He certainly did. Without him Titanic could never have been made.
Over the years I have come to appreciate this film as one of almost unsurpassed excellence. I'm currently watching the 3-disc Special Collector's Edition DVD (region 1 (NTSC)). It's a wonder this film could have ever been made with all of the complexities involved. I'm amazed watching all of the documentaries. This film has grown in my esteem and is almost flawless.
In short, it's a great film and Cameron certainly was the best director that year.
To buy the 3-disc DVD edition go here to Amazon... www.amazon.com/Titanic-Three-Disc-Collectors-Leonardo-DiCaprio/dp/B000ANVQ0K/ref=tmm_dvd_title_13?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1489365773&sr=8-1
I bought it used for about $8US, a real bargain.

I was an extra in "Titanic" and working with Cameron was amazing. Oscar night that year was one of the most exciting nights of my life. He really deserved his Oscar. I'm teary eyed tonight at the news of James Horner death in a plane crash. He composed the most beautiful score ever and it is imbedded in my very soul and the souls of many other's I'm sure. Bless James Horner and his family at this time. One of the all time great film composers.

No one can deny that Cameron deserved this more than anyone else in that room for creating one of cinema's greatest accomplishments, which includes essentially painstakingly rebuilding the entire Titanic with rooms and all, having it be destroyed in real time at the end, as well as many other great feats regarding one of the most huge, epic films ever. Bloated, overstuffed, overlong? Sure, but it's a spectacle for the ages.

Many films typically have a great 1st week at the box office and then slowly die off. Titanic however had it's biggest earnings in week 2 and week 3 at the box office.
From week 4 to week 10 it's weekly earnings only declined 13 million. In comparison the 3rd highest grossing film of all time Marvel Avengers had a decline of 50 million during that same period. The longer Titanic was in theatres it's popularity spread and eventually it gained the highest weekly earnings from weeks 3 to 15 at the box office. Avatar now has the record from weeks 3 to 7 but Titanic still holds it from weeks 8 to 15. I believe the longer a film is able to put bums on seats is a sign of a truly quality film. I was thankful to have seen this film twice at the theatres as a kid however my favourite Jim Cameron film is still T2. James Cameron you are most certainly king of the world!

I love how people who disliked Titanic and Avatar use them as a way to deride his career, when he's been making movies for almost 30 years. Did people forget this guy directed Terminator 1, T2, Aliens, The Abyss, and True Lies? The first four are without a shred of doubt some of the greatest sci-fi movies ever made - even more startling when you consider two of them were sequels - and True Lies is the pinnacle of the action/comedy flicks. No one is more deserving of this award then Cameron.

I'd also like to say that directing a movie like this is an astounding feat. Not many can take on a film of this magnitude and come out the other side with a Best Picture and Director Oscar. And anyone who didn't feel like king of the world after a night like this (a record-tying 11 Oscars) just isn't human. There's nothing arrogant about what he said, it was merely a very apt reference to the film that got him there.
