  • Johnny performs this in the 'love song' slot of his TV show, August 30, 1969, decades before Rick Rubin resurrected it for his "comeback" record on Rubin's American Records label.

The impressive Johnny Cash, he is an icon among incons. and this song is one of his masterpieces. he is probably the most outstanding person in music. no matter what genre he crossed all boundaries. I can't imagine a time when he will be forgotten. if that ever does happen it will be the saddest day ever in the world of music. and music in general will take a giant hit should that ever happen. I hope that his memory will stay with us throughout time. I have to say I'm pretty sure it will no doubt.

The song is an old blues number, based on a real story. On Dec. 24, 1900, Moses Houston shot Delia Green in Savannah, GA. He served 13 years in prison.
Authorship for the ballad has been claimed by many, but it was first recorded by Blind Willie McTell in the 1920s, later by Blake Higgs, in the early 1960s by Johnny Cash, then by Bob Dylan.
Each version of the song has different lyrics, and Cash probably never performed it the same way twice.

Except the song is much older than the Delia Green murder.
'Delia's Gone' is a reworking of 'Another Rounder Gone' which pre-dates Delia's Gone by several years. 'Another Rounder Gone' is a regional variation of 'Frankie and Johnny', which was a reworking of 'Frankie and Charlie,' which dates back to the 1830s out of Burke County, NC and is based around the murder of Charlie Silver by his wife Frankie. (The 'Frankie' songs probably originate even further back to some Scots and Irish murder ballads of the 1600s.)
So what we have essentially is one basic song, with a narrative that can be made to fit whatever murder of the day that made an impression on the public of that time. For instance, compare the 1677 lyrics of Scottish murder ballad 'Percy Reed':
      "Anest time I cot'r
      I cot'r w'mae blide
'Was on' ta watch her suffer
'Ere with the secon cot she died"
(In modern English: "First time I cut her, I cut her with my blade/ I wanted to watch her suffer, but with the second cut she died.")
      Delia's Gone (Johnny Cash version):
      "First time I shot her
      Shot her in the side
      Hard to watch her suffer
But with the second shot she died"

As a kid I had this on a Johnny Cash album in the early 1970s and always thought it was such a haunting song. The other song I found unforgettable on the album was Suppertime, a religious song about a guy looking back on childhood. Who else could take those two extremes and give such authentic performances to each. In Dehlia, it was only years later that I realized how clever the line "one more round" was - is he talking about another verse or more bullets?

Parker Allen a round is also another word for bullet Parker Allen.

I think originally it pertained to alcohol, as the song pre-dates the creation of the modern cartridge. Back in the cap and ball days, you just called it a bullet. 'Round' came about quite a bit later in the parlance and was used to describe the entire cartridge (case, primer, powder, wad and bullet) as referring to a cartridge as a 'bullet' is ignorant. (It's a bit like calling your car a 'steering wheel'.)
