I was introduced to ABBA while being stationed in Berlin in the mid 70s and just fell in love with them. They were huge in Europe at that time and when I got back to the USA, some of my friends thought I was a little strange for liking them. Nearly 50 years later and I still love them. Chiquitita and Fernando are two of my favorites. I still tear up a little listening to those songs. An odd fact...the band learned the lyrics phonically. They were't fluent in English yet.

I have loved ABBA my whole life. My mother used to play there albums all the time!! My favorite songs are "Take a chance on me" and "Dancing Queen" the song " Knowing me Knowing You" is another really good song!!!
ABBA always had a knack of making essentially sad songs sound so god-damn happy! SOS is basically a plea to whomever the song is being sung to. That what they had together is worth saving. The second song, Chiquitita, obviously struck an emotional chord with you and no doubt some of the lyrics resonated with you, personally. Listening to such songs and have a release of emotion is very therapeutic. The song itself is full of hope, especially in the chorus.
As a Swede, I can say that the spirit of it isn't a sad song, but a song of empathy, recognizing the reality of the story of a sad little child, and inspiring hope. As mentioned earlier in this thread it was made for UN's Unicef, and half of all revenues from the song were up until 2014 donated to Unicef, by then 20 million SEK. After 2014, ABBA decided that all future revenue from the song were to be donated to Unicef.
SOS was the first indication that there was a problem in the band, The marriage between two of the members was slowly falling apart and a year later in 1979 they broke up, but the band stayed together a little bit longer to finish the deadline for the UNICEF Year of the Child concert in which Chiqutita (little Girl) would be ABBA contribute and then in 1982 the final straw broke the back of ABBA, and they all went their different ways
@@ianstrange5674 SOS was first release on the B side to A side Chiquitita, there is a lot of mix up information on Abba online, You might be right on the year and I might be wrong, I was at sea in 1975, and I do remember this song hitting the charts it made number 1 on BBC top twenty, but only number 3 as a bestseller at the time
I was never a big ABBA fan back in the days...Today they make me emotional and nostalgic. I even whent to London to se the ABBA Voyage witch was amazing. Sorry for your loss. ❤
I'm glad you got to hear these two songs. They are both very popular. Chiquitita has always been my favorite of ABBA's songs. Now SOS is one of their earlier songs and most of their songs are kind of sad like that and will always get uplifted too. It's just life in general and that's why these songs have so much meaning. Also you don't have to apologize for such emotional reactions, let them out, it helps.
What a blessing for you. I think maybe your lovely grandma in heaven is showing u it is OK to be sad. Because you'll be amazed by how much love & joy there is to come. I acutely miss my father and most recently my mother. We loved to sing in the kitchen, making our food, 2gether. Music is a blessing. So r u .❤❤
When I saw and heard Chiquitita at their VOYAGE concert last year in London I started bawling. I cried four times that night but this song made me the most emotional. Great reaction.
Im sorry for your loss. I feel it with you. Abba is just unmatched. Their chords and melodies…..I cant even describe. “Abba” is a Biblical name, which loosely translates to “Daddy”, referring to God the Father. You dont have to be sad to listen to this. You’ll cry anyway. These women sound like angels singing. Whoever wrote their music must have been divinely inspired.
"S.O.S." is my favourite ABBA song of all times, 'The Masterpiece' for excellence between more ABBA masterpieces "S.O.S." (1975) has a story It was one of Their first recordings after the greatest success of "Waterloo" in Eurovisión, just four months later, in August 1974 But it waited almost a year for its release, in June 1975 at Sweden, September 1975 at UK and US (the next singles after Waterloo was, in these order: Ring Ring (re-entry), So long (at 1974), and "I do I do I do I do I do", and finally "S.O.S." when " "S.O.S." have your chance to be a single, it picks at #6 in U.K. and #15 in U.S. being Their second hit in both countries at the same time, and six #1 (including Germany Australia) and more Top 10 in several countries of all continents and after these, ABBA had 18 Top 10 consecutives in UK between 1975/1982, for example: Mamma Mía, Fernando, Dancing Queen, Take a chance con me, Chiquitita, The winner takes it all, Super trouper etc "S.O.S." in less than 200 seconds is a gem, a Masterpiece! The transitions from the dramatic opening (a dingy piano and a cracking voice of the blonde singerAgnetha) to a powerful rock beat with catchy pop chorus in the middle are brilliant ABBA marked an era in many ways One was the musical leadership of its beautiful and lofty female vocalists as the center of attention Another was the use of contrasts, such as sad lyrics with catchy melodies and harmonies And their recording tecnique "wall of sound" gives ABBA more powerfull ABBA, as in its time BEATLES, left an unforgettable mark on several generations It is good music that lasts and stays alive and well
My dearest mummy gave me a 3m by 1.5m poster of ABBA to put on my wall….I was 7 years old……no idea how much of a beautiful n amazing influence n impact to my life…..
I'm very sorry for your loss. My grandmother passed away in 2002 from colon cancer at age 94, but I think we lost her years before that due to dementia.. I love how Chiquitita goes from sad in the verses to almost triumphant in the chorus and I love that piano in the song.
Lovely to see that ABBA can still reach people's hearts with their unique music. The two girls give it all in their vocals with an incredible range and emotion, yet keeping a total grip on their performance.
I am now a grown man, and crying to "CHIQUITITA". Magical

Just a guitar, a piano and 2 vocals made music of heaven. Tha ABBA SAGA lives on forever ❤❤❤❤
I appreciate this info💗🙏
S.O.S was recorded in 1975.😕
@@ianstrange5674 SOS was first release on the B side to A side Chiquitita, there is a lot of mix up information on Abba online, You might be right on the year and I might be wrong, I was at sea in 1975, and I do remember this song hitting the charts it made number 1 on BBC top twenty, but only number 3 as a bestseller at the time
I was never a big ABBA fan back in the days...Today they make me emotional and nostalgic.
I can only agree with you Morenikeji, this song can even make an old man cry. Keep it up, girl.
They really take you on an emotional ride with this song. It slays me every time too.
This was one of my mother's favorite bands when she was a teenager. I wish I could just give you a big hug. You're so beautiful and amazing.❤❤❤
Chiquitita by Abba remains one of my favorite songs ... your reaction to it was genuine and heartfelt God bless
"S.O.S." is my favourite ABBA song of all times,
'The Masterpiece' for excellence between more ABBA masterpieces
"S.O.S." (1975) has a story
It was one of Their first recordings after the greatest success of "Waterloo" in Eurovisión, just four months later, in August 1974
But it waited almost a year for its release, in June 1975 at Sweden, September 1975 at UK and US
(the next singles after Waterloo was, in these order:
Ring Ring (re-entry), So long (at 1974), and "I do I do I do I do I do",
and finally "S.O.S."
when " "S.O.S." have your chance to be a single, it picks at #6 in U.K. and #15 in U.S. being Their second hit in both countries at the same time, and six #1 (including Germany Australia) and more Top 10 in several countries of all continents
and after these, ABBA had 18 Top 10 consecutives in UK between 1975/1982, for example:
Mamma Mía, Fernando, Dancing Queen, Take a chance con me, Chiquitita, The winner takes it all, Super trouper etc
"S.O.S." in less than 200 seconds is a gem, a Masterpiece!
The transitions from the dramatic opening (a dingy piano and a cracking voice of the blonde singerAgnetha) to a powerful rock beat with catchy pop chorus in the middle are brilliant
ABBA marked an era in many ways One was the musical leadership of its beautiful and lofty female vocalists as the center of attention
Another was the use of contrasts, such as sad lyrics with catchy melodies and harmonies
And their recording tecnique "wall of sound" gives ABBA more powerfull
ABBA, as in its time BEATLES, left an unforgettable mark on several generations
It is good music that lasts and stays alive and well
I appreciate the info😊
My dearest mummy gave me a 3m by 1.5m poster of ABBA to put on my wall….I was 7 years old……no idea how much of a beautiful n amazing influence n impact to my life…..
Agnetha and Anna both had extreme vocal ranges, totally incredible singers.
i had the same tear breakout. the first since years. memorable feelings came up... amazing
I'm very sorry for your loss. My grandmother passed away in 2002 from colon cancer at age 94, but I think we lost her years before that due to dementia..
I love how Chiquitita goes from sad in the verses to almost triumphant in the chorus and I love that piano in the song.
I’m so sorry.🥹
I love that about the song too. The switch between the verses and the chorus.💕
@@MorenikejiTaiwo Thank you. Dementia is a very cruel disease. In a way, I believe it's blessing that the cancer took her before the dementia did.
Love, älskar ABBA för alltid, så stolt att vara svensk och från Jönköping, Agnetas hemstad ❤ är 62 år, har funnits med mig från början
Lovely to see that ABBA can still reach people's hearts with their unique music. The two girls give it all in their vocals with an incredible range and emotion, yet keeping a total grip on their performance.
Your grandma must’ve been a very special lady. You’ll cherish her memories forever.
Very very special 😔❤
The music of ABBA like that of the beatles transcends all nationalities and speaks to something deep within human nature
Our belived Abba here in Sweden now 40 year later its still endless !!!!!!!
The best band ever this sound will never die after 1000 years somebody will listen this beautiful band
Wonder times, wonderful music that I miss so much ❤
