I saw this when it aired. I was gasping along with the audience. In 2 minutes the world changed ... forever This was no mere singer but the weaver of our darkest dreams. Bless you JC!
.. i remember that show, after Mr Cash performance, Lettermen told the audiance : hey, it was nice of Johnny to have sung a liitle something from his christmas album ! lol :D
These are two men who mattered a lot to me in younger years, but it is interesting how things change: Johnny Cash endures as a memorable, arguably even great, American figure, while Letterman's stock bottomed out many years ago, never to rise again.
... coming back from the commercials, i remember Lettermen telling Paul Shaefer : hey Paul, i think it was very nice of Johnny' s to offer us a little something from his christmas album ! lol :D
Such a sad song but I grew up listening to Harry Belafonte's poignant take- Johnny does it sublimely, not as sorrowful...can't explain. A song I always ask for at folk clubs and festivals- who wrote it? I always think of a dark, long, long ago night, a down and out, gin shack, handsome Robert Johnson, like Jimi Hendrix, the legend lives on! Johnson was shot by a scorned lover and this song is SO EVOCATIVE. Now my mom is at Johnny's Roadhouse, drinking a Pink Lady, in her best dress- she passed away over Christmas 2021- Delia's Gone...Namaste
Gangsta rap? What does it have anything to do with this performance? I wonder what made you make that very very odd comparison. Gangsta rap hasn't even really been around since the mid-90s.
I mean the man could go on the Muppets and entertain 7 year old kids (like me at the time :) in 1980 he was the only artist that me, my conservative grandmother, and my liberal grandmother all loved.
It's all about feeling the music, not a choreographed chord pattern, just sing and play as you feel it......... doesn't have to be perfect, as long as YOU MEAN IT, WHEN YOU SING IT!!! Good luck my friend!
Never knew he was ever on Lettermans show. The two somehow look odd standing side by side.... Cash was just so WONDERFUL....don't really care for Letterman tho. He's kinda got a ' holier than thou' attitude..Just my opinion
Randyhall85 yea same thought I had. The first time I heard this song I laughed pretty much at the end of every verse. It's a very tongue in cheek tune.
I remember seeing this live. After the commercial Dave said "we'd like to thank Johnny for coming by and singing that Christmas song for us."
Blessed to have seen this from the audience, balcony. Wish they threw in a quick audience shot!

+andy massingham What do you mean, in 2 minutes the world changed? Did I miss something?
After seeing this, I immediately went out and bought my first Johnny Cash album.
Never been a country music fan. I feel this just pure, simple genius. Love Johnny Cash.
Legendary. Simply legendary.
Delia Green was shot by Moses Houston Christmas day 1900, Savannah GA. She gone.
The Man in Black was one Cool Dude until the day he died…. And He’s Still Cool, all these years later !
.. i remember that show, after Mr Cash performance, Lettermen told the audiance : hey, it was nice of Johnny to have sung a liitle something from his christmas album ! lol :D
I love how this wasn't cut as it likely would be today. Yesterday was such a better time. Johnny Cash was such an amazing talent.
What are you talking about? They'd cut this three minute performance today? No they wouldn't. I wonder where you got this very strange idea.
These are two men who mattered a lot to me in younger years, but it is interesting how things change: Johnny Cash endures as a memorable, arguably even great, American figure, while Letterman's stock bottomed out many years ago, never to rise again.
He’s a legend,
Don’t just call him memorable.
In my eyes it’s disrespectful

Lyrics only a badass could write, and only a class act could sing. Badder than any gangsta rap, but as touching as a hymnal

Rap is for weak cowardly criminals.
@@adamlane6453When do you think this came out, genius?
I mean the man could go on the Muppets and entertain 7 year old kids (like me at the time :) in 1980 he was the only artist that me, my conservative grandmother, and my liberal grandmother all loved.
awesome . simply awesome.
THE BEST JOHNNY CASH
... country music maestro !
...meaning it changed how I had ever felt about JC, popular music, the 'message' of a singer and song.
Love delia's gone
This is like Joker goin on tha Murray show.but with a sad ending.
you could hear people gasping around 1:42. Hahah, they couldn't handle him!
Yeah and a slight smirk play across Johnny's face. That's when he knew he had them!
"always good to have you here" "meh" "we'll do another commercial, keanunu reeves is here"
Wyclef Jean brought me here. 🙌🙌👑
Johnny had fucking cache. Imagine Letterman people saying, what are you playing? Johnny: that's my business. Yes sir Mr cash!. A true giant.
Love it
The last album ever recorded in his life was American 6 Ain't No Grave, but it was released in 2010.
Nice but would be nicer if Luther and Marshall were playing behind him.
letterman doesn't seem to know he's in the prescence of greatness.
Poor Delia - simply shot in the side - a great song - thx!
With ALL the billions of fans around the world,, WHAT would Johnny's NET$WORTH IS NOWADAYS?
Hey girl and boy. Momma is on your thing. But you know Daddy is all over this.
What is this strumming and picking pattern/method he uses here? I'm trying to figure it out but won't seem to nail it. Please, anyone?
He is using the classic Johnny Cash alternating bass note pattern

this is Gansta....
jeez, tough crowd.
Randyhall85 yea same thought I had. The first time I heard this song I laughed pretty much at the end of every verse. It's a very tongue in cheek tune.
Letterman is a pompous, sarcastic fool and was never even worthy to shine the shoes of a man like Johnny Cash.
Nah. Letterman was (and still is) great. Johnny too.
Lets just be glad Jimmy Kimmel wasn't there...
Wish my wifes name was Delia
That's funny
Guess what my girlfriend's name is.

Wyclef Jean nails it this sucks
