Paulie Copez I was thinking while watching this magnificent show about Johnny going to San Quinton where Merle was incarcerated and doing a show for them. I know in Merles wildest dreams at the time he could not imagine being on stage with Johnny and both being two of the biggest Icons and legends Country music has ever had .
@Matthew Robertson Cash had Sam Phillips bail him out of a ton of situations that should have landed him in prison, more than once; but his fame and the influence of Sun Records (and it’s money) kept him from it. Luckily Cash didn’t start really raising Cain until he’d found fame or he might’ve met Merle in San Quentin another way…. For instance, he was caught at the border, and once on a plane with drugs. In those days a small amount of marijuana would’ve landed the average joe a hefty jolt in prison; the hard drugs he was caught with would’ve been worse especially when charged as federal crimes, (which taking drugs across an international border or on a plane would’ve been; then and now). But, due to his fame, wealth, influence of his friends/label, and white skin, he avoided what would’ve normally happened in favor of large fines, community service, and probation. He caught on and straightened up when he became involved romantically with the love of his life, June Carter (who’d become June Carter Cash in time). The movie “Walk the Line” shows a bit of this; albeit with some details omitted or simplified, for the sake of drama or it being counter to the story they wanted to tell. You probably knew all that anyway, I bet.
Merle Haggard: the greatest country musician to ever live. Although, when foreign people think about famous American musicians Johnny Cash represents America. Just need George Jones and Marty Robbins up there..heck even Faron Young. The greatest voices to ever be on a stage..

This really is something. Merle Haggard, Bonnie Owens, Johnny Cash, June Carter, The Carter Family, The Statler Brothers before Jimmy Fortune and Carl Perkins. Stirs up so many memories. Thanks for sharing.
Merle was a looker for sure and one of my favorite voices in country...love Johnny too! Man, the heavens sure has some very bright stars shining from above!
Amen to that. And, watching the Highwaymen recently and thinking that Willie and Kris will be gone soon too and how much real pleasure these men have given me. Very grateful.❤
Amen and it maybe hard for others to believe but if they were children of God in the end if they have there hearts to God and ask there sins be forgiven they then one day again the will have brand new body's be so young looking and never age ever ever ever again it's a promise God has made us one passage in the Bible says that in my father's house are many mansions if it were not so I would not have told you so so I go to prepare a place for you that to me makes me jump for joy and another one says we shall run and not be weary we shall never get sick we will never grow old we won't feel no pain and suffering anymore in these perfect bodies that we will have heaven will be right here on Earth if you don't know it that is the New Jerusalem is coming down and it will be right here the Earth replenished by God only to kick all the bad out and the evil and now it would be a perfect world now amen and amen
He was only 33 years old in 1970. He was certainly out to prove that he could be the best and he was the best. He really work hard with his music, voice and his band. Bonnie Owens and Merele were so good together 1965-1978.
I knew he was born in 37 and the 1970 show was a huge night for him but never did the math. To do the things he was awarded for just a short 10 or so years from his rowdy life is a miracle and a testament.
Hard to believe that Cash was singing to Merle when Merle was in San Quentin. It’s just another great example that America is the greatest place for opportunity. Prisoner to Country superstar, God bless these two.
Ok so I'm 17. I am souly addicted to the greats of country music. I would kill to have met merle and Johnny. There are no two men that have influenced the person I am today than them
That's beautiful :) Jesus was a huge influence on both of them, through their family and others who knew the Lord. Read your Bible, take the narrow road, through Jesus Christ, and one day you *will* meet them!
This here video is a testament to days of future passed....a time we will never see again. This is how it is done...Live at the Ryman, Half of Cash's band, half of Haggards..... Roy, Norm, Biff, Bobby, Fluke, Marshall and Carl Perkins, The Statler boys, of which we just recently lost Harold Reid. Bonnie Owens, June, and all the rest. Makes me sad we will never see days like these ever again in Country Music.
His music changed with age just when you thought he couldnt get any better he did. Living Legend in his time now hes an even a more Legend now hes no longer with us. Im Kentucky born and raised and thankful i was raised on Merle Haggard and more than a few of his songs in my playlist and im only 45. What makes even better is my oldest son 24 has him and alot of the greats in his playlist Haggard, Coe, Cash,Jennings and more. Proud papa just for that country is not what it used to be. But in lives on because of people like us.
It just doesn't get any better than that. And to think they have all left us now with only memories of the music that will remain in our hearts forever. God bless real country music.
DAMN!!!!!! How much amazing country talent can you fit on one stage? Haggard, Cash, June, Perkins.....etc, amazing video! Can't believe this is the first time I've come across this!!

Never forget Merle saw Johnny play in prison and it made him want to be a performer. Now they are both famous on stage. So awesome.
