. But the best bands of the 70s/80s will talk about Blondie being one of the best bands
I was into Blondie when they were still considered "underground" I never got to see them live, but one night, around the time this song was out, Debbie and Chris were checking out rehearsal spaces and the owner of Quack Studios was showing them around and opened the door to one of the rehearsal rooms and there they were standing in the doorway while my band was playing. I'll never forget the sight of Debbie with no make-up wearing jeans and an over-size sweater, tapping her toe and bopping her head in time to what we were playing.
Good God I Love That Woman!
Cheers!
to see such joy in Blondie is just amazing. SUBBED! such a tremendous song and she is absolutely amazing. talented and beautiful lady right there
Many dance clubs saved this until the last dance of the night as their "closer" and at 4am I was right in the middle of it. Doesn't get any better.
1 second after she starts singing you look like you had an epiphany, and immediately understood why this song was number 1 on so many charts.
This is one of those song that as soon as the band hear the recording everyone in the room knew this was going to number 1.
I was only 19 when this came out and I was head over heels for her
I'm pleased I lived through that time. Blondie were a great band. We had the best music ever in that time. Funny how it's all being brought back again. Shows how good it was🙂
So glad you enjoyed this, this song was a massive hit on top 40 radio as well as in the dance clubs. Always packed the floor!
Interesting that this song came out a few years before MTV. Thus very few people had seen this video when the song was released. Had MTV existed then, it would’ve been an even bigger hit.
Yep, never saw the video, but the song was all around on the radio!
It is videos from songs like this one and songs from Meatloaf and Queen and others that caused Mtv to become a thing in the first place
I certainly remember seeing the video at the time courtesy of 'Top Of The Pops'--our weekly chart show here in Britain. If MTV had been around it would, of course, have had much more exposure. MTV didn't make it to a mass audience in the UK until the launch of satellite broadcasting around the late-80s.
This video was definitely still played on MTV though.
Saw it loads of times on top of the pops and such shows in the UK. MTV has never meant much here and we have never relied on it to introduce us to music. That's probably one of the reasons why nirvana already had a big following in Britain long before the USA was introduced to them with SLTS.
HOLA
OMG! This video never gets old. What a voice. What confidence as she looks right into the camera & right through you. I'm not ashamed to admit, I loved Blondie's songs & had a crush on her..but who didn't have a crush?
I've always enjoyed Blondie. Doesn't matter what style they played, THAT voice made sure it came through. Then of course when videos appeared - well, you've seen her. The rest of the band were no slouches either. I like many kinds of music but Jazz is my jam. So you can imagine how delighted I was when, during her solo period, she became the vocalist for a jazz band called The Jazz Passengers for one album in 1997 called Individually Twisted. I probably would have bought the album for the title alone. She fitted right in and did not disappoint. Elvis Costello, a popular English artist of the time (and since) who, like Blondie, started out punk but forged his own path, wrote and sang a song on the album. Slightly less of a surprise there since he married a well known jazz singer called Diana Krall. The mot du jour for this comment is 'eclectic'.
Hi Russ! I just read your comment and read that you are into jazz! Have you heard of a young lady called Angelina Jordan? She is AMAZING! She is predominantly jazz, however she does just about all genres! She is only 17! She will have an album out later this year! Her videos are ALL over RUclips! You should check her out! Peace and Blessings from Australia.
Blondie is an American rock & new wave band co-founded by singer Debbie Harry & guitarist Chris Stein. They had a lot of great hits in the 70's-90's such as "Call Me", "Atomic", "The Tide Is High", “Rapture”, "Picture This", "Hanging On The Telephone", "I'm Gonna Love You Too", "One Way Or Another", "Sunday Girl", "Island Of Lost Souls", "War Child", "Maria" etc.
Should probably credit Wikipedia if you're just going to copy and paste. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Spot on, as usual, Dagmar! I would only add that she is an icon of fashion as well as music. Debbie showed us girls that we could rock & be punk if we wanted. It is rumored that she was required to wear a black dress for a performance & she didn't have one. She slipped into a maintenance closet & took a black garbage bag & scissors to cut a hole for her head & arms to make a dress. She wore her "black dress" on stage.
Saw them live during their No Exit tour at the Tower Theater in Philadelphia. Amazing live performers, had the best time, love Blondie! ❤️
Starting at 4:20 Watch a dude fall in love in 45 seconds❤🕺🎶💃🥰😍
Blondie is amazzzzzzing!
Dreaming is my favorite blondie song. They were hugely influential and had a fairly novel mix of different musical styles and genres
as a young boy i would watch her on Solid Gold and just be totally enthralled. it did not understand what i was feeling, but oh was i feeling it.
Check out Rapture, Call Me, The Tide is High, One Way or Another.
You might want to check out Abba too. Start with Dancing Queen. I'm a 54 year old man, but when Dancing Queen comes on I want to put on rollerskates and go to the rink!
She is a legend!! I love all her songs
Still sounds amazing just like when i first heard the single being played back in 1979.
I’m loving your reaction on this one! I get happy when others are happy too!! Everyone has already suggested most of their great songs. I really love “The Tide Is High” but any of of their songs are great 😊🎶♥️
When Blondie went Disco some fans weren't happy but you have to admit the genre lent itself to great dance music. I wasn't a big fan of Disco but loved to dance and frequently went to our local disco bar and danced the night away. This was a favorite for many of us dancing nuts
This should have been the song of the year when it came out. It still gives me the same feeling I had when I was a kid. And boy was she beautiful.
I was a teenage boy when this came out and you can guess how much I love I was 😂
late 70s...remember this playing in the clubs ALL the time!
I'm dominicaN teen of the 80s Blondie was my teen era awesome .in middle of British invasion she shined bright all her songs awesome 😎💯
Big UK Blondie fan here and I must have watched a hundred or more reactions to this song, but this is the first one that has not over dubbed the 'pain in the ass' lyrics. sweet.
It didn't hurt that Debbie Harry was a goddess.
Britain embraced Blondie. She fitted in well with our rich and varied music scene of the time.
I was 6 when this came out and my mom who was into bands like Zeppelin , Sabbath and the Eagles was infatuated with Blondie. She was also a big fan of the Knack whose debut album came out in 79 also. Times were changing and so was the music. Pat Benatar was another female artist along with Heart. These were the soundtrack of my early years and I used to play all of her 8 tracks after school. Blondie was my first crush. My mom's name was Debra also. Glad I found your channel and check out the Knack. Get the Knack was their debut album and it is amazing. Thank you 👍🏻
Rapture has been called the FIRST RAP song. Your reaction to the music/video was great to see. I remember playing this and other Blondie on the college radio station I would fill-in over the Summer sessions.
More accurately, it was the first mainstream rap song. Rap was already a thing in the urban subculture, but Blondie was the first band to incorporate it into a mainstream song. I'll forgive her for that.
Almost 5 min intro... lol
Worth it. This is a classic! She's the bomb 💣 😍
This is disco at its very best!
Debbie Harry was a dynamo! And she was able to procure one of the best drummers of the era, Clem Burke.
I was front row at a Blondie gig in 1979.... every young man's dream at the time!
Debbie Harry was much more than a pretty face with an alluring voice. She was a true pioneer in the music scene of the 70's and 80's. Check out Rapture. She pulled a fast on the sensors who wouldn't allow certain types of music to be played.
All the boys in my class including myself were in love with her. Their album Parallel Lines was amazing too.
Love Blondie and The B-52s...both totally awesome!!
New rabbit hole. Many great songs, and they are all different styles. Keep checking them out
All right! You listened to the video with the "pain in the ass" lyric at the end!
There are other videos out there I hate where they change those last lyrics to "heart of glass".....you can read her lips saying "pain in the ass" but the words were changed....hate that....
Good job!
There were two reasons behind the band's name. 1) Debbie Harry and 2) their LPs would be filed behind the Beatles in music store record bins, which is how it was in my family's store. Blondie forever!
I was 11 in 1979, and was given this single at a friends birthday party. I talked my mum in to letting me buy the album a week or so later. It was the first record I ever bought. And still right up there as one of my all time favourites! So much fun watching people discover it now all these years later. And really nostalgic to hear it again too! Do more!!
She was easy to fall in love with in this video, stunning beauty... and oh yeah, the song's catchy.
I remember hearing that song in my mom's car, l remember exactly....l was mesmerized. I never heard such a sweet voice. I was hooked!
wow - watching you listening to it for the first time was like watching me listening to this masterpiece for the first time
Great reaction. Maybe try “Hanging on the telephone”.
Great reaction! Classic song from Blondie.
She Was an actual Play Boy Bunny.
I miss the 70s 80s! Such a fun time to be alive.
Love your reaction to this one love you Blondie rabbit hole!!!
Thank you for Checking out the name First and Realising That Blondie is the Group! I'm fed up with Reactions that go oh Blondie she's so cool!!! Aghhhhhhh Long Live Debbie Harry! looking forward to there Glastonbury Set! Blondie reformed in 1998 and are Still around today Check Out Long Time a Great song from 2017! and there New Album will be out this Year!! 2023
I was waiting for that lyric, "soon turned out, to be a pain in the ass"!
1979 Shelton CT! Ha! Blondie, Joan Jett, Stevie Nicks and Pat Benatar.... Those are Queens! The goddesses of Rock and Roll!
Yeah... I get it, FIRE! Music was so much better before they started running everything into the 440 range during the 90s. Now everything sounds the same with a sprinkle of pop. The 70s and 80s were a unique sound.
Blondie was an incredibly important band as they were true innovators. Not afraid to push boundaries. they pioneered in the new wave, punk genres as well as early rap.
Debbie was my first crush...when I was like 6. She's just utterly breathtaking.
Ellos han estado en chile.
Y nos encantan.
Gracias amigo
No one can even come close to her vocals...almost like 2 people singing at once
Also listen to Blondie 'Call me' from movie American Gigalo
You might well enjoy "Life During Wartime" from the Stop Making Sense concert film from Talking Heads.
Disco peaked in the LATE 70s. Although Blondie is classified as a New Wave band, this song is primarily disco.
Do the next song from them : "Call me"
Blondie was one of the best bands.❤
So happy this was the original version with "soon found out was a pain the ass" lyric which got edit out for radio airplay.
Blondie had it all...in bucket loads. Obviously stunning appearance, the voice, the movement, the look, musical interpretation of the song as well as a bucket load of charisma..wow!! a complete full deck. As other comments have noted she was 33 years old!! when Heart of Glass came out in 1979. Blondie was a superb entertainer. one of the very best acts around. Magnetic and utterly compelling, she is still making music today. She still looks incredibly young today.
Blondie is the name of the band, not the singer.
Blondie exploded onto the scene in 1979 as a new wave band. I was a senior in high school and they were a big deal!
I have the albums Plastic Letters, Parallel Lines, and Eat to the Beat, and there's not a bad song on them.
As far as videos go, Dreaming and Hanging on the Telephone would probably be my favourites... maybe.
The musicians were: Debbie Harry - vocal; Chris Stein, Frank Infante - guitar; Nigel Harrison - bass; Jimmy Destri - keyboard and Clem Burke - drums.
Disco was huge in the late '70s. That cool tempo at the beginning was kind of new, electronic. It was new sounding.
♥ this song! "like infectious' - amen! Yes - the uncensored version! Too many reactors play the radio edited version
You should definitely check out their song - Call Me!
Hanging On the Telephone, One Way or Another, Dreaming, Rapture.
I had the same reaction when I first heard Ms. Harry and the boys on FM radio in 1978. Welcome to the party!
This was VERY disco. Everyone got out on the dance floor when this came out,
My favorite is the Tide is High, reggae influence. You are cracking me up, almost delirious. Gotta love Blondie
The most iconic song ever! ❤️
She had a great voice - they disbanded when Chris Stein got a near deadly disease in the early '80s, and she was his caretaker. They made a comeback in 1999 with MARIA. Also, try DREAMING, SHAYLA, SUNDAY GIRL, and some older stuff like KIDNAPPER, X OFFENDER, ATOMIC, UNION CITY BLUE - and don't miss her cover of RING OF FIRE from the movie "Roadie"(1980).
Another one that filled the dance floor back in the day - you'd like Call Me
Seeing your reaction as soon as Debbie started her vocals was awesome! 🎉
Very beautiful reaction. Thx. 👍👍
One of those songs that will stand the test of time. This will still be loved in 200 years time.
so truee
By the way, I also was crazy over the New Wave era and had tons of albums as we called them then. I still love that sound it's one of my favorites. I was also a young little hippie in the late sixties so I also do love the psychedelic era. But if you want to sample the New Wave era, I would suggest that one of your first listens would be The Plimsouls " A Million Miles Away." To me it perfectly defines the New-Wave era, and it also just happens to be a great song. So much fun and I miss being young.
You can’t believe the crush 13 year old me had on Debby Harry in the late 70’s and early 80’s! But the music was so damn good too! In addition to their many hit singles they had a plethora of great album cuts, like “Slow Motion”, “Accidents Never Happen”, “Sunday Girl”, “Shayla”, “Angels On The Balcony”, etc. I can’t list them all!
