Dave has a perfect comeback to any situation as fast as a bullet. When Madonna turn to the guy "who said that?" got an instantly "he is the guy you didn't want to kiss at the begining", that was very fast.
Two things: 1) Madonna's confidence, sense of humor, and quick wit are magnetic. Her personality really brings it, and she oozes sexuality. While she is a bit combative, she's also fun. 💯 2) Her and Letterman have damn good chemistry, and this actually felt like we were watching a first date. But man.. they would make the oddest couple. 😂
I used to record Letterman and watch it with a few high school friends during lunch hour in the art room, and we watched this a few times - it made the morning news, and we were so excited to see this.
It's funny seeing that Letterman put out his cigar/cigarette or whatever before coming back on air and pointing out Madonna's as if you couldn't see vapor coming off of him.
It's like a complete train wreck and a brilliant live comedy show all at once! I was 9 years old when this transpired. Makes me miss my childhood. Every now and again I will come back to this legendary interview, and all I can say is that I am very glad that Madonna conducted herself the way that she did with this late night interview. She kept stiff-ass Letterman on his toes, as well as the rest of the crew that evening, and then some. This caliber of late night tv cannot happen today.
People were mad about this but she gave that show life and reality that night I love her for that. Dave really did a great job rolling with the punches as well
Didn’t see it live, to my own chagrin. I had to wait until RUclips years later to finally watch in its entirety. Even then, it was a renegade video: back when RUclips kept everything under 10 minutes, so you knew it would get scrubbed. Dave was so damned professional and hilariously still Dave the whole time. Magnificent.
14:12 This is quite a brilliant moment. It seemed she broke character when he said that he knows everything there is to know about her. It negates the whole act. And she replies that he doesn't know a go**** thing.
PRIME Madonna! PRIME Dave! God, that was freakin' fantastic. We're talking 28 years ago, and I remember it like last night. this is SO FUNNY! What chemistry they have.,
A classic interview. Should have included Dave’s intro: “Our next guest has slept with the biggest names in the industry,” And Paul’s astonishment “She your guest!”
It’s funny everyone gets mad at her for saying the f word but no one calls out the guy literally trying to convince a woman to kiss a random man. yeah makes total sense🙄
Madonna is super cool!!! Don't think it was rehearsed. She put David on the spot almost every second, funny and uncomfortable at same time and credit to David he managed her well. Dave is awesome. It was a fun show for the audience. Thanks for sharing and Yes, she is wild :) and we love her.
The way the wife in the audience was clapping and scowling at her (non-clapping) husband when Letterman told them to turn down the sound because "people don't want this in their living rooms." 😅
This interview was so controversial at the time. I remember news programs saying that this interview had the most "bleeps" at the time. When Madonna and Dave showed up together at the awards a short time after, it was classic. =)
I remember watching this Live, and had been Lucky enough to have taped it so I then was able to rewatch it again and again- Dave is a Legend, but one of the things Dave could do so well is when a guest goes off kilter, the interview starts to go wrong, you see Dave's face and attitude just go "screw it", he starts jabbing back, and somehow he and the guest end up having a great time- Madonna was one, the Andy Kaufman/Jerry Lawler bits, when Joaquin Phoenix went method actor, and all the Charles Grodin appearances (that was an act, but I never knew for years- Grodin and Dave played off each other so well) - I remember when there was an older Lady who had an "act" with monkeys- they went crazy, and one was a Baboon and Lunged at Dave- Dave was genuinely afraid but still popped Lines and made comedy out of it
Classic and completely iconic till this day. I hope they upload her follow up interview with him in nov 2000. Complete night and day! Dave why haven't you had her on your Netflix show yet?? Long-overdue
I know there are a lot more obvious things going on in this video, but can we take a moment to appreciate how at 17:33 Dave does his Johnny Carson impression, and almost instantly Paul Shaffer starts playing the Tonight Show theme?
omg I have NEVER picked up on that until just now! :o granted, I didn't watch the Carson Tonight Show much, so don't know his mannerisms TOO well.....but gosh I've probably watched THIS here interview 100 times over the last 28 years, and wow, I'm absolutely tickled to just now be noticing this subtle impression for the very first time.....you are CORRECT sir! :o
Seeing this later in life, I'm even more angry with the audience and the double standards. Any time he did something vulgar like felt her up, make crude jokes, grab a top 10 from under her, show a clip of a naked woman riding a bike, everyone cheers and hoots. She does something vulgar and she's disgusting. They set her up to fail and she was resilient and even more rebellious. She's right. He used to be cool and edgy, and here he's pandering to some boring demographic (for 11:30 PM no less). Later she shared that the producers set her up like telling her to say that comment about peeing in the shower. And she was so bothered by this interview, years later she asked if they could bury the hatchet, and David said there was no hatchet. As always she was ahead of her time.
It's not about vulgarity, it's about sense of control and purpose. What Madonna did was perceived out of control and provocative, just for self-spotlight. What Letterman did, instead, was perceived within boundaries and entertaining, for the sake of the audience. There's no double standard. Letterman's references to the old couple meant "That is my audience. I work for them too".
This didn't sound NY to me. It sounded mid-west (which is where she's from), certain words she says made it really evident. But I do remember when she had the English accent lol.

@@davidBarrelif anyone wants to ask, we’ll let u kno
I've never been a fan but she does have attitude. I'll give her that.
This is the best interview ever! Two greats doing their thing 🥳🥳👲🏼🧎🏼♀️
I remember watching this in Australia and howling with laughter so much i got in trouble with my folks haha
this is the most entertaining yet pointless interview! great stuff
Two things:
1) Madonna's confidence, sense of humor, and quick wit are magnetic. Her personality really brings it, and she oozes sexuality. While she is a bit combative, she's also fun. 💯
2) Her and Letterman have damn good chemistry, and this actually felt like we were watching a first date. But man.. they would make the oddest couple. 😂
“What is that- a swim cap?!” 🤣😂🤣
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I used to record Letterman and watch it with a few high school friends during lunch hour in the art room, and we watched this a few times - it made the morning news, and we were so excited to see this.
It's funny seeing that Letterman put out his cigar/cigarette or whatever before coming back on air and pointing out Madonna's as if you couldn't see vapor coming off of him.
It's like a complete train wreck and a brilliant live comedy show all at once! Hilarious and deeply uncomfortable but you don't want it to stop 😆 Dave did a sterling job of holding his own against her, they have a weird and explosive kind of chemistry together. Deep down I think they really do like each other.
I think they hooked up after that

Madonna was so fearless wow. The back and forth between her and the host shows maturity that she can take a joke and she wont just sit , she will also throw the punches
This was anything but fearless...

Only Dave could have handled this interview so well
Paul jumping in with the Tonight Show theme was genius.
You did have something there, David Letterman. One of the highlights of your show. Ever.
People were mad about this but she gave that show life and reality that night I love her for that. Dave really did a great job rolling with the punches as well
Zero subject. She's extremely superficial.
@@bavarois25ohh well
Didn’t see it live, to my own chagrin.
Dave actually handled her pretty well here, there's not much at all to Madonna in this interview apart from sexual innuendo and swear words

There is a magic in this interview which i really don't see anymore. Late Show was a party every night no matter the guest.
"Former mayor of New York.....Dave Dinkins?" 🤣🤣😂😂🔥
Madonna is super cool!!! Don't think it was rehearsed. She put David on the spot almost every second, funny and uncomfortable at same time and credit to David he managed her well. Dave is awesome. It was a fun show for the audience. Thanks for sharing and Yes, she is wild :) and we love her.

Dave put on a masterclass in dealing with a complicated interview.
I missed the masterclass. He seemed lost for big portions of it...
The way the wife in the audience was clapping and scowling at her (non-clapping) husband when Letterman told them to turn down the sound because "people don't want this in their living rooms." 😅
"What is that, a SWIM CAP?!" Dave Letterman was so quick.
He always got the last word in😂

And then HUMAN NATURE was born!! The backlash she received from this interview surely inspired her songwriting
I didn't know that...I love that song!
Actually Human Nature was about the backlash she received during Erotica. This interview came out a few months before Bedtime Stories
Absolutely. No. Regrets.
This interview was so controversial at the time. I remember news programs saying that this interview had the most "bleeps" at the time. When Madonna and Dave showed up together at the awards a short time after, it was classic. =)
This twenty minute interview is funnier than 99% of what talk shows do today.
“Dave you are a sick fuck!”

This what she would’ve looked like if she’d done The Matrix. She was offered the role as Trinity but turned it down!

Wish I could go back in time capsule. Watching this making me feel nostalgic. Loved 90s Madonna
Me too :/
A beautiful dance of the human condition that was once upon a time allowed to be broadcast on public television. Legendary.
I remember watching this Live, and had been Lucky enough to have taped it so I then was able to rewatch it again and again- Dave is a Legend, but one of the things Dave could do so well is when a guest goes off kilter, the interview starts to go wrong, you see Dave's face and attitude just go "screw it", he starts jabbing back, and somehow he and the guest end up having a great time- Madonna was one, the Andy Kaufman/Jerry Lawler bits, when Joaquin Phoenix went method actor, and all the Charles Grodin appearances (that was an act, but I never knew for years- Grodin and Dave played off each other so well) - I remember when there was an older Lady who had an "act" with monkeys- they went crazy, and one was a Baboon and Lunged at Dave- Dave was genuinely afraid but still popped Lines and made comedy out of it
Dave is really awesome!
"You realize that this is being broadcast, don't you?"
- "Yeah, you realize that I'm Madonna, don't you?"
Rumor has it Madonna was high af going into the show.
Combine that with Dave's history of bashing Madonna
Recipe for disaster
Classic and completely iconic till this day.
I hope they upload her follow up interview with him in nov 2000. Complete night and day! Dave why haven't you had her on your Netflix show yet?? Long-overdue
Fair play to Madonna for trying to break the system and fair play to Dave for his professionalism 😂👑 legends
Madonna was out of line, Letterman was man of the moment. Letterman's handling of the interview was a class act.
This conversation was wild af!! lol🤣
I love Modanna. Subverting everything with no apologies. Dave riding through, but it ended with a great laugh.
I watched this interview many time. But now i am watching this. Passive aggressive behaviour is clearly visible.
@@shubhankarsingh5353 I can see she feels vulnerable and attacked. He abused the situation.
“What do you want to know?”
“What’s your next look?”
“That’s what you want to know?”
She is daring him to treat her as an equal and not an object.
This was when Madonna had her New York accent. Six years later, she moved to London and magically picked up an English accent.
This didn't sound NY to me. It sounded mid-west (which is where she's from), certain words she says made it really evident. But I do remember when she had the English accent lol.
She's so full of herself. Yuck!!!!
There's no there there
It was an English accent impression, wouldn't go as far as to say it was an actual accent lol.
The one time when David Letterman was completely upstaged, taken aback, dumbfounded and IMPRISONED!
